Coe alumni create A NATIONAL NETWORK FOR INTERNSHIPS

Ben Perez ’16 PHYSICS DALLAS, TX

Ben interned at Google with Coe alumnus Sandeep Giri ’04. Sandeep is an employee of Google who routinely requests a Coe student as an intern. After completing his internship and graduating from Coe, Ben was the recipient of the Eugene McDermott Graduate Fellowship at the University of Texas at Dallas to pursue a fully funded graduate degree. He also earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.

Curt provides a studio programming

INTERNSHIP EXCLUSIVE TO COE STUDENTS with FOX Sports Media Group in California.

Curt Menefee ’87

AMERICAN STUDIES WITH MINORS IN HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION ATLANTA, GA

Host of Fox NFL Sunday Curt took advantage of the opportunities available in Cedar Rapids and got involved in sports television during his days as a student at Coe. He began his professional career in Cedar Rapids at the local ABC affiliate KCRG TV9 prior to moving on to stations all over the country. He was a play-by-play announcer for NFL games on Fox for 10 seasons while also anchoring sports for the local Fox station in New York City.

Marley Carviou ’22 Marley was the first Kohawk chosen for Curt's studio programming internship with FOX Sports Media Group. In addition to attending topic classes, her four-person production team created a series of 30-second ads encouraging viewers to vote. “The biggest thing I took away from the internship was definitely the connections that I made. Everyone was very relatable, very nice and open to talking to us.”

The medical school acceptance rate for Coe graduates is

TWO TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.

Since 1979, 100% OF PHYSICS MAJORS accepted to graduate school have received a FULL RIDE. Since 1985, 100% OF CHEMISTRY MAJORS accepted to graduate school have received a FULL RIDE.

Alexandria Hansen ’18 NEUROSCIENCE AND BIOLOGY WITH MINORS IN CHEMISTRY AND SPANISH BONDURANT, IA

Alexandria is quick to praise Coe's professors, saying they make class fun and stay in tune with students' stress levels as well as the degree to which everyone is understanding course material. While classes were always engaging, Alexandria said her Health and Science Internship was the perfect complement. "This internship gave me the opportunity to shadow physicians and physician assistants in different locations around Cedar Rapids. I spent a week in dermatology, pediatrics and family medicine. Many courses I took at Coe, such as Integrated Human Anatomy and Integrated Human Physiology, helped me understand terms and processes that I saw in the clinic while shadowing."

Joshua Conte ’23

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING DES PLAINES, IL

Joshua's marketing internship at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll led to a job offer. He works at the law firm part time while he finishes his studies at Coe. Coe's comprehensive career center, C3: Creativity, Careers, Community, connected Joshua to the competitive internship position. Joshua was hand-picked to participate in Coe's Birkey Investment Fund. He is the vice president of Credo, off-campus mainstream chair of the Student Activities Committee and sergeant-of-arms for APO.

Hannah Daley ’20

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, ASIAN STUDIES AND ENGLISH WITH A MINOR IN INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS RED WING, MN

Hannah was awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to Laos. During her studies at Coe, Hannah spent a full term in China and a May Term in Vietnam. She was in Mortar Board, Student Senate, Business Club and the Student Alumni Association.

Crystal Maldonado ’21 NEUROSCIENCE AND BIOLOGY AURORA, IL

As a Coe student, Crystal volunteered at the Catherine McAuley Center, which provides educational services for immigrants and refugees — many of whom speak Swahili. In order to be able to better assist those facing a language barrier, she applied for a Critical Language Scholarship, which is sponsored by the United States Department of State, to study Swahili in Africa even though she already spoke French, Spanish and English. Coe faculty members were critical in encouraging Crystal to pursue the opportunity, which only has an acceptance rate of 10%. “As a daughter of an immigrant, I know how frustrating it can be to attempt to learn English and adapt to American culture. I am hoping with another language under my belt that I am able to be a greater asset in helping individuals communicate within our community.”

Crystal was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship to learn a fourth language — Swahili.

Robert Rajic ’19 CHICAGO, IL

Nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital RECEIVED THE 2018-2019 NURSE CORPS SCHOLARSHIP

This full-tuition scholarship allowed Rajic to pursue a career he loves while giving back to the community — a true passion for him. “Coe’s nursing program is phenomenal. It’s eye-opening and rigorous,” said Rajic who completed clinical sessions at both Mercy and UnityPoint hospitals in Cedar Rapids. “I’m convinced that Coe has the best nursing program in the nation.”

Ally Roeker ’22

ENGLISH, COMMUNICATION STUDIES AND WRITING WOODBURY, MN

Interning at a writing center within a bank might sound odd at first, but it was impactful work! Ally helped bank examiners improve the clarity of complex written reports. “It’s super exciting. It is one of the first workplace writing centers that has been established. It’s really cool to see how things we do at a college writing center are being transferred and changed for the workplace setting."

Col. Matt Clark ’95 PSYCHOLOGY GAITHERSBURG, MD

Program Manager of Operation Warp Speed for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Matt led work on the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain for distribution to hospitals and communities.

Ally interned with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia writing center.

COE’S 11:1

student-to-faculty ratio ALLOWS YOU TO GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS.

Faculty routinely use their connections to help students find internships, jobs and research positions throughout the world. This means you’ll have the opportunity to gain graduate-level experience while pursuing an undergraduate degree. This doesn’t happen at other schools. This is just one example...

Dr. Steven Feller PHYSICS

RENOWNED PROFESSOR AND RECIPIENT OF OVER $10 MILLION IN MAJOR GRANTS.

The 2017 International Conference on Borate Glasses, Crystals and Melts at Oxford University was held in Dr. Feller's honor to recognize his contributions to the field.

Honored as a Centenary Fellow of the Society by the Society of Glass Technology, Dr. Feller is one of only three scientists to receive this recognition in this century.

Dr. Feller's students and colleagues will tell you he’s definitely not all business. He is just as happy to discuss baseball, especially the Yankees, teach students the finer points of stickball and help prepare a Passover Seder dinner for members of the Coe community.

“I chose Coe because it felt like a community. The small campus provides the perfect academic setting to connect with professors as well as classmates. The out-ofclassroom experiences such as internships and volunteering really sold me on Coe. You're only at Coe for four years, but the knowledge and skills you will acquire last a lifetime.”
