THE MYTH
All colleges are the same, so students should choose a school based on cost.
THE REALITY
While it is important to find a college that is financially feasible for your family, it also is important to find one that is the right fit. This oftentimes is referred to as the best value. Your best value college may cost a little more than another lesser fit institution. However, choosing the college with the best fit and value makes your investment worth the money.

Low-interest student loans are considered “self help” and must be repaid. Borrowers typically begin repayment six months following graduation.

Grants & Scholarships
Financial Commitment
Grants and scholarships include all (federal, state and Coe) gift assistance that does not require repayment. In recent years Coe invested over $14.7 million in our incoming class.
After financial aid is applied, the difference in cost is the remaining balance. Payment can be made per term or over the course of 10 months. Some families elect to use a Parent PLUS Loan to cover all or a portion of this out-of-pocket cost.

STEP 4: RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID
Financial aid offers are mailed to admitted students who send their FAFSA results to Coe. Admission and financial aid staff personally review students’ offers with them. Until that time, below is an explanation of terms you may see and hear when discussing your financial aid offer.
Terms to Know
Direct Cost: The cost of education expenses billed by a college (tuition, room and board). Expected Family Contribution (EFC): The EFC is a measure of your family’s financial strength and is calculated according to a formula established by law. Your family’s taxed and untaxed income, assets and benefits (such as unemployment or Social Security) are all considered in the formula. Also considered is family size and the number of family members attending college. Note: Your EFC is not the amount of money your family will have to pay for college nor is it the amount of federal student aid you will receive. It is a number used by the college to calculate the amount of federal student aid you are eligible to receive. Grants: Awards that do not need to be repaid. They are often need-based and vary in dollar amount. Coe Grants Federal Pell Grants Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOGs) Iowa Tuition Grants (ITGs) Loans: Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. Federal Direct Stafford Loans Federal Perkins Loans Parent PLUS Loans Out-of-Pocket Cost: The difference between the direct cost and scholarships, grants, loans and college work-study. Priority Deadline: Coe’s priority deadline to file the FAFSA is March 1, 2022. Once you file, Coe typically receives your FAFSA results within two weeks. Within 10 days after that, we will mail your financial aid award to you. Scholarships: Academically strong students or those with a particular skill or talent may qualify for renewable scholarships that do not need to be paid back. Work-Study: Federal and Coe work-study awards are valued at $1,300 and $1,800 per year (six to eight hours per week) and provide a job on or near campus.
