COEUS FASHIONS Houston Fashion Forecast
When will it ever get cold? Will it stay cold? Houston’s weather is notoriously unpredictable! How will a fashion maven ever keep up with national trends without sacrificing his or her look to the weather? Houstonian trendsetters are chameleons of fashion. They are capable of combining warm weather pieces with cool weather items to create a trendy cozy look. Your friends will “sheer” envy you wearing this printed sheer top from Loft. Light and feminine, it can transition from a “cool” evening to a cold night by simply adding this season’s signature item “the blazer”. When the weather outside is frightful, thrown on a beautiful cape in camel by LOFT. The spice colored turtle neck adds a pop of brilliant color and allows you to try color blocking with the magenta slacks. Gloves are elegant and classy…and they keep your hands warm. Target has a plethora of fashionable gloves that complete any look with style. Next month we predict it will be colder, stay tuned to see how our style mavens dress the part.

Color blocking took the season by storm! Houstonians enjoyed mixing and matchng bold colors and solid geometric shapes to create seriously eye catching looks. Model is wearing a green wool coat from Zara with a silk yellow and black bold color blocking shell top and contrasting orange and navy blue color blocking skirt. HAIR STYLIST COEUS Hair Tips By Ashley Sparks
DAILY KEY POINTS OF HEALTHY HAIR: KEEPING BODY IN LONG OR MEDIUM LENGTH HAIR:
When dealing with long hair or hair with medium length, you sometimes end up with less body. After a long day hair may fall limp due to humidity, friction, or weight of the hair. With a simple 1, 2, 3 step you can achieve body that will last through the day without a touch of heat from a curling utensil. Things needed:
• A Non-alcohol based wrap foam setting lotions such as Proclaim foam • Any light hold aerosol hair spray • 6 to 8 (length appropriate) flexi rod rollers • Rat tail comb.
This procedure is best used at night before bed so the curl pattern can be created over night, or a couple of hours before an event takes place. Take your rat tail comb part 6 to 8 portions of hair, apply foam to first portion then take flexy rod and roll hair till it reaches the base of head. Take open ends of the flexi rod and bend them inwards creating a secure lock and better chance of creating a tight long lasting curl. Continue this process throughout the whole head and when complete take a silky textured scarf and place over the hair to control frizz while lounging. When ready to take down open Flexi rods and unwind hair in downwards motion not disrupting curl pattern. After all hair is released take fingers and lightly pull apart curls to make hair look fuller. Then take your choice of aerosol hair spray and use at least 2 coats to seal curl giving it the finishing touch and look. This easy tactic will have you looking like you spent time in the morning curling your hair. Items used can be found in local beauty supply store or online.
Kill switch products for problem hair:
Joico K Pak- reconstructor treatment comes w/ a 4 step system to redirect hair breakage to its natural state. This kit contains Chelating Shampoo, Cuticle Sealer, Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, and the Intense Hydrator. First apply the Chelating Shampoo for cleansing the hair removing product buildup and mineral deposits. Second apply the Cuticle Sealer which is the acidifier that tightens and smooths the core and shaft of cuticle. Third apply the Deep Penetrating Reconstructor for the rebuilding and improving of the structure of dry damaged hair. Last but not least apply the Intense Hydrator which restores shine, seals off cuticle, improves manageability, and elasticity. Do this treatment once a month as a restoration regime and you will be sure to see how much your hair has improved. This product can be found online or in your nearest Armstrong McCall. Product I can’t live w/out:
Organic Root Stimulator Edge control: one product that is a woman’s must have is Organic Root Stimulator Edge Control. Small enough to fit in your purse this product is great for all types of textures and patterns of hair. Edge control does just what it says. Behind the Design
Featured Designer: Danny Nguyen Written By: Alicia Brownell If you are not yet convinced that Houston is on its way to being a major influence on the fashion industry, please get acquainted with Danny Nguyen. It seems fashion has always been his destiny, though it took sometime to make itself plain to him. His skill set however, was in place from an early age. It is that same set of skills that is thrusting his name, brand, and career to the top.

Danny Nguyen
Danny and his family came to the US when he was a young child. His mother, a refugee from Vietnam, worked all day and all night as he recalls. “She worked for little money to feed the family,” he said remembering the struggle to survive. He says the experience taught him to appreciate the little things in life. Though his mom was skilled in many areas of making and mending clothes, she worked mainly as a seamstress to make ends meet. When Danny first started to seriously pursue fashion, his mother was opposed to the idea. “She didn’t want me to have to work as hard as she did,” he said. Danny says she gave him tough love, not ‘helping’ him at first so that he would see the reality of how hard things really were. When he started acing his design courses at HCC and winning every competition he entered, she started to come around.
Danny had attempted to go the route of a traditional college. He just didn’t know what he wanted to do. When he’d dismissed being a doctor, lawyer, engineer or some other profession he says many Asian young adults accept, he decided on art. Danny took a few art classes but was not fulfilled until he returned to what had become second nature growing up . . . fashion. After all, he had been helping his hard-working mom since as early as 10 or 11 years old. He would cut materials and sew on the sewing machine. Fast forward to present day and you can see that background is paying off, exponentially.
explains Danny. He says he thinks the way an element actually feels to the hand is important, as opposed to just the look of it. His favorite textures mimic some of those found in nature, where he says one surface can give multiple feelings. Danny also plays with volume a lot and thinks the couture aspects of his pieces make people value them like artwork. His current clients range from older men seeking custom suits to younger women wanting a one-of-a-kind dress for a professional event or gala. He does at times offer more ready to wear for the younger, faster moving audience.
Danny Nguyen’s style reflects his personal love for texture and gives credit to the hard-work ethic he was reared in. His brand, Danny Nguyen Couture, offers custom pieces with intricate detailing. “I did some sculpting in High School”
His Fall/Winter 2011 show at Momentum Mini was a mustsee. In menswear Danny Nguyen Couture offered perfectly tailored suit jackets in royal prints and finishes. The female models in the show donned asymmetrically

detailed gowns, sheer fabrics and prints fitting with the shows theme: the beauty found in the disaster of a Caribbean storm. Danny’s goal is to expand to national distribution. We certainly hope he does soon. He is a great representation of the fashion prowess in our city. Danny’s ready to wear items now can be found at Lavo Collections. Winter can be so gloomy so why not cheer it up with some Cubanistic trends that are bright and colorful
In Houston the seasons
change just a little bit differently than the rest of the country. Summer tends to linger just a little longer causing our fall fashion to run into winter before we can really “dress the part”. In celebration of Houston’s uniquely warm weather COEUS Magazine gives you CUBANISMO; a combination of vintage summer and fall’s boho trend.

Makeup Tip There’s beauty in simplicity. Don’t over power great skin with too much makeup. Instead, use makeup to enhance your features. This season’s beauty trend is “the red lip”. Red lips look best on soft supple lips. Chapped lips + red lipstick = 1 SERIOUS NO NO Find the right shade depending on your skin tone. With so many colors on the market today, treat yourself by asking a proffesional what shade suites you best. Many Department stores offer free advice...much better then running back and forth trying to find the right shade on your own.

SKIN CARE TIP
Humidity and Arid Climates can wreak havoc on your skin. Keep your skin clear and beautiful every season with a good skin care routine. Wash daily with a gentle facial cleanser: try a cream cleanser during winter months, follow with a non alcohol astringent (witch hazel) and MOISTURIZE!
Spice up that look with Red Hot Lips!

CIRCLE OF FIRE By Alicia Brownell
Everyone has a story; some are funny, some are sad, some are private. Most stories chronicle past events, things that we did or that were done to us. It takes a special person to decide to change their story, and to start a new chapter. Justina Page is not only purposely writing new chapters in her own life, she’s helping others find their way to a new and better chapter as well. Justina is the Executive Director of The Amos House of Faith, a non-profit that provides support for burn victims in addition to educating the general public of Houston and surrounding areas. The organization is named in honor of Amos, the infant twin son Justina lost in the house fire that devastated her family in 1999. Justina and Amos’ twin brother Benjamin were badly injured in that fire. Her husband James and their four other sons were thankfully not burned as badly, but the loss would affect each family member in some way. She recalls the immensely difficult journey in her book “The Circle of Fire”, which was published earlier this year. We met up with Justina at the Houston location of Shriners Hospitals for Children, in the Texas Medical Center. She is a member of the hospital’s SOAR (Survivor Offering Assistance Recovery) group and has spoken to patients at the Galveston location about the therapeutic effects of writing a book. Jo Ann Zuniga, the Director of Public Relations for Shriners in Houston and Galveston, told us of what a great asset Justina has been to their hospital system, and to the burn community as a whole. In her extensive volunteer work in the burn community, which spans local and national outlets, Justina had many tell her how helpful the sharing of her story was and that she should “just write a book”. Coupled with the fact that she was reminded of a promise

she’d made to her boys shortly after the fire (telling them one day she would write a book and “be able to let them know more” of what they didn’t quite understand at their young ages) Justina has penned an honest and moving story. The book offers inspiration, encouragement, and a map out of grief of any kind. Justina shares the reality of the wide range of emotions experienced after a tragedy and helps validate all of the emotions as relevant. She even helps caretakers, family and friends have a better understanding of what their loved one really needs in a difficult time, beyond the feel-good fluff we are all taught to say. For burn victims especially, her addressing social re-entry and the challenges of an obviously different physical appearance after burn trauma is valuable insight. It is real life experience in dealing with people who stare, or worse . . . the people who are afraid to look and instead pretend they don’t see you at all. It is insight like this that has “The Circle of Fire” being considered for use in University level curriculums. The fact that the book’s proceeds are directly benefiting The Amos House of Faith is just further evidence of Justina’s overwhelming dedication. “My heart is really in this” Justina said, “I had so much love and support”. She details how writing the book, speaking and volunteering is all part of her way of passing some of that “love” on to others. Her concern is for those who may not have the strong support system she did. Even with her strong-willed personality, her support system and her faith . . . the journey was painful and demanding. Justina’s passion is being there for those who desperately need it; she knows what they are experiencing. In the book, and in person if you get the pleasure, she tells you about her family members who flew down from all over
the country. Some arrived while Justina laid in a coma in the hospital, but her knowing they came gave her strength in her recovery. She beams with pride and love when talking about her church family, especially her Pastor and his wife who gave her a house to live in after her family’s house was destroyed in the fire. Her faith in God is also a big role in her story; she offers prayers and conversations with Him throughout the book. As for her husband James, “I couldn’t do it without him”, she said. You can tell they are partners in everything: the journey, the passion and the giving. Justina says the biggest challenge in front of her now is getting exposure. “Getting people to know does take some money” she said. It is important to her that people know, “what’s going on, what we need, and how (you) can help”. “The Circle of Fire” is certainly a big step in the right direction in that regard. Ultimately Justina hopes to open a family room, giving burn victims’ families a place to stay when home is too far from the medical center (where most patients of serious burns are treated). She told us the story of the wife and daughter of a burn victim who had burns on over 90% of his body. “They didn’t want to leave him, so they spent the year on hospital couches”. It is front line observations like this that make Justina not just an advocate, but a champion. From fire safety and prevention, to help for burn victims, training for volunteers, and support for everyone in between Justina is a force.

A Non-Fictional, Painting Protagonist By Anthony Tung Nguyen
O
bie Dozier. With a name as flashy as that, a person could easily enter a number of professions--athlete, fashion designer, multi-millionaire “actor”(aka: Reality-TV star). However, when said person possesses an extraordinary ability to draw, their talents are much better suited to becoming an artist. From his earliest days in Houston, Obie’s family took notice of his knack for drawing. Akin to a mother’s frustration caused by the future-drummer who bangs on her pots and pans all day, the Dozier family was less-thanenthusiastic about Obie’s use of their walls as the canvases for his first masterpieces. Though temporarily discouraged by the punishment he received for his home renovations, Obie was not deterred for long. In the 5th grade, he started selling drawnportraits to his classmates. Pretty sweet gig for a 10-year-old, huh? (I’d say so--he used all his profits on sweets.) Throughout his adolescence, Obie’s art teachers praised his skill as a self-taught artist. However, Mrs. Smith, his 7th grade art teacher, gave him special art projects to foster his talent and feed his creative hunger to express himself through his art. Although his passion lied in the flow of a pencil or paintbrush in his hands, following high school graduation, Obie enlisted in the United
States Air Force and pursued other interests. He would resume his first love and gift from God when he began painting professionally in 1996. Obie is best known for enhancing the works of other artists and with his acute eye for detail and matching color, he has earned widespread notoriety as a Master Highlighter, particularly due to his contributions to the artwork of Thomas Kinkade. At Somerset House Publishing Company, Obie was known as the Master Enhancer for several well-known artists such as Charles Fracé, Rod Chase and Howard Behrens. He has also enhanced the work of renowned Western artist Jack Terry. Obie has created dozens of original paintings. He see’s art as more than simply a commercial enterprise--some creations are just sacred and priceless. “Beyond Still Water”, a painting depicting San Diego’s harbor, resides in Obie’s home. This was the first of Obie’s pieces to be reproduced into Giclee (the standard of fine-art print).
One untitled piece, a picturesque scene of a cottage with swans in the water, was a gift to his wife, Norma, before they were married. Thus, it rightfully belongs solely to Obie’s private collection. Never one to stay in his comfort zone, Obie has painted murals, backdrops and signs for businesses and churches; designed and painted a line of greeting cards; crafted wood and leather goods; and even painted on ostrich and emu eggs. Obie gives all the glory to God for blessing him with his talent. He continues to reside in Houston where he is a father of three and a grandfather of five. As another “Obi” so famously said, “May the Force be with you,” Obie Dozier continues to be a force in the art world. Lucky for us, his force exists in a galaxy not so far away at all. Obie’s work is currently on display and on-sale at Sagemont Church Bookstore in Southeast Houston.

Full of melodic beats and intense guitar rifts The Fly Trap brings instrumental and original music back to the Houston music scene. | By Christine Crott | I see that you are a new band in Houston, how did everyone meet? Bryan: I met the Machine back in early 2011. We had the same taste in music and had a mutual interest in starting a band and so we started jamming together. I haven’t heard any sound quite like this before, it’s nice to see a band going against the grain. What genre would you consider yourselves? Machine: We mostly consider ourselves alternative fusion with an edge of experimental rock. B: We also have a little bit of hints of jazz, blues and alternative. What made each one of you want to start playing your specific instruments? M: When I was a young kid, the first album I heard was Led Zeppelin II, after hearing that all I wanted to do was play just like Jimmy Page. B: Growing up I enjoyed listening to the Seattle grunge scene like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. For some reason I always singled out the drum in my head, I guess that’s what always stood out to me the most.
I notice you use a lot of vintage effects pedals...how long have you been playing the guitar Machine? M: I’ve been playing the guitar for about 19 years. I started using vintage and rare effects pedals so I could achieve experimental sounds and tones. What has been the most memorable show for each of you? B: I remember a show that we opened up for, all of us were hanging out back stage getting ready for the show. It was a good feeling. Later that night during the performance, Machine was rocking so hard that he almost lost his footing, made me glad I was sitting down. M: Our first show, I got so psyched to see the energy we were projecting and the crowds response to our music. What are your aspirations for the band? M: To get our music out there to the masses. B: To get true fans of real music, no cookie cutter. When your performing live it looks like your all having a really good time. Besides music do you have a lot in common? M: We are all Star Wars fans and for the most part, we all have the same taste in music. B: We seem to all have the same sense of humor, being able to laugh at each other is a very important thing, especially in a band.
“ I F YO U P L AY W H AT YO U L O V E , A N D N O T W H AT YO U R T O L D , U LT I M AT E LY T H E S K Y I S T H E L I M I T.” I do hear a bit of Tool and Buckethead influences’ in your music, are any of you fans? M: Definitely yes... not only a fan of their sound but also respected them because they both were the type that went against the grain. At the time they came out, there was nothing quite like it out there. B: Of course anyone that appreciates good music would have to love those bands. What particular style of drumming would you say you use Bryan? B: I would say a jazzy-rock type with influences’ of Abe Cunningham (DefTones) and Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle). Who taught you how to drum? B: The radio and listening to other bands, I picked up stuff on my own as well. The radio was my drum instructor. How did you come up with the name The Fly Trap? B: Machine said so! (laughs) M: I’m very much into outer-space and life beyond our planet, therefore we got the name The Fly Trap from an old WWII UFO testing ground in Germany. So is everyone originally from Texas? M: I’m from Southern California and moved out to Houston in 2005. B: I was born in Shamrock, Texas but later moved to Colorado Springs where I went to High School. When I was 21 I moved out to Houston. Machine I have to ask what’s up with the mask? M: What mask? No seriously, I like wearing the mask because its fun and I enjoy it!
What do you think of the music that’s currently coming out today? M: I don’t really listen to the music out today, especially the scream metal bands coming out, they all seem to sound the same to me. I’m more into underground music that doesn’t get much radio air play and has a sound that’s not like anything else. B: I enjoy the Chili Peppers, but newer bands coming out mostly sound the same to me. Your songs are all full of strong transitions, energetic and very catchy. I have caught myself humming the tunes. Who writes your music? M: I’m the primary writer, awhile back I came up with allot of the music. When we started up the band we did collaborate, and what you hear today is the finished product. Where do you see yourselves in the next few years? B: Overseas expanding our sound world wide, hopefully Japan and Europe. The industry is becoming more congested with start off artist’s...does this effect your confidence in getting to the next level? M: No it doesn’t because we are like no other artist. But it does affect my confidence on how other people may react to a new sound. B: We like what we play and I feel that if you play what you love, and not what your told, ultimately the sky is the limit. Everybody loves video games and there are tons to choose from this year, so if you need some ideas on what to get your favorite gamer have no fear, there are plenty of games that are out and are coming out just in time for the holidays and I’m here to tell you about them. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is the next chapter in the best-selling series, filled with a griping story mode and a competitive multiplayer. This game has already broke records in the first week of its release. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is out now and for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii and Ds. If shooting human rivals down and playing in familiar places isn’t for you, and you want to shoot monsters in a futuristic world, then Gears of War 3 is your choice. Don’t worry there are some big games for those fans too. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the newest installation of this massive saga. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 It seems just like yesterday the world was introduced to the long anticipated Marvel vs. Capcom 3 but that game is so February 2011, say hello to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and its bigger and badder than ever! Sure Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds was fun with insane combos and gameplay, but it just seemed like it needed more. Capcom heard from their fans and they delivered. Instead of making DLC (downloadable content) for the original game they decided to make a brand new version. Sure it seems like you just bought the first one but if you can shell out the money for this forty dollar game it is completely worth it. Not only are there twelve brand new characters added to the game bringing the total up to 48 (if you don’t count the two downloadable fighters) and 8 new stages they added new changes to each and every one of the past characters and all the game modes. Each character of the original cast has been tweaked to make them more efficient by giving them changes to their movement, their specials, and even a few of the characters received brand new moves. Ryu, to any gamer of the series knows that he has three basic special moves, but not anymore, can now shoot an invisible hadouken that travels across screen, blowing up on the opponents side. He also recieved a buffing special like Wolverines ‘Bezerker Charge’ that buffs all of his moves making him faster and stronger.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is the next chapter in the best-selling series, filled with a griping story mode and a competitive multiplayer.

Gaming Review
this game a must have. Star Wars: The Old Republic comes out Dec 20, 2011 and is for the PC. If you’re looking for something specifically for the kids don’t worry there are plenty of games to choose from. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the newest game for the popular Nintendo icon and a must have for any Zelda fan. Skyward Sword stays true to the plat forming and adventuring game play and uses the Wii’s motion controller to simulate epic sword combat. This game may not have a multiplayer aspect but the single player story is worth it. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is out now for the Nintendo Wii. If you want a game that everyone can play and enjoy then Rayman Origins is perfect. Unlike the recent Rayman games this one has no Rabbids and goes back to the characters plat forming roots. This is a 2D side scrolling classic plat form game that can have up to four players. A great game for friends with an amazing unique visual art style make it one of a kind. Rayman Origins is out now for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3Ds and the VITA. These are just some of the big named video games that are out for the holidays and will bring joy to whoever plays them.
This is just one of the character changes and any player who has played the original will have a blast learning the new moves of the characters they mastered and come up with new and crazy combos to destroy their rivals. The biggest part of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the twelve new characters. All twelve of the characters excluding one are brand new to the series and bring a fresh, new, and fun experience to the game. For the Capcom side you get Strider Hiryu (returning fan favorite), Firebrand (of the Ghosts’n’Goblins series), Nemesis (from the Resident Evil series), Phoenix Wright (from his own Nintendo DS games), Vergil (from Devil May Cry series) and Frank West (from the Deadrising series). For the Marvel side you get Hawkeye (the master archer of the Avengers), Ghost Rider (the flaming skull devils bounty hunter), Doctor Strange (the master of the mystic arts), Iron Fist (the Kung-Fu legend), Rocket Raccoon (the interplanetary explorer) and Nova (the intergalactic solider). Each new character is unlike any of the original cast and each is unique to their own way. Phoenix Wright, a lawyer, is one of the most unique characters in the cast; seeing him taking on famous super heroes and villains is one of the things I found most enjoyable. No one can escape the law! The thrill of finding a brand new team that works well together, and coming up with brand new combos that make ones jaw drop is what Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is all about. Adding 8 new stages also adds to the fun of fighting your friends in new worlds from both the Capcom and Marvel universe. Another big addition to the game is adding two new modes, Galactus mode and the Heroes vs. Heralds mode. With Galactus mode you get to be the mighty planet destroyer himself and stop the heroes from defeating you, sure this mode of the game is fun to slap around the heroes with ease but it’s a little too easy. Upon the release of Ultimate
Capcom announced that the Heroes vs. Heralds mode would be a free DLC add on, and puts friends against each other with unique playing card abilities such as Invisibility, Projectile Invincibility and Enhanced Speed. Both of these modes are a welcome change to the original and just make the game more enjoyable to play. When playing the original a lot of fans complained about the online features, like the lag or no spectator mode and even about connecting to matches. Well Capcom listened and gave the fans what they wanted. With the new spectator mode the player can watch the different characters fight, and learn what teams they use and how they play, instead of watch two cards bump into each other like the original. Capcom has also updated their online connection. Now the player can see when another player is online and aren’t completely surprised if they “rage quit” on said player. Connecting to an online match was also fixed, instead of searching for matches for a few seconds then dropping you back at the main menu, it will search until a match is found or until you back out. All these changes make the competitive online mode even better than the first. Sure when you look at how they just released the first game 6 months ago, and that they should have made all of this DLC, it really is a brand new game and for just $40 bucks it’s worth it. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 gets a 9 out of 10 in my book and is a must have for any fighting game fan.

Robyn Troup of Beverly Kills By: Nikiage Washington
“Weird”, “Trashy Punk Rocker”, and “Strongwilled” are just some of the words Robyn Troup of Beverly Kills uses to describe herself. Fellow Houstonian and winner of the highly televised Grammy contest “My Grammy Moment”, featuring Justin Timberlake, Robyn Troup is making industry waves. Troup is the “front man” of a 5 piece band by the name of Beverly Kills. We caught up with Robyn to get the exclusive story of her humble Texas beginnings to the progress of her upcoming album. COEUSMAG: Hey Robyn, so nice to get this interview with you! How are you doing? Robyn: I’m doing great! Just in New York right now exploring the city. CM: Great! So first off, where are you originally from? R: I’m actually from Houston, Texas! I went the Jack Yates High School and everything! CM: Really! So where are you currently living now? R: I’m in North Hollywood, California now! CM: So how did you go from Houston, Texas to North Hollywood, California? R: My first encounter to California was attending the University of Southern California where I auditioned for American Idol in 2006. I made it through to Hollywood, but was then eliminated. CM: What happened after the elimination from American Idol? R: I entered a contest called “My Grammy Moment”, which is where unsigned artists get to compete for a special performance on the Grammy’s. The year I entered the winner got to perform with Justin Timberlake. CM: Wow. That’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. So I know you actually won the contest, but what happened after the win? R: Well my winnings from the My Grammy Moment were soon taken from me because it conflicted with the contract I signed with American Idol during the audition process. It was surely a great challenge I had to endure in the industry, I had to start right back to square one, but this time I decided to go about it with the music I want to be known for. CM: Crazy how things work out! So what made you pursue a career in music anyway? R: Singing has always been second nature to me! As far as I can remember I was singing or doing something musical from childhood till now. CM: Do you play any instruments then? R: Yeah, I play a little piano and guitar. CM: If you were looking for inspiration for your music, who would you listen to for that certain inspiration? R: I’m such a diverse music head! I would have
”I don’t follow people or trends and I want my music to communicate that to people. It’s okay to be different or weird, because that’s what makes you who you are.” - Robyn Troup
to say, Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, Paramore, No Doubt, and Beyonce! CM: If you could collaborate with anyone on the planet, who would it be? R: I’ll have to go with international artist, Robyn. I know we have similar names and that’s not why I choose her either. It’s just that her music always sends a different kind of vibe or message for me. CM: SUCCESS! What does it mean to Robyn Troup of Beverly Kills? R: It means the simplest things like handling everyday things without worry!! It’s crazy because for me it doesn’t take much to be considered successful! I just want to be able to be an entertainer for a living. CM: Describe yourself in three words! R: I would have to say Weird, Fashionable, and Huh!! I don’t know where the Huh came from but I’ll use it! CM: Does the description of yourself also describe your talent? R: In a way, Yes! I am my music! I’m moodinfluenced, emotionally driven, aggressive, strong-willed, and independent, which is all the elements of my music. CM: What do you want your music to communicate to an audience? R: I want my music to tell people about selflove, about questioning authority, and being free thinking about some things. I don’t follow people or trends and I want my music to communicate that to people. It’s okay to be different or weird, because that’s what makes you who you are. CM: It is well known that you are very fashionable, give us a description of your own personal style? R: My personal style is 60-80’s era, vintage, trashy, punk rock glam! I dress how I feel! CM: So you are a moody-dresser as I like to say? R: Yeah!! I’m never the same everyday! CM: Do you have any favorite designers? R: Of course! I love Alexander McQueen (RIP) and Jeremy Scott! They are both cutting edge designers! CM: What is ONE product you can’t live without? R: One product is so hard can I give four? They would be my Ipod, Tina Turner, Internet, and Shoes!! I love shoes! N: Great who doesn’t! So let’s talk about your first single and what are you up to now? R: It’s currently in the works now and will hopefully be released in 2012! I’m currently working on finishing the album, working some shows in LA and finding a DJ replacement for the band! N: Wow! You surely are busy!! One last question! What’s the first thing that comes to your head NOW? R: I Need A Drink! Robyn is a true inspirational talent and we look forward to seeing what great things she has in store for us this coming year! IM AN ADDICT I love how things become more vivid at 3 A.M. when your mind should be resting. My mind does the exact opposite; it kicks into information overload! Random thoughts race through my mind with questions and answers to things I thought about two weeks ago! While staring at T.V. in deep deep thought, not really watching the t.v. per se or paying attention to what I’m doing. I started thinking about one of my favorite books, “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. I decided to watch the movie which was just as AMAZING! After watching it for the 10th time, it hit me, “bam!” As entertaining and adorable as Isla Fisher is portraying Rebecca Bloomwood, her character speaks volumes about the forces addictions can have on you. Towards the end of the movie when her secret and lies have all been uncovered, she is asked, “Why do you shop?” Rebecca tearfully replies, “When I shop the world gets better, the world is better. Then it’s not anymore and I have to do it again.” Did you notice the happiness or “high” she receives from shopping? “If a boyfriend or girlfriend doesn’t fit, you can return them 7 days later for a soft cashmere sweater!” That’s precisely what it is, a relationship, a dysfunctional and a dependant relationship at that. In quick contrast, her tone diminishes to hopelessness in the end as she resigns herself to the unhealthy cycle of impulse shopping and the resulting debt it leaves behind. Rebecca Bloomwood was a slave to her addiction and a slave to her emotions. I think if we’re honest with ourselves, we all are or have been, slaves to something at one point
42 | COEUS | DECEMBER 2011
or another. For me, that something used to be food. Food seemed to be the instant antidote, the best bandaid, the ultimate form of escape--especially sweets and carbs! Alcohol, nicotine, money, possessions, food, sex, relationships, drugs, tanning (saw that on the news last week) so I didn’t feel alone, you name it! These things can get their hooks into us so deep until we’ve forgotten what our lives were like before an inanimate object controlled us....Then what???? INSANITY... that’s what! Yet we have assuredly all experienced this form of madness…this obsession that keeps us from dealing with our real issues. We return over and over to that thing we don’t want to do and swear to never do it again. We buy those shiny red heels, eat that third piece of chocolate cake, or smoke just one more cigarette. Yet, none of these things satisfy. They will demand more from us; require us to return to them continually to be seemingly satiated. With each return, we have less of ourselves intact. I’ve heard insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results. Just as we have dysfunctional “relationships” with the things that entangle us (and promise happiness), it is a Relationship that’s needed to solve these self-defeating cycles of ours. In the “epilogue” of the movie during the credits, Rebecca tells of her success in being free from her relationship with her credit card. She proudly announces that she now has a real relationship with a person who loves her and never declines her. That there is the solution to our addiction problems! And I’m not talking about a boyfriend, but the only truth-based relationship with God, a higher power. He to whom
some of you pray to at night! If you even pray…but anyway, these relationships are always there but we sometimes don’t reach out to them until you have nowhere else to turn, like our last resort. Why is that? I mean yeah, I know how defeating and hopeless it feels to step up to my problems, carbohydrates over and over only to be knocked down, still shackled. Giving up seemed a much easier option, better to resign myself to the reality of these constant companions than to keep fighting and losing. Thankfully He does not give up, when we do. Yet we still wait till it gets bad to ask for help! My freedom from food addiction came with no effort or work on my part. I even convinced myself that I was okay this way and didn’t need to be freed; this way of living had simply become my reality. It was a struggle for me to identify what I really needed in my life and to remove myself from the unhealthy distractions. I could not believe it when I started to see the changes in myself. It was like being released from the hypothetical shackles of my addictions and really finding time to embrace the real me. Yet, His way seemed almost too easy, too effortless. Is this how He desires to take care of all of our problems? YES! Stop striving PEOPLE and wake up! Our cooperation is needed and we all need to remember that. You know it’s funny how easy it is for us to believe we’ve “got this”.... No, we’re still in need. We most definitely do NOT “got this!” Don’t wait till your addictions ruin your life completely before asking for help. They will control you until you find out how to control them! Don’t wait for an intervention from your friends and family like Rebecca Bloomwood. Take a long look at yourself in the mirror and admit you’re an Addict just like everyone else. Now what are you going to do about it? xoxo Lisa Marie, I am a Addict

BEAUTY COEUS Hello Beauties! By: Paulette Prevost
Everybody has a natural beauty to them and does cost an arm, leg and two kidneys to maintain it. To my ladies out there who love fashion and makeup but on a strict budget, having to care for your kids, pay your bills, change your oil in the car, fix your flat tire, and mow your own lawn (lol) if you don’t have a good man. Well here is a few beauty tips using very cheap household items and products. As for me I love to remove my makeup using Mac’s makeup remover wipes, but danggggggggg $15 for 30 wipes or $19 for 45. C’mon nah. What if it takes 2 a day? Most days I wear my makeup to work and if me and my Boyfriend go out to dinner I like to feel fresh so I shower, remove my make and reapply. When we return home, I have to remove my makeup again. Some may say I’m wasting makeup but hey. So I have a remedy to that.
1 Aloe Vera water Extra Virgin 1 Olive Oil (small bottle) $4.50
1 50ct round cotton pads $1.00 1 Small squeeze bottle $1.00 Look at your squeeze bottle (visualize it 4 equal parts). Pour the aloe Vera water to ¼. Pour extra virgin olive oil (EVO) to the 2nd ¼. Then shake both liquids together and squeeze unto cotton pad. Hold the cotton pad on eye for about 3 seconds to allow the oils to breakup the makeup and then wipe clean. Do this on both eyes and face. Your face is now cleaned and conditioned naturally. Oh and no harsh smell.
A Sip Of Love Non-Profit: I Am Waters Foundation By: Alicia Brownnell Canned goods or an unwrapped toy . . . these are probably the two most common things we think to give to give to those in need, especially around this time of year. While these are great gifts and much appreciated how much is overlooked in the daily need of someone less fortunate? How can we really know what is needed unless we’ve been there? A woman in line for a food bank once told me “they give us cans, but we don’t have can openers”. The simple statement speaks volumes to the disconnect between donations and practical need. Thankfully, one Houston area organization has identified once such oversight, and turned it into a powerful opportunity to meet one of the most essential needs while offering inspiration. The I Am Waters Foundation ‘is a non-profit organization based in Houston, Texas dedicated to providing fresh, clean water to the homeless.’ Successful print and fashion model Elena Davis founded the organization. She’d grown up as a struggling child of a single mother of four. After career success, and an ideal marriage & children she was given the opportunity to rediscover her purpose in life in lieu of the loss of a family member. The resulting initiative makes use of a glaring physical need, by infusing the water with the a few spiritual special ingredients. Each bottle is artfully and caringly designed to be encouragement and well as nourishment. DREAM, LOVE, HOPE, and PEACE, are the messages on the water bottles. Each one incorporates the telling logo of a heart with a water droplet in the middle. The word, the symbol and the free refreshing water make for a powerful message that speaks to those facing the most challenging situations. Elena’s story of a woman she encountered at an intersection makes you value every drop of clean drinking water you’ve ever taken for granted. Partnering with major shelters and organizations as outlets makes the concise mission all the more effective. So the next time you twist open a bottle of your favorite brand of H2O, consider yourself privileged. The next time you would like to graciously give to someone in need, consider a slightly different approach in addition to your canned goods. By Regina Moretto
There are so many tragic and devastating events occurring in the world today that it seems the world is “going to hell in a hand basket”. We try to remain positive and objective but we are bombarded by negativity through the media as well. In spite of all the struggle and adversity there IS a light at the end of the tunnel. Fiona Dawson; a beaming ray of positivity and gratitude shared her vision of a world free of “discrimination of any form, against anyone, anywhere in the world” with COEUS Magazine. Born in Bury St. Edmunds in the county of Suffolk, England, Dawson always had a passion for volunteering and charity. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, she volunteered in Bangladesh teaching English. Dawson’s travels and charity did not end with Bangladesh; she spent a year teaching in Lisbon, Portugal, worked at “Casa de Esperanza de los Niños” for abused and neglected HIV positive children, the “Houston Area Women’s Center”, and the “Bering Omega Community Services”, which provides “compassionate care for people living with HIV and
Dawson says the catalyst for starting her own show was Oprah’s contest offering contestants their own show on the new OWN network last year. She wrote her concept, 3 minute demo, and in the process found herself. “From there it didn’t matter if I won the competition or not, I won in finding me,” recalls Dawson. Dawson found that she was able to combine her passion for human rights, promoting human equality, and the “sheer joy” of being on camera into the perfect combination and reflection of “who I am and what I love to do.” When COEUS Magazine asked, “What’s next?” Dawson smiled. She’s continuing to pitch the show to networks and production companies looking for the right partners to join with her and produce the show on TV and the internet. Currently, you can visit her website: www. fionadawson.com to see her promo reel and find more information on how you can get involved.

audience is motivated to change their actions and their attitude. They are presented with ways they can volunteer their time, donate money and understand how to talk about the issues covered.” Dawson believes “everyone deserves equal rights, equal respect, and equal responsibility.” She seeks to promote a stronger sense of social responsibility and awareness that we lack in our society is hungry for today. She strongly believes that we all share an equal sense of responsibility for our fellow humankind. Simply because something is happening in another country to someone else does not mean it does not affect you. As a socially conscious culture and society our actions effect more than our local surroundings but ripple the world over. The idea that we can create a positive ripple could possibly change the world. That’s why we at COEUS find Fiona Dawson so fascinating.
AIDS.” Her accomplishments and involvement speak volumes about her commitment to humanity and yet, she still desires to do more. Dawson is creating a show called “fiona”. “fiona” is a more intimate look at social issues around the world. Instead of the traditional “behind the camera” documentary approach, Dawson interacts with her subjects and relates to them on a human level. Some of the topics discussed on “fiona”future episodes include: sex trafficking in India“human trafficking”, AIDS in Africa Romanian orphans living with HIV, and prostitution in India a wheelchair basketball team in Lebanon. “fiona” presents positive ways people are working to end discrimination against anyone, anywhere in the world.” “The program is grounded on the premise that every human being has felt some form of discrimination in their life. However, rather than focusing on the negative, tragic side of this reality, “fiona” showcases positive, inspiring acts of human kindness where charities and volunteers are working to end discrimination and are in fact making this world a better place to live.
