Welcome

e amm ogr

There have been loads of changes recently, but our most exciting news is all the wonderful signage that’s appearing within the building inside and out. Next time you come down, take a minute to admire our three metre steel hamilton house sign on the canopy, especially beautiful at night with a changeable backlit glow. as always there’s full listings inside including a new hula hooping class, music therapy workshop and heroes of ping pong exhibition come down, get involved and enjoy what’s on offer this month!

Although here in the UK this month is definitely dominated by thoughts of halloween there are also other celebrations going on around the world. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican celebration that falls on November 1st where families get together to remember and celebrate the lives of their friends and ancestors who have died. Plans are made throughout the year to gather offerings for their loved one’s graves that include their favourite items and the celebrations are usually fun and joyful where silly anecdotes and stories are told to remember those that have passed and celebrate their souls! Check out the Day Of The Dead inspired recipie overleaf... Coexist support workspaces for over 200 creative practitioners, artists, designers, social enterprises and small businesses. We also provide community space for people to create, interact, learn, move and play. If you’re interested in volunteering and contributing to the overall development of Coexist, email: reception@coexistuk.org to organise an interview.

Gorditas con Calabaza Picante y Salsa de Poblano

(Gorditas ‘Little Fat Ones’ with spicy pumpkin filling and creamy green pepper sauce!):

1. Mix the ingredients together and separate into 5-6 balls. Flatten each ball until it is about half a centimetre thick. Fry each of the flattened gorditas in oil until they puff up slightly in the middle and then let them rest on kitchen roll to soak up the oil. cut the gorditas open. 2. Cube roast the pumpkin, chilli, garlic and onion in oil for about half an hour in the oven at 180 degrees centigrade. When the pumpkin mixture is ready fill the gorditas with it and grated cheddar cheese then re-fry on a hot, dry pan. Leave them to rest on kitchen roll. 3. Roast the green peppers at the same time as the pumpkins. When they have roasted chop them up pretty finely. Fry up the garlic and then add the pepper, add the butter and the cream and bring it to the boil. add the chopped coriander and let it simmer, Add the veg stock and whizz it up in a blender.

Once everything is ready, spoon some yummy sauce over the filled gorditas and serve with some rice and beans- maybe some mariachi music in the background! 1. Gorditas (cornmeal pitta pocket): 2 cups of corn masa 1/3 of a cup of warm water 1 tablespoon of butter 2. Filling: Grated cheddar cheese 1 small pumpkin chopped into cubes 2 chopped chillis (depending on how spicy you like it!) 1 chopped red onion 3 cloves of chopped garlic few sloshes of olive oil 3. Sauce: Green peppers (poblano are the best but bell peppers and a little bit of spicy green chilli would work as well)

Small pot of cream Bunch of coriander Tablespoon of butter 1/2 cup of veg stock Garlic

OCT Music @The CanTeen

Fri 18

Old Man Diode + Alex Scott - Epic electronic producer Old Man Diode sculpts apocalyptic post-soul soundscapes peopled with amazing vocalists including Reprezent's Onallee, I am Fya & Bristol fave Beth Rowley like you never heard her before. It's a kind of operatic dubstep, spacy, sinister, clever and confusing all at the same time. Marvellous!

Tues 1

Lukas Drinkwater - Exeter-based singer-songwriter tests his easy way with intricate

lyrics setting them to equally intricate, rippling finger-style guitar.

- Once you hear his conscious and creative lyrics you realise that his suit, tie and haircut make a pretty feeble disguise for Billy Rowan's left field credentials.

Sun 20 Dele Sosimi's Afrobeat Vibration Experience - If you know your stuff

Wed 2

Jez Hellard - a Man of many parts, sings and plays a fine guitar and a brilliant harmonica too. much in demand in bands like Kalavela and accompanying the great Rory McLeod.

Thur 3

Cocos Lovers - jangling African guitars together with banjos and a musical saw, while their lush vocal harmonies blend easily with it all.

Fri 4

Rogora Khart + Vlad - They claim to be Black Sea punks but there's a decidedly Welsh

Louise Jordan - As well as interpreting traditional music Louise writes reflective songs that catch at life's significant moments. She plays piano, guitar and cello and sings with an unaffected clarity.

Tues 22

Jon Kenzie - his debut album 'Not Much Technical Stuff' says it all. straightforward rocking funk grooves underpinning soul and blues-influenced original songs.

Sun 6

Streetworks - No ordinary accordionist,

in fact, Karen Street pioneered the squeezebox as a modern jazz instrument long ago. Streetworks is her latest jazz experiment.

The pair came up with the idea of writing new music in a classic rocksteady style to be the basis of a jazzy workout and built this 5-piece band around it and, given their track record, it has to be worth checking out.

Tues 15

Jack Pescod & Hannah Vogt - Here's a duo that know how to bring classical music

vocals and seductively seismic bass business. Indonesian vocalist Nova is a vitally important element in adding texture and global style to this hypnotic trance music, all somehow generated from an adapted supermarket trolley. Honest! (sat) Lokhi Terra + Kosta Kostov- With the world at his feet South Asian pianist Kishon Khan seems to want to have it all - and why not? This global big band see no reason why a Bangladeshi folk song and an Afro-Cuban dance groove shouldn’t go together, or a jumping township-jive rhythm shouldn’t fit some Havana-style crooning. Turns out they’re right, too!

Sun 27

Jalia Michto - Ever since Parisian cafe society welcomed pairs of Gypsy-swing guitarists in the 40s it’s been hard to beat that sizzling interplay. Jalla Michto give it all they’ve got.

Mon 28

Canteen Jazz Session

Wed 16 Ross Ainslie & Jariath Henderson - Pipers, yes, and from Scotland - but forget those shortbread-box images. These two hip young dudes play the underarm Border and Uilleann pipes and are as likely to slip into an AC/DC tune or a slinky Arabic groove as something tartan. The trick is simple - they're brilliant musicians with open ears who just happen to play bagpipes.

Soul Struitters - Cool and tasteful jazz-funk fronted by bassman Eric Okafo’s assured vocals and splendidly boasting show-off instrumental work.

- An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tues 29 Donna Macioca & Gideon Conn - When two complete individualists collaborate

then either something amazing or something explosive will happen. This pair are a case in point: Donna Macioca sings poetic lyrics that never quite settle where you think they will, Gideon Conn declaims sharp-eyed leftfield rants that never lose their sense of humour. She has a fantastically expressive voice, he has an intense eye for the real world. Someone light the touch paper ...

- Further proof that Brighton and Bristol share the same musical heartbeat, Buffo’s Wake have that instantly pleasing combination of quirky acoustic music and wryly comical lyrics that we love.
