Tom is very much a character driven illustrator and loves creating quirky characters that the viewer can relate to and believe in. “Immersing myself in a character and their world is a real pleasure for me. Humour plays a large part in my picture book work too, I like to keep things light hearted and whimsical.”

The Coexist Community Kitchen

The Coexist Community kitchen can be hired for all sorts of food adventures and educational workshops. please contact us at: food@coexistuk.org to find out hire rates and availability. A quick interview with Harriet Wilson who will be running Bittersweet (Chocolate), 13th Feb & Sugar and Spice and all things Jolly Nice, 3rd April. I grew up on… a dairy farm. I have memories of almost falling in the huge 1000 litre milk tank. The first time I made Ice cream… was when I was given a £12 ice cream maker from a car boot sale. Nothing will ever live up to that present. While working as a pastry chef… I remember the chefs running around trying to light each others bottoms on fire with blowtorches. My kitchen is a bit more civilised. I set up my business when…I was 16. I funded it with a litter of flat coated retriever puppies. I bottle fed 13 of them and sold 12. I spent my first pay cheque on… inappropriate shoes. I love … dreaming up new ice cream flavours. I get inspired by people and history. I’ve just come up with something pretty special (with the help of a friend and a native Jamaican) called Jamaican guinness punch. Imagine a sweetened guinness head with a bit of a ginger kick. Quote from said Jamaican: “this me culture!”. I’ll be peddling it at St Paul’s carnival. My weirdest food habit is… probably eating whole tubs of ice cream with ease. I’ve tried some weird diets in my time too.... Wouldn’t recommend the banana diet. My proudest moment… Rocking up at my first ice cream gig with airstream in tow. Me in the passenger seat my long suffering dad driving. He’s been likened to an eighties pop star on more than one occasion. Interested in the courses Harriet is running? Sun 16

Mon 17

The Inexplicables - This almost uncategorisable fusion of folk, soul, jazz, reggae and beatbox hip-hoppery should be filed under ‘fresh’, ‘catchy’ or just plain ‘groovy’.

Sergeant Early’s Dream - It’s Paddy time! And who better to jig it up than this

duo version of the acoustic folk outfit that brings fresh style and energy to deeply rooted traditional Celtic music. Paul Bradley (voice/guitar) and Gina Griffin (voice/violin) combine their considerable instrumental skills in the cause of St Patrick and all things Irish.

Tues 18

Mayflys - Like their ephemeral insect inspiration, they bring with them a fleeting sense of the best bits of summer. Happily, however, they bring it all year round.

Wed 19

Luke Concannon & Jimmy Davis + Ella Martini - Quite a package of fireworks this, as two politically acute songwriters (Luke and Jimmy) set out to peddle their newly released wares and prodigious hip-hoppish rhymesmith Ella Martini sneaks into the back of their bus, There’s a big risk her rapid fire lyrics and catchy acoustic guitar accompaniment will upstage the Nizlopi Kid (aka LC) and the rhymetastic JD but somehow we doubt it.

Thur 20

The Big V - They said ‘there’s no excuse for the dull’ and they meant it. This is psych-hop territory, with an eye to the dark side and a blue heartfull of hope.

Fri 21

Flying Ibex + Area Boys - This extraordinarily clever threesome somehow rustle up all the kinds of worldpop music that make for feelgood jollity to be the beguiling soundtrack for their elliptical lyrics. It’s a smooth thing - yet disconcertingly odd, which is as it should be.

Sat 22 Sun 23 Mon 24

Tues 25

Birth of Joy + Kaptin Is Dead - Brooding Dutch rockers Birth of Joy come over

somewhere between The Doors and PIL thanks to declamatory lyrics, upfront organ, clatter mouth drumming and brash riff-rockery.

Matt Holborn Quartet - The ridiculously good fiddler from Tantz, who regularly pass through and blow us all away has a Gypsy Jazz foursome - guess what? They blew us away, too.

Leonie Evans Blues Session - She’s artful enough in that Rae band, but deep down there’s a proper blues belter, Memphis Minnie style, in Leonie Evans heart.

Seznec Brothers - Bona fide brothers who use their voices and a stack of musical instruments to create a fresh-sounding fusion of old-time styles and world music influences. By turns jazzy, folky and sometimes just plain odd they are never less than completely musical and always entertaining.

Wed 26

Phatic - a cool new jazz combo playing a breezy electric style full of melody and imagination.

Thur 27

Solana - Plaintive Spanish guitars meet exuberant Celtic flutes and irrepressible fiddles in a feast of jiggery-polkary.

Fri 28

DA-10 + Diss Miss - OLd-school synth merchant Danalogue meets drum machine devotee 10-David on an asteroid stuck in 1978 and set the controls for the heart of the sun. The future used to sound like this, apparently, but sometimes it still does.

Sat 29

Tankus the Henge + Waxmouse - Jaz Delorean’s ramshackle crew might look well dodgy but the music they make is a reliably brilliant cavalcade of intricate story songs that switch from electroswing to Ennio Moricone.

Sun 30

Nuala Honan + B-Sides - Writer of fiercely fragile songs, player of deftly-wrought guitar and passionate singer of extraordinary charm and style.

Mon 31

Canteen Jazz Session - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes. Design by www.danchernett.com
