news Mural Competition

The Facade Gallery has teamed up with The Canteen to run an open competition for the re-design of one of the most high profile painting walls in Bristol.

The three storey wall sits at the end of The Canteen’s deck, in Stokes Croft, facing one of the city’s last remaining Bankys, and is something of a local landmark. Get involved @ facebook.com/groups/mural.comp

quick menu tip

-225g dried black eye beans, (soaked overnight or quick-soaked) -2 Tbsp olive oil -1 dried red chilli -3 garlic cloves, finely chopped -2-3 bay leaves -1 tsp dried origano -a small bunch of fresh thyme, finely chopped -1 tsp paprika -1 and 1/2 tsp salt

Syrian Black Eye Bean Stew To quick-soak your beans, there’s a trick, it works with all beans: put them in a pan, cover with plenty of water and bring to the boil. Boil for 1-2 mins, then turn off the heat and leave standing, covered, for 1 or 2 hours. Drain. Now add 1 ltr water to the soaked, drained beans and bring to the boil. Turn down and simmer for 40 mins or until tender. Put the oil in a pan on the hob, when hot, put in the whole dry chilli. It will darken and puff up, so quickly put in the garlic and stir. Then pour in the beans and their liquid, the bay leaves, origano, thyme, paprika and salt. Stir to mix and simmer uncovered on low heat for 20 mins. Check for seasoning and adjust if necessary. Serve with rice and greens, or in a soup bowl with some chopped parsley and crusty bread.

Baker Boys The swinging jazz legacy of the late, great Django Reinhardt has never been more sought after, so this coming together of two of our top exponents of Gypsy jazz guitar - Dave Archer (Moscow Drug Club) and Harry Sankey (Modern Gypsy Jazz Quartet) - has to be a jewel in the local scene. The Duckworths this lot perform their strange and surreal songs with whimsical aplomb and musical dexterity. There’s always a smile in there, albeit a Gothic one.

Capoeira is an exciting mix of martial art, dance, theatre, music, song and ritual from Brazil. The Bristol group is part of the international Grupo Capoeira Filhos de Angola (Children of Angola) run by Mestre Laercio. Although capoeira is a martial art, the emphasis is on skill and humour rather than brute force, and the music and dance elements combine in the games of capoeira to create a high energy performance.
