Patrick Atkins Artist of the Month Patrick Atkins is an artist/illustrator whose work ranges from the atmospheric to the jovial. He’s interested in big things, small things and the sometimes vast space in between them, with scale playing a recurring part in his work. Using pencil, print making and mixed media, his portfolio includes books, stills and even some recent forays into animation. Coexist talks to...

City of Bristol College Hamilton House has been proudly facilitating City of Bristol College and Plymouth Universities Theatre Media Performance course since 2014. We recently had a chance to sit down with Paula Whatman (course creator), and course tutor David Straun to discuss the origins, structure and future of COBC at Hamilton House.

Why was the course developed? P: It’s a course franchised by Plymouth University and City of Bristol College (COBC). It’s come out of a need for a more vocational course that isn’t a conservatoire training (a work based learning degree course) for the first two years of a degree and now we’ve got the go ahead (subject to approval) do the final year of the degree here [at Hamilton House] it’s a degree in performance practice and theatre making. What’s really lovely about the foundation degree is that you can find your passion and direct your top-up towards it. What qualifications do you need to get on the course? P: Students come with academic qualifications like A Levels and BTEC, some people come from untraditional routes, but having work based experience. Some have a passion and a desire to perform and are looking for new challanges. What’s the focus of the course? D: It opens up higher education to students who have come from non conventional academic backgrounds. Some of them are straight out of college or A Levels or BTEC, but they also come through lots of different routes such as access courses. The focus is performance, but it opens up lots of pathways. Some people decide that’s where they want to be, others decide they want to move into production. A few students who have left have become involved in festival organisation or events management, some arrive planning to go into teaching.

hamiltonhouse.org

What have your students gone on to do after the course has finished? P: If you’re successful in completing years 1 & 2 you can either leave there, and go straight into the profession, or complete the top-up to a full BA Hons in professional performance practice. All courses run here [Hamilton House] have a huge emphasis on work place learning; for instance getting the skills to be able to run a small theatre company. Current students who started this year could continue through to gain a BA in Professional Theatre Performance. It will also be open to students on other foundation degrees who don’t have top-ups, they will be able to come and do the last year here [at Hamilton House]. Do COBC offer other courses at Hamilton House? D: COBC also offer Dance Theatre Performance and Creative Arts Therapies at Hamilton House. We’re really pleased to be here, It feels supportive, but not too rigid, like a big rubber band where the students external interests feel held. Reflecting on

Pioneering Period Policy Emotional, educational and highly empowering; Alexandra Pope’s half-day seminar outlining the numerous benefits and implications of menstrual awareness has now been and gone. After an at times contentious reaction from the media in it’s lead up, the seminar itself embodied a resounding feeling of hope and optimism. Passionate attendees both local and international, travelled not just to listen but also to express the positive, negative but undeniably prominent effects menstruality has had on their lives. While a focal aspect of the talk was valuing natural cycles in the workplace, a broader desire for systematic and even personal change emerged, one that reflects stronger self-awareness and self-love. Buffalo Skinners

Did someone move Sheffield down onto a bayou? How else to explain the gloriously rich and swampy ‘zydefolk & roll' gumbo this South Yorkshire bunch make?

Laurent Coulondre Trio

One of France's top keyboard players, Laurente Coulondre's assured and imaginative Hammond organ welds devastating technique to grin-inducing grooviness.
