the Hamilton House open day
twegg Tina Al
Well here we are again and the only subject on our lips is the recent (and trully triumphant) Open Day that landed on 14th June. With the successes and failures of the day still fresh in our minds we breathe a big sigh of relief. The Bristol summer has rolled in offering us a slightly quieter time with all the Artist of the Bristol folk deserting this fair month city, off to the many festivals the UK has to offer.
Whether turning a client’s idea into a visual product or creating my own artwork, I will always try to give it a personal touch, rhythm and a visual edge. Some are close to pixel-perfect, with others it’s more about the big picture and that invisible yet still perceptible line.

If you didn’t manage to make it down to visit us on 14th June stay tuned as we’ll be posting pics on our Facebook page @CoexistCIC There’s also a smashing little teaser video we created which you can find on our website at: www.hamiltonhouse.org/hamilton-house-open-day This months issue is a pretty packed affair with lots to do if you’re sticking around. I’d like to highlight our new weekend Vinyasa Yoga class which is featured in the listings section (pg 10).

There’s also a lovely write-up of the amazing work Community Conscious is doing (pg2), and beautiful artwork by Tina Altwegg on the cover and in the Canteen Listings - Enjoy.

Community Conscious is a not-for-profit project based in the Wellbeing Rooms here at Hamilton House. Our professional team of therapists bring a range of complementary treatments including massage and yoga to the service users, support staff and carers of organisations such as mental health charity Second Step and South Hub day service. Our aim: to improve the health and wellbeing of anyone in need regardless of their background, thus equipping individuals with the tools to integrate more fully within themselves and the broader community. To support this social mission and subsidise sessions for clients for disadvantaged adults in our Community Clinic we also run classes and individual treatments for the staff of local businesses. If you’d like us to offer a bespoke wellbeing service at your workplace, run a class for your clients or bring taster treatments to your carers support group, give us a call. JUly MUSIC @THE
CANTEEN
Two Man Ting - The rich flavours of Sierra Leone conjured up as Jah-Man Aggrey’s voice and djembe weave around the jangling guitar loops of Jon Lewis in Jah-man’s original songs.
Mark Lawrence Trio - Where rock guitar gets clever and jazz guitar gets edgy you’ll
generally find the mighty Mark Lawrence (though, to be fair, he does stinging funk and breezy swing if the mood takes him).
House of Roshi - The mighty Ev Newman steers this live-wire exploration of Latin Soul music, with particularly fine percussion and jazzy instrumental excursions
Chainska Brassica
- Inspired by The Skatallites and Don Drummond exuberant South London ska and reggae collective Chainska Brassika lay down sparkling brass parts over rock solid rhythms in a way that takes it back to the heyday of the Jamaican studio system, while their socially observant songs have a definite Special-ness.
Talisman - It’s carnival! You need more reggae! This lot became legendary in the 80s and they are still true to those roots but they’ve also moved on and the new tunes have a fresh energy that does credit to their veteran status. The Open Secrets - It’s contemporary Americana, y’all, with a campfire whiff of good old-
timey tunes and probably a big ol’ truck waiting to roll down endless highways going west. Easy-rolling country harmonies, light-touch acoustic instrumentals and songs from the heart.
Mon 7
Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house

times there’s a stripped down Dylanesque folksiness.
FREIGHT - Martin Jenkins’ modern jazz piano and composition nod firmly towards the great Thelonious Monk while Greg Cordez’s bass and tunes lean in a contemporary Scandinavian direction.
Thu 10
Here Come The Nightjars - If you put Ska through the Skiffle wringer do you get Skaffle?
Fri 11
Hot `Tin Roofs - Stylish sextet exploring the point where swing met jump blues and rock and roll began to take shape - think Slim Harpo, Ruth Brown and that kind of hipster.
Sat 12
Wormfood presents: Keo & The Movement - Stripped down reggae meets indie-folk aesthetics, dibbling guitar riffs and sweet harmony vocals - all familiar ingredients yet a pleasingly fresh recipe when James Keo and his London-based 5-piece cook it up.
Sun 13
Sarah Jane Scouten - the perfect thing for a Sunday afternoon: a sweet-voiced country songstress with a saddlebag of songs from her trails through the backstreets of Montreal
Mon 14
Hip Hop Jam - Guest MCs and musicians join the rhythm section of the ultra-funky Groove-iST
Tue 15
12 Months of Summer - Monthly showcase of the best acts from the acoustic scene pulled

together by the sparkling Miss Rosina Buck (who is one such herself).
Neil Smith Quartet - Neil Smith is one of those genius musicians who just quietly gets on with being dazzling. Or loudly, maybe, like when he turns up to 11 and cranks it out like Jimmy Page.
FREE ENTRY - BUT PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THE MUSIC BUCKET! LIVE MUSIC MON-THURS 9:30 -11:30PM | FRI & SAT BANDS & DJS FROM 9:30-1:00AM | SUN LIVE MUSIC 4:00-6:00PM Thu 17
Jazz Reggae Sessions - It’s swing meets reggae in the classic 60s and 70s style set up by Tommy McCook, Ernest Ranglin and the original jazz stars of the Kingston studio scene.
Fri 18
People’s String Foundation - Twenty strings - two fiddles, bass and guitar -plus a set of skins. It’s open to a lot of imagination and the PSF don’t lack on that front, making their original folkish-rockish songs range from the epic to the intimate.
Sat 19 Sun 20
Uri Green & The Seeds - Here’s a world of influences gathered under that ever-inclusive
umbrella of Roots Reggae Riddims. Exiled Barcelonian Uri’s soulful Catalan lyrics grace catchy Kingston grooves courtesy of The Seeds,
Leo James - As much a guitarist as a singer/songwriter, Leo James draws on the roots of English and US folk in writing his material before adding impeccable finger-picking and swooping steel guitar and delivering it all in a nicely polished package.
Mon 21
Canteen Jazz Sessions - An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house

rootsiness he’s absolutely the real deal. All the way from Charleston Illinois!
Sefrial - Naming your band from a moody tune by New York art-musician John Zorn is a pretty serious statement of intent, but alto-sax player Sophie Stockham knows exactly what she’s doing with this new sextet. Could that be why she’s drawn in an all-star cast of other Bristol jazz luminaries, all keen to have some of the fun? Classy contemporary music played with flair.
Thu 24
Tantz - Once the familiar tunes of Jewish Klezmer have been through the Tantz treatment
Fri 25
Noya Rao - Here’s a real coolness, all the way from Leeds. Electronicist Tom Henry’s subliminal hip-hop trio - featuring uber-drummer Matt ’Tantz’ Davies - treads a Warpish path between trancy ambience and cinematic grooves. Chilling - but in a good way, naturally.
Sat 26
Troker - Wowsers - are this lot really coming? Just the maddest most brilliant musical thing to come out of Guadalajara since - ever! Like Frank Zappa doing Mariachi, Cumbia, hiphop and jazz all at once, with all the brilliant energy of six fearless musicians who just wanna have fun.
Sun 27
Julia Turner - As an unhappy waitress banished to an Australian cutlery shed Julia Turner wrote her own work song, grabbed her guitar and busked her way out of a dead end job.
Mon 28
Leonie Evans Blues Session - there’s a proper blues belter, Memphis Minnie style, in Leonie Evans heart. Here’s the blues, then, raw and proper, sweet’n’sour.
Tue 29
Colm Grey - A wandering troubadour from Kilkennie, catcheing inspiration from the old traditions and the world around him weaving them into contemporary folk songs that fit his easy-going reflective style.
Wed 30
CCTV Allstars - It’s a potent punch of equal parts ska, punk, reggae, jazz and Latin, shaken vigorously and poured out with eastern European generosity.
Thu 31
you’ll never hear them the same again. The Leeds-based quintet call it ElectroKlezmer.
BBC Introducing: The Woohoo Revue - You know the kind of music that makes
you go ‘woohoo!’ don’t you? Well we sent out for it, all the way to Australia, as it goes, and hear (hah!) it is: balkanelectroswingjazzeroonie for dancing, yes? Is it a school night? Apparently not, so kick off those shoes. It’s all part of BBC Introducing’s ‘Gig Crawl’ night! Design by www.danchernett.com
