Prayers of the People Prayer 1
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People will begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of peace to include the human family and the planet. You are invited to join in prayer and meditation as you close your eyes and imagine yourself held in God’s loving hands. Be aware of your current needs, known to you and the one who calls you by your name. [Pause for 5 seconds.] God of my life, may I receive your love, peace, and healing. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Imagine someone who is close to you being held in God’s loving hands. Perhaps this person is a good friend or someone with whom you are struggling. God of relationships, may this person receive your love, peace, and healing. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Envision all the people of the world, every nation and tribe, every town and village. Imagine those that live in oneness, as well as those ravaged by war and violence. God of all peoples, may these communities receive your love, peace, and healing. ________ [Pause for 20 seconds.] Behold all that God has created. See the beauty of the Earth. Recognize the brokenness and destruction we have caused. Imagine all the beauty and the damage held in God’s loving hands. God of creation, may this planet receive your love, peace, and healing. [Pause for 20 seconds.] May this spirit of peace and compassion for ourselves, others, all people, and the Earth remain alive in us this day. Amen.

Prayer 2
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The context for our Prayers of the People begin with ourselves and move outward, in rippling waves to those we know and love, to strangers and enemies, to the entire world, to all of creation. Will you join with me in this time of prayer and meditation acknowledging your soul’s yearning for God’s presence and peace? Silently join your heart with God’s. [Pause for 5 seconds.] O God of love, grant us your peace. We struggle with insecurities and fears, weighed down with issues that affect our sense of worth and wholeness. Grant us peace that calms the inner turmoil of our souls and affirms that we are beloved. [Pause for 20 seconds.] O God of life, grant us your peace. We strive for relationships that are fair, equitable and filled with compassion, yet we often find ourselves enslaved in conflicts with others, even those we love. Grant us the strength to listen with our hearts first that we may grow in deeper connection with those whom we call friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family. [Pause for 20 seconds.] O God of hope, grant us your peace. We have grown weary of the sounds of war, violence, oppression and diminishment of men, women and children, yet we fail to heed your urgent invitation to act for justice. Grant us the courage to extend our hands in acts of mercy, service, and peacemaking. ________ [Pause for 20 seconds.] O God of all creation, grant us your peace. We understand that we are made of the same substance as all living things, yet fail to grasp your vision of the sacredness of creation. Make us more aware and weave us into oneness. Grant us a glimpse of your love for creation in all its forms and the compassion to act in ways that respect and honor the genius of your universe. [Pause for 20 seconds.] O God of peace, we offer ourselves as vessels of your grace and peace, so that from where we stand, waves of your loving presence will emanate to bless your world. In and through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Prayer 3
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of peace to include the human family and the planet. Allow yourself to come reverently into the presence of the Divine and please join with me in prayer. Transformative encounters await you here with the Eternal Creator and Reconciler. [Pause for 5 seconds.] Creator God, cleanse our hearts. Accept the confession of our flaws and failures, and make us whole. Transform us, O God, into the persons of peace and grace you created us to be. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Redeeming God, bring to our awareness those persons and relationships that are broken, and make us conscious of the need for reconciliation and forgiveness. Transform us for relationships of wholeness once again. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Saving God, allow us to feel your love and concern for your children in communities around the world, far and near. ________ May we weep with your tears and act with compassion to heal those who are suffering. [Pause for 20 seconds.] God of all creation, stir within us a deep connection with everything you have created; make us aware of the sacred nature of all that surrounds us and lead us into deep reverence that cultivates nurturing actions. [Pause for 20 seconds.] May these prayers of concern, compassion, and transformation for ourselves, others, all people, and the Earth lead us into a world shaped by your unconditional love, O God. Amen.

Prayer 4
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People this day begin with ourselves and then, enlarging life’s circle, move outward to include those we know and love, to strangers and enemies, to the entire world, and to all of creation. Will you pause for the next few moments in the quiet of this sanctuary, away from the worries of the world, to silently add your own thoughts and prayers to the prayers of the people? [Pause for 5 seconds.] God of all time and space, I stand waiting for your peace to enter my broken and chaotic soul, just as you wait for me to pause long enough to breathe and simply be. May your peace fill the space that I now create with my breath and my being. Hear my often-impatient cry, “Be with me, O Prince of Peace, and make me whole.” [Pause for 20 seconds.] Source of our being, we stand waiting for your peace to enter our broken and chaotic relationships, just as you wait for us to pause long enough to invite you in. May your reconciling presence bring us to a point of apology and forgiveness, of offering and receiving, and unity. Hear our impatient cry, “Be with us, O Prince of Peace, and make us one.” [Pause for 20 seconds.] Lord of all Earth’s people, the world stands waiting for your peace to calm the warring nations, to stem the tide of violence we inflict against one another, just as you wait for us to stop the madness long enough to see one another as family. ________ May your profound compassion for your children flow within us. Enable us to surrender our hatred and fear and be filled instead with your loving kindness and mercy. Hear our often-impatient cry, “Be with our human family, O Prince of Peace, and make us one.” [Pause for 20 seconds.] Creator of all, your creation stands waiting for your healing touch to restore all living things to oneness and wholeness, just as you wait for us to revere what you have given us as a sacred gift. May your generous offering of water, earth, air, and all that has life remind us of our physical and spiritual connection with everything that was, is, and will be. Help us honor our call as stewards of the Earth. Hear our impatient cry, “Be with our Earth, O Prince of Peace. Make all things one.” [Pause for 20 seconds.] We ask for this blessing of your peace in and through Jesus Christ. Amen.
19
Prayer 5
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of peace to include the human family and, ultimately, the planet. Jesus Christ, the light of the world, invites you into his presence and his peace. Please allow yourself to breathe deeply and envision yourself in his all-embracing light as we share the prayers of the people. [Pause for 5 seconds.] Radiant God, we come into your presence grateful for the light you have brought into the world; breathe your spirit into our very beings. May your love shine from within us as evidence that you continue to bless your creation with possibility and peace. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Illuminating One, as we experience that light within us, help us radiate your love and light to those around us. May our friends, families, coworkers, and neighbors become aware of your light that emanates from within them as well, redeeming brokenness and creating peace. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Light of the world, extend ever-increasing brightness within this circle of self and friends to those who live all around the world. ________ In places of darkness and hopelessness, may rays of your saving light break through and provide the way to hope and peace. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Holy One, who created darkness and light, bless all your creation with the energy your light produces. Continue to sustain all forms of life—seen and unseen, for the welfare of your beloved creation. May the entire Earth be at peace. [Pause for 20 seconds.] May the One who spoke light into darkness and substance out of the void hear our prayers. May the circle of light in which we live be enlarged to encompass all that was, and is, and is to be. Amen.
20
Prayer 6
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People this day begin with ourselves and then, enlarging life’s circle, move outward to include those we know and love, to strangers and enemies, to the entire world, and to all of creation. Please join with me in today’s prayer and meditation; quiet your breathing and embrace God’s eternal grace as you become aware of your own responses to the guided prayers of the people. [Pause for 5 seconds.] God, you are the still point of the circle within which all creation is found. I yearn to connect with your spirit of peace and experience the companionship of your presence in this moment. May I abide in the center of creation’s circle with you? [Pause for 20 seconds.] Creator of horizons, help us draw the circle wider to include those I know and love, and even those I struggle to understand and accept. Fill this circle with the gifts of forgiveness, mercy, compassion, and peace. Give us the desire to include all whose paths cross ours into a place where acceptance is offered freely. Draw our circle wider. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Giver of dreams, let the peace we’ve dreamed of expand to embrace all your children. ________ Within this circle may we see the other as brother and sister, and act as mutual stewards of one another. You call us to live without borders that exclude. Help us to draw the circle wider still. [Pause for 20 seconds.] God of all living things, your world longs to be whole and in harmony. The dream of shalom includes caregiving for the water, earth, air and all that has life in one great family. You created us with interdependencies. Give us mutual respect and tender care for all. Let this be our song: Nothing on your created Earth stands alone, but lives in shalom with all other living things. Draw the circle wide open. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Architect of life and peace, may we be blessed by your vision of shalom this day. May our minds, hearts, and spirits be wide enough for all to find a home. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, God’s shalom. Amen.
21
Prayer 7
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of peace to include the human family and the planet.
Within all aspects of our lives and our world exist situations and conditions that need the healing touch of the Holy. Will you join with me to listen to the voice that speaks peace to each of us from beyond the farthest hills, from the infinite heavens above, and the vast seas below? [Pause for 5 seconds.] Listen to the voice that invites you to surrender your fears and frustrations, anger, and anxieties, and to await with an open heart the peace that only Christ can bring. Allow the one who seeks only the best for you to offer the comfort you seek. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Listen to the voice that whispers the invitation to reconciliation with those whose lives, words, decisions, or actions have wounded you. May you find space in your heart for healing to occur in your relationships with brothers and sisters, as well as your enemies. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Listen to the voice that calls all into unity and oneness. ________ May we be attuned to hear the cries for mercy, forgiveness and generosity. Listen to the one who reminds us that in the welfare of another resides our own well-being. [Pause for 20 seconds.] Listen to the voice that echoes across the eons of time and yet speaks anew in this moment. The Earth shudders in distress because creation’s natural and living systems are becoming exhausted from carrying the burden of our greed and conflicts. Listen to creation which struggles to provide life to the seas, the hills, and the heavens above. [Pause for 20 seconds.] May the one who spoke calm to the storm and stilled the waves with a word, bring peace to us and through us. May we be among those whose lives whisper, shout, and proclaim peace to those far and near for the sake of God’s shalom. Amen.
22
Prayer 8
As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People this day begin with ourselves and move outward, in rippling waves to those we know and love, to strangers and enemies, to the entire world, to all of creation. We begin by noticing our breathing. We breathe in spirit and exhale those things that separate us from you, O God. Breathe in. Breathe out. Please enter into the silence with me as we pray for peace remembering God’s promise to be with us and to work in us. Listen for the sound of the beloved’s voice. [Pause for 5 seconds.] God of creation, in the beginning your breath moved over the waters and brought calm and peace to a chaotic world. Breathe into my being this day; bring respite to my frenzied soul. Refresh my frayed sense of self and bring alive my hope for peace through words and actions inspired by your spirit. Breathe on me, breath of God. [Pause for 20 seconds.] God of reconciliation, 2,000 years ago you breathed and the word became flesh among us, teaching us the way of forgiveness, mercy, compassion and peace. Breathe into our relationships this day; allow us to enflesh the teachings of your Son within our family, friends, neighbors, and even our encounters with those we do not yet know. Breathe on us, breath of God. [Pause for 20 seconds.] God of sacred community, your Holy Spirit seeks to blow through the discord, disruption, and disease of the world to bring healing and wholeness once again. ________ Remind us that many of your children lack the basic needs of life, including freedom, space to grow, and love to support them. Breathe on your people, breath of God. [Pause for 20 seconds.] God of all, your planet is gasping for breath, heaving under the pressure and weight of unbridled consumption of resources and greed-driven destruction of your world. The Earth groans from forces of chaos that destroy what we have been given as a gift for all creation. Awaken us to our responsibilities to heal and bring peace to our earthly home. Breathe once again over the waters, skies, land, and all that inhabit them, breath of God. [Pause for 20 seconds.] May the awareness of our own breathing connect us to you, O God, and to all that lives because you create it, love it, and call it good. In and through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Prayers for Peace Molly Bagley Gracious God and precious friend, He who know our needs and grants your presence before it is sought, be with us now as we lift our hearts to you in prayer. May we turn our thoughts from worldly distractions and focus only on divine love and grace. Soothe our wounds with bandages of holiness and allow our words and actions to be strengthened by your love. May we receive your freely given grace and love in all humility and understand the depth of this precious gift. God, grant us your peace in our innermost soul. Give us release from the guilt of our errors so that we might see the fruits of your blessings in our lives. We know it is your greatest desire to bestow your loving kindness on our lives, and we thank you for this gift of grace. Purge our hearts of selfish desire so that we might ever turn our will to you alone. May you find us as attentive to your revelation as you are to us always. As we go forward from this sacred place, may we carry your peace and love with us to all the corners of the world. In Jesus’s most precious name we pray. Amen.
Kathy Fallon We know, God, that no person in this life may reach the point At which they may be excused from outward service. Let us take you with us in all places, for all places are yours— Place us in the streets or in the world, in the desert or in a cell. Help us be a righteous people wherever in the world we are, For your presence is our peace. We take you with us, wherever we go. We seek to share your peace with whomever you send to us. Let our hearts, our hands and our minds be open to your mission. Your presence is our peace.
Brittany Mangelson Loving God, we come humbly to you united in prayer. As your children, we recognize your Spirit dancing in and through us and ask that we might continue to rest in that awareness. Today, God, we pray for peace, and we pray our hearts will be filled with boundless mercy for all creation. God, we know there is much brokenness in this world and understand we can be your hands and feet in restorative, divine justice. Though we speak many languages and come from many lands, our mission is the same. Grant us, oh God, the

sensitivity to discern where your love is needed most and help us find the courage to respond to the Spirit’s pulse in our lives and in our communities. Let us continue the way, carrying a constant prayer of personal mindfulness and outreaching grace. We know peace among your people requires us to live in harmony with the diversity all around us. We your children must be open to new experiences that bridge the gaps between cultures and communities. Help us lead with love to be instruments of your peace in a fractured world. Help us make sense of the chaos. Help us find stillness in the noise. Be with us as we live out our discipleship, ministering your light to those in darkness. Help us be one. Help us see that we are engulfed in your love always. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
Sue Robb God who made us, God who loves us, God who keeps us, place your peace and love in our hearts and let it touch all who enter our lives. Let it spread through us into our churches, our communities, our world, and throughout creation! Let your peace fill the hearts of those who hate, those who tear down, and those who destroy the beautiful world you created and the people in it. Fill them—and us—with sincere contrition for our sinfulness, compassion for one another, and a longing for you, Jesus. We come to you weak and wounded, but in our weakness, you are our strength; in our despair, you are our hope; in our sadness, you are our unfailing joy. As we go forth into this day fortified by the peace and love you give through your mercy and grace, we know with all our being that “all shall be well.” Through Christ, present with us and with all the saints, we pray. Amen.
Marvin Rice O God, our creator, whose Spirit moved upon the face of that creation and declared all things as good; O God, our sustainer, whose Spirit moves among all the people of the Earth, “And art preserving us from day to day by lending us breath,” we humbly approach your throne at this moment to petition you. May that same creating, sustaining Spirit grant us your peace. Let the peace of your Spirit reside in the hearts of people until there is no room for fear or hatred or doubt. Let the peace of your Spirit reside in our homes until loving partners, parents and children, brothers and sisters are filled with the desire to live in harmony and to uphold the worth of each family member. Let the peace of your Spirit live within us so that we might become ambassadors of your peace throughout all the world.

And let the peace of your Spirit always be abundant in this sanctuary. May it touch the lives and hearts of all who enter here. And may they leave with the sure knowledge that you are in this place. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Jeni Mullins Dear heavenly parent, During tumultuous times we all become acutely aware of how often we forget to turn to you. Yet because you love us, you hear us. You listen to our agony; you hear our pain; you celebrate our victories and our joys. We forget to seek you in good times, even as we quickly seek you in bad times. We cannot be called Christians if we forget Christ’s example. He loved who society said was unlovable; he empathized with who leaders said should be ignored; stood up for who the world said should be stood on. We know that true peace can only be achieved where justice reigns, and we ask you for this today. Justice for those oppressed, maligned, marginalized, dismissed, murdered, and forgotten. Help us be bringers of justice and harbingers of peace. Go before us and prepare the way for what some would say is unthinkable. Let our faith be the mustard seed needed to move the mountain of injustice and unrest to reveal a valley of peace and prosperity. We thank you for your presence and ask these things in your son’s name. Amen.
Lu Mountenay Creator God, here is a question I ask of you... When two paths cross and neither will yield, what can we do? When things aren’t fair, and people don’t share, what can we do? When choices are hard and peace can’t be found, what can we do? Creator God, here is a blessing I ask of you... Show us a third, and better path that is good for us all. Help us speak up for those who depend on us, as we depend on you. Cause us to remember the choice Christ made for us...for life...for peace. With your Spirit to empower us Lord, we will act in your stead; we will remember you. Amen.
Kathy McAdam May peace lap at the edges of our restless minds as the tide laps at the shore. The peace of God will surround us gently and slowly. It will flood our souls and calm our ripples of restlessness. In quiet moments when our problems and fear creep in and invade our calm, may we let the rolling waves of God’s loving Spirit wash away our fears. 26
May our problems be carried on the crest of our creator’s Spirit. May we be refreshed and renewed by the surging waters of love that wash over us. God of the seas and the waves, give us peace. Amen.
Joseph W. Lewis Almighty and sovereign creator—Lord of the universe and all living creatures, As we contemplate the wonders of the universe, the vastness of space, and the galaxies upon galaxies— waiting to be discovered, we see within the cosmos your order and your peace. We stand in awe and are breathless as we consider your majesty and creative genius. Words are inadequate to praise you, our lips tremble as we feebly try to express the adoration within our hearts and minds. We echo with the psalmist, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” Our knowledge is that you love humanity and are concerned for us. We know that humankind is a part of your great works when they are at peace and harmony with one another and the environment. We raise our voice with all those throughout the world who deeply desire to be at one with you. With the prophets and seers of today as well as the ancients, let the desire for peace grow and multiply in the minds of governments, in the hearts of all people, in the desert places, in the mountains, in the crowded cities and upon the oceans and seas. Amen.
Klaas Kaat Our creator God, We praise your name and stand in awe of what you have done. Astronauts have marveled at the beauty of the Earth—our home in your universe—and became silent as reverence and peace stirred their souls. In juxtaposition they became aware—as we are today—of the arbitrary borders and divisions between people; the lust for power, the naked aggression. God, we plead this day that the hearts of all people might be softened, that distrust and hatred might melt away and that your healing Spirit will supplant the self-serving intolerance and desperate dogmatic views of many. Yea, that the love and peace emanating from you might awaken all of us to our interconnectedness and to the nurturing of unifying, wholesome relationships. In the name of our Lord of peace, Jesus the Christ. Amen.
L. Dean Carper Almighty God, 27
We acknowledge your supreme power over all nations. Help us to recognize your love for all people. May we strive to be instruments in your hands to be a part of the peace-building process. Where hate and fear divide, the nations may tenderness and hope unite. May your love heal the physical and emotional scars of this strife-torn world. Remove the shroud that limits our vision of your eternal purpose and the building of your kingdom. Remove from us the blinders that keep us from seeing others as you see them. With hope, faith, and courage, may we always strive to replace scorn and bigotry with truthfulness and righteousness. Deliver every nation from the grip of the tyranny of war and poverty. We look forward to the day when these plagues will be no more, and the nations shall beat swords into plowshares. Grant us your peace and let it begin with us. Amen.
Mylord C. Musuku O Lord Jesus Christ, precious son of God; I bow my head before you as your love transcends your holiness in my heart. I hear your voice, my face is searching for you. I am thirsty for you my Lord; I am thirsty for your peace. O Lord you said you’ll give me the living water. I want to find you. Where are you, my Lord? O Lord you said, “I came to save that which was lost.” What was lost? I want to find you; my heart seeks you, O Lord. What is your will for me? Holy spirit direct me, guide me, and teach me in Jesus’s name. Amen.
Norman W. Roy Our heavenly creator, Hear our words of anguish and our cry for peace; peace in our homes, our communities, and throughout the world. Reach out, eternal God, with your love and compassion and bring the understanding our leaders need to stay on the course toward world peace. Soften their hearts so they may feel compassion toward all humankind. May their leadership be tempered with love and understanding, so that each person may live in peace and 28
harmony. May there truly be peace on earth, and goodwill to all. Amen.
Ray Hogue O Lord, let us sense peace in the beauty of our worship. Let us speak peace in our interpersonal relationships. Let us hear peace amid confusion. Let us feel peace when your Holy Spirit touches us. Let us hope for peace in the seas of hopelessness. Let us sue for peace in the humane treatment of our little ones. Let us respect peace in the wise lives of our elders. Let us affirm peace as we accept the struggles of our youth. Let us honor peace by being ethical persons in all walks of life. Lord, let us follow peace to whatever person, situation, or cross it leads us. In the name of Jesus Christ, the prince of peace, we pray. Amen.
Sheryl Holstein Dear God, We confess to times of insensitivity, ignorance, judgment, indifference, hatred, and greed. Help us tear down the walls that separate us from one another. Lord, let us see you in the faces of our brothers and sisters. Let us hear the cries of the frightened. Living on every continent are those who are oppressed, hungry, and heavily burdened. As we merge in your love, help us unfold the red bud of passion as we become a people of compassion. Let us keep the lamp of life burning. Free us from our own limitations that we might free others. Renew in us your Spirit, that we might be faithful to one another in your love. Together we can build your community, in our hearts, with our minds, words, and deeds. May our hands join, our minds unite, and our hearts beat as one. This is our prayer of peace. We lay it at your feet that it might be acceptable, and we all might be healed in your love. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Renald Eden Dear heavenly parent, 29
We come praising your name. We thank you for your grace and love that gives us your peace and comfort. We ask for forgiveness of our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. We come to you today to ask for peace in our families, whether they be individual families, church families, national families, or world families. We need your help to learn to love and accept one another. We ask your help in knowing and loving you as you would accept us so we might receive your peace. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
Dan Gregory Our God and walker of the way, How we long to follow in your path. We want to be known among our friends and in our communities as the people of peace. We want to reflect the light that comes into our lives wherever we find ourselves looking into your face. Your Spirit quickens within us—let us hear! Your peace brings comfort—let us breathe! Your vision draws us beyond the horizon—let us walk! Lift our eyes to the vision of what must be, not just what might be. Remind us we do not walk the way alone but are strengthened as we draw close to you and one another. When we falter, forgive us. When our hearts harden, break them open. When we encounter weary spirits, may we extend the invitation to come and see the One who revives us and brings us peace. For we yearn to walk in the way that leads to the dream of shalom. Comfort our fears. Strengthen our resolve. Surprise us along the way. Open us to new understandings and dimensions of your grace. Soften our hearts that we might see you and walk with you and live peacefully and passionately, following in the footsteps of the Living Christ. We pray for peace in the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
William Rounds Eternal God, your act of creation brought peaceful order out of chaos. We ask for your multiplying blessings upon our efforts as peacemakers. 30
We long for a peaceful world; a world of justice and mercy; a world of forgiveness and love. Remind us that such a world must begin in our hearts and minds; must spread through our families and then through an everwidening circle of friends, neighbors, communities, and nations. Forgive our unpeaceful acts of self-centeredness and greed. Challenge us to try again to be more peaceful in all our relationships. Grant us in our hearts that peace that passes understanding and bless us in our desire to share that peace with our neighbors throughout this day. This is our prayer in the name of the one who stilled the wind and waves with a word, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Pam Robison This is a difficult time, God—a time of pain and fear, a time of uncertainty and chaos. We do not know what the future holds. The plans we had made have all been upended and we do not know where to go or what to do. We have lost loved ones without the option of saying goodbye. We have lost jobs...homes...friends. We have nowhere to turn—so we turn to you, asking, pleading for your peace. Calm our souls. Give us hope for the future. This we pray. Amen.
Pam Robison Creating presence, We are weary. Weary of hatred and division. Weary of destruction. Weary of violence that tears at the heart and soul. We are sick and in pain. We ache at the destruction of this world you gave us and called us to be stewards over. Our tears flow when we see families lost in the rubble of their homes...when they feel they have no choice but to try to flee to a safer place, even though the journey is dangerous. And yet—despite all this—we still often harden our hearts...unable to see our kinship. We turn our backs— and so nothing changes. 31
Give us new hearts, divine One—hearts of flesh to replace our hearts of stone. Give us a new spirit—a spirit of compassion and willingness to change. Only then will we—and the whole world—be healed and find the peace we are so desperately searching for. Only then can we live. This we pray. Amen.
Karen Anne Smith Our Gracious Creator, Forgive us our human frailty. Cleanse us of all resentment that we may truly become your children. We love your creation and claim all people as family. Our hearts ache to relieve the suffering in our world, to bring the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to the bruised and broken-hearted. But as much as we love each person, we know that you love them more. Your love is pure, unfathomable, and unfailing. Increase our love, dear friend, to include all who are snared by the darkness of hate. These are also your children and part of our family. Fill our hearts with compassion that overcomes anger. Please teach us how to listen to your direction so that we might become instruments of peace, children of God. In the name of Jesus, the Living Christ, we pray. Amen.
Alice Hughes Heavenly creator of all life, teach us your boundless love. Move our hearts to understand the worth of all your creation and to feel the pain of creation’s suffering. Open our eyes that we might see our part in improving our imperfect world. Illumine our minds to what you would have us do to make life better for all. Use our hands to put into action your vision of shalom in which every living creature knows love, security, peace, and a heavenly presence in their lives. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Barbara L. Beal O Lord of all creation, We meet you in this sacred time to express the yearning in our hearts for peace. Enfold each of us with your mantel of great inner calm as we live in an age of confusion. Show us the real and lasting truths of your peace that we may share with others. 32
There is a great concern that all might be treated with humanity, as individuals, as equals. Grant that we might choose the best paths to alleviate this suffering. May we seek out and acknowledge the Divine in every creature of your world. Give us the discerning wisdom to leave open areas in our hearts for our differences. Teach us tolerance. Help us always to uphold the image of Jesus Christ, your son, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Danny A. Belrose Whirling, swirling skyward —here, in this sacred space we sense your Spirit, God, —not because the other places where we walk, talk, and live out our daily lives are less sacred. Every sanctuary large or small, humble or ornate —every living room, field, forest, mountain stream dedicated to your praise and peace awakens us to your presence. We come expectant. We come in search of you, of ourselves, of those we know and do not know who need to be blessed and to be your blessing. How many feet have journeyed this Worshiper’s Path, God? How many faces, races, friends, families, stranger? Heads bowed in silence. Hearts filled with hope and anticipation. Upward. Inward. Slowly, reflectively, winding their way into spiraling space. Bringing you here, meeting you here —taking you with them, God. Opening themselves, once again, to your ever-abiding presence at all corners of life. 33
And somehow awakening to the wonder that they too are your temple —each a living, loving sanctuary of peace, reconciliation, and healing of the Spirit. May this shining symbol escape its footings and foundation. May it wander far and wide in crepe soles, sandals, high heels, bare feet, and sneakers —its walls wrapped in suits, saris, Shirts, and sundresses. Let its face be a rainbow of cultures, young and old, weak and strong —each a living sanctuary of Christ’s peace. And may those who never enter its doors, become its doors, welcoming all they meet with the gift of grace and holy acceptance. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Cathi Cackler-Veazey We come to you today in the spirit of humility to recognize your great power in each life, in the communities and corporations of human design, in the governments of the nations, and in everything on this terrestrial ball. We seek harmony in a world of chaos. We seek peace where separation reigns. For we know that when people live in an awareness of the connectedness of everything through your Spirit, peace is the natural result. This prayer is for peace. Not the peace that is only resident in signatures on pieces of paper. We know there have been tens of thousands of such treaties between nations through time. This is a prayer for the peace, which lives in the hearts of people. Living prayer expresses a deeper, more lasting commitment. It is a prayer founded on a love that transcends differences. It brings those from many cultures and religions together. The language of the world religions speaks that unity. A oneness binds us in the mutual wish for peace. As a Christian would say, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” As a Buddhist would say, “When righteousness is practiced to win peace, he who so walks shall gain the victory and all fetters utterly destroy.” As a Jew would say, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace.” As a Hindu would say, “The noble-minded dedicate themselves to promoting peace and the happiness of others, even those who injure them.” God of all nations, though we look at you through separate eyes, let us see the truth you share with each of us. Call us to accountability as peacemakers. Strengthen us for the journey toward harmony. Bless us with the vision of possibility. Amen. 34
Evalina L. Gustin Our God, Almighty God over all creation: We come to rejoice with you and to praise you. We come to learn to know you and the ways Jesus taught us that our lives would reflect the example he gave us through you. He has said in many ways, “If anyone will hear my voice and open unto me, I will be with them, sup with them, and help them find the ways of peace.” O Lord, this could be such an amazing, beautiful Earth to live in if we would all answer your call—and come to you with our whole hearts turned to the divine food you wish to serve us. We do have desires in our hearts to find and share this path you made for us 2,000 years ago. We seek to walk with you in paths of love, hope, and peace as the Holy Spirit counsels and quickens thought and action. Please guide and strengthen us with the courage to reach out to the lives of others to assist them as they struggle to find your peace in this world. Lord, we wait upon you with patience; we watch to be alert; we respond to the needs of others to help bring more joy and your love into their lives. Be with them. Be with us. We ask all in Jesus’s name and to your glory. Amen.
Laura Herdman Almighty God, we see your power in designing the galaxies, the oceans, and the sands; and we behold your gentleness in the butterfly, the firefly, the violet. How can we not stand in awe before the grandeur displayed on Earth? Help us now reflect on the times when peace entered our souls as we stood still, listened, and beheld the beauty surrounding us. We thank you for expressions of peace from others through their insight of your splendor: the artists, musicians, architects, poets. We witness the good feeling we have each time we create or work at making something a little better than it was. We feel a kinship with you, and peace enters our soul. Help us create opportunities to take the touch of Jesus to others to sense his peace. We ask forgiveness of moments when we have not acted on his behalf. Forgive our reluctance, our apathy, our daily busyness that hinders our sensitivity to others’ needs. You give us opportunities to be peacemakers, but we do not always see, hear, or do. Today we pledge our efforts anew. We pledge to take the peace from the beauty surrounding us in the arts and nature and give it human expression in our relationships. Somehow, we feel that as we do so, we carry out the purpose for our being. Give us your blessing this day, and receive our petition simply because our master urges us to pray. Amen.

Gracious God and precious friend, Extend your peace throughout creation in flowing ribbons of love. Let all who seek you know your presence and be moved to greater acts of peace in their communities. May they know your infinite tenderness and intimate friendship as they seek greater knowledge of you. Bring your presence to those struggling with loneliness and uncertainty, that they may understand your desire for their companionship and reach out to you in love. Be with those who feel weak and useless, that they would find strength in their trials and the confidence to share this strength with others. Above all, we pray that your peace, love, and grace would impress upon our hearts the desire to live in service to you. As we go forward from this sacred place, may we carry your peace and love with us to all the corners of the world. In Jesus’s most precious name, we pray. Amen.
Ruth Shotwell Heavenly parent, Peace is the final frontier. The call is clear. We are to engender peace throughout the world. We have been sleeping. We forgot how awesomely strong our connection is to you. Our minds and bodies forgot how incredibly powerful our spirits are. We are called to be the light in the world. Let your light so shine within us that we glow with your Holy Spirit and power. We lift up to you our sadness for our lack of spiritual depth. Meet us where we are at and help us to stand strong for you. I pray that your spirit of peace, hope, love, and joy will be made flesh in the world. Let there be peace. Help us be free of the yoke of war. Use us to bring the light. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
Diana Hansen Creator of the Earth and all life, show us your peace. It is your peace we seek. Point us to examples of those who can teach us your peace. Give us wisdom to live out your peace in everyday situations. Your peace is a calming breeze and a forceful gale; a smooth lake and fast-crashing rapids; people laughing and marchers protesting. Grant us courage to learn the principles of your peace so that all our actions—the gentle and forceful—are unified in their hope and focus on the world as you wish it to become. Creator of the Earth and all life, show us your peace that we may more fully become what we seek. Amen.

Shirley Valier Remmenga Lord of life, our creator, We praise you with thanksgiving, for you are peace. Your peace is all around us, present in all your creation. We look at the fluttering butterfly amid the flowers, and we see peace. We listen to the song of the meadowlark, and we hear peace. We cup a fragrant rose in our hands, and we smell peace. We bite into a vine-ripened tomato, and we taste peace. We hold a baby in our arms, lay our cheek on that soft, sweet cheek, and we feel peace. All our senses experience peace, and they tell us that you are peace. We would know your peace, O Lord, not only with our senses but with our minds and our hearts and our souls. With this knowing may we express your peace, promote your peace, embody your peace, be your peace in our world that needs your peace so desperately. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
