A message from the Mayor… “I am honoured to have been asked to write a few words to introduce this years Black History Month booklet of events. The diverse programme captures the essence of Black History Month where we acknowledge the rich contribution made by members of the Black African Caribbean communities here in Bristol past, present and future. It’s an opportunity for everyone regardless of who you are to get involved and help shape the future of our city. I’m excited at the prospect of an interactive resource as we work in partnership with Cognitive Paths to provide year round information on community interests.”

Black History Month (BHM) is an annual commemoration throughout October that acknowledges the importance of African and African-Caribbean culture and history, using a number of events, such as dance, music, film, theatre, talks, workshops and much more, designed for all age groups. BHM has been celebrated widely around the world since the 1920’s. In Bristol, the month of October is about bringing together the many different ethnicities that make up this multicultural city to display their Heritage using a variety of platforms such as films and exhibitions. 121 Creatives and Cognitive Paths will now design, produce and print the Black History Month programme twice a year, this will be in October and April. Our aim is to increase the positive contribution of Bristol’s diverse communities and provide information of activities around them with an opportunity to increasing BAME participation. The publication will highlight the Heritage of the Caribbean, African and the diaspora communities. It will now have an online presence with links to social media networks. The project will have a continued focus on monitoring equality, diversity and inclusion in all sectors of Bristol.

Closing the Gap: Action on inequalities in Bristol

In Bristol 23% of our children still live in poverty. Unemployment, zero hours contracts, homelessness and high housing costs are making people’s lives a misery. The film The Divide tells the story of seven individuals striving for a better life in the USA and UK, where the top 0.1 per cent owns as much wealth as the bottom 90 per cent. The film highlights the toxic effects on divided communities, where both the rich and poor struggle to live happy fulfilled lives. The Divide creates a picture of how economic division creates social division. It serves as both a call to arms, and a powerful warning that unequal societies are bad for all of us.
