From the Executive Director By Carl Metler

September 2002

I want to announce the appointment of Steve Smith, currently AAD-Connecticut, as the new North East Area Director. Steve replaces Mike Aldea, who has asked to be replaced as his personal situation recently makes it impossible for him to continue to fulfill the duties of the AD. Mike stepped up late last year to help COG out, again, as he has so many times in the past. Thank you Mike, and we'll be seeing you on down the road. Steve will take over immediately and serve the remainder of the term, until end of 2003. Please welcome him and offer him your assistance.

Northeast Area News

From the Area Director By Steve Smith Hello all. I would first like to give thanks to Mike Aldea for all that he has given to COG over the years. He has always been there when COG needed support and I know he will be back when the time is right. I am looking forward to working with the NE staff as we have a dedicated group of AADs. We also have a very strong and active membership and we rely on you and the leadership of the AADs to be able to put on as many fine events and rides as we do here in the NE Area. All of us can get involved to make and take an active role. Get in touch with your AAD or me if you have an idea for a ride, BBQ, weekend event, or anything else. If there is no local AAD or rides happening in your neck of the woods, Hmmmm, this may be an opportunity for you. There has become more of a focus for the COG regional newsletters to bring you more information about the “. . .it is very important for happenings in your area. I hope the fresh look of the newsletter is just the beginning. In an effort to bring you you to keep your contact newsletters with more content we’re looking at methods information current. . .” to reduce the time it takes to push a newsletter through the whole publish & mail process, as well as keeping costs down. Other Area Directors have already gone to electronic newsletter distribution via email notification and web download. I propose to implement the same here in the Northeast Area starting with the next issue. To do this I will need a little help from you. By the time you are reading this I will have sent an email notification to everyone with an email address on file. If you did not get it, it means we do not have an accurate email address for you (or maybe you just don’t have email). If the latter is the case, we need to hear from you. In the event you move or change a phone number or email address, it is very important for you to keep your membership information current. Be sure to send a written change of information to me, your local AAD, or Executive Director Carl Metler so that we can keep our files up to date. We would hate for you to miss out on some of the great stuff that will be coming up. Carl’s email is cmetler@prodigy. net and my contact information, along with that of the COG Northeast leadership staff is listed in each newsletter and Concourier. Our NECOG leadership team wants to serve our membership well. Our goal is to plan events that our members want and will attend. It will help us in planning for the next years if you would take a few minutes to complete the included survey. You may submit the survey using email OR complete the hard copy and send it to me by old fashion U.S. Mail. Please respond by October 30. My goal

is to compile and share the results with you and our leadership team by the end of November. You will find mailing and email instructions on the bottom of the survey.

Blue Ridge Parkway, Deal’s Gap, and Cherohola Skyway are some of the big name riding attractions in this region.

Early in August the Connecticut area saw another almost annual Connecticut Connection Summer Ride, once again hosted by David and Jill Dutton. I received very favorable reports Guy Young addresses the COG National Banquet about his from those who were in attendance. “Over the Pond” Adventure If the ride and Dutton hospitality were anything like in the past, I know I missed a The Northeast Area Spring Fling 2002 rally was May 17-19, and a heck of an event. Way to go Dave & Jill! I just found out that David full story and selected pictures should be in the next Concourier you had an encounter of the cage kind on his way home from work the receive. If you are impatient, the story and all the pictures are on the week after the ride. We are all thankful he is all right, and I would web: www.concours.org/ne/conn-cog/springfling. In June, Mike like to send along my best wishes for a speedy recovery. Flynn hosted the first of his Surprise Rides. About half a dozen folks met at Marcus Dairy in Danbury, CT to head out for a day ride I promised the SE guys I would give a plug for the Run With the with Mike. If you missed it, don’t Wolf Rally coming up Sept. 6-8 at T-W-O Campground in Suches, fret as Mike has another Surprise GA. Check out the Mid-Atlantic Report for more information. I’ve Ride coming up in September. I hope been told that quite a few NE guys go down for that event. Info is at to make it and see some of you there. http://www.concours.org/se/RWTWintro.htm I want to make this newsletter reflective of all the wonderful and unique individuals that comprise the NE Area. With the introduction of electronic distribution, the cost savings will allow us to make the newsletter bigger and better. This is an open invitation to the entire NE Area to submit your ride reports, area happening, favorite rides, or just a good story or anecdote. Photos are OK too— please do not embed them into your document, and be sure to provide a caption for each one. Digital and scanned photos work best. Sending your submission by email is good also, as it saves our fingers from undue exertion. Regular mail is also acceptable, as long as the submission is legible.

From what I hear the national was awesome, and I look forward to reading some of your accounts of this COG flagship event. For those of you who have not yet heard, the 2003 national will be held in Asheville, NC in mid-June. Early information is posted on the COG web site. Over the last few years I spent a combined 10+ days of riding in that area and have to say it is absolutely beautiful, with some fantastic roads and scenery. The

Two upcoming events are featured in this issue— Fall Foliage Rally and Chunk yer Punkins. The end of the riding season (for most of us in the NE) is nearing an end and you know what that means. Time to begin thinking about COG events for the winter and next year. Send me your ideas. Ride Safe. Steve

Mid-Atlantic Report by Clyde Watson Folks, I'm sure a lot of you have noticed that I've been MIA since about May and I apologize sincerely for my lack of attention to all things COG. Since May, my schedule has been a mess (new job, 5 week cross country dual sport ride - Concourier article(s) in the works, son's college graduation, daughter in-law's college graduation, son's out of state wedding, union strike at place of employment, daughter's move back to college ), but I am now seeing light at the end of the tunnel and hope to spend some much needed time on Mid-Atlantic Area COG stuff. To get started, below are updates and additional details on the next three Mid-Atlantic Area COG rides, all of which I hope to attend. As always, if you have any questions, please email me or give me a call at 804-675-0513. Thanks. September 5,6,7,8 - Suches, GA - COG Run With The Wolf Rally - This is one of my favorite rides of the year and is the third or fourth time a Mid-Atlantic Area group will gather for the ride to the SE Area's annual RWTW rally in Suches, GA. Plans are to meet at the gas station (Chevron, I think) at the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Rt. 250 near Waynesboro, VA on Thursday September 5. We will meet at 8:00 am sharp and ride south down the Parkway (at least some of the way) to Cruso, NC where we will spend Thursday night at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground. It is located on NC Page 2

Rt. 276, 8 miles west of the BRP exit at milepost 411.9. Reservations are not necessary for a tent site but they do have cabins available by calling ahead at 828-235-8350. Friday morning, after breakfast at the campground, we'll take the scenic route through the Smokey Mountains to the Two Wheels Only Motorcycle Resort (www. twowheelsonly.com) in Suches, GA. In addition to camp sites, TWO has some rooms in their lodge or trailers that may or may not be available at this late date. Information about room availability and reservations, as well as the RWTW rally, can be obtained on their web site. Friday night and Saturday, we'll enjoy the best motorcycling has to offer; good food, great company, lots of motorcycles and the best motocycle roads in the country period. If you only do one bike trip a year, this is the one to make. We'll leave TWO on Sunday, but discussions are still ongoing about whether we'll make the long trec home in one day or spread it out over two. I'm leaning towards two days personally. October 18,19,20 - Fall Foliage Ride - Luray, VA. - Pat and Sharry Sprague will host a weekend camp and ride at their home in Luray, VA. Plans are to leave from the Sprague's house Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m. and head out for Franklin, W V. We'll grab lunch at the Star Hotel & Restaurant on Rt. 220 right in Franklin before (Mid-Atlantic Report - Continued on page 3) NORTHEAST AREA NEWS

(Mid-Atlantic Report— Continued from page 2)

heading back to Pat and Sharry's for a chili and fixin's supper Saturday night. Round trip will be approximately 235 miles. Camping at the Sprague's infamous OWO Campground & Luxury Resort Emporium is available Friday and Saturday nights, and a continental breakfast will be served both Saturday and Sunday mornings. To get to Pat and Sharry's house from Luray, VA ride north on Rt. 340 about 5 miles. When you see Springfield Elementary School on the left go about 1/2 mile further and turn left on Rt. 661 (Cavalier Road). Rt. 661 becomes a good gravel road. Ride 8/10 mile and turn right on Beylor's Ferry Road. Go 4/10 mile and their house is the third driveway on the left (#421 Beylor's Ferry Rd.). Turn left at the "Wheelie" and allow the dogs to get a good sniff. This will be another good one folks. We always have a good showing from both the Mid-Atlantic and Pensylvania areas. If you've never been to one of Pats functions, this is a great place to get a feel for what COG is all about. Please call Pat and Sharry at (540-7434874) or email them at psprague@shentel.net in advance so they can get a head count for the meals.

November 8,9,10 - Brrr Ride - Natural Bridge, VA - Please note the change in dates for this ride. It was originally scheduled for Nov.16,17 but has been moved up one week due to some scheduling conflicts. We are also planning to stay at the Natural Bridge KOA rather than our regular haunt; Otter Creek. Seems some of us are getting a bit soft in our old age and would like to have hot showers. Plans are to meet for breakfast Saturday morning, November 8, at 8:30 a.m. at the Halfway Cafe, 2234 Beech Ave., Buena Vista, VA. A map can be obtained by going to www.mapquest.com and typing in the preceeding address. The restaurant is at Beech and 23rd, one block over from Rt. 501 right in town. After breakfast we'll tool around the area on roads still to be determined (probably head west toward West Virginia) eventually ending up back at the Natural Bridge KOA where I plan to stay Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-562-8514 or online at www.koakampgrounds.com/where/va/46144.htm . Tent sites for two are $19-$21 plus $4 per additional person. Kamping Cabins can be had for between $34 - $45. Directions to the KOA and a map are also on the web site. It's on Rt. 11 right at exit 180 on Interstate 81.

Connecticut Connection Summer Ride 2002 by David Dutton Well folks, the CT Connection Summer ride is history. At one point it was in danger of being canceled as I struggled with finding time and motivation to go out and plan a route. With some last minute words of support and encouragement from Steve Smith, I said, "What the heck, let's do it." So the Sunday before, Jill and I were out piecing together some roads I'd discovered since we moved to Storrs about a year ago. Trouble found us about 80 miles into the route when thunder and rain sent us home. It’s hard to record route changes when the paper is getting wet. So the day before the ride we found ourselves back out picking up where we left off. In those two days we managed to link up 180 miles of scenic, twisty and traffic free (almost) roads.

A quick break to find out where we are?

Kicking back at the Dutton Homestead

SEPTEMBER 2002

Eleven bikes showed up at the meting place in Tolland, CT. We rode the northeast corner of the state Getting ready to head out from the Tolland, CT meeting place with a stop at The Vanilla Bean Cafe' in Pomfret where we had a chance to drink, chat, and some (John Purdy) chose to eat. We left The Bean in two groups again after John's group caught us on the first part. Riding south on Rt. 169 we veered east almost to the Rhode Island line, headed south some more before heading west to Rt. 207, a favorite road of mine to ride. A gas stop allowed the second group to join us again for a few minutes of drink and chatter. The last jaunt took us back to our place but not before a few of Jill's favorite roads around our house were traveled. Plenty of cold water and ice along with Jill's "delicacies" were waiting for our arrival. Again this year it was a hot, one time and temp sign flashed 96 degrees as we past, but enjoyable day. Come out and join us next year for CT Connection Summer Ride 2003.

Good grub & chat

Notes from the NE Webmaster by Rick Miller Greetings from planet Earth. You have nothing to fear. I come in Peace. Oh wait, wrong letter. Hiya. For those of us who are wired, the Net is a fabulous resource. Full of all kinds of useful, as well as useless info. Keeping the useless stuff to a minimum is hard; especially when you’re the Webmaster dealing with stale info. So this fall and winter, let’s help old Rick spruce up the NE website; what stays, what gets round filed. I plan to keep the “zippin around the northeast” animation cause it’s cool. Shoot me an email with your ideas (cog3k@yahoo.com). You know that a fulltime job can really interfere with your riding? I’ve logged just about 20,000 miles so far this year, yet feel that I’ve short-changed my bike. I plan to do a lot of riding between the first of August and the end of October, so if you see a blue Concours being ridden by a “Security Squad” advocate with a big ugly gray tank, flag me down or follow me. I usually have no clue where I’m heading, but having a blast getting there.

MASS COG Meet N Greet Rides David Fazzuoli plans to sponsor a "meet and greet" ride every Saturday in September and October from the Staples parking lot, intersection of Rt 9 & Rt 140 in Shrewsbury, MA. Meet @ 8:00am. Dave will not be able to make it to every ride but at least there will be an opportunity for MASS Coggers to hook up and ride together. For more info contact David Fazzuoli, 508-842-2707 or email: david@Fazzuoli.net

Massachusetts AAD Steps Down With much regret David Fazzuoli (#4610) of Shrewsbury, MA must step down from his current AAD position. New responsibilities at work will make it very difficult for him to devote time to this position. We thank Dave for all that he has done as the MA AAD and look forward to his future involvement. Dave will continue to be active and has even offered to host some MA Meet ’n Greets and participate when he can. This creates an opportunity for someone in the MA area. If you are interested in the AAD position, please contact the AD.

DelMarVa COG Presents Chunk Yer Punkins 5! Mark up your calendars and PDA's now - Punkin Chunkin' time is approachin'! Pre-Ride Gathering synopsis…

Governor Printz Blvd. Follow the boulevard until it ends at Philadelphia Pike. Turn left; the restaurant is ~0.7 mile on the right, just past the McDonald's at Harvey Road.

When: Saturday, November 2nd, 2002 Where: Coach House Restaurant 2605 Philadelphia Pike Claymont, Delaware Time: 8:00 AM Ride-Start: Between 9:00 and 9:30 AM

From the South, Alternate: I-95 North to the Harvey Road exit. Right at the top of the ramp. Follow Harvey Road until it ends at Philadelphia Pike (The McDonald's driveway will be dead ahead). Turn right, then right into the restaurant parking lot. ·From the West: Tough call, as there's really no direct way. One route is east on Naamans Road until it ends at Philadelphia Pike. Turn right.

The World Championship Punkin Chunk is a Delaware original; 2002 marks its 17th year. Originally conceived as a friendly competition - as well as a unique way to get rid of leftover pumpkins - it has grown tremendously, and has spawned similar competitions in other states (Idaho, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon, to name a few). Methods of flinging pumpkins include catapults, centrifugal, and the awesome air cannons. Last year's top three finishers were: Place 3rd 2nd 1st

Team 2nd Amendment Universal Soldier Old Glory

Distance 3649.29' 3718.77' 3911.02'

2000 result 3632.98' (3rd place) out of top 3 4085.00' (world record)

The Punkin Chunk is the weekend after Halloween, at the intersection of Roads 305 and 306, near Millsboro, Delaware. This year's EVENT dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 1st (12:30-11PM), 2nd (9AM-11PM) and 3rd (9AM-dusk). That said, the RIDE date is Saturday, November 2nd. Last year, admission was $5.00/person. As usual, prices are subject to change. Parking is $1.00 per vehicle - in a field. Bring side-stand support! Bring extra cash - this is an EVENT, with a number of vendors to spend money at (food, souvenirs, etc.). There's enough variety of food on site to satisfy nearly anyone's taste - and appetite! I'm mapping out a route along mostly back roads, including some actual twisties (surprise, some really exist in Delaware!). Meet Saturday morning, November 2nd, at the Coach House Restaurant (the former Claymont Diner) on Philadelphia Pike (Business US-13) at around 8:00 AM for breakfast. Good food at reasonable prices. Directions follow... From the North: I-95 South to I-495 South. Take Exit 5: US-13/Philadelphia Pike (second exit, the first being Exit 6: DE-92 /Naamans Road). Turn right onto Phila. Pike and head South for ~1.2 miles. The restaurant is on the right, just past the McDonald's at Harvey Road. From the South: I-495 North to Exit 4: US-13/DE-3/Governor Printz Blvd. The ramp ends at a T; go right. Take the first right, and then right at the light onto

Page 4

From the I-95/I-495 ramps, the restaurant is ~1.25 miles on the right, just past the light at Harvey Road. Another option is to make your way to I-95, then follow the appropriate directions above. From the East: Unless your bike swims, you'll be crossing one of the bridges from New Jersey. From the Delaware Memorial Bridge, follow the signs for I-495 North, then follow the "From the South" directions. From any of the other bridges, take I-95 South and follow the "From the North" directions. If you plan to breakfast with us, show up hungry (natch!), and as close to eight o'clock as possible. The sooner we finish breakfast, the sooner we can begin our ride - and reach our destination. Please fuel up the bike before arriving at the restaurant. Several gas stations are within about a mile, including Sunoco, Gulf, Getty, Exxon, Amoco... sorry, no Chevron. (Bring cash. No, I'm not charging a fee for the ride (although I will accept contributions for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (Ride for Kids), if anyone is so inclined). Admission to the Chunk is $5.00/person; parking is $1.00 per vehicle. I know I've mentioned it already, but it's worth repeating: Pack a side stand plate! The parking lot at the Punkin Chunk site is a field. Attention Allergy Sufferers: Remember to pack antihistamine!! If you're going, please reply via email (cog1283@Yahoo.com), or call me at home (302.791-0582 or 302.383-2403, evenings & weekends) or work (856.797-2979, ext.124, between 9AM and 5:00PM, Monday-Friday). Editor: (could be you)

The COG Northeast Area News is a publication for members of the Concours Owners Group in the Northeast Area. Submissions are welcomed, and members are encouraged to share information about a wide variety of motorcycling topics. The preferred method is via e-mail so the editor won’t have to do a lot of typing, but any type of legible submission will be gladly accepted. Digital images are welcome, but please do not embed them in the document. Please help keep information in the newsletter and our mailing list current. Please notify the editor of any needed corrections or updates. Many of the opinions stated in this publication may make no sense to those sound of mind and may just be conveniently ignored. If you use any of the information in this rag to incur damage to yourself, your motor or any innocent or not so innocent bystanders it is you own fault...you were warned!
