From the Area Director By Steve Smith Fall 2003
Hello All – Where were you when the lights went out? I trust everyone faired well through the Blackout of Summer 2003. As for me… well, errrr… ask me when you see me, but have some time to kill. I have some important news - It’s time once again to elect our COG Northeast Area Director for the next two-year term beginning this January. A full description of the nomination and election process, along with the nomination form, can be found in this newsletter. If you would like to nominate someone, please send in your nominations to the COG Secretary ASAP. You will notice that the newsletter is earlier than you may have expected—this is because of the elections. In fact, we hope to get another newsletter out early December with the results of the nominations and voting ballot. We need to have this election wrapped up before January 1.
Northeast Area News
It has been quite an eventful year here in the Northeast Area. I am grateful for the efforts of the folks who put together a very full ride and event schedule. There are at least 20 entries remaining on the schedule from now to the end of the year, including the Fall Foliage rally in one of my favorite places - Lake George, NY. What’s not to like… great Adirondack scenery and roads. Better still - almost all the crowds are gone after Labor Day weekend. I’ll be there and hope to see some new faces and old friends. I noticed that Pat Sprague, the Mid-Atlantic AAD, has already posted some early 2004 activities. Way to go Pat!! Now is the time for our membership to begin considering what rides will be hosted for 2004. Don’t be afraid to follow his lead by planning ahead. Any member can get involved to propose, suggest or more importantly, host a COG activity. Day rides; breakfast, lunch or dinner gatherings; overnight rides; and regional rallies are some of the types of activities you can help to organize and provide to other members in your area. At this time the 2004 fall regional rally is up for grabs and in need of a coordinator, as are all the Northeast rallies of 2005. Just because we have traditionally had a spring and a fall regional rally does not mean there is no room for expansion. If you have an idea for a ride or rally contact your local AAD or me as soon as possible to begin the planning. If you have no local AAD and you would like to see more COG activities in your region, you may want to consider this an opportunity to host an activity. There are many regions within the NE Area that need an AAD or someone to get the area more active. A wise man once said to me “plan it, and they will come.”
“. . . plan it ,and they will come . . .”
Planning is just what Jason Kaplitz, the 2004 COG Flood City National Rallymaster, is doing. He has been diligently working out the details and performing a most excellent job at coordinating this huge July 2004 COG event that will be held in Johnstown, PA. It takes a lot of effort and a staff of many to pull a national rally off. Many of the committees already have a chairperson, but three remain open. Jason is actively seeking coordinator/chairpersons to handle ERC, Door Prizes, and Merchandise Sales. Some of the committees will need a staff of volunteers to help out at the rally to help split up time & shifts. Registration is one that comes to mind. Inside the newsletter is more information on the rally committees. If you see something you would like to help out with, just contact Jason or the appropriate chairperson. One of our Northeast Area Editors has decided to step down. After accepting a new position at work, Doug Allen found himself traveling more often and home less. This left very little free time, which was spent mostly clearing some land he and his wife, Mary, recently acquired. It has even (gasp!) impacted his riding time. Doug felt that he was not able to provide the attention needed to this position. I completely understand his situation and thank him for all his efforts in helping to make our newsletter the quality publication it is. I know Doug & Mary will not be total strangers, and we will see them at future COG events. While talking about editors… Congratulations to our other editor, Louis Caplan, on becoming a first time dad and homeowner. I appreciate whatever effort he can put in between diaper changes. There are still nearly 50 of you who have a bad email address listed with COG membership. If you list an email address in the member directory and have never gotten an email from me you will need to update your information. We want to be able to keep you informed - Please help us by keeping your contact information current. Since I am the incumbent NEAD, I suppose this is the time to announce that, if nominated, I will run for another term. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the COG Directors and NE Leadership staff the past 11/2 year of my term. While one would think this job is a Inside this issue: cakewalk, to do it right requires more effort than you would Flood City National Update, Contact Info 2 think. I did not enter into this position with my eyes closed, although I did have a few curves tossed my way in the Chunk Yer Punkins Update, Northeast Elections 3 beginning. Sometimes I seem to get caught up in the Massachusetts Report, Scenes from Helvetia Ride 4 whirlwind and while my memory may have a momentary lapse, my focus and course are very clear. Personally, I feel Northeast Ride Schedule 5 I still have goals to accomplish and more to offer to COG The Lost Ride 6 and the NE Area. Fall Foliage Rally Registration

Flood City National Update by Jason Kaplitz Things are progressing well and beginning to come together. You can tell from the list of committees that we have a lot of great stuff in store for you at the rally. The last weekend in September is a rally scouting mission. At publishing time there were nearly 16 people scheduled to attend (almost a mini-rally in itself) to scope out roads, attractions, and activities. If you get this in time and want to attend, please contact Jason You will begin to read more about the National rally attractions & activities in a future Concourier and newsletter. We will be providing you with web sites and phone numbers for all the area visitor bureaus, museums, historic sites, and other attractions, so that you can be better prepared to plan your trip to the rally. One place you can start right now is the rally web page www.concours.org/2004 You will note on the list of committees below that we need 3 more coordinators. The On-Site Merchandise coordinator will chair the committee that organizes the sales of COG merchandise. This person will also oversee merchandise sales on the evening/night of the banquet, but maybe other times too, depending on the number of available volunteers. This person will work with the COG Merchandise Director to expedite the order and delivery to the rally. The Door Prize Coordinator/committee will work with the COG Industry Liason to solicit and collect door prizes for the rally. This person or committee will help at the banquet to ensure the door prize portion stays organized and on schedule. The ERC Coordinator will collect the names of those who sign up to participate in the ERCs sessions, keep track of which session people are signed, and let them know where and when to show up. It should be relatively simple as the ERC courses have already been arranged and set up. Rallymaster: Jason Kaplitz

Chunk Yer Punkins 6 Ride Update by Bob Chappell AAD-DelMarVa The World Championship Punkin Chunkin' (www.WorldChampionshipPunkinChunkin.com) is a Delaware original; 2003 marks its 18th year. Originally conceived as a friendly competition – as well as a unique way to get rid of leftover pumpkins - it has grown tremendously, and has spawned similar competitions in other states (Idaho, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon, to name a few). Methods of flinging pumpkins include catapults, centrifugal, and the awesome air cannons. Punkin Chunkin' is the weekend after Halloween, at the intersection of Roads 305 and 306, near Millsboro, Delaware. This year's event actually starts Halloween Day! The *event* dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 31st (12-4PM), November 1st (9AM-11PM) and 2nd (9AM-dusk). ** I had thought the Chunkin' would be the first full 3-day weekend after Halloween; a check of their web site showed me the error of my thinking. The *ride* date is Saturday, November 1st. Ride details are finally beginning to form. This year, we'll meet for breakfast at a to-be-determined location closer to the Punkin Chunkin' site - most likely in the Dover area, say around 8:00-8:30 AM. After breakfast, we'll head for the Chunk via back roads; ride duration should be about an hour or so (somewhat less than years past). After having our fill of festivities, we'll meet for a longer afternoon ride, in search of "Slower Lower Twisties". Destination: Another "eats joint". Stay tuned for updates. Ideas are welcome, especially from Chunk Yer Punkins ride veterans. Contact Bob Chappell: email:Cog1283@Comcast.net Phone: 302-791-0582

Massachusetts Report by Kevin E. Martin #145 - AAD-MA Well, as I’m writing this report, it’s almost Labor Day, and I’ve just about completed my first year as your Area Director and I’m happy to report we had a number of successful weekend rides throughout the MA/VT/NH Tri-State area. I was beginning to think that this riding season was going to be a wash out year for local “Meet N Greet” rides, especially considering the late start of summer and all of the rain we had, but luckily, many of the weekend rides were rain free – just the way I like it. Let it rain during the week, just leave the weekends sunny and dry! Now that’s a real motorcycling season. We had some great rides here in the MA area, and you can read all about them in an upcoming issue of the Concourier. My next ride is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th for an end of the summer ride up to Queeche Gorge Vermont. I’ll report about this ride in the next Concourier or newsletter. Scheduled events are published in the Northeast Newsletter, however event dates or details can change, so to view the most current information check out the Northeast Area Website, located at: http://www.concours.org/ne - or if you don’t have access to the internet, contact me via phone for the most up to date information on events scheduled in our area. Finally, I just want to say, “Welcome” to the new Massachusetts members who joined during the course of the year. Hope to see you all at one of the many COG events in the future. The Holiday season is right around the corner, and along with it comes cooler weather, which in my book makes for some of the best riding weather of the season. So keep that two-wheeler tuned up and go for a nice fall ride. See ya on the road.

The Lost Ride 2003 by Pat Sprague AAD-Mid-Atlantic John Hinton put together this very interesting May 16-18, 2003 ride for which he deserves full credit. El Nino, COG member since only early 2003 but present on every ride, put together the weather, for which he deserves full blame. But that didn’t deter some nine COGgers who braved fog, drizzle and rain to gather at Willville Bike Camp some two miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 178 in Meadows of Dan, VA. Present and smiling on Friday were John and Missy Lippy, Russell Fleming, Paul Farinholt, Zack Mully, John Hinton and yours truly. Dusty and Cindy Schilling joined us for breakfast on Saturday morning while Jason Kaplitz arrived Saturday afternoon. Saturday morning after breakfast John sent the “Foggy Mountain Boys” in two different directions in search of information to help in answering different questions pertaining to attractions and interesting oddities we searched for en route. The rider with the most correct answers won the contest but before departure John sweetened the pot by stating that he would buy desert for the winner. Now with the local restaurants’ reputation for excellent cobbler and bread pudding, all riders perked up and mounted their bikes. After a few short miles of wiping the outside and inside of my face shield I realized that the new Shoei helmet didn’t have the Fog City
John Hinton and Pat Sprague
Saturday evening we were joined by Chris Walls, a British chap on a solo global tour on his F-650. He had recently arrived from NZ and Down Under and had a couple months to spend in the US. Chris later spent a couple days at COGger Zack Mully’s flat in Washington, D.C. before heading west. Once again, motorcycling in general and COG in particular make our planet a little smaller and a bit friendlier. After biscuits and coffee at Willville on Sunday morning we headed home. Zack and I decided to avoid the surely fogged-in Parkway and found some small back roads to the East. At one point we collected four deer on our left intent on crossing into us; four precisely timed blasts from the Fiamms over about fifty yards turned the herd back into the thicket. We then hit steady rain for the next 80 miles. John has said he’ll plan another interesting “Lost Ride” for 2004 and I know it’ll be a good one…we’re working on the weather. On arriving home I walked into the bath house shower and washed off the rain suit, peeled that off, got back in and washed off the Roadcrafter suit, peeled that off and climbed into a 104 degree hot tub for 40 minutes. It’s 94 degrees outside as I write this; this year I’m not complaining about the heat. Nope, not gonna complain about the heat.

shield that I was used to. Zack Mully saved the day by exchanging face shields from his Shoei to mine. Zack didn’t miss the Fog City as his Concours fairing works well. My KLR needs more help in that area but soon we were clipping along in light fog at 40! We saw some of our friends riding the loop in the opposite direction, a nice way to split up the group. Thanks, John. After arriving back at Willville most of the group went out for supper while I remained at Willville to shower and warm up. While there Will treated me to a viewing of his bikes. He has a DR 250 and I a 350 so we shared some ideas about these fun machines. Willville is a very nice and easily accessible campground and Will is a first class host. I think you’d enjoy a stay here when you’re in the area. Turns out that Zack and I won the dessert, which John graciously delivered to the campground. Will and I had the campfire going, which was much enjoyed until El Nino provided another deluge. We retreated to the porch. Page 6

Yes folks, it’s that time again! Terry (aka COG crash dummy 2001) Faherty and Scott Sorger are at it again! We’re heading back to the Adirondacks to enjoy the great roads, scenery, and some COG camaraderie. Rally headquarters will again be O’Sullivans Motel, in the Village of Lake George. We have five different self-guided routes mapped out of varying lengths for your riding pleasure, and if the weather cooperates like the last time that won’t be a problem. For those that prefer a pool and hot tub, the EconoLodge right across the street from O’Sullivan’s is a good alternative, but a bit more expensive. The Sundowner next door is also hot tub equipped and a good middle of the road choice. Please mention that you are with Concours Owners group when calling O’Sullivan’s.
