Cognitions: Random thoughts from the Northeast Area Director - By Steven Smith #3184 Issue 4, Membership Stats so often I get a question Northeast Area membership numbers, so this month I decided to share some info with you. The NE 2008 Every membership has declined a bit since this time last year. We used to be around 615, but now we stand at 576 Northeast Area COG members. This does not include Associate members, of which there are 125. I do not see the decline as a problem, it is just the normal ebb and flow of membership. We have 71 new members who have joined COG so far in 2008. Looking at the new member list on the last page of this issue there are 21 since the last newsletter in June. In each newsletter issue we provide the readers with a list of the new members. Please consider reaching out and introducing yourself to new members that live in your town or region. If you need contact info for new members you can ask an AAD or myself. I encourage new members to attend a club rally or other event This is really the best way to experience what COG is really all about.

Northeast Staff & Leadership The Northeast Area is still recruiting for an enthusiastic member (or members) to take over the AAD position for Maryland and south central Pennsylvania. Russell Fleming will be stepping down from the position at the end of this year and it would be a shame if the activities suffered in this sector. There may be other regions in the NE Area that could benefit from having an AAD or point person to help organize and facilitate getting more activity under way. If you think you would like to try to be this person, please touch base with me. This is the role of the AAD as I see it. They can host events or provide guidance to other members who wish to host an activity in their sector. The AADs coordinate the activities in their sector, provide an activity list to the Area Director, and post them in the online Event Calendar. It takes only a little effort, but the rewards are many.

Northeast Event Schedule Upcoming rallies… (Please notice that the list does not include the 2009 Spring Fling: We’re still looking for a host and location for this event.)

2008 Bar Harbor Fall Rally: Oct 16–19, more info and registration form in this issue.

2009 National Rally: June 8-11, Hosted by the COG Southeast Area in Fontana Dam, NC.

2009 Fall Rally: Sept 24-29, Hosted by Jason Kaplitz in Wellsboro, PA. Save the date.

Newly added Connecticut Events… , Norm & Lorie Walton (CT AADs) just added the September and October First Tuesday of the month dinner outings to the schedule, as well as the August 24 “Run to the Shoreline” ride. All are listed in the Ride Calendar in this issue.

COG’s New Web Site—www.cog-online.org I was hoping to see more NE Area members sign up to use COG’s new web. This is a club provided service that is included as part of your annual membership. We refer to the new web site as the COG Member Online Service (COGMOS) web. This is because it provides membership services beyond that of a basic web page. One of the benefits of creating a user account on COGMOS is that the system will send you membership renewal notices efficiently by email and provide the ability to quickly renew your membership and pay dues online with a credit card through a secure connection. We are even trying out online rally registration with the 2008 fall rally, where you can register and pay for the rally online. There is a member only document library to access archived issues o00f The Concourier, area newsletters, Chalkdust, ride routes, GPS files, and much more. Browse the online COG merchandise storefront, see what item looks like with all new photos, and make purchases easily. Our Merchandise Czar (and fellow Northeast member) Dave Muir spent countless hours to make your COG shopping experience better. He even managed to bring back the much sought after COG Decal Set. Signing up to use COGMOS is simple, and if your dues are current there is absolutely no cost. Sign up now by going to www.cog-online.org, click on Join COG Today, and following the instructions. Please contact me if you have any questions or issues.

Newsletters These Northeast Newsletters are published six times a year. Several years worth of Northeast Area Newsletters are archived on COGMOS web site. In an effort to “go green” and help save on ever increasing printing and mailing costs we make the newsletter available as an electronic publication, or what I call eNews. At this time members have the option to receive the newsletter in hard copy or eNews. With eNews, when a new issue is ready members will receive an email with a web link to download the latest newsletter. Need more incentive… the electronic version includes full color photos. If you wish to be switched over to eNews, please send me an email.

COG article deadlines The deadline for the next Northeast Area News is September 30. Concourier articles must be submitted through me to the editor prior to these dates: Fall Issue - September 1, Winter Issue - December 1 Until next time, ride safe.

Fall Rally Registration is Open - by Tony Shelver Registration for the 2008 fall rally in Bar Harbor Maine is now open and the registration form, complete with details is provided later in this issue. In addition to mailing in your registration and rally fee, this will be the first Northeast event that we will use online registration using the Event Calendar on the new COG website: www.cog-online.org (ed. To register for the rally online you will first need to set up an account on new web site, which is provided at no additional cost for COG members. You do need to sign up for it separately by visiting the web site and going through the registration process. All the rooms blocked at the Kimball Terrace Inn are harbor facing rooms. This is will be a casual, no-frills rally, with the focus on riding and socializing. As this is the end of the Bar Harbor tourist season, the roads and attractions tend to be relatively quiet. Most places of interest to COGgers should still be open, but it is best to call ahead if you have a specific interest. In addition to the riding, there is a lot to do in the rally area, including hiking, sightseeing and just taking in the unique Maine coastal atmosphere. Bar Harbor is a well-known tourist destination (rated #16 in the USA, and in the top 100 in the world), due to the unique beauty of it’s rugged sea and mountain surroundings, and attractions such as Acadia National Park, breweries, boat tours, museums, gardens, Kimball Terrance Inn oceanarium and more. It is also an excellent base for the great riding in Down East Maine all the way up to Lubec. There is good riding to the south as well, in the Deer Isle / Blue Hill area. Rte 191 to the north made the ’10-best’ list in Rider magazine a few years back. All these great little roads wind through typical Maine coastal scenery and fishing villages. We have posted a downloadable list of Down East restaurants, available from the rally web page on www.cog-online.org web site. Thanks to member Matt Brady for compiling this list for us. VA/WV Report - by Kurt & Sue Nordsrom, #6049 Well its newsletter time again, here goes… Another COG Nationals are in the books and the faithful that attended had a great time. If you have not had the opportunity I would strongly suggest going to the forum and look at the pictures and read the reports on what you missed. Next years Nationals is going to be almost in our back yard. Make plans today to attend! The first step is to get off your lazy backsides and make your hotel, motel or camping reservation at Fontana. Step two will be filling out your National Rally Registration Form that should be forth coming shortly. Keep an eye on the NEW COG web site www.cog-online.org for National Rally updates. Now on to other news… As most of you know July 16th, 2008 was National Ride to Work Day. I hope everyone did his or her part. The weekend of July 19th – 20th, Kurt & Sue Nordstrom held a Wrench Fest at their residence. First off, I would like to thank Sue for cooking up a great lunch on both days. She really put out a great spread of Burgers, Dawgs and all the fixings. Secondly, I would also like to thank Rich Riczinger (MOB) our Tech Editor (plus his much prettier better half Donna) for donating their time for two days for fellow Coggers to learn from his vast knowledge of the C-10 and C-14. We only had one problem though; the showing was very poor. Not sure why, I took a shower both days and my Rabies shot was up to date. Strangely, the emails to me from you fellow Coggers stated we should have had six bikes to work on Saturday and three on Sunday. There were only three bikes total all weekend that got trashed; I mean repaired. I would like to thank the four Coggers that did show up that stated they wanted to just “look, see and meet new people”…we had a great time with you. We will attempt another Wrench Fest in the spring, if that one doesn’t fly this annual event in the VA / WV region will be shelved during my stint as AAD. There is way too much prep time that goes into hosting an event. Rich, Donna, Sue and myself could have gone out for a nice ride over the weekend instead. Unless you have been living under a rock these last few months you should be aware of the Northeast’s Dog Days Rally is being held August 8– 10 in Arbovale, WV. Because of the newsletter deadline we will be unable to give you all the news, tails and happenings of this rally. The next newsletter will have all the details for you to enjoy. This September 19th – 21st program your GPS to the Charlottesville, VA KOA Campground for the Wine Ride. Complete details are in the ride schedule of this issue. October 17th – 19th promises to be an exciting month with the Fall Foliage Ride and Camp as we head to Willville Motorcycle Campground in Meadows of Dan, VA. We’ll meet Friday night at Willville Motorcycle Camp located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 178, approximately ¾ of a mile west on Route 58. For more information on the Willville Camp go to: www.willvillebikecamp.com. Willville Bike Camp now has “one” cabin for those that do not want to sleep on mother earth, can you say make your reservations early! For those of you with Land Yachts; there is a 5 star RV resort called Meadows of Dan Campground, they are located between the BRP and Willville, they also have two luxury cabins with bathrooms. For additional info go to: www.meadowsofdancampground.com Additional hardtop lodging is available at the Blue Ridge Motel (540-952-2244) on Route 58 at Meadows of Dan. I would like to thank fellow Cogger Dusty Schilling for volunteering to put together an enjoyable ride route for us to follow on Saturday after breakfast. As always please have a safe ride to Willville as the Grasshoppers and Tree Frogs (US Park Police) will be out in full force this time of the year. The fines on the BRP for pushing the envelope start @ $500.00 and can quickly go to $1,500.00; this can really ruin a weekend.

November 7th – 9th we will gather once again at the Natural Bridge KOA Campground just off I-81 and Route 11 to camp on Friday and Saturday nights. For those not wanting to rough it, cabins with portable electric (noisy) heaters are available at the KOA. Please call 540-2912770 to reserve one. There are many hotels and motels in close proximity to the KOA. They are: Natural Bridge Inn & Conference Center, Route 11 & Route 130, Natural Bridge, VA, 540-291-2121; Red Mill Inn, 50 South Red Mill Road, Natural Bridge, VA, 540-291-1704; Budget Inn, I-81 Exit 180 US Route 11, Natural Bridge, VA, 540-2912896. We will meet for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. at the Pink Cadillac Restaurant just a mile north of the KOA on Route 11. KOA info: koakampgrounds.com/where/va/46144.htm This ride and camp, started several years ago by Guy Young, has become a perennial favorite. On December 13, 2008 join Kurt & Sue for as we dine on awesome seafood for lunch at the Dockside Restaurant, 1787 Castlewood Drive, Colonial Beach, VA, 804-224-8726. From wherever you are, make your own route and plan to arrive between 11:30 and 12. The restaurant is at the southernmost point of Colonial Beach, adjacent to the Colonial Beach Yacht Center & Marina. Visit Dockside's website for more information as well as a look at their menu: www.dockside-blueheron.com. Sue and I look forward to seeing you at one or more of these events. Til then, ride safe…Kurt & Sue.

MD/S. Central PA Report- by Russ Fleming, #599 What’s happening in Maryland and Pennsylvania? The last 2 months only a few things went on. The first was the North / South with 28 people attending. It seems that the long distance riders attended more than the locals. 1997 was when this ride originated it was based on the Mason Dixon line during the Civil War. It has turned into a real North South ride when we had two people show up from the South in Florida (Mike Schmidt and Mike Nasca). We had 5 people from the North in Canada. (Sam Koehler, Bryan Jordan, Doug Hall, Trish and Jerry Boyer) to meet at Martha and Russell’s in Maryland the free state. The motorcycle world is a small world. Sam used to turn the wrenches for his brother (a factory BSA dirt track rider) in the late 50’s and early 70’s. They raced all over the east coast. Sam is a young 75 years old and rode his C-14 to Maryland decided not to go on one of the rides. Sam stayed back at the house with us to go shopping for food for the evening cookout. While in the Giant in Westminster we ran into a motorcycle friend that raced at the same time and tracks that Sam and his brother did. They talked about the racing days and this put a spark in Sam’s eyes. Saturday night the conversation came up about high mileage. Since the Concours was introduced in 1986 we have ten members who have owned 1 to 3 Concours we started totaling miles and came up with over 2 million miles logged on by these 10 people on Concours. For more about these 10 people check out the next Concourier. What is coming up in the next couple months is the Sporting at its Finest Ride in Carlisle PA on the August 17. September 14 is the “Over the River and Thru the Woods” Ride that Tony Bourn has laid out for us in Harpers Ferry WV. For more details on these rides check the COG web under schedules for more details. Just a reminder come December Russell is Stepping down as the AAD for MD & South Central PA so that he has more time to spend with his wife, parents and ride his motorcycles. So if you want to have rides in this area you better step up and become and AAD.

Connecticut Report - by Norm & Lorie Walton, #7011

Northern New England - by Kevin Martin, #145

Greetings to all riders! We hope you are enjoying a great summer of riding the highways and byways of the Northeast. So far the summer has been an enjoyable one with (thanks to our COG members,) some great rides included! With a few months to go, we are looking for destination suggestions for September and October, as well as any great dinner spots for our Tuesday night monthly meetings. We have also started thinking about our end of the season gathering. We would love to hear your ideas on both date and time as well as the venue.

Thanks to everyone who attended my Mid-Summer Rally up in Stowe Vermont this past July. A special thanks to the Carrie and her staff at the Commodores Inn for making us feel welcome during this four day event. Also, as I mentioned during the banquet introduction, the rally wouldn’t have been possible without the behind the scenes help from Dave Samuels who spent weeks working out the contract details and our very own Steve Smith who managed all of the member registrations and online web pages.

Our most recent trip was to the Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown, MA. The July 20 ride was hosted by Gerry Barnett and it was a great ride and very well attended with about 18 bikes!! Some of the riders in attendance were; Mike Cullinan, Jay Richardson, Peter Elovich, Jeffery Villar, Jerry Gillespie, George Roth, Mike Benham, Mike Green, Mike and Rachel, Mike Krukiel and Craig Rabin (sorry if we omitted anyone). We would like to thank everyone for the great turnout. The ride began with breakfast at Bickford’s in Enfield CT. We started off for the reservoir traveling on some great roads through MA for about 50 miles. The weather was hot and humid, with an overcast sky. Arriving at the reservoir in Belchertown, MA, we took our traditional pictures. The view was great despite the hazy conditions. We hung out for a time and decided to start off for our lunch destination, which included a ride around the Quabbin Reservoir.

We were also very fortunate to have great weather that weekend especially since it had rained off and on the previous two weeks leading up to the rally and that this has been one of the wettest summers that I can remember is quite a while. At last count we had 65 people attended the banquet dinner. We also had several first time rally attendees and new COG Members. Hope everyone had as good a time as I did. There are more photos from the rally on the next page, thank to Greg Habel and Scott Kaplan.

We then circumnavigated the reservoir and traveled some roads that looked more like driveways (way narrow!) We stopped for lunch at Bub’s BBQ in Sunderland MA. It is a good restaurant; very rustic with great food! The menu even included culinary delights like fried Twinkies and fried cheesecake. After a great lunch we all piled back on and took off for another great ride back into CT. After splitting with the group, Norm and I hit picked up RT 91 in Enfield to get back to Cromwell, but not before we ran into a drenching rain storm that lasted a few miles. Thank you to Gerry for a great ride and for all of you that showed up. It was a great day! We hope to see more of you during the rest of the season. Enjoy!

Western PA Report - by Joe Cyprych, #4665 Hello fellow Coggers. We are probably about half way thru the season and all ready have some great rides under our belts. Wellsboro, Thunder in the Valley, and Cooks Forest … all of them had great turnouts. We even had a great turnout from the gang south of the Mason-Dixon line for Cooks Forest. Thanks to all that attended and I hope y’all had a great time. By the time you read this, the Dog Days weekend rally will be in the books. What a fantastic area for riding. Don’t forget that we’re also continuing to hold our Sunday Meet, Greet and Rides every week through the season – check the ride schedule for details. I had a chance to meet quite a few new members this year at rides and I’m sure they will turn into long time friends like so many others that Michele and I have met through this club. We still have a lot of riding to do this year so don’t be shy, c’mon out and join the group.

Group photo from the Stowe, Vermont Summer Rally (more photos on page 5)

Since the Rally it has been pretty quiet around here relative to riding as I’ve been really busy working and making plans for my oldest daughters wedding coming up on August 9th. This is a very exciting time for us so I’ve taken a break from planning rides in August although Greg Habel has stepped up and offered to host a ride on August 23rd to fill in the void. Greg will be hosting a ride to the Vanilla Bean Café in Connecticut for lunch then lead the group to Excalibur Powersports to check out their bike inventory before heading back for home. The ride will start from Lowell’s Restaurant on Rt 140 in Mendon Mass where riders will meet at 8 am for breakfast with the ride leaving at 9 am. I hope to join in on this ride as it has been a couple of years since I’ve been down to the Vanilla Bean. Two weeks after Greg’s ride, I’ll be hosting a ride up through the White Mountains on Saturday September 6th, , so mark that date on your calendar. Boy the summer is going by fast! In fact, the Fall Rally is just around the corner. The Fall Rally will be held in a new location this year up in Northeast Harbor (Bar Harbor) Maine, hosted by Tony Shelver. (ed. See the registration for and addition information in this newsletter) The rally dates are October 16 – 19 so make your reservations early. That’s it for now. Ride safe and have fun. Regards; Kevin

Summer Rally –Getting Stowed in Stowe, VT - by Greg Habel, #7110 (photos by Greg Habel & Scott Kaplan) Helmets and hats-off to host and AAD Kevin Martin and all the rally staff for pulling off another fantastic rally. From Thursday July 10th thru Sunday July 13th rally participants had plenty of opportunities to explore some of New England’s best riding whilst in VT, nearby states NH and upstate NY. In addition there was a nice Welcome Social on Friday night at the rally headquarters (Commodores Inn) which included beer/wine and hors d'oeuvres. Riders arrived from all parts of the Northeast as far as Virginia, Ontario and New Brunswick. Mother Nature provided us with almost rain free weather and the occasional glimpses of VT wildlife such as moose and deer just to keep our braking skills sharp. Participants made good use of the bulletin board in the lobby to get participation in the rides they were interested in. On Saturday Chris Batista and I had the pleasure of riding in a 3 person all day ride led by NH local guy Mike Benham who was very familiar with the area. We opted for Mike’s modification of the posted 266 mile VT/NH Loop. We found one particular road at the beginning of the ride to be a bit much on the fairing-rattling side but most of the roads were traffic free and in good condition. Our riding pace matched very well even though we were riding-our-own-ride. I had recently added an Autocom Active-Plus communication system and connected it to my trusty Motorola GMRS radio. This replaced a cheaper IMC Motorcom system that fell apart after a couple of years. I keep relearning “You get what you pay for”. In comparing the 2; the Autocom is much more durable/robust; especially when looking at the wiring (the IMC had suffered a bent pin and cord extraction). With a fresh set of alkaline batteries in the GMRS I was able to stay in communication for 2 rides without battery depletion. I had previously been using the rechargeable batteries which seemed to die mid way through my other rides. We took the opportunity to ride through one of the covered bridges in Lunenburg VT and then made our way to the small historic town of Island Pond VT for lunch at a local restaurant. The chicken salad with grapes and nuts was a perfect light meal for me for the rest of the afternoon. After crossing into NH we took a look at the time and decided to cut the route diagonally to make sure we were back in time for the photo shoot and banquet. We got within 5 miles of the Canadian border therefore fulfilling my original goal to get up to northern VT and close to the Canadian border where I hadn’t ridden before. Back at Commodores Inn a nice group picture was taken of all the attendees next to the Inn. The banquet feast was up to usual high COG standards with something for everyone at the buffet. The prime rib was mouth watering and easily washed down with local VT beer. This year’s rally prizes were Exxon-Mobil gas cards; something everyone could use without a doubt. It was great to see new members at the rally; some with brand new C14s. Everyone had their eyes on the C14 with a beautifully matched side-car. COG rally frequenters helped the new attendees get acclimated to the on-goings of a COG rally. When chatting with the new folks I found them frequently smiling and having a great time. No wonder we all keep coming back!
