Cognitions: Random thoughts from the Northeast Area Director - By Steven Smith #3184 Issue 2, 2009
Each year it feels like a longer winter than usual. Like many of you I was looking for some fun activities. Shoveling snow and chipping ice just were not cutting it! The motorcycle show was fun, but what I really craved was a motorsports fix. Thankfully, New York members Steve & Sue Cerutti came up with an interesting idea and organized a mid-winter track day; although not the type you are thinking. As a remedy for the “need for speed,” Steve lured several COGGers for a fun filled day at Grand Prix NY, an indoor go-cart track facility where cart speeds can reach 40 MPH. The 1/4 mile track circuit provided man twists and turns, and it even had an elevation change. Most of us participated in two back-to-back 10minute races. Three diehards signed on for two additional races. We all had a ton of fun, although we left with very, very sore arms, shoulders, and backs. Now the weather is rapidly improving and I hope that you are able to get out and do some early spring riding. The daily temperature is slowly climbing here in southern New England and even I have managed to get out for a ride or two. There’s still a lot of sand and salt on the road that should begin to get washed away by the April showers. Looking at the ride schedule, there are lots of spring COG activities to lure you out. Club Happenings: The Northeast Area is continually seeking volunteers. The more members we have involved, the better the club will be. The simplest way to begin is to plan something that you like and would do anyway. Submit it for the events calendar with the pertinent info like date, meeting place and time, and a brief description. Then sit back an enjoy. If others attend… Greaat!! If not, at least you had a good time doing something you like and wanted to do anyway. To get started contact me and I will be happy to get you started in the right direction. I do like to have AAD positions filled so that there is a point of contact and information source for members in each regional section of the Northeast Area. I am hoping to fill a few positions that have opened up recently. Please contact me if you want more information or are ready now to get more involved with COG and feel you may be the right person for these opportunities. First… we’re still looking for a volunteer to take over the AAD position for Maryland and southeast Pennsylvania. Russell Fleming announced over a year ago that he would be stepping down at the end of 2008. That time has come and gone and I am really surprised no one has expressed interest in this vacant position. Next up… I was recently informed that our AAD in eastern Ontario (Ottawa region) has decided to “step down due to other commitments.” Over the past six years Ron MacDonald organized club activities in his region and ran a Yahoo! Groups web page to promote club activities and sharing a common interest. I’d like to thank Ron for his efforts and wish him well in his semiretirement. With Ron leaving and no one in line to take his place, the note on the front page of his web site says it all... “After 6 years, this website is closing down... due to lack of Volunteers, Activity and Participation... Truism:If you don't get involved, it won't happen...” I am hoping there is an enthusiastic, personable character in the Ottawa and Quebec region willing to step into this AAD position and get the members fired up. Hmmmm… perhaps someone who has written several Concours song parodies? Lastly, there is a need to find a replacement newsletter editor as I am handling all aspects of the newsletter since Louis left. Many hands can lessen the load. There is a prerequisite that the editor use MS-Publisher so that the transition is seamless and we suffer no interruption with our online publishing service. If you feel you are a match to this position, please contact me and we can discuss this a bit more by phone. 2009 Activities: Hopefully you will be able to find some time in your busy schedules to fit in a COG activity or two. There are several places to find the Northeast Area Calendar of Events. There is always a listing in the back of each newsletter (sometimes abbreviated, depending on space). You can download a printable version from the online library. Probably the best resource is the online Event Calendar, where you can check out the events from all COG Areas. Look these over, as there are many choices. The COG National Rally (or should it be international?) will be held in early June at Fontana Dam Resort in North Carolina is the big event of the year. It is close enough to be within striking distance for many of us in the northeast. I would like to go, but have been hedging because my son’s high school graduation may conflict, and I am fighting with limited vacation time. Details for the national have been in the Concourier, with the most up to date info posted on the web site. Locally, the Northeast Area regional rallies are generally our area’s flagship events. This year’s spring event is the “Back to the Bridge” Spring Fling organized by Guy Young, and is being held May 13-16 in Natural Bridge, VA. The mail in registration were in the last newsletter, but is also available online. Limited details are in the Calendar of Events in this newsletter. Hurry up and reserve your room and register as the deadline for this event is coming up very soon. The Fall Rally will be hosted by Jason Kaplitz September 24-27 in Wellsboro, PA. The event is detailed in a short article in this newsletter. The registration form should be in the next newsletter, but forms can be download from the COG web site and online registration is open now. Looking Ahead to Future Rallies: You may have noticed that we have reused many past regional rally locations over the years. I suppose it is partly because this is one of those times when “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” These rally locations have worked really well from the organizers point of view and offers members great riding, a nice place to stay, and decent food. It is very easy to recycle these events as the groundwork has already been done and all it takes is a few phone calls to make it happen. We will probably continue to return to places like Wellsboro, PA, Lake George, NY, and Marlinton, WV every once in a while because they are member favorites. It would be nice to get an infusion of new ideas so that we can change it up at least once a year. Unfortunately, it seems the core COG NE rally planners have run out of suitable location ideas. Those of us that have organized a (Cognitions - Continued on page 2)

rally have learned that not every resort, hotel, or motel is a suitable location for a rally, and that just picking one from the Internet or phone book doesn’t always work. What are we to do? To hold rallies at new location we will need more member support to help with finding new rally locations and hopefully assisting with the event organization. You know your local areas better than we do and maybe you know of a place that would be perfect for a rally. We’re not expecting you to do it all on your own. COG can provide a rally how-to quick start guideline that will get you going. You can contact any veteran rally host for pointers, ideas, and mentoring. If you want help, it is there for you. A few considerations:
•
Good riding. This is the main reason we are there.
•
Sufficient number of rooms for our group. Depending on the event size we have required 20-80 rooms. If more than one lodging property will be used, they should be located in close proximity to each other for ease of mingling.
•
Affordability. Most Connie owners are frugal, especially in today’s economic climate.
•
Things to do on foot once bike is parked. Food & beverage within walking distance of the lodging is highly recommended. This allows attendees to leave the bike parked at the end of the day.
•
Rider friendly lodging and staff will significantly affect the overall success of the event.
•
A nearby campground is a nice feature.
How can you get started? Look for places in your home region. Talk to your local chamber of commerce or convention bureau. Watch for other groups or clubs having rallies in your region; if it works for them, it may work for us. Of course, nothing says the rally has to be a big ordeal with an organized banquet dinner, door prizes, etc. Maybe you prefer to organize a low key rally without the fuss of a banquet dinner.

All ideas will get a fair shake and will be looked over by a rally review panel I will put together. I am hoping to be able to offer a prize for any ideas that we use for one of our regional rallies. Northern New England - by Kevin Martin, #145 Hi Gang. As I write this, I notice that there are only faint traces of snow remaining in my yard, and the street sweepers in my town are out in full force. Ever notice that the roads seem to be worse after the street sweepers clean them up? Drives me nuts, but I digress. Street sweepers aside, the days are getting longer and the weather is getting gradually warmer, and I’m itching to go for a group ride, how about you? As I outlined in the last Newsletter and with a little help from my friends, the Northern New England Area is well positioned this year to offer rides and events to suit everyone. I anticipated that I wouldn’t be able to make many of the regional and national COG events this year, I opted to increase the number of local rides and events I host in our area. Our first official COG event for 2009 was my annual winter social and we broke a record for attendance of any of my previous socials with 28 people attending…..way to go gang! Thanks to everyone who took the time to travel up to Lowell for this event. I realize that many of you traveled long distances to attend this gathering and I very much appreciate your participation. I’d also like to thank Steve Smith our AD for contributing to the meal costs again this year. These off-season socials are a great way to get a large group of members together to share stories or plan out the next riding season. You can view pictures that were taken during the event by following this link: gallery.me.com/ke.martin#100022
Also, Dave Geyer, our new Northeast Area Web Editor, joined in on the fun and took video of this event and posted it on the Northeast website. To view Dave's video, follow this link: www.cog-online.org/clubportal/clubstatic.cfm?clubID=1328&pubmenuoptID=25657
(editor note: realizing that these COG web addresses are a bit long and not easy to remember or type in, you can quickly get to the Northeast Area pages by using this shortcut: www.tinyurl.com/cognortheast)
The Lowell Brewery Exchange has a large seating area and didn’t mind the COG membership re-organizing their tables to enable everyone to sit together. As you can see, we pretty much took over the place.
2009 Northeast Area Fall Rally - Jason Kaplitz, #62
September 24-27 - Wellsboro, PA Mark your calendars. Book your rooms. Register. The town of Wellsboro has proven to be a great location for NE regional rallies. Its central location is just a day ride or less for most Northeast Area members and offers great riding and sightseeing at an affordable price. Our host town is located in north central Pennsylvania, along the historic Route 6 corridor, and very close to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and an easy ride to New York State's Finger Lake Region. Wellsboro is well known for the old fashion gas street lights. The rally area is abundant with great roads, terrific scenery, wineries, and museums (i.e. Curtis Museum and Corning Glass Museum) Our rally headquarters will be the Penn Wells Lodge, 62 Main St, Wellsboro, PA 800.545.2446 (www.pennwells.com) A limited block of rooms will be held until August 24. Room rates vary depending on type of room, and are approximately $70/night plus tax. Ask the Penn Wells about room options and pricing. Be sure to mention Concours Owners Group as rooms outside our block do book quickly. Alternate Lodging is the Penn Wells Hotel, whose origin dates back to the late 19th century, and it still retains the charm of years gone by. Next door to the lodge is the Sherwood Motel ($79-$89) (www.sherwoodmotel.org) 800.626.5802. There is a campground only a few miles from the lodge for those that would prefer to camp. Make your own arrangements by contacting the campground. Stony Fork Creek Campground, 658 Stony Fork Creek Road, Wellsboro, PA, www.stonyforkcamp.com 570.724.3096 The rally fee is $40. There is a $5 discount for COG members, and an additional $5 discount for COG members who register online. The rally fee includes our Saturday dinner which will again be the famous smorgasbord at the Mary Wells restaurant located in the Penn Wells Hotel.
The winter social sets an attendance record. A good time was had by all.
Now that the season kick off social is over its time to concentrate on riding. As Austin Powers would say, “Yeah Baby”! So in a few short weeks I’ll be leading my first group ride for 2009 out to the Massachusetts North Shore area stopping for lunch in historic Rockport Harbor. After that, on May 2nd, the Habels & Mulloy’s team up again to host another spring tech session. Be sure to mark this one on your calendar and stop by to say hello and kick some tires. Check out the COG-online calendar for all of the Northern New England events scheduled for this year. See you on the road.
All rides will be self guided. Sample ride route sheets and Garmin GPS files will be available for download from the COG web site library. We have been trying to “go green” and will have only a limited number of copies of route sheets so remember to download or print the routes before you leave. Got Questions?

Metro NY Report - by Terry Faherty #792
Well it’s that time again; my trusty and faithful AD Steve Smith has sent me a reminder that the newsletter deadline is right around the corner. Steve would also like the newsletter early since our newsletter editor for the NE has resigned and he has taken over the duties until a suitable replacement can be found. Well, early is a wish on his part but on time it will be.
Greetings all! Winter has decided to linger a bit longer here in most of the northeast. Since my Fall ride was less than a hit attendance wise, I'll be waiting a bit to get any rides going. Looks like April is a real mess for me schedule wise so things will be a bit slim on ride days anyway. (I'll be attending the Spring Fling at Natural Bridge though, thanks to a lucky vacation pick. I plan on heading down to Front Royal, VA. on Tuesday and then taking the Skyline Drive to the Blue Ridge to arrive at Natural Bridge. If anyone is interested in hooking up for the trip just drop me a line. This will be my fourth time staying at the Natural Bridge Inn and I've never been disappointed. Anyone who was still on the fence in regards to my offer of Americade digs can relax; due to a lack of response we had no choice but to let the room go. Oh well! I guess fifteen years straight will have to do! We'll be back for next year just not in town. Now that my usual accomplice bought a house just south of Lake George, I get to stay on the cheap! I'm thinking about doing a Not a Rally Rally in L.G. perhaps this summer. Basically a ride in on Friday, ride Saturday and split Sunday. No banquet, no gifts, just show and enjoy. Please give me an idea if this would be something the NE crew would enjoy. That’s it for now. Hope to see all of you on the road. Till then keep the rubber side down.
Here in VA & WV the late winter months of February and March have been fickle over the last few years. Because of this I did not plan anything in our area. Russell Fleming the former AD for western Maryland did plan the Crab Cake Ride in March over on Maryland’s Eastern Shore; this has become a NE favorite. Russell was hoping the weather Gods would cooperate and they did for a change this year. While some in the NE were dining on Crab Cakes a few of us headed to Canaan Valley WV to partake in some Winter Getaway time with our significant others. Fellow Cogger Jason Kaplitz from PA organized this Winter Getaway, and in typical “GS Jay” fashion the room rates were cheap, cheap, cheap. Guy Young let it be known that the annual Maple Syrup Festival was going to be held in Pickens, WV. My dear wife just had to go, I figured it was going to be as interesting as watching grass grow on rocks. Much to my surprise it was very interesting, especially the ride to and from Pickens Pickens, WV Post Office from either Route 20 or Route 219. You see Pickens WV is in the middle of a valley or hollow as the locals call it and I guess the WVDOT took a dozer and a bunch of dump trucks full of number 3 and 5 surge rock to make the road to and from. Needless to say the wife’s Cadillac thought it was a Dual Sport…make note to self, if we do this trip again next year bring the Dual Sport or the four-wheel drive. All kidding aside, the Maple Syrup Festival was really nice and very interesting; everyone needs to put this on his or her “Bucket List”. Another interesting factoid I learned this winter was the proper storage of the “riding helmet” or in my case “bird house.” I sold my HD Ultra Classic the end of February and just before the fellow picked it up I took one last 25-mile ride to remind myself why I hated the bike so much. When I got home I parked the bike in my pole-building garage and put my helmet on top of my parts cleaning machine. Well, the weather here in VA has warmed up a tad bit and our little feathered How not to store a helmet friends have been busy, some more than others. Hopefully the rest of our membership has been spending quality time in their garage with their trusty steeds performing annual maintenance for this up coming riding season and they have also stored their helmets properly. Speaking of riding, this is going to be a busy year and I hope to see all of the VA & WV membership on at least one ride or event. Till the next time…ride safe, Kurt & Sue Nordstrom Page 4
Western PA Report - by Joe Cyprych, #4665 Hello fellow COGgers. Spring has sprung and were all probably happily back on our bikes again. I hope that I will be seeing some of you at an upcoming ride this year. There are lots to choose from because taking a look at the schedule there is a ride or overnight activity almost every weekend this riding season. Did I say before that I love this club? LOL. Thanks to all in advance for taking the time and effort to put these rides together. I already have my personal ride schedule filled in with quite a few trips planned this year. In addition, we will be holding our Sunday meet greet and rides again and I hope that some of you can attend. I finally broke down and bought a new computer and I think I got all of the addresses from our local COG group email list (ask Steve about my computer knowledge). If you were on it and haven’t received an email from me in a while or would like to be added to the group email I send out about upcoming rides, events or anything that’s going on in our Western PA area. So… come on out this year and meet your old friends and make some new ones - and as always, if you need any info or want to put something together contact myself or Steve and we will help you make it happen. Take care, Joe
Connecticut Report - by Norm & Lorie Walton, #7011 Hi All… The monthly dinner gatherings have continued. Early April we returned to Smokin’ with Chris in Southington, CT, known for decent BBQ and live music. The night we were there also happened to be a Tip-aFirefighter charity event for autism. Dinner took a loooong time to get served up due to the crowd, but the company was good and the libations came quickly. We just added several riding activities to the schedule for the coming months. See the schedule for complete details and other rides in the Connecticut vicinity.
