2014 - Issue #1 - Early Spring
COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director Is it Spring yet??!!?? Like many of you I’m waiting for the bitter cold temperatures and barrage of snow storms to end. The good news is that March is less than 2 weeks away, but remember “In like a lion; out like a lamb.” Since the last issue the NE Staff has gained some exciting new additions. Stephen Strock has accepted the position of being AAD for Central NY, sharing the duties with Rob Romano. I am also pleased to report that Russell Fleming is back on board as AAD for Maryland. Congratulate these guys and be sure to offer your assistance as they work with local members to increase club activities. Have you looked at the Calendar of Events yet? Stuff has been posted online for a while and the list continues to grow. It is even more impressive when it is seen in print in the newsletter. Many thanks to an amazing Northeast Staff—it is these guys & gals who solicit and update the Calendar of Events. It’s a lot of work, but the end result is downright spectacular. This does not mean we stop there and we will continue to still seek members to submit their own activity ideas to the local AAD. There is no such thing as too much of a good thing, especially when additional activities fill voids in the schedule, bring activity closer to members, or provide an opportunity for a member to make a positive impact on COG. All you need to bring along is an idea and enthusiasm, and our staff will help you bring your idea to reality. It really is easier than you would think, and you will have a blast doing it. The early national rally fee discount ends February 28. The Rally HQ hotel is fully booked and they are managing overflow into a neighboring hotel at the same discounted room rate. The national rally committee continues moving forward towards an awesome event. Ted Adcock is diligently plugging away at the Over the Pond (OtP) program and the intent is to bring two travelers over this time. OtP donations program has already begun, and this year you have the option of making your donation via credit card through COG’s secure gateway, PayPal, or by mailing in a check. Ted is also working on the rafting excursion. You can read more about both of these on the rally web site or in the COG forum. Kawasaki and ROK have pledged a significant amount of support this year, as usual listed. Also committed to being at the rally are Klim and No-Mar.

Yeah, we are all tired of the snow & ice that continues to pile up in our neighbourhoods, but Spring is on the way. It’s a great time to do some bike maintenance and plan this years riding! And that’s exactly what the AADs and members have doing—planning up a storm for 2014! The online calendar is filling up with lots of events—some old favorites and some brand news ones as well. I’ve added two extra pages to the Rides & Events Schedule in this issue to
Like to meet new people, find new roads, and have lots of fun? Have some good ideas for riding or social events in your area? Then we have the opportunity for you! The Assistant Area Director (AAD) position for the Hudson Valley, NY region is still open, so we are looking for a new face for this important position. Here’s your chance to make a difference in COG and create some good times in your own neck of the woods. Contact Steve Smith at 203-720-7575 or nead@cog-online.org if you want to learn more about serving as an AAD in NY. Thanks!
accommodate all the planned events—4 pages total! This should get you started on your ride planning, but as always, see the calendar for full details and the latest updates. I’ll be doing a 4 day ride to the COG National in Johnson City, TN and expect to include the Skyline Drive and most of the Blue Ridge Parkway—a relaxed pace for a change with time to see some local attractions along the way. See the Event listing on page 7 and the box on page 10 for more details on the National, and get those reservations made soon!

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 As I write this the NYC area has just been through another snowstorm. I don't know about you folks but I'm about done with the white stuff myself! Had a major roof leak the same weekend of the Javitz show and we haven't been back to normal till just last week, thanks to sheetrock, painting, new rugs, etc. It appears that the latest roof repairs have done the trick though, so time to look forward to the coming season. Have you made your reservations for the national? I have and it looks like rally central will probably be booked solid as you read this. Still rooms to be had at the back up hotel though so book those rooms. You won't want to miss this one folks. I'll try to get a day ride or two in before then so keep your eyes on the forum and calendar for late breaking news. Till then stay warm folks and don't forget the battery tender! - Terry
MA/ME/NH/VT Greg & Tracey Habel #7010/7010A Tracey and I are really excited about 2014 for a number of reasons. There’s our 25th wedding anniversary in June, COG’s 25th Anniversary Silverdammit Rally in June (which we have the honor of being your hospitality leads), and our inaugural NH Fall Rally in Sept. In July Tracey and I will be making a special trip via our 2 bikes along the Lake Ontario coastline through Niagara Falls to visit my Canadian relatives in southern Ontario. This will be our first multi-day ride on separate bikes to which we hope will lead to future long distance motorcycle travel. When we reached out to our area to help us fill the 2014 calendar we were

overwhelmed by the number of responses, now setting our record for annual events in a given year! It sure is great to be supported by so many active and generous members – thank you Mike Benham, Lyle Cooper, Bob Dallon, Ed Dyer, Brian & Andrea Felice, Kevin Martin, Pat & Sher Mulloy, Tom O’Neil, and Bill Sullivan. As you read this article we would have just had our first event of the season, The Start of the Year Social at the Willow Brook Restaurant, Mendon MA. With about 27 people attending we were able to rekindle old friendships, laugh about times past, welcome new member Steve Rice, and talk about the plethora of events in our area for the coming year. Check out the picture of us in the “Boat Room” on Page 2. Speaking of upcoming activities; we are combining forces with CT/RI AAD’s Brian & Andrea Felice to host our first New England Meet & Greet on March 29th in Enfield, CT for lunch. Mike Benham is hosting a Boothbay and Pemaquid Ride in Maine on April 12th, followed by the ever popular Tech Session at Pat and Sherry Mulloy’s in Monson, MA on Saturday April 26th. Please reserve your spot in the garage ASAP by contacting us via email (COG7010@verizon.net) to discuss the work you would like to do and/or need help on. So many bikes, so little time to service! In May, Lyle “Coop” Cooper is hosting a 3 day White Horse Gear Open House/ Roaming Unrally that starts in VT, and ends in NH – May 16th – 18th. Kevin Martin is leading his Nubble Lighthouse ride on May 10th – a great start to spring! June brings something new and exciting. Bob Dallon is hosting a Bike & Stroll and Bag Lunch on June 8th. This combines two of Bob’s passions – Motorcycling and hiking. The introductory event will feature a short ride, followed by a short distance beginner’s level hike to the bag lunch location at the beautiful shore of the Great Bay at Wagon Hill in Durham, NH. Ride to follow hike. What a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors! Numerous events fill up the remainder
of the calendar. Always plenty of opportunity for you and your guests to attend a COG function. Please be sure to register on-line at on the N.E. events calendar at www.cogonline.org , if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. If you have an idea for a ride or are interested in hosting an event, please contact us and we will be glad to help you put it all together! Until next time! - Greg & Tracey
Northeast MD and South Central PA Russell W. Fleming—#599 (Ed. note: Russell has returned as an AAD. Although many of you know him, here is an intro for those that do not.)
You may already know me. I’m a prior NE AAD along with my wife and assistant Martha. After taking a bit of a break we are happy to be back at it again. I started riding motorcycles on the street in 1975. Since then I have logged around 400K miles. In 1990 I bought my first Concours and that’s when Martha and I really started logging miles on a motorcycle. In 1993 I became involved in AMA District 7, became a Road Riding Chairman in 2000, was elected AMA Road Congressman for District 7 in 2002, and was inducted in District 7 Hall of Fame for all the efforts of promotion of AMA events on road and off road. In August 1995 somebody pulled out in front of us and my first Concours was demolished. Two weeks later I rode home a 1995 Concours and we are still riding it today with over 240,000 miles and running strong. My other motorcycle is a 2008 C14 with 40K. I joined COG in October 1990 and some people say I have a low - 599. I became friends with Guy Young and we hit it off real good and started laying out rides in our area. Sitting around campfire and drinking beer we started come up with some of the rides: Chili and Cheese, Chicken

with the twin pipe conversion (a lot of interest in that) and I had my trusty '94 with full Shoodaben treatment (a lot of interest in the "7th gear".) Again for this year Canada Kawasaki supplied a new C14 for display. We extend our thanks to Big Green and particularly Jeff Quilty, Ontario Sales Manager, for their continued support of COG GTA. Which Concours do I ride?
ON (Greater Toronto Area) Dave Perkins #5932 As is to be expected, attendance at the monthly meet & greet drops off over the winter months primarily due to problematic weather and the thought of driving to and from the meeting in a snow storm. We are a hardy lot we Canadians but we ain't nuts! The big event for us over the winter is the Toronto International Motorcycle Super Show. It is held on the first weekend of January at the International Centre near Toronto (Pearson) Airport in Mississauga, just to the west on Toronto. Primarily for clubs, dealers and accessory vendors, there are sections for vintage and custom bikes and for riders to sell their bikes as well. Also, Kawasaki Canada had their manufacturer display at the show for the first time. The show draws riders from all over Ontario and upstate New York. COG GTA has had a booth in the show for over 10 years. We have literature to handout and a contact sheet for followup in an attempt to bring visitors into the COG fold. Local group members supply bikes for folks to sit on. This year Mark Stevenson supplied his '08

CT, RI Brian & Andrea Felice #9125, Greetings RI & CT— Thanks to all who came out to our February 1st Social to kick off the year! We are excited to begin the riding year, once we’re able to get out of our driveway of course! Lots of events have been planned, though not all have made it to the calendar, but will soon! This season will have most of our events on the first weekend of the month, some alternating between RI & CT and as the weather warms, we will be adding rides followed by ICE CREAM to most of our Meet and Greets... Some upcoming events that we’re looking forward to: Sat-March 1st – M&G-Cozy Corner Rest, Durham CT
Craig Scott mans the COG Booth at the Toronto Show
Each year we discover Connie owners unaware of COG; we direct them to the website and ask them to provide their info on the contact sheet for follow-up. Interest in the Connie, new and original, remains high. It is a lot of fun chatting with riders in general about their bikes and riding interests and extolling the virtues of COG. - Dave

Greetings folks! Sorry for the dearth of events in our area, but due to poor weather conditions it has been less than optimal to get rides and events posted up on our calendar. We're going to be having a small Meet & Greet in New Jersey in
We look forward to all of these events where we get to see those that we already enjoy the company of and meet new folks who are just joining or considering. We get to share a nice meal, some ideas and of course a few laughs!! So let the fun begin, we’ll see you all soon! - Brian & Andrea Felice

NY (Central) Rob Romano #10584 As the winter grip appears to have tightened, it seems like Spring is even further away. But soon enough, the snow will melt and we'll all drag our collective ponies out into the sun. Leftover maintenance from the onset of the early winter will be taken care of in driveways and garages. Equipment tucked away in closets, basements or even jammed into top cases and saddle bags will be pulled out and examined. Our "gotta have it" lists will kick into gear as we click through the various websites getting the additional bits and farkles that we just KNOW will make this riding season even better than last year. And with all of this, will come the thoughts of communal riding.

COG Brrrrrr Ride 8-9-10 November 2013
Another excellent Brrrrrr Ride came off at the Natural Bridge environs on this weekend. Over 20 folks came in from Ontario, Florida, and points in between to share in the excellent roads and restaurants. The weather was about perfect for this Brrrrr Ride, the 17th such event since Guy Young first threw it on the COG calendar. That year it snowed and we barely got out of there, but we came back each year. Crazy Old Guys. The Pink Cadillac once again had excellent food and a lot of the same staff was there from last year, always a good sign. The new owners of the KOA were hospitable and provided us with a golf cart full of firewood for Saturday evening’s campfire. That was most appreciated as just a few feet from the fire it was quite cold. Saturday morning arrived rather frosty.
Long Island Meet & Greet—Why We Ride January 30th 2014
Of course we have the Concours National but there is so much more riding to be had in every part of the Northeast and if I may say, there is some great riding in Central NY. Last year was a transitional year for me that I'm still working through. Coming back from an Army deployment, I shifted from being on Active Duty status to "traditional" National Guard finding myself unemployed after 13 years. Moving to a civilian job has been a bit of a challenge and several medical issues with my family have taken up a good bit of my time. With that said, I still firmly believe that the Central NY area has a wealth of great riding opportunities that need to be shared. I have asked fellow COG area member, Stephen Strock to partner with me so we can keep growing the interest and membership. We'll be working together this year to increase the number of gatherings and to plan several area rides. We have rolling hills, twisting valleys, scenic lakes and great state parks to show you! Stay tuned and get ready. - Rob
2014 - Issue #1 – Early Spring
After a stop in Buckhannon, Route 611, the worst “state-maintained” road in the state, proved to be worse yet! In a couple sections, the road and the river bed were indistinguishable, so I chose the higher of the two. We all got through just fine, just a little slow go here. We had lunch in Goshen before riding east on Route 39 to Lexington and back to the KOA. Sunday morning saw some of us riding 100 miles of favorite back roads to arrive at the Ruritan Buckwheat breakfast at Blue Grass, VA. They were excellent, as always. Riding back over US 33 is always a great way to get back into Virginia. It was so good to see so many friends and avid short and long-time COGgers at the Brrrrrr Ride; sorry that the “father” of this ride, Guy Young, couldn’t be there. By the time that you read this we will all be thinking Spring, where are you?! 2014 is shaping up to be an excellent year for riding and for COG! Thanks for being a part of it all. — Pat Sprague
Keeping the frost away! Some folks rode down the Blue Ridge Parkway for a distance to get away from traffic. Some rode over the street route and enjoyed lunch at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant at Paint Bank. Others followed Yer Obed’nt Srvnt over some roads definitely less travelled. An attempt on Nobblet’s Gap Road had us turning around only a mile below where it goes under the BRP; the road had eroded badly. Even a Jeep turned around here and followed us back down.
Rough going at the 2013 Brrrrrr Ride!
On Thursday, January 30th there was a screening of the new movie “Why We Ride” in Garden City, Long Island. What better reason to have a weeknight Meet & Greet? We decided on the Carle Place Diner because it is located directly across the street from the movie theater, and what a good choice it turned out to be. Food was great and service impeccable. We had a group of seven show up for dinner and good conversation prior to the movie. We shared stories about why WE ride. For dinner it was Susan and I, Kevin Remsen and his lovely wife, Richard Wackett, Chris Smith, and David Shore. After dinner, it was off to the movie. David did not purchase a ticket prior to attending and to his dismay; they were not selling them at the box office. Apparently, you must purchase the tickets on-line. As Susan and I entered the theater, the usher told us, “Theater 7” and did not even ask to see our tickets. Knowing David did not have a ticket, I waited in the lobby for him as Susan and Chris went up to secure seven seats for our group. As David came in, he told me he couldn’t buy a ticket and was going to go. I told him I had his ticket, not to worry about it and he walked right in. Free movie night for Dave. Awesome! For anyone who has not seen this movie, make it your mission to see it. Speaking for my wife and I, we loved it! The film covers all types of riding, from dirt to asphalt, track to motocross. For anyone that enjoys riding, this film is for you. I am really enjoying the group we have going here on Long Island. Going to be a great year! - Roger and Susan
