2014 - Issue #2 - Spring!
COGnitions Random thoughts and ramblings from your Area Director The crazy long, cold, snowy winter seems never-ending. Last weekend we got a tease of upper 70 temps, and then like a bad April Fools joke a day later there was a 40 degree drop and we woke up to snow, sleet, ice. I’m ready for change. Sing along on this George Harrison/Beatles song for some positive thinking: “Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here. Here comes the sun, here comes the sun. And I say it's all right. Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces. Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here. Here comes the sun, here comes the sun. And I say it's all right.”
Hopefully everyone is charged up about the great calendar of events the Northeast Area has lined up for 2014. I know I am. The AADs & activity hosts have really outdone themselves and deserve major kudos for the diverse activities in all corners of our the northeast. Among all the other activities we will have two Fall rallies this year. One in WV and one NH. Although COG has grown to have a strong online presence, these activities are our cornerstone and where the club shines brightest. At its roots, COG is a social organization and nothing beats the personal interaction among friends or friends you have not met yet. This is a perfect segue into welcoming the new members who have joined recently. My best advice to you is to get out to a few activities. The National Rally is less than 2 months away. Make plans to be there. Things are shaping up to be a special event for COG’s 25th Anniversary. Ken Ford secured actor Perry King to be the keynote speaker. Perry is an active on & off-road rider and will talk about some of his favorite riding adventures, as well as be riding with us during the week. Rob Dingman will be there to talk about FIM, and Maggie McNally and Sue Slate will be at the women’s breakfast. There will be time on the schedule for a Northeast Area meet & greet—check the rally schedule when you arrive for details. As a special treat we will have some on site vendors. As of now I can tell you that a Kawasaki demo truck, No-Mar, Klim, Shad, and HVMP will be on-site. No-Mar will be doing tire installs and demonstrating their tire changers. If you will need tires, they are taking pre-orders to make sure what you need will be on-hand. Info has been posted in the forum. COG Northeast has great members and a dedicated leadership staff. These gals & guys do one heck of a job to make the Northeast run so smooth. It just keeps getting better. Tim Steele & Glenn Harriman have joined the staff as AADs for VA and WV to assist Pat Sprague and transition until his retirement from the position at year’s end.

Tim Anderson #9470 Spring is here! Warm sun and nicer days are a welcome change, and I’ve been back out enjoying them. Just a few local rides so far and daily commuting when possible, but its great to back on the bike. As Steve noted, the calendar is bursting with COG events this year—I’ve added even a few more events with this issue that recently were posted to the online calendar. Page 4 has details on a new Fall Rally and a paper registration form
Like to meet new people, find new roads, and have lots of fun? Have some good ideas for riding or social events in your area? Then we have the opportunity for you! The Assistant Area Director (AAD) position for the Hudson Valley, NY region is still open, so we are looking for a new face for this important position. Here’s your chance to make a difference in COG and create some good times in your own neck of the woods. Contact Steve Smith at 203-720-7575 or nead@cog-online.org if you want to learn more about serving as an AAD in NY. Thanks!
you use if needed. So get your personal ride schedules out and fill them up with the events of your choice. As always, see the calendar for full details and the latest updates. I’m looking forward to some longer rides to fully remove the winter cobwebs and to try out some new farkles that I’ve installed recently. Got to have everything just right for the big ride to the COG National in Johnson City, TN!

News from your Assistant Area Directors (complete list of AADs on back page) NY/NJ Metro Area Terry Faherty #792 Well it's finally over folks… well pretty much… well almost? This winter was a tough one but it's gotta end sooner or later! I just finished my beginning of season cycle chores and looking forward to the coming season. I'm trying to save my vacation days for the upcoming national so my spring plans, Rally wise, are a bit slim. That means if I want to ride it'll most likely be a day ride so keep your eyes on the forum and the calendar. I haven't had a ride through north Jersey in quite a while and it makes for a nice day. I'm caging up to Massachusetts with the SO to attend the tech day/swap meet on April 25th. Figure they need someone to abuse and make food runs! All sugar packets will be checked at the door… you know who you are! As of now I will probably be attending Americade but it will be a long weekend, arriving Wednesday night and leaving Sunday. Feel free to drop me a line if you'll be in town and we'll try to put something together. The big happening of course is the National. Scott Sorger, his lovely bride and I will be heading out the Saturday morning before and stopping off halfway. Anyone interested in joining up with us, give me a holler. I could use a roomie for the stopover going south and coming back home. I'm already spoken for at the rally though. See you on the road. - Terry ON (Eastern) Richard Beaudoin #9318 Well here we go! Another biking season is upon us, well some of us. Old man winter is taking his time leaving Ontario. On the bright side, it has given me a chance to do lots of maintenance to the bikes so there is nothing out of the ordinary to do getting ready for the National. The
2014 - Issue #2 – Spring!
days are counting down fast and I’m sure there is route planning going on for the GPSs. This winter gave me a chance to pull reports for Eastern Ontario listing members and forum subscribers, expired and current. Out of 37 forum members, I had a response from 7 showing interest in rides. I also had 9 members respond to my email and several are going to the National. At the request of forum member Stan Tibben, we set up a brunch and had 7 people come out. Bob Patroller from Canton, NY also headed North to join us. We had a follow up a couple weeks later and another good turnout. Jamie Carins from Belleville came down with his family and tied in a family shopping day. It was great seeing the interest in the Eastern area! I want to encourage Eastern Ontario and Northern NY area riders to suggest rides—I would like to meet up for lunch or have company. I’d be glad to post your ideas on the event calendar. We can all put it up in the forum. We all know some good roads and good eats in our local travels. With our daily lives and busy work schedules it’s not always easy making a lot of rides but if we get more involved posting there will be more choices for all. I can’t wait to have the opportunity to meet more riders and do some border hopping. Lastly, I’d just like to comment on the absence of riding all winter and the road conditions. There’s lots of sand and fine gravel on the back roads as well missing pavement and pot holes. We all know this but sometimes forget it can be around the next corner. Having said that how are your braking skills and slow speed maneuvering? If you can find a clean parking lot and place and some markers you have a great chance to give yourself a little warm up feeling out your brakes and making some turns or emergency avoidance drills. It sure is a confidence booster and reaction time improver. Practice makes almost perfect. Keep those bad habits from becoming normal use. I just want to welcome everyone to the 2014 riding season. Let’s make it a safe and enjoyable one and we’ll see you in the twisties. —Rich
MA/ME/NH/VT Greg & Tracey Habel #7010/7010A OK, like all of you, I am eagerly awaiting the end of this never-ending winter! Let’s get this party going! We recently cohosted our first ever combined NE meet & greet with Brian & Andrea Felice at Angelina’s in Enfield, CT, and had 24 people in attendance. Good food and lots of talk about the upcoming season with people making plans for the National and getting excited about upcoming events. I think this could turn into an annual event- whad’ya say Brian & Andrea, can we do this again soon? The first ride of the season was led by Mike Benham up to Boothbay Maine & Pemaquid Peninsula, on Saturday, April 12th. Next we are gearing up for our annual Tech Session in Monson, MA, on Saturday, April 26th. We still have a little room left in the garage for a few small jobs, so if you need work, you better sign up quick. If you need tires this is the time to take care of them! Please register for the event so we can have an accurate headcount for food. This is one of our favorite events of the year; we love how it shows off the great camaraderie in COG. Saturday, May 10th Kevin Martin will be hosting his Nubble Lighthouse ride in Maine which is always a good time. The weekend of May 16th to 18th will be Lyle Cooper’s Whitehorse Gear rolling un-rally weekend. This will be a great weekend starting in Brattleboro, VT, then heading to North Conway, NH on Saturday morning via a scenic ride up to the Whitehorse Gear Open House for some shopping and a free lunch. Perfect timing for those who may need a few things for the National! So join us for the whole weekend or just a day. June will start out with a new item Bob Dallon will be hosting a Bike & Stroll with a bag lunch picnic on Sunday, June 8th. We’ll start out in Windham, NH and take a nice ride to the Wagon Hill Farm in Durham where there will be a short hike and lunch on the shores of the Great Bay. Join us! Greg & I have also completed the final arrangements for our first official rally.

Northeast MD and South Central PA Russell W. Fleming #599 For my first ride back as the new AAD for the MD area, it was great to have such a good turnout for the Crab Cake Ride. There were 30 motorcycles, 17 COG members and 13 friends of COG. I have to give the credit to Simon Richardson for hosting
and organizing this excellent ride. Simon has also volunteered to host the Crab Cake Ride in 2015 down in Southern Maryland. Please check out his full ride report on page 5. Thanks Simon! Please check the COG calendar and come on down to join one of the rides that I have put together called Sport Touring Camaraderie Rides that are setup to welcome all motorcyclists for a day of fun. If you want a mini rally come to the North South Rally which will be held this year in July. I’m also trying something new this year - a Meet & Greet. The first one is on May 13th at a great steak house and the second one is on August 4th at Wildhog BBQ, the best BBQ in a 5 state area. Check out the Event listing on page 8 for details.

Concours Owners Group NORTHEAST AREA NEWS
Event Reports 2014 COG Crab Cake Ride Report by Simon Richardson, COG #11014 The plans to hold the 2014 Crab Cake Ride in Southern Maryland were conceived at Russ Fleming’s place back in June 2013. This was the first COG Crab Cake Ride held in Southern Maryland. It was held on March 22nd, starting at Lenny’s Restaurant in California, MD and finishing at Dennis Point Marina & Campground in Drayden, MD. Just a few days prior to this ride, six inches of snow blanketed Southern Maryland. One would be crazy to think that anyone would be enjoying a spring motorcycle ride this weekend and tent camping! Well, we sure got lucky as Mother Nature blessed us with gorgeous weather for what turned out to be an excellent day for a motorcycle ride. Meet and Greet As I pulled Connie out of the garage on Saturday morning it was overcast and the heavens looked very gloomy, but the forecast for a warm spring day was in the making which I anticipated a more positive turnout than earlier in the week. I headed to Lenny’s Restaurant to meet and greet the riders just before 10am. I was in awe to see a dozen or so bikes already lined up in the parking lot. After shaking many hands and forgetting more names than I could remember (I will bring sticky name tags next time, just kidding!) the group began to grow. Locals came out to stare like UFOs had landed. By the time we sat down for breakfast there were 29 bikes in the parking lot, then Michelle and a couple of others arrived, that made it 30 plus bikes. WOW! Russ passed round the sign-in sheet and collected headcount for dinner. The food was great and the owner offered to open earlier next time if we decided to do this again. After breakfast, we suited up and split into small groups. I had had a mystery flat tire problem in the morning so I was more than pleased to ride with Tim who had a pump in his tool kit. We headed up
2014 - Issue #2 – Spring!
the road with six in the first group out. The Ride The 140 mile route was broken into three legs. The first leg meandered northbound featuring scenic back country roads on the east side of St Mary’s County. Attractions along the way included Greenwell State Park, Sotterley Tobacco Plantation and multiple sea level views of the Patuxent River. After crossing briefly into Charles County, the ride headed east over the Benedict Bridge into Calvert County, named after Lord Calvert of Baltimore. This brought the ride to end of the first leg on Stoakley Road in the heart of Prince Frederick, Maryland. Fifty-five miles in the bag. The second stint meandered southwards along the westerly back roads of Calvert County. Some of the best riding curves in Southern Maryland makes this leg an exciting part of the ride, especially if you like twisty turns, and who doesn’t? Attractions along the way; Running Hare Winery, Battle Creek Cyprus Swamp, Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, and Solomon’s Island Winery to name a few. Before leaving Calvert County the ride detoured to Solomon’s Island, which is a very popular tourist attraction in the summer. With the balmy temperatures it was packed with tourists. After cruising the strip along Solomon’s Island the ride traveled over the Thomas Johnson Bridge back into St. Mary’s County. The intersection at Routes 4 and 235 brings the second leg to an end. Ninety miles completed. The final leg headed south through the busy towns of California and Lexington Park and on to Point lookout State Park, home of a Civil War prison. Attractions along the way to Point Lookout include; Naval Air Station Patuxent River Air Museum, Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery, Point Lookout Lighthouse and of course, Scotland (pop. 323). Point Lookout is the most southern point of the western shore in Maryland and is a poplar place for recreational fishermen and beach/picnic goers. The Patuxent and Potomac Rivers come together at Point Lookout and collectively flow into the Chesapeake
Bay and out to the Atlantic Ocean. After Point Lookout the ride returns north on Route 5 passing through, yeah “Scotland” and Historic St. Mary’s City which was the first capitol of Maryland founded March 27th 1634. St. Mary’s City is also the home of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a liberal Arts learning institute and one of two Public Honors Colleges in the United States. Almost there, the ride continues northwest to Great Mills then turns sharp south towards Dennis Point Marina and Campground in Drayden, MD. End of the ride 140’ish miles completed. This route was created by Simon Richardson. The Ruddy Ducks A group dinner was planned at the Ruddy Duck Seafood & Alehouse in St. Georges Island, MD. It was a 10 mile scoot over to the restaurant. A table was reserved for 22 appetites. Ironically, those who chose to use Garmin or Google to locate the restaurant may have ended up at the Ruddy Duck in Solomon’s Island some 18 miles away. I wonder why there was an empty table. No worries! The food and hospitality were awesome. After dinner everyone congregated at a campfire fueled by logs donated by some very friendly local weekend campers. The stars shone brightly in the night sky. As the hours ticked by, conversations filled the air as personal stories were shared. Now and then a gust of wind would fill our eyes with smoke. Oh how I love to go camping! For those tent camping it was a bit nippy to say the least, but it didn’t take anything away from the event. The friendly local camper Miss Pat brought coffee, again, to warm us up. After striking camp, almost everyone headed to Linda’s café for a hearty breakfast before heading home. All in all, a great turnout and a wonderful weekend. I hope we can have another ride here in Southern Maryland soon as there is plenty of unchartered asphalt yet to conquer.
