2016 - Issue #4
COGnitions How can it be September already??!! Summer is fading in the rear view mirrors rapidly and autumn is rapidly approaching. By the time you read this the dog days of summer will be behind us and we will be enjoying cool, crisp riding weather. Get out and enjoy one of the activities on the COG NE calendar during the closing months of the year and before the snow arrives. I would like to extend a hearty welcome to our newest members of COG NE Area. Each issue we publish a new member list with the hopes that other member near them will consider reaching out to introduce yourself Steve Smith #3184 or invite them to join you at the next club activity or for a ride. New member contact info can be looked up in the online Members List or you can contact an AAD or me for assistance. Here is a quick glance at current COG Northeast membership statistics: 575 members; 188 Associate Members; and 489 Forum Subscribers. As you may have read in the last Concourier, as the year winds down we find ourselves in COG election season. As a reminder, the club’s Executive Board consists on the Executive Director and 6 Area Directors who serve a two year term. During the election process Area Directors are nominated and elected by the members of the area they represent. We will not have an election as the NE Area Director term is not up until next year. The Executive Director is nominated and elected by the Area Directors. However, I feel it is important members know they may participate in the selection process by sending nomination recommendations or their feedback on candidates and the incumbent. Over the past couple of months I managed to get to a few club activities in between work and other commitments. In early August Greg & Lisa Mitchell hosted a cook-out at their home in northern Connecticut. Greg planned and led a ride in the morning. More on that elsewhere in this issue. I just returned home from the NE Fall Rally hosted by Kevin Martin with assistance from AADs Greg and Tracey Habel in Northeast Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island. For those who have never been there Kevin described it best… “Mt. Desert Island is the home of Bar Harbor on the northeast coast, and Northeast Harbor at the southern corner of the island. Don’t try to figure it out, this is Maine. If you ask for directions around in Maine, the locals will just tell you: You-can’t-get-there-from-here!” Even for being a bit off the beaten path the rally drew a very nice size group of nearly 50 attendees. The event was well organized and ran like clockwork. Kudos to the rally team.

The motel, rooms, and staff were impeccable. The food at the Tan Turtle, including the incredible group banquet meal was fantastic. The “Mrs” gave both a high rating. Although Friday was a raining day, it did not dampen anyone’s spirit. A few hearty souls ventured out on two wheels, while a few groups decided to take advantage of the free bus shuttle system that services the nearby area including Northeast Harbor, Bar Harbor, and Acadia NP. We managed to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park too. It was a first for us. We even got up early Saturday to watch the sunrise from the Cadillac Mountain summit. As we head toward winter, this is a good time for you to consider ideas for 2017 activities. Start small with a meet & greet or other day activity. The AADs and I can help you bring your ideas to reality. Just ask. Until next time, ride safe

Editor’s Corner I would like to put in a good word for my AMA membership and their towing benefit. I got a flat on the high way (on the way to Greg Mitchell’s event in August). Wayne and I pulled off 495 at the next Maryann Geiser #4627A exit and he was able to successfully plug the tire, but when we filled it with air, it was obvious that the tire was damaged and not safe for further travel. A call to the AMA Roadside Assistance
number brought out a driver with a truck and enclosed trailer who knew how to handle a motorcycle. He loaded up the bike, secured it and brought it the 20 or so miles back to our house where we were better able to handle the replacement. All of this was included in our membership. I feel better knowing that this type of assistance was handled professionally with someone who knows and understands the needs of motorcyclists. We’ve got a great issue here with lots of tales travels and meetings, and new events even though the season may be winding down for many of us. I want to thank everybody who contributed articles and pictures for this newsletter. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Maryland/South Central PA The Left Right Up Down Meet, Greet, and Eat on August 28th was a well planned event, not so much because the new AAD, but because of the deep roots and leg work previously done by Greg Puterbaugh Russell Flemming. #6163 Even though Russell stepped down, it will be hard for him to keep his finger out of the pie, which is a good thing for COG! We ran an awesome route, and as usual Steve Rutter #9715 it lived up to the billing as the finest roads in in PA and MD. The turnout was tremendous with too many bikes to count since they wrapped around three sides of the restaurant. Slowly everyone went out in small groups to do the 140 mile ride with temps reaching into a bearable mid-eighties. The ride, besides grins, featured twisties, but in addition to left and right, they also rolled up an down, to give a third dimension and occasional airborne surprise. The ride ended at the Misty Meadow Farm Creamery in Smithsburg MD for some delicious ice cream.
in Manchester, MD to enjoy hundreds of the photos that he and his brother Ronny took on their recent Alaskan adventure. Beautiful landscapes, wildlife shots, and local color were displayed as a slide show on a couple of TV's. Among the attendees were many COG members, including past club president Guy Young, who rode his C10 up from Richmond. Also in attendance were dozens of family, friends, and well-wishers. As always at Russell's place, good company, good food, good time.
In August, I experienced my first valve check on my C-14 which was done at the dealer. While I was there, plugs were done, radiator was flushed and throttle bodies were synched. To my surprise, all valves were within specs. I'm not going to lie, it was pricey but I was treated fairly and I noticed a slight improvement in bike performance. I was dreading the whole process since I was used to doing my valve adjustments on my C-10 but I didn't want to take any chances with my C-14 since it's still under warranty. While I attended the yearly Wharf Rat

Atlantic Canada (NS, NB, PEI) This summer in Atlantic Canada has been a hot and dry one, especially in Nova Scotia. So much so, as I type this there are still water bans in several communities. But on the flip side, Claude Doucet #9011 we've had some spectacular riding weather.
Rally in Digby Nova Scotia, I had an impromptu meet with a fellow COG member which was staying at the same camping spot as me. It was funny coincidence since my buddy kept saying that his friend was riding in from Moncton and owned a lime green sport touring bike. After a few more clues, I figured that it had be Bikersuzzz from Moncton. I heard about other Concours riders being there but we didn't cross paths, maybe a good opportunity for next year.
Thanks to everyone for coming out. - Steve On Sat., Sept. 24th, former AAD, Russell Fleming, hosted a gathering at his place

There was good attendance at the Fall Meet and Greet in Moncton NB in late September. Nine riders arrived on a cool Fall day, a combination of COG members, Forum Subscribers and a guest. It was nice to see some many Connies at one place, pretty rare sight in Atlantic Canada. We had 5 riders from PEI, 2 from Nova Scotia and 3 from New Brunswick. We had some nice conversations over coffee and lunch then headed out for a nice 120km (75 mi) Fall ride around some back roads.
Overall, it's been a good first season as AAD. I didn't do as much COG events as I wanted but it's definitely a good start and things are looking up. The season isn't over yet but it's definitely winding down and the weather starts to gets wacky around these parts. - Claude
ON (Greater Toronto Area) Greetings from the Great “Hot&Green But Soon To Be White” North. We managed a couple of rides over the course of the summer. In June, Pete Bokkers put Dave Perkins #5932 together a route of two two-hour loops both starting from the Mohawk Inn in Campbellville, the site of our monthly meetings. The first took us south and the second went north

criss-crossing the Niagara Escarpment from top to bottom. The second loop included a run to Belfountaine on the Credit River. This is a short but truly excellent bike road. The second ride was in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s “Ride For The Breath Of Life” program. The “Ride For Marika” was on Sat, Aug 6, starting in Bowmanville, about 50 miles east of Toronto and ending in Bath, just west of Kingston. The Royal Canadian Legion in Bowmanville was the rallying point and they laid on a great breakfast for the riders. This was not a COG event but most of the participants were local COGgers coming out to support a great cause. This was also a send-off for Anton Wallenberg and his granddaughter’s one week trip to New Brunswick in memory of his niece Marika. She died of CF in 2015. The ride raised over $2,200 in pledges and direct donations for CF Canada. And only one rider got lost!! Thanks goodness for cell phones. And our thanks to Peter Jackson for putting the route together once again this year. And we bid farewell to Derek Pugh who retired recently and moved to Ottawa, the nation’s capital. I have passed on his contact info to my counterparts in eastern Ontario. We will miss his wit and 6’9” presence!! He actually makes a Concours look small! Good luck, Derek. I hope our paths cross again soon. It is early days yet but the Toronto International Motorcycle Show is on Jan 6-8, 2017. This will mark the 15th or 16th consecutive year COG GTA has had a booth in the show. I’ll provide more details as the date approaches. We hope some of you in upstate NY and Pa will attend. And finally on a really sad note, Sam Koehler, long time COG member and Connie owner, passed away late August after a short illness. Sam owned two C10a and the first C14 in Canada. His friend Brian Jordan read the following eulogy at his service:
Eulogy for Glen (AKA Sam) Koehler, 1933 – 2016. Former COG #381 Sam Koehler, former COG #381 passed away on August 25, 2016 at the age of 83 after a brief illness. Sam had a lifelong love of motorcycles and motorcycling. In the early days, it was Sam and his brother Bud tearing up the local country roads often chased but rarely caught by the local police. When the two brothers started families the wives and children were introduced to the sport. The ‘need for speed’ focused on Bud’s racing career and the families would travel the northeast to flat track motorcycle races. When the racing days wound up, Sam and his wife Rose turned their interest to motorcycle touring and were founding members of the local “Blue Knights” motorcycle club. Sam was an avid Kawasaki enthusiast. He bought a 1970’s vintage 500 triple new that he kept until 2015. Both his 1987 and 1995 Concours saw well over 100,000 km on the clock. Starting in about 2000 he had an annual ‘conversation’ with the Kawasaki reps at the Toronto International Motorcycle show pleading for an update to the venerable C10. He finally got his wish on June 29, 2007 taking delivery of the first C14 in Canada. When Sam was around conversations were always full of laughs and stories spiced by Sam’s sense of humour, quick (Continued on page 5)

wit, and stories of riding adventures gone past. The riding destinations included Alaska, PEI, Newfoundland, Wisconsin, Georgia, and many Virginias. There were at least 16 trips to Russell Fleming’s North / South get together. Sam’s memory was legendary. He could tell you what everyone in the riding group of five had for dinner at that restaurant in Sydney NS in 2000….how many and what kind of beer was purchased in Yorkton Saskatchewan in 1998...he could tell you how much he paid for every bike he bought. And then there were the riding anecdotes….like the bike wobble that turned nasty on a wet steel grated bridge in the Yukon. To quote Sam’s words “You almost saw an old guy go flat on his ass”. (Sam was 65 at the time and way young for his age) Sam was eager to share his motorcycling wisdom. Dozens of bike tires have been changed at home since Sam showed us how… how many times do we hear Sam shouting “NONONO” when we’re thinking about passing a slower vehicle and it’s ‘not quite’ safe. Sam had a saying for those of us approaching retirement. It went “You’ll never look back and say ‘I should have worked more’. Enjoy life while you can and leave time to do the things you love doing. Sam lived up to this saying 100%. Godspeed, Sam….we know you and Rose are out there enjoying a bike ride somewhere on a sunny afternoon! Brian Jordan (Former COG 480) And I will add that it was a pleasure to know Sam and call him friend. That’s it for this report. Remember that wet leaves are like Teflon on the roads so be careful out there and ride safe. - Dave

NY/NJ Metro Area Greetings fellow COGgers! Just returned home from the Fall Rally and what a time it was! Covered just over Terry Faherty #792 1500 miles from Wednesday to Monday. Kevin Martin and Tracey and Greg Habel did an awesome job. Great venue and good food at the banquet at the Tan Turtle Restaurant which was right next door to the hotel. Even the rainy Friday came in handy for a trip into Bar Harbor taking full advantage of the shuttle service in easy walking distance of rally central. Maine made for a great rally location with scenery to die for. Many kudos to our hosts! The riding season is winding down and before you know it the holidays will be upon us. This summer saw some family obligations take up a lot of my time and now my daughter’s marching band competitions start to ramp up. I’d like to sneak in a North Jersey Ramble again if possible some time in late October or early November, but it all depends on her schedule. Keep an eye on the forum and the calendar for late breaking news. Do you know of any great roads or places to gather? Anyone can host an event it doesn’t have to be an officer. Don’t hesitate to contact me or any other officer for help setting up an event. The more folks get involved the more active the area will be. Get involved and keep the Northeast one of the more active regions in COGdom! December will be here before you know it and that means it’s time for our annual Javitz Show Meet and Greet. As usual meet by the Concours at 2:30pm for 3:30 reservations at Tir Na Nog,
Times Square. Details are posted on the calendar and forum. I’ve already registered! We’re trying another venue this time since it’s once again Santa Con in Manhattan and although Reichenbach Hall was okay it was completely overrun. Tir Na Nog may be a bit better since it’s more restaurantish. That’s all for now folks. Enjoy the holidays and see you out there! - Terry
MA, ME, NH, VT Recently I changed my work schedule so that Tracey and I could spend more time together. Greg & Tracey Habel That said, #7010/7010A we’ve had to spend that time on the house and yard plus cherishing moments with our aging parents. It’s all good, and I wouldn’t change it but I do wish we could have ridden more this year. I can’t complain because I know COG friends are just an email/phone call/ rally away. Back in August Kevin Martin held a Berkshires ride with breakfast at Michael’s Bridge Restaurant in Lancaster, MA followed by lunch at the Freight Yard Pub in North Adams (great view of the highest point in MA, Mount Greylock). The fall rally at Kimball Terrace in Northeast Harbor Maine near Acadia was held Thursday Sept 22nd – Sunday Sept 25th and was a great success thanks to the efforts of host Kevin Martin. Although Tracey and I pitched in on the (Continued on page 6)

paperwork, Kevin did all the heavy lifting in making arrangements with the hotel, Tan Turtle for the banquet, ran registration, and created the sample routes. Look for the write-up elsewhere in this issue. Although not on the calendar yet, we are planning an End of Year Social before the year’s out, and then at least one social during the winter. Please give us a hand and host a ride or event. We will guide you through the easy process of putting it together and will announce your event on the calendar/forum/Facebook for you. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net . Please be sure to register on-line at on the N.E. events calendar at www.cog-online.org , if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. Until next time, please cherish everyone you meet, greet them with curiosity and kindness. Life is too short. - Greg & Tracey

East Hudson Valley NY We are just settling in after our return from the Fall Rally in Bar Harbor, ME. We weren’t able to ride the bikes there, so we took the car. This just goes to show that you can have a good time at a COG rally even if Steve Cerutti #6763 you are not riding. Our motto “Come for the bike. Stay for the people” holds true, but in this case it was more like “Come without a bike, but hang out with the people anyway, and you’ll still have a great time”. Many thanks to the rally coordinators, the Habels, Kevin Martin, and all the other people behind the scenes for making the Fall Rally a resounding success. We are approaching some of the best riding here in the Hudson Valley as we ease into autumn. The fall foliage colors have just started to make a timid appearance. There is plenty of time left to come up (or down…it’s all relative) and enjoy the scenery and cool
comfortable fall air. I have been scouting some locations for some meet and greets, so keep an eye on the calendar and expect an announcement soon. We’re not that far away from a blanket of snow (boo… hisss!), so we’ve got to get the all the riding in that we can. I’ve read about a really neat roadside trailer that specializes in smoked meats. How can any kind of smoked meats be bad? I will do some research and see if it’s a viable place for a meet. I just yesterday met a fellow rider out of the blue, as I was sitting on my bike in a parking lot near Great Barrington, MA. He was riding a K1600GT BMW, but said that he had started out on a Connie a few years back, and that he was familiar with COG. He informed me about a really cool motorcycle themed café in Hudson, NY. This place sounds like a must see, with great coffee, pastries, and lunches. Additionally, I will be scouting a location in southern Vermont, as a new regional rally location. As always, if you’re in the area, drop me a line at steveonlineusa@gmail.com, and I just may be able to come out and play. - Steve

Event Reports Connecticut Litchfield Hills Ride & Cook-Out This fun activity was organized by Greg & Lisa Mitchell on Sunday August 7. It was rescheduled from the day before due to bad weather. Greg planned this to be mainly a social activity with a cook -out poolside at their home in Norfolk, CT. Attendees had the choice to meet for a ride first or meet at their house. Greg posted up maps on the calendar and forum for a 50 mile ride. The ride meet spot was a gas station in Thomaston CT, which is the southeast gateway to the Litchfield Hills. Five bikes headed out with Greg leading us through Morris, Litchfield, Goshen, and Cornwall on excellent back roads. In Cornwall we entered Mohawk Mountain State Park and proceeded to ride the park roads to the summit of Mohawk Mountain, where we stopped to take in the wonderful vistas. Headed north again we rode around the base of Music Mountain in Canaan CT. Then we encountered the sections of hard packed dirt road Greg mentioned during the rider briefing earlier, which brought us into Norfolk. A bit more riding and we entered Dennis Hill State Park to check out the unique summit pavilion. From there we rode to Greg & Lisa’s home where we enjoyed their hospitality poolside for a fantastic cook-out. Everyone had a great time. Many thanks to the Mitchells for organizing a terrific activity.

Event Reports (continued from page 6)
Down-East Maine Fall Rally 2016 Review by Greg and Tracey Habel Looking back at the COG calendar it had been about 8 years since COG has hosted a Fall Rally in the beautiful Acadia National Park area. At some point this year Kevin Martin talked over the possibility of us sharing the hosting responsibilities with him (we loved this idea because it takes pressure off of a single person for all the preparations etc). Kevin had the added challenge of having the banquette facility change ownership just weeks before the rally which led to last minute successful negotiations with the new owner. Bravo Kevin! Over 40 people attended, traveling from a near (just a few towns away in Maine) and a far (Quebec, NJ, NY and beyond). Some diehards chose to arrive a day early to get in more of the gorgeous natural beauty of the area. By early Thursday evening most everyone had arrived safely (some with casual reminders of the speed limit from police officers afar). The Tan Turtle hosted our 6pm social with a bounty of delicious appetizers (popcorn shrimp, quiche, blue cheese stuffed bruschetta, and chicken wings). It was so very fine to see old friends, laughing, catching up, and making plans for the weekend. After dinner there were the usual parking lot stogies, chit chat, bike mod discussions, and chuckles into the night. Friday’s rainy weather had given us the opportunity to explore alternatives which led a large portion of the group to utilize the complimentary shuttle service (Island Explorer) running every 30 minutes in and around the island (see photo). Braver souls ventured out for riding between the rain drops. After getting off the shuttle in Bar Harbor we ventured around the local shops and sampled a few of the local “products”. One of the nearby astronomy organizations held an information session in the gazebo in the town park in preparation for the Night Sky event at Cadillac Mountain Saturday evening. After returning to Kimball Terrace for the group photo at 5pm, we made our way to the BBQ banquette. I’ve had plated meals before that barely filled me up, but was delighted to see the very generous portions of ribs, chicken, pulled pork, coleslaw, and beans. Plus cheesecake for dessert! This seemed to be the theme at the Tan Turtle – huge portions! In trying to keep rally costs down we had planned to skip the raffle portion but there were generous donations supplied by Twisted Throttle, Aerostitch, and John Purdy’s custom safety vests. Steve Cerutti of HVMP handed out free economy throttle locks. Saturday’s weather was unmistakably stunning with a chilly start in the 40’s but clear skies, a bit of wind, and highs in the 60’s. Without a doubt, my favorite temperature to ride in. Kevin’s downloadable routes provided many an opportunity to see and ride the area’s best roads. Whether it was over to the auto museum, the roads of Acadia National Park (free for the 100 year celebration), up to Jordan Pond House for their famous popovers, to distant Lubec, or out for a boat ride, everyone came back with smiles. Tracey and I headed to Winter harbor and ended up meeting Kevin, Coop, and Paul at the Pickled Wrinkle in Birch Harbor. Although they were out of their specialty (pickled wrinkles), Tracey and I ordered the wild dulse chips (aka fried seaweed) and were delighted by their crunchy phyllo dough texture. The evening ended with a group taking a stroll to The Colonels Restaurant just down the road in the quaint and quiet town. Sunday morning were the usual goodbyes, safe travels, and promises to reunite once again in COG-Land.

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! We all like to reflect on past COG Northeast activities by looking at photos. 1.
Bring your camera… Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.
2.
Take a picture… or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”
3.
Share them… Include them in a post on the forum thread about the activity you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior.
