We are quickly sliding into the new year. 2017 COG activities are already being prepared and added to the online calendar. This is awesome! You can view a snapshot of activities in this newsletter, or visit the Calendar of Events at the club’s web site: www.cog-online.org Here are just a few of the 2017 activities… In January Dave Perkins and the GTA crew will be hosting a COG booth at the Toronto Int'l Motorcycle Supershow. Steve Cerutti hopes to have details worked out for a Spring Fling in southern Vermont. Terry Faherty announced a spoiler alert that he will be hosting a fall rally. Jason Kaplitz is considering another summer event in Staunton VA. Clyde Watson and Pat Sprague are working up an assortment of rides for the midAtlantic region in the absence of an AAD (hint: we need an AAD here!) This is the type of dedication that reinforces why, as Guy Young says, "the NE area rules!!!" The 2016 COG national elections have completed. There were 4 executive officer positions that expire the end of this year. I anticipate more detailed info will be in the next issue of the Concourier, but are the election result is: Executive Director: Chuck Kimball; SC Area Director: Craig Green; Southwest: Mark Hartman (incumbent); NW Area Director: Tom Vaughn. In addition, SE Area Director Al Norcross has resigned and it’s up to the ED to appoint an interim replacement. No news to report on this at this time. The northeast AD term expires odd years, so this election cycle has no direct effect here. Overall, I feel the management changes the election brought about will be excellent for the health of our club. Contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns regarding the elections, and we can discuss one on one. Another annual season of holiday celebration has pasted. I wish you and yours a very happy holiday, no matter what you celebrated. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa. Wishing you good life, love, and happiness in 2017. A new year is like a blank book, and the pen is in your hands. It’s your chance to write a beautiful story for yourself. Have a healthy and happy New Year.

Editor’s Corner As the year winds down, I want to thank everybody who has contributed to the newsletter. You all make this job easier and make the newsletter look great. Keep those articles, ride reports and pictures coming! The colder weather is here and I’m trying not to complain or be cranky about it—it comes around every year whether I like or not. I am fortunate that we have space in the garage for our bikes so all we do is add some gas stabilizer, and hook them up to the trickle charger so they are ready to go if we have that rare mild day in the middle of the winter. Until then, there are maps to pour over, trips to contemplate and rallies to consider. This year I’ve even got a few farkles on my
wish list, so I may be helping out in the garage some time before the spring. In the mean time, books, maps and the pellet stove make good company while I dream of warmer weather and new pavement. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to you all.

Atlantic Canada (NS, NB, PEI) The weather has officially taken a turn for the worse, I'm now writing from the Great White North. OK it's not that bad but my bike has been in hibernation for a few weeks already and I'm officially Claude Doucet #9011 suffering from cabin fever. I'll just have to grin and bear it and pass the time planning for some great adventures in 2017. On that note, I'm looking forward to the annual motorcycle shows in the region during the winter months. There is the Moncton Motorcycle and ATV show February 10-12 and the Halifax Motorcycle and Powersport Atlantic March 3-5. These shows are a great way to drool over new motorcycle models, buy some gear or farkles and meet up with friends during the hard winter months. Keep an eye on the event calendar, I'll be organizing a get together during these shows so we can shop talk and maybe plan for 2017. I always look forward to the Spring Fling so I'm anxious to hear more details. If I'm lucky I’ll be able to attend again, it's always a great way to kick off my season. 2017 is an important year for Canada, it's our 150th Anniversary and this means there will be events all year long from coast to coast. As part of this, Parks Canada is giving free admission to all National parks, see http:// www.commandesparcs-parksorders.ca/

[Editor’s Note: You don’t have to be a Canadian citizen to take advantage of these passes.] I think this is the perfect opportunity to announce that I'm organizing a summer COG rally from July 10 to July 14 with the main spot being Sydney, Nova Scotia. More details to come soon. I wanted to get the dates out there so people can start planning. Also, if anyone wants to volunteer let me know. Over the 2016 season, I'm glad to report that COG members and Forum subscribers have increased in Atlantic Canada which is quite positive. I'm always open to new ideas so feel free to contact me. Best wishes to all for 2017. - Claude
Greater Toronto Area Once again we have been blessed with good weather this past season. We managed a few day rides this year, one in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Canada in memory of Dave Perkins #5932 Marika Wallenburg, niece of local COGger Anton Wallenburg. This has become an annual event for COG GTA and we are happy to throw our support behind this good cause. While we wait for winter to take its course here in southern Ontario we are prepping for the Toronto International Motorcycle Super Show. It will be held on the weekend of Jan 6-8, 2017, at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont., just west of Toronto. The show is
primarily for bike dealers, accessory vendors, and clubs (who are provided booth space at no charge.) Kawasaki is the only manufacturer to have a display at this show with their full 2017 line-up on display. For at least the 15th consecutive year COG GTA will have a booth in the show with two member’s bikes on display, COG literature and knowledgeable Connie owners to answer questions and spread the word about the bike and COG. Canadian Kawasaki has been contacted to supply a new C14 for display in the booth; as of this writing it is a work in progress. The show draws riders and enthusiasts from all over Ontario and upstate New York. This is a great opportunity to meet riders and talk about bikes. I'll have a full report and pictures for the next newsletter. From all of the members in the GTA, I wish a very Happy Christmas and New Year to all of you and yours in the North East! - Dave
NY/NJ Metro Area Well that's it folks! The season has finally come to a close. For me the Progressive International Motorcycle Show at the Terry Faherty #792 Javitz center in Manhattan is pretty much the final curtain for the year. On Saturday, December 10, we made our pilgrimage to see all the shiny new toys. Scott Sorger and I were there for the doors to open and wouldn't you know it?!? The Yamaha folks were waiting right inside the entrance making the new FZ-10 my first stop. Now the Transformerish styling isn't for everyone but it works for me! It was quite comfortable for my old bones and has a full suite of electronics (Continued on page 4)

including cruise control. Perhaps in two or three more years I might have to visit the local Yamaha dealer. Next stop was the KTM Super Duke GT. It might be even more comfortable than the FZ and includes the latest electronic rider aids plus bags and heated grips. Did I mention it is crazy powerful with the old Super Duke V twin? A bit steep at 20K but everything pretty much comes included as opposed to some other choices out there. I was smitten but I think Scotty was in deep lust. He revisited that bike at least 5 times over the course of the day and put in his contact information to get a test ride come next spring. We spent the morning and afternoon soaking up the moto goodness. I must say vendor wise it was a tad thin this year but I wasn't really looking to make any purchases this year. I escaped with some Jerky Hut Hot Teriyaki as my only booty. Almost bought a t-shirt until I had a vision of my summer closet piled with motorcycle shirts....maybe next

year. By 2pm we were camped out by the C-14 awaiting the attendees for our COG Meet and Greet. At 2:30 having collected all our expected COGgers we then headed over to Tir Na Nog an Irish themed pub near Times Square on 39 St. We ended up with 11 folks total and as an added bonus the place was completely free of drunken Santas, Elves, and assorted Christmas characters as this was again the same day of the Dreaded Santa Con. The food, libations and company made for a fine time. I'm thinking of perhaps setting up another meet and greet over the winter and this looks to be a good spot. It looks like I'll be involved in another rally due to no other victims... uh… volunteers. I will even consider a more...uh....upscale motel option for those who prefer a nicer room. The one we usually use is a tad...."Spartan". Consider this a spoiler alert! I hope you all have a great holiday season and have a Happy New Year! See you in the Spring! Vanilla Bean in CT, no frills camping and ride, bag lunch at the Quabbin Reservoir with more to come from our much appreciated other events planners/hosts. The goal is to get the calendar populated by end of January. This year we’re deciding to give the Tech Session a rest. If anyone wants to host, please contact us. Special thanks to Lorelei Freiler who will be passing along some CT coast riding route suggestions. It reminds me that even if you do not have any interest in leading a ride or hosting an event (per the COG survey less than 10% desire to), you can help increase the event diversity by providing or help plan routes. This type of assistance is much appreciated! Please give us a hand and host a ride or
event. We will guide you through the easy process of putting it together and will announce your event on the calendar/forum/Facebook for you. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to host something, please email us at COG7010@verizon.net. Please be sure to register on-line at on the N.E. events calendar at www.cog-online.org if you plan to attend an event. This will help us to make reservations for lunch and plan accordingly to keep the ride group size at a safe number. Until next time, please cherish everyone you meet, greet them with curiosity and kindness. Life is too short. - Greg & Tracey
In December we hosted an End of Year Social in the Boat Room at the Willowbrook Restaurant in Mendon, MA to which about 20 people attended. During the social we did a year in review, discussed COG news, and received suggestions for events in 2017. The discussion around the COG survey results drew surprised looks in regards to the fact that less than 50% of COG members nationwide attend COG functions. Many of us who attend COG functions consider them to be the key element of COG membership; aka camaraderie. But to that end we also understand that there’s more to the club than events and friendships. For people in the MA/ME/NH/VT area that do not attend events, please feel free to send us an email to COG7010@verizon.net or call (508-4442235) with your suggestions on what we could be doing differently; we would love to ensure your voice is heard. After all you are paying members too! Upcoming events: We’re in the planning stages for the 2017 season but have some tentative events such as – February pot-luck lunch at our house with educational ride videos and paper exercises, March – social, Ride to the

Eastern Ontario Area Yet again another season of biking has passed and I’m already missing being able to get out. I must say Richard Beaudoin #9318 though the start to the season was not so pleasant. With aggressive four wheel drivers with no regard for any one’s safety spoiling several rides. Well, good riding friends and back roads got me over that negative period and back to enjoying the sport. The Spring Fling in Williamsport was an awesome time. Val and I managed a trip to Huntsville Ontario, weaving on our way through the back roads and a relaxed finish through Algonquin park. A beautiful area to bike in and possibly a meet for a weekends event next season. More to follow. We visited Vermont and the Adirondacks in the fall. It’s hard to beat those colors especially riding through smugglers notch and then getting to ride Tracy road. Thanks to Guy for a great day. How does the last ride to your season get to be better? Well you toss it out there that you were looking at the Brr ride in Natural Bridge VA two days before the event and your riding partner says “I’m in.” Temperatures dropped to -5c the Sunday coming home in the early morning ride back but what roads we were on and the great company. Thanks Steve for the great time! I’m not sure if the FJR’s outnumbered the C14’s but four Canadians made the trip. Kurt and Sue hosted a wonderful campfire that all enjoyed.

I’m going to put together a lunch this winter in late January and hope to get a good crowd like last winter. I encourage all of you in the Eastern Ontario are to be proactive and send ideas for a ride or event. Photos and a story for the new letter are most welcome. I haven’t sent anything in lately because all my wiring gets to be about my season and that’s not what I would like to see. It’s about all of you as well. Does anyone have something to offer Eastern Ontario? Let me know. I don’t always have time to set things up and extra hands make light work. Have a safe winter and however you celebrate the holidays, enjoy ! - Rich
Central NJ Area Greetings from Central NJ. Although I have been the AAD for some time now, this is my first submission to the newsletter. I joined COG Nick Palumbo #11073 immediately after purchasing my 1995 C10 in the summer of 2013, after finding the community while researching a fix for a leaky petcock. Once I dove into the forum and learned about hydrolock and SISF (and his valuable YouTube videos), I realized that COG membership was investment that would pay dividends. I didn't realize how much I would soon come to rely on the expertise and resources of the group and its members; on October 12th, 2013 I hit a deer in Northwest NJ which destroyed the front of both the Connie and the deer. I was bruised and battered, but able to walk (limp) away. A week later, when my
insurance company 'totaled' the bike, I opted to purchase her back. After all she had new carbs, tires, and less than 25k miles on the engine! One month later I was on my way home from Connecticut with a hydrolocked 2001 C10 someone had sold to make room for a C14! He was so happy that his bike was going to be resurrected that he gave me a great deal. I can still hear him now; "I didn't know about the hydrolock issue..." I found that interesting because while researching that initial issue with the leaky petcock, the hydrolock issue was literally the first thing I learned about, and addressed. Thanks COG! A few months before my accident my father retired from a career as an engineering consultant. His health was in decline due to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a result of his time fighting with the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam. I have him to thank (blame?) for introducing me to the rewarding challenge of repairing old things instead of buying new ones. I'm retrospect I see he was really just trying to keep me out of trouble by keeping me in the garage. His riding days were growing short as his lungs continued to degrade, but his knowledge and his workshop were vast and that man is a born instructor (not to mention a MacGyver in the garage.) That winter I spent every free Saturday I had with him piecing together my C10, and in March 2014 she started right up on the first try! A recent bachelor's party for a fraternity brother introduced me to several younger brothers who knew I was into riding and saw my bike's progress online. They had tons of questions about buying and restoring used bikes and riding lessons and gear recommendations and back roads and everything else that night that I decided to hook them up with my father via a Facebook group. And that is how Pop's Motorcycle Garage was born! I am 100% certain that the group helped to improve everyone's health as well as return some neglected motorcycles back (Continued on page 7)

to the road. We call it garage therapy. I used the Pop's Motorcycle Garage Facebook page to organize social events, tech days, group rides and even an annual "Oh, Deer" ride! When I noticed that Central NJ was missing an AAD, I contacted Steve Smith and he guided me the rest of the way. That was last autumn. The reason it has taken me so long to post on the forums, write for the newsletter, or organize any rides for COG? Well, on December 7th 2015 my father received a lung transplant! He is doing great, and is back to riding! In June we even took a weekend trip through all of New England, something he and I will forever cherish. This summer he traded in his 1990 Honda Goldwing trike for a brand new CanAm Spyder and has been going strong and racking up miles every week. Just last week he dressed up as Santa (something he's done for about 50 years) and rode over 3 hours in 25°F weather to bring his hand-made sleigh to a Rolling Thunder toy-drive! This time, however, Santa had a new reindeer leading the way. Her name was Connie. If you're a member of the COG Facebook page, you may have seen some pictures. If you're every wondering what it was like to travel with one of the Beatles, go to a Jersey diner on a Saturday morning with someone dressed as Santa Clause! Now that life has settled down a bit, I aim to host some COG rides and tech days, as well as do more forum postings. I need to do some neglected services on my bike, namely replacing the steering head bearings and fork seals. For certain though is a yearly event that is held down the road from my home: The "Annual Gathering of the Nortons" is held at Washington Crossing Park in Washington Crossing, PA. This event is a rolling museum of hundreds of antique motorcycles and enthusiasts and should not be missed. I will post more about it on the COG site and I hope to use it as a foundation for a yearly NJ/PA COG meet and greet and eat and ride! Hope to see you there! - Nick

East Hudson Valley NY Area Mid-December finds us here in the Hudson Valley with colder than average temperatures and intermittently snow-covered ground – not exactly ideal motorcycling conditions, but Steve Cerutti #6763 time for tinkering, prepping, polishing, and watching old motorcycle movies. The bikes are away for good, since the weather has no plans of loosening its grasp. I guess I should wax the skis. Spring will be here before we know it, and to that end, progress is being made to secure a location for our Spring Fling Rally, which will be in Southern Vermont if all goes as planned. More details will emerge after the holidays as planning goes into high gear. Keep an eye on our COG Events Calendar for local rides and meet and greets in your area. Some of these events may be last minute additions. I wish all of you a happy, prosperous, and healthy holiday season.
Event Reports My Favorite Neighborhood Ride October 23, 2016 We assembled nine COGgers and a total of sixteen riders for this first ever “My Favorite Neighborhood” ride. When AAD Greg Puterbaugh pronounces he has favorite roads in his favorite neighborhood, drop what you are doing an ride along! Greg's favorite neighborhood is now ours. The ride started with an eat and greet at the Golden Corral in Hagerstown MD. We had a beautiful sunny fall day to cycle 167 miles on some of the nicest twisty roads you will ever put a lean into. Most of the ride was in scenic Bedford and Fulton Counties in PA. Nearly every rider rode the entire jaunt that ended at the Milky Way Restaurant in Fort Loudoun PA. This is bound to be an annual ride moving forward. Steve Rutter

Reminder: Keep Taking (and Sharing) those Photographs! We all like to reflect on past COG Northeast activities by looking at photos. 1.
Bring your camera… Try to remember to take your camera with you whenever you go on a ride or event. Many people use their phone as their camera. If that’s you, you probably have your camera anyway.
2.
Take a picture… or two or three. You don’t have to be the photojournalist taking hundreds of pictures every time the wheels stop turning, but one or two won’t hurt. As is often found on many forums “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”
3.
Share them… Include them in a post on the forum thread about the activity you’ve attended. Don’t be afraid to start a new thread in the unlikely event that one was not already going prior. If you already use a photo hosting site, use the direct link from the individual photo or the photo album in your message. Alternatively, you can use the “Media” portion of the forum (see the top banner on the forum web page) to upload your photos.
4.
Send good ones to the Concourier and Newsletter editors with a caption or short article. Maybe it will get included.
