COGnitions: Ramblings from the Northeast Area Director

Spring is just around the corner… I’ve been seeing the internet memes a lot lately. If I read it on the internet, it must be true, right? Start preparing the bikes for a terrific COG year with some incredible activities. I recommend reviewing the Ride & Event Schedule in this issue or browse the online Event Calendar on the club web site. There are so many great events already posted I can’t possibly highlight them all here. In absence of a CT AAD, I will quickly plug for 2 upcoming Connecticut activities. FEB 27 is the visit to New England Motorcycle Museum and on Mar 23 is the End of Winter Steve Smith #3184 Connecticut Meet & Greet Lunch. Here are quick reminders of the 2019 rallies… First up is the 2019 Spring Fling Rally. Join us May 16 th - 19th at the recently renovated Best Western Inn @ Hunt’s Landing in Matamoras, PA. Terrific riding! Online registration is open and doing well. Ride through the well-known Hawks Nest and Catskill Mountains and the Delaware Water Gap areas. Book your room before March 1 st to get the discounted rate. Fall Rally 2019 will be at a waterfront motel in Alexandria Bay, NY, September 19th - 22nd. Registration is open and you can book rooms as well. Our summer rally is the COG “Keystone” National Rally in Williamsport PA, July 22nd - 26th where we will celebrate COG’s 30th together. The next Concourier (early March?) will have a brief rally update written end of the year stating that online registration is open, ride routes and GPS are posted to the web, how ordering rally merchandise is different this time and how to order. Also posted online now, thanks to Greg Mitchell, are all the sample rally ride routes sheets and GPS files. The rally web pages also have this information. If you would like to obtain printed paper PA state maps, you can order up to 4 free copies from the PennDOT Sales Store. Find ordering info on this web site: www.penndot.gov/ProjectAndPrograms/Planning/Maps Jason & I just got back after visiting Williamsport the weekend of February 15 th with our significate others. Not quite the Valentines weekend they might have been expecting, but these are the sacrifices we make for all of you. The plan was to meet with hotel and campground staff, and do a bit of tourism, food & beverage recon. Here are the results from the trip… The discounted room rate at Genetti is good Saturday to Saturday, so feel free to extend your stay. The Genetti is rally headquarters, but we also have a limited block of rooms at the Holiday Inn a few blocks away (7 min walk) if overflow space is needed. We have run of house at the Genetti Hotel for our room block, and they are already one-third full. Call soon if you want to get the best selection of rooms. Those who attended spring fling a few years ago recall the Genetti is a historic hotel, built in 1921. Like most historic hotels they have different types of rooms that vary in size. Inquire if you have specific needs. The rooms are clean and well appointed, and the staff friendly and helpful. We stayed in one of the smallest rooms and while it was tight, it had a queen bed, desk, wide screen TV, fridge, and coffee maker. The Genetti Taproom had a nice beer selection on the 12 taps and Jason was quite ecstatic with the $2 happy-hour price. We noticed there are gas grills available at Genetti nearby the pool area. If you are planning on bringing your bikes in a trailer please remember that due to the limited space in the gated Genetti parking lot, trailers must be parked off-site a few blocks away on the Lycoming College campus for $25 donation to the college per trailer/truck pair. Motorcycle towed trailers are small enough to be kept in the parking lot. We visited the Riverside Campground and they seem very accommodating. They have received 5 or 6 bookings. I believe they are holding some river view RV sites for our group. The (Continued on page 8)

Editor’s Corner I’ve been dreaming of riding lately—long curvy stretches of road on new pavement and clear, sunny skies. Literally, riding has been the focus of a lot of my nocturnal dreams. And it’s all been lovely—except that one dream where my bike was stolen. That one was kind of upsetting. I guess it means I’m longing for the snow to melt, the roads to clear, and the temperature to rise a bit so I can hop on the bike and get some wind in my face. In the mean time, Wayne and I have been looking at the calendar and starting to plan the trips and events we will attend. We’ve already booked our room for the Spring Fling and I’m looking forward to riding some of those roads again. I’m also looking forward to the Fall Rally in Alexandria Bay, NY. This is an area we have not explored Maryann Geiser #4627A much and from the details on the COG calendar pages, it looks like a beautiful resort in a gorgeous area. And then there’s the National which is nearly in out back yard. The Genetti is a lovely, historic hotel in the heart of beautiful riding country in PA. If you haven’t had the chance to go to a COG National Rally, it really is worth the effort. I’ve met wonderful people, rode through scenic areas and ate delicious food on every National I’ve attended. In the mean time, stay warm and dream pleasant dreams of riding. Maryann

Metro NY, NJ Well folks the Spring is right around the corner so it's time to start pulling our trusty steeds out of the long Winter's nap and get ready to ride. In the interest of Terry Faherty #792 positive thinking mark your calendars for Saturday, April 13th, for a return to North Jersey and the Catskills. Details will follow on the forum and the COG site. Let's hope the weather cooperates and we can start the season off right. This time I'm looking to have our lunch stop at River Runners Roost right on Rt 97 for some BBQ vittles! May finds us in Matamoras for the Spring Fling; I'm registered and reservations made! Come on out for some good old COG hijinks and tomfoolery. I am planning on attending Americade again this year, whether for the full week or not remains to be seen. I'll post up a day ride for any folks interested online when the plans come together. Looking forward to the National in Williamsport. It's a great little town and the riding in the area is damn fine. Hope to see you folks out there. Ride safe! Terry

snow to shovel and more time to read and dream about motorcycling! Planning for 2019 is underway. Please, please, please contact us to volunteer to Greg & Tracey Habel host a ride or #7010/7010A event. We really loved the diversity from last year – car factory, submarine museum, rides, scrumptious meals, great scenery, and of course great friends new and old. Here’s what we’ve “pulled the pin” on starting in March. Please sign up on www.cog-online.org to let us know you are attending: Sunday, March 3rd, 12 noon- 2 PM– Start of the Year Social at the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson MA. Help us plan upcoming events and of course socialize with COG friends. Sunday March 31st, 12 noon-2 PM – Meet and Greet at Lowells Restaurant in Mendon, MA, followed by a ride to the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret, CT. Saturday April 27th 9-afternoon - NE Spring Tech Session and Gear/Part Swap in Monson, MA, at the home of Pat & Sherry Mulloy. This continues to be a very popular (upwards of 50 attendees) so please sign up (www.cog-online.org) and reserve your spot (see COG Forum) for doing work on your bike. Please note, this is all about learning skills to service your own bike, not a free service event. Our experienced, patient, and often entertaining “staff” will be happy to give you a hand. There’s still time for maintenance projects. Please take care of your bikes so they can continue to bring you enjoyment for years to come. Greg & Tracey

folks up north got much more than we did here at the Mason-Dixon line. Looking ahead to (hopefully) better tomorrows, our first organized ride of the new season, the Crab Cake Ride, goes off on March 24th, starting from three locations, all Greg Puterbaugh #6163 ending at a fine seafood restaurant in Chesapeake City, MD. Tim Traylor will lead a ride from southern Maryland, Steve Rutter will lead a ride from central PA, and Russell Fleming will lead a ride from Hanover, PA. Check the website calendar for details. Then on April 28th the Greg and Russell’s Favorite Roads Ride goes off from the Sheetz in Dillsburg, PA and ends with some excellent BBQ in Shamokin Dam, PA. Again, check the calendar for details. And while you’re at it, register if you plan to attend either ride. And then there’s the Spring Fling, and the National Rally in our own backyard. Happy motorcycling! Greg

E Hudson Valley NY Despite the -20F degree weather we had here recently in the foothills of the Taconic Mountain Range, the mounting intensity of the sun – when it is not being hidden by leaden gray skies – and its daily course across the heavens is hinting at spring. Before we know it, the trees will be budding, and we’ll be thinking about warm sunny days, and endless roads to explore. schedule of NE regional rallies already scheduled for 2019. Check the COG calendar of events, and you will see that we’re going to be revisiting some spectacular places we’ve been to before – Matamoras, PA in Spring, and the National Rally in Williamsport, PA. Additionally we have a new location for the Fall rally in Alexandria Bay, NY, which should be convenient for our maple syrup swilling rabble-rousing brothers and sisters to the north. Bring your passports, or other needed documents, and I’m sure we’ll have some competent guides for some international rides. There will also be boat tours available to explore the history in and around the waterways of this historic St. Lawrence riverside city. Alexandria Bay should prove to be a great destination rally for families, so bring everyone. We will be just past the peak of the tourist season, so we should have a stress free, and enjoyable lesscrowded stay. Get those motorcycles in shape, put down your Facebooks, break out the maps, grab a beverage of your choice,

call your friends, and plan for the upcoming riding season. Register now and book those rooms. I intend to be at all of the aforementioned rallies, and I hope to see you there too. Be safe. Steve

Atlantic Canada The winter weirdness continues. It has been a real yo-yo here in Atlantic Canada, especially in Nova Scotia. We've have some major rainstorms which would have been much worse if it was all snow. I've still managed to get in a quick ride here and there. It's amazing what a quick scoot around Claude Doucet #9011 the neighbourhood will do for your spirit during the dead of winter. The Motorcycle and Powersport Atlantic show in Halifax is just around the corner, March 1st - 3rd, which means spring isn't too far behind. I love the

opportunity to get up close to the new motorcycle offerings then meet up with friends to compare notes. If anyone is in the area for the Halifax show, drop me an email or call and we could meet up. The annual bike Blessing in Truro, NS is also coming fast, this year it's on Saturday May 4th. I'll be posting the event details in the calendar soon. I can't wait to attend the National in Williamsport in July, It's the 30th Anniversary so don't miss it. If you have any ideas for a ride/event or you need help to plan or post an event, let me know. Concours Owners Group NORTHEAST AREA NEWS some of them really scary.

I was looking at the map and saw this big space between San Antonio and El Paso. Time to take advantage of the 85 MPH speed limits. I was on I-10 about 50 miles west of El Paso Texas, heading west. I was forced to stop at a Border Patrol Inspection station! Not at a border - in New Mexico! Pictures were taken of me and my vehicle from the front and back. I was not asked any questions and was sent on my way. This took place 4/28/18, a Saturday at around 11:30 AM. I feel my right against unwarranted

search was violated Traveling on 87 in Arizona I saw the strangest cloud. I was very dark and low in the sky!? I was in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, one of a number of forests in the area. It was on fire! I was stopped and sent to Flagstaff, much higher than Winslow. A quick text message to my brother-in-law told me the tourist trap was not worth an extra 120 miles of super slab riding. Free camping in Flagstaff at 7,275 feet was the first time I was really cold at night. It didn’t help that while breaking camp, I packed my phone and had to un-pack and re-pack! A posting on the Motorcycle Tent Camping Facebook page got hundreds of responses explaining why that happens. On the other hand, it was a free camp site! Still no visit to Arizona would be complete without a stop at Peggy Sue’s Diner!

It didn’t rain, that’s all I cared about. I arrived at my sister’s in Mission Viejo at 5:30, just over 300 miles from the dam. She let me use the shower and the laundry! Just about the best part of the trip, hugging my family and friends. Two nights in a bed, no peanut butter sandwiches, I was getting spoiled! I called this the halfway point, the only way home was to ride. I was going to do this. Called on another childhood friend from Hicksville and we were able to meet on the pier in Santa Monica. campground will allow 2 tents on a site with electric/water and sharing the cost will be cheaper than a primitive tent site. Call the campground direct if you have a question or a specific need. All camping reservations are direct. It is difficult to plan without knowing what sites rally campers will choose. The rally team is seeking a member to act as volunteer camping coordinator. Give me or Jason a call to discuss. We were hoping member response to the rally would be extremely positive and based on present rate of room booking we anticipate a large turnout. We chose to use the Scottish Rite for the Thursday banquet dinner - they can handle a very large rally attendance in one banquet room. We’re working with a local restaurant, Barrell 135, to do the catering. Plan for a 4-block walk to the banquet location; it’s only a 4-minute walk from the Genetti and 6 minutes from Holiday Inn. Bring an umbrella or rain gear in case of inclement weather. Transportation is not included in the rally fee to keep it as low as possible. For those who attended Spring Fling a few years ago remember that breakfast is included with your stay at the Genetti and it is still excellent. Over the weekend Jason & I took one for the team and tried a few restaurants within walking distance to rally central for lunch and dinner. They were terrific and I would recommend any of these. Friday night dinner we planned on going to The Brickyard Restaurant and Ale House as their menu had a good food and beverage selection. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations and it was Valentines weekend. When we got there around 7:30 it was going to be a 45-minute wait. Jason did an about-face and led us out. We decided to check out Ozzie & Mae’s for Mexican/Southwest food and were seated immediately. Dinner was fantastic, and it was all freshly made to order. The owners were seated at the next table over and we struck up a nice conversation. It turns out the restaurant is in an old bank building and the safe was next to our table. Ozzie opened it up to show us the intricate locking mechanism, and inside the safe were cases of Dos Equis. We met up with George Griffith Saturday morning after breakfast for morning recon work and came back to the hotel midday to meet up with the ladies for lunch at Joy Thai Cuisine. All of us agreed we hit another home run there with incredible food and service. I had the best Drunken Noodle dish I’ve ever tasted. I heard good things about Franco’s Lounge when we were at Spring Fling a few years ago, but they were fully booked and they had no room for us as walk-ins. Days before this trip Jason made reservations for Saturday dinner. We all left stuffed and satisfied. Jason and I had the Seafood Fra Diablo and we agreed it was the best meal of the weekend. The house made pasta was wonderful. The brussel sprout veggie accompaniment with Linda’s chicken was tasty and nothing like anything I’ve had before. Coincidentally, a week before this weekend recon mission I received a call from a that day new member, Regis Lucas, who lives in Williamsport. He recently acquired a C10 and while checking out the club learned that the national rally was to be held in his hometown and is already planning on taking time off to attend and help out. We chatted on the phone and made plans to meet up over the weekend at the Genetti. Here’s a photo of a founding COG member with the newest NE member in the Grand Ballroom at the Genetti Hotel. That’s all for now. Ride safe Area Director
