COGnitions: Ramblings from the Northeast Area Director

Many thanks to Sue & Steve Cerutti for organizing and hosting the Northeast Regional Fall Rally at Captain Thomson Resort in Alexandria Bay, NY. Being unable to attend due to other commitments, I was able to live vicariously through the terrific photos and positive comments posted online by attendees. The spectacular weather made the weekend even better. The gas firepit near the pool was a perfect evening gathering spot for rallygoers to socialize. One night they were treated to a spectacular firework Steve Smith #3184 display over the river. The scenic waterfront location and quaint town offered plenty of other things to see and do. Many attendees enjoyed the boat tour and visit to Boldt Castle. The annual Dog Days of Summer weekend August 15-18 was a good way to beat the heat and go ride in the cooler mountains. The past few years the event has been based in Staunton VA, but there is a strong rumor that this activity may move back to West Virginia. The Marlinton Motor Inn is under new ownership and Jason reports they are doing a nice job fixing up the place. There are a few recurring monthly activities like the Bikers Breakfast & Ride on the first Sunday of the month in Ephrata, PA April through October. To the north we have a couple of year-round monthly dinner activities in Ontario. The second Tuesday of the month is the South-Central Ontario Meet & Greet dinner and the third Monday each month is the Greater Toronto Area East Meet & Greet dinner. Here are some upcoming activities from the calendar. There will be a Fall Foliage Ride on October 12th that starts with breakfast in Stow MA. The next C14 Riders & Friends ride will be October 20th – the start locations are Marietta PA and Westminster MD, with everyone meeting at the same lunch destination. The Northern New England End of Year social will be on November 2nd in Hudson MA. The Brrrr Ride will be November 7-10. And the New York Motorcycle Show and COG meet & greet hootenanny will be Saturday, December 7th. Also, pencil in the following dates into your calendars for the spring and fall Northeast Area Regional Rallies of 2020: May14-17 in northern Catskill Mountains NY, and September 18-21 in northern VT. Details for both events will be announced soon. HELP NEEDED!! COG Northeast is seeking members willing to volunteer to help fulfill the club’s goal to provide opportunities to ride and socialize. We need member support to plan and host our activities. Consider being part of the staff as Assistant Area Directors (AAD). This is a key position within the club as these staff members help to set the general “flavor” and “character” of the organization in their local regions. They organize activities or assist other members to do so. Many hands make lighter work, and you can team up with one or more other members as coAADs. It’s all up to you. Contact me if you have interest or questions. Many thanks to Andy Howgego (COG#8265) of Newtown CT. In the past year he organized and hosted several monthly Connecticut meet & greets fall to spring, when it is not his busy season at work. Andy has stepped up again and has planned two fall Connecticut meet & greet activities that were recently added to the event calendar. Andy is wondering if folks who attend would prefer to select a single location instead of moving each meet & greet to a different restaurant. Let me know. In other club news, it is election time in for the next 2-year term of Northeast Area Director. The announcement and nomination form are in this issue, the Concourier magazine, as well as online in the COG forum. That’s all for now – Ride safe,

Editor’s Corner When Wayne hosts a ride, I usually ride sweep because we have a communication system and I can let him know if the group gets separated. I like the view from there. To see a group of bikes swooping through a twisty passage like the connected cars of a roller coaster is like art to me. Or, perhaps, poetry. With that in mind, here is my clumsy attempt at motorcycle poetry.

I hope you all can get some riding in this autumn. The temperature is great for riding, the scenery is gorgeous and all too soon the roads will become less safe for two wheels. Check out the calendar for events. I hope to see you on the road. Maryann

Greetings fellow COGgers! Well it's official, Fall is right around the corner. This is my favorite time of year for riding as the cooler weather rolls in and the colors come to the trees. It also means it's time for our Fall Rally and I'll be heading up to Terry Faherty #792 Alexandria Bay to enjoy some COG hijinks and shenanigans! As I write this departure time is a week away and I'm looking forward to seeing new scenery and new roads. Many thanks to Steve and Sue Cerutti for taking up the reins and making this happen. Weather permitting I'll be taking advantage of one of my weekends off in October to run another North Jersey ramble. Please stay tuned to the forum and check the calendar. Keep in mind that the Progressive International Motorcycle Show comes to town at the Javitz center December 6-8 and as usual I will host an early dinner outing for COGgers on Saturday the 7th. As usual anyone interested just meet by the Concours at 3pm to head out for vittles. Soon we'll be heading down that slippery slope of the holiday season, finding ourselves on January 2nd wondering how we got here! Till then let's get out there and ride! Terry
Eastern Ontario After reading so many of these newsletter from other AADs about “just getting back from a COG rally”, I am happy to say that I have now just returned from my first NE COG rally in Alexandria Bay, NY, and loved it! The trip didn’t start out well for me though, with my bike loaded I headed Derek Pugh #11636 out Thursday morning. I stopped for gas and soon found out I had forgot my wallet (I did remember my passport). Then while returning to get it I ran out of gas…. DOH! A little over an hour later thanks to my fiancé I was on the road again, gassed up and with a wallet. I met up with 6 other COG members from Ontario

and headed to Alexandria Bay. After crossing the US-Canada border (first time for me on a motorcycle) we arrived at Capt. Thompson’s resort to a warm welcome from other COG members already there. Upon checking in I realized I had booked myself into the host resort sister hotel (I missed the original COG block of rooms) a few blocks away… DOH (again)! Went to check in there and found that my reservation had been cancelled by the booking agency even though I was issued a conformation email just 4 days prior! To my relief Capt. Thompson’s staff came to my rescue and found me a room. From there the weekend went on without a hiccup and had an outstanding time. It was great to be able to put faces to many of the names I have heard of and shared emails with. Our Ontario group enjoyed 2 days of local roads and then camp fire conversations on the pool deck with many NE COG members. A big thank you to Steve and Sue putting on an outstanding rally— especially the fireworks at Boldt Castle they arranged for our gathering Friday night. This was my first COG rally but I am already looking forward to my next! The day after the rally was the first day of fall, which sadly leads to our motorcycle hibernation season here in Eastern Ontario so enjoy the fall days and get out and ride! I know I will… as soon as I get rid of this cold! Derek
Greater Toronto The weather in southern Ontario cooperated again this year if you call hot and humid cooperating, that is! I was hoping for a bit of a respite from it at the National in Williamsport but no such luck! The weather was, as they say in Wisconsin, HAAAT! But that did not deter neither me
nor my fellow traveler Pete Fedyzco from enjoying the excellent routes and rides made available and the generally excellent roads provided by the State of Pennsylvania. The only downside for the week was the passing of Tom Taylor due to an unfortunate road accident. Kinda set the tone for the remainder of a really great event. Godspeed, Tom. Next on the agenda was the fall rally in Alexandria Bay, NY. Southern and eastern Ontario and Quebec were well represented with about a dozen riders and passengers arriving for the event. There were not real planned routes as Steve and Sue Cerutti thought it made for a nice destination rally with much to see and do in the town and local environs. Whether by good luck or good planning there happened to be an antique boat show in town with some beautifully maintained and restored pleasure and speed boats from the 20's through to the 6O's. Mahogany hulls and decking were the order in those days with bright brass and stainless fittings. Real works of art. A bunch of us chose to go for rides on Friday and Saturday. Pete Jackson and Pete Bokkers pulled two nice routes together for us from some available maps of the area and off we went. Pete Jackson has some knowledge of the area as he and he wife Deb have sailed into many of the bays and coves of eastern Lake Ontario on their 27 footer. Deb joined us on the Saturday ride and had a lot of fun spending time with us miscreants. On Sunday morning we said or goodbyes to friends old and new. I hope to see everyone at the Spring Fling to be held in NY state. There was also some talk about the 2020 National in Vancouver, WA. It is a long haul from anywhere east of Detroit but I hope to attend. I have blocked the time on my schedule and I hope to coerce some others to join me. It will mean about a month away from home and hearth, but the riding in Washington, Oregon, and southern BC are unequaled. That's it for this quarter. When you are riding take a minute and think of Tom Taylor who can

E Hudson Valley NY The NE Fall Rally in Alexandria Bay, NY has come and gone. We were blessed with beautiful weather, a fantastic venue, and a gathering of fine people. I had a great time, and the almost 50 members in attendance seemed to be grinning from ear to ear all weekend long. We had an amazing ferry tour that took us into Canadian waters, Steve Cerutti #6763 and we learned quite a bit about the history of the region, and feasted upon the wonderful scenery and landmarks. The weather was in the mid-70’s, and the sun never stopped shining. Some of us were in the pool in late September on the border of Canada. How amazing is that? I also particularly enjoyed the nighttime bull sessions around the fire pit with snacks provided by Pat and Sherry Mulloy.
Our rally hosts at the Capt. Thomson’s Resort went out of their way to accommodate our group, and were indispensable in the success of the rally from start to finish. A big thank you also to the affiliated restaurant, Riley’s on the River, who provided us with a hearty and delicious buffet meal for our banquet.
I also want to take the opportunity to thank our sponsors (and industry members) for generously donating door prizes. The sponsors were – in no particular order: Rocketman Hi-

viz vests, Aerostitch, Twisted Throttle, and HVMP Bar End Weights. Thanks to all the members who were able to attend, and Terry Faherty for stepping up to be our AMA referee. Without all of you there is no rally. I was also especially pleased to see that a healthy contingent of Canadian members, decided to cross the border and partake in the event. *** Save the date for the 2020 Spring Fling (May 14-17, 2020) *** Details and the event registration will be posted soon. This year’s location will be in the Windham, NY area in the northern Catskills. There will be great riding in any direction, so scrub in those tires, get your maps ready, and keep an eye on the COG event calendar. This is one even that you’ll want to book early. Additionally, I heard a rumor that the Fall rally is going to be in a really fantastic location that some may be familiar with depending on how long they’ve been around. Ride safe, Steve C.
MA, ME, NH, VT With both of us starting new jobs, Tracey and I had to forgo the NE Fall Rally in Alexandria Bay, NY; however we did follow closely on Facebook. It sure looks like everyone had a great time. Greg & Tracey Habel Thank you Steve #7010/7010A and Sue Cerutti for hosting. We are hopeful we can get time off for the 2020 NE rallies; if not 2021 for sure. Thank you to Wayne and Maryann Geiser for
hosting the Minuteman ride in August through parts of Middlesex and Northern Worcester Counties in MA. We enjoyed a nice brown bag lunch at the Wachusett Reservoir followed by a stop at the Minuteman National Historical Park for a stroll to the North Bridge and the Minuteman statue by Daniel Chester French. Bob Watkins was brave enough to descend and ascend the step reservoir slope; the rest of us pondering the question “Where’s Bob?” which was answered by a huffing and puffing Bob as he ventured back. The ride ended at Great Brook Farm in Carlisle, MA for ice cream and to see the farm animals. This ride reminded me of how much local exploring I have yet to do even though living in MA for over 40 years. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it takes a visit from a distant relative to put me into the local tourist mode; or friends to host a nice ride. Coming up on Saturday October 12th we are hosting a Fall Foliage ride starting in Stow, MA for breakfast, then venturing west to visit the NE Peace Pagoda before stopping for lunch at Bub’s BBQ in Sunderland, MA. Of course we will end the ride with a now traditional stop for ice cream! Please join us on Saturday November 2nd at noon for lunch at the Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA for our annual End of Year Social. As for all the COG events, please help us out to estimate attendance by signing up on www.cog-online.org. Hope to see you there! Greg & Tracey

Having stepped down from the co-AAD position in South Central PA/ MdD this will be my last newsletter submission. It's been a fun ride, and speaking of fun rides, I just got home from one. Russell Fleming invited a young Swedish man(49years old-hey, that's young to Greg Puterbaugh most COGgers) that he #6163 met and rode with in Scandinavia, to a ride in the USA. Russell then put together a nine day tour of the Blue Ridge Mts. and surrounding areas, to which I was lucky enough to be a participant, along with Russell's brother, Ronny, and Bobby Winters. We were joined mid-ride by Cliff Burnette, a COGger from Arkansas, and Russell's spry 77 year old cousin, Tommy, who hails from Georgia. We ran fabulous roads that were named Parkway, Skyway, several that were named for reptiles, and dozens of others with no name that fit in the category of Magnificent Appalachian Twisties. To quote our Swedish guest, it was a HOOT! Kudos to Russell for (Continued on page 8)

Event Reports Russell’s Favorite Roads On Saturday , August 8th, about a dozen bikes showed up in Dillsburg to ride the rescheduled Greg and Russell's Back Yard of Favorite Roads on one of the finest summer days so far. We made the 60 mile trip to Skeeters BBQ Pit in Shamokin Dam in about four hours, taking Russell's 140 mile shortcut that covered many of central PA's finest sport touring roads. Not without incident, though, as we had to stop and pull a bike out of the ditch along the way, but nothing broken, no blood spilled, just some scratches on some plastic. Skeeters provided good food in nice place on a West Bank hill overlooking the Susquehanna River. A good time was had by almost all, and even the newest member of the CDA (Connie Droppers Anonymous) was smiling before heading home. This Mom I believe has an entirely new perception of motorcycle riders. Her sons were fascinated by the machines and she was surprised when Russell let them sit on his bike.
favorites. Saturday one group went to the Cass Scenic Railroad and took the train to Bald Knob. Others did some adventure riding and more took advantage of the cooler temps on the Parkway. We took a group photo Saturday afternoon and I believe everyone but one rider was back in time to join in the fun. Hope to see you next year. Jason Kaplitz
Minuteman Ride The club’s moto, “Join for the bike, stay for the people”, was evident on the Minuteman ride lead by Wayne Geiser on August 18th. Eight bikes and eight riders showed up on 3 Connies, 2 BMWs, a Yamaha, an Indian and a Honda. It doesn’t matter what you ride! The day looked a little iffy. Scattered showers were forecast, but we only saw a few spits of rain the whole day. We rode some nice back roads in eastern MA, many of which even the veteran riders had never seen before. We stopped at the Waschusetts reservoir for a lunch break and paid a visit to the Minuteman statue at the Old North Bridge in Concord. I expected a bit of traffic when we rode past Walden Pond in Concord, but aside from a few pedestrians, the road was clear. One thing that happened on this ride over and over is that traffic stopped for us and let us make a turn as a whole group. This happened at least 4 times where a car stopped traffic to let us continue as a group. I attributed it to good manners and the unexpected good weather of the day. However, in talking with other folks, they contributed it to the Hi-Viz vest Wayne was wearing. Whether it made him more visible, or drivers thought he was part of the law-enforcement community I can’t say. Either way, it made for an enjoyable ride for all. Maryann Geiser

Dog Days Dog Days 2019 is in the books. And it lived up to it's name! It was 92 degrees in downtown Staunton on Saturday. But it was 74 degrees at 3200' elevation on the Blue Ridge Parkway and it was perfect in the Motel Pool! Staunton provided again to be a great location offering everyone many choices of dinner options and adult beverages. There was a lot of riding too! Some riders where in Thursday night so several groups were riding Friday. I took a new member of the club, Mike Anderson from Maryland, and a friend of mine from back home on a nice day ride. We rode some of the Parkway, some of route 56 and a couple of the other well know

Fall is perhaps my favorite time of the year for riding. Heated gear lets you dial in whatever temperature you like. Hot is just hot in the summer, and there is no adjusting that. Fall does pose a significant risk since the forest rats are running across our favorite roads looking for tail, so be careful. In my area of Lancaster County PA, fall also means tractors, harvesting machines, grain spills and extra horse exhaust on the roads. Steve Rutter #9715 Speaking of fall, the Fall Fling at the Capt. Thompson’s Resort in Alexandria Bay far exceeded my expectations. I had never been to that that Thousand Lakes region and it was jaw dropping gorgeous. The group boat ride was well attended and was a great way to tour the scenic islands and million dollar homes. The 3-day antique wooden powerboat show was a huge bonus. The weather for my 1000 plus miles of riding couldn’t have been any more perfect. The resort, banquet, and overall rally was unmatched. Steve and Sue Cerutti run a welloiled operation and do a fantastic job hosting the event! Thanks to
Sailor Rich for showing Dave, Dawn, Richard (Devil Dog), Guy and I around his wonderful Canadian lakes and locks. Mark your calendars for the Sunday, October 20th Kawasaki C14 Riders and Friends Fall ride. This year the ride will start from Westminster MD and the Sheetz in Marietta PA, with both rides ending at the Thirsty Farmer Brew Works in Biglerville, PA. Ride safe! Steve
