COGnitions: Ramblings from the Northeast Area Director This past weekend someone mentioned that Spring is only [almost] a month away. Wow! Let’s hope that Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction is correct. If so, I better get on the ball and wrap up winter bike maintenance. Until spring riding begins, there are a few winter activities on the calendar that you can find on the online Calendar of Events. Watch the forum and Facebook group for updates and information of impromptu activities.

The February 22nd Connecticut Meet & Greet lunch will be at Modern Apizza, one of the top rated New Haven pizza joints. The Start of Year Social at Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA is March 1st. Atlantic Canada members can get a motorcycle fix and attend the COG meet & greet after the Motorcycle and Powersport Show in NS on March 7th. Do not forget the monthly South Central Ontario Meet & Greet Dinner at Red Harp Pub in Acton, ON (2nd Tuesday of month) and the GTA East Meet & Greet dinner at Tartan Tavern in Ashawa, ON (3rd Monday of month). March 21st will be the Connecticut End of Winter Meet & Greet lunch, this year at a new location: Taino Prime Smokehouse in Meriden, CT. T he long running Crab Cake Ride will be March 29th and will once again have 3 starting points in PA and MD. Review the event info for details. The Northeast Area Spring Fling Rally is May 14–17. Registration opened early January and 49 people have signed up to attend so far. This was originally planned as a small rally, with a limited attendance. We blocked the entire hotel for COG, and as of end of January they are fully booked with rally attendees. Based on member interest the host has negotiated holding 20 additional rooms at another motel less than a half mile from rally central and maximum attendance was increased to 80. Check online for details and go to the COG forum for attendees looking to share rooms. Our goal is to keep the rally fee very reasonable, by having an outdoor pizza party in lieu of a formal sit-down banquet. We will be renting a tent, tables, and chairs. The tent will be present for the duration of the rally and will also serve as a gathering/hang-out spot. It doesn’t matter which motel you stay at… register for the event, enjoy some great riding, come hang out with us in the tent, and join us for the pizza party Saturday evening. That’s just the beginning of the season. We hope other members raise their hands to organize additional meet & greets or day rides. Hope to see you at Spring Fling photo courtesy Bob Barbanti #7134

Greetings to all and hope the holidays treated you well! As I write this Super Bowl Sunday is in the rearview mirror and we're careening toward March and better riding weather. It's been mighty mild here in NYC but life has pretty much kept Terry Faherty #792 me off two wheels. Here's hoping the winter stays away for the duration! If you've been keeping tabs on the fast approaching Spring Fling you saw the main hotel was booked within two weeks. Even yours truly is looking for a flop! There's a back up hotel to be announced so be patient. Looks like it'll be a good one!

Next stop for me will be Americade in June, so keep your eyes peeled on the Northeast thread for a possible day ride. Or, if I convince them, a meet and greet at the Sorger compound in scenic Queensbury, NY. For anyone undertaking the trek to the National out west, have a great time and take lots of pictures! That's a phenomenal area for riding; I just wish I had the vacation to do it. The schedule is shaping up quite nicely so if you can, come out and join in and enjoy the fun. Ride safe! Terry

Overall this winter has been average, there's no normal winter anymore here in the Maritimes especially near the coast where I live. But the days are getting longer and the sun is warmer so I can see the light. Since I sold my street and trail last summer, I Claude Doucet #9011 didn't get any rides in this winter. I'm really itching for spring to arrive. Also, I just sent my C14's ECU to get flashed so I’m really getting
excited to start my bike in the spring. The Motorcycle and Powersport Atlantic show in Halifax is just around the corner, March 6th-8th. This year I'm shopping for another street and trail so I'll get the opportunity to get up close to the new motorcycle offerings then meet up with friends to compare notes. Also I am hosting a meet and greet on March 7th so if anyone is in the area for the Halifax show, drop by for a bite to eat and discuss the show. Please register if you plan on attending the meet and greet. The annual bike Blessing in Truro, NS is on Saturday May 2nd this year. I'll be posting the event details in the calendar soon. I can't wait to attend the Spring Rally in Windham, NY May 14th-17th. The Catskills is an area that I haven’t explore much yet so I'm really looking forward to it. If you haven't registered or booked yet, you better get on it. If you have any ideas for a ride/event or you need help to plan or post an event, let me know. Claude

Editor’s Corner Welcome to 2020; a new year, the beginning of a new decade and the opportunity for new adventures. Even though the winter here in my part of the northeast has been reasonably mind, I haven’t even given much thought to taking the bike out. The roads seem to be in very poor shape and still full of sand and gravel. And my driveway has rarely been totally clear of ice. Those are my excuses, anyway. But, every time I enter the garage I let my bike know that she will soon be out and running in the wind. Putting together the calendar for this issue has made me realize how many COG activities are organized by busy people who are passionate about motorcycling and this club. We are fortunate to have them as volunteers and I am appreciate the time, thought and effort they all put in to our organization. Thank you.

MA, ME, NH, VT It’s amazing what a few hours extra a day can do for making plans for the future. After changing from full time employment in mental health to 35 hours a week driving a Greg & Tracey Habel van school bus #7010/7010A with a 3 hour break midday; I find myself able to have time to make healthy meals from scratch, grocery shop, do dishes, and, best of all, plan motorcycle adventures for Tracey and I. For starters, in 2020 it’s a solo late spring VT trip for me, then when early June 2021 rolls around, we’re off to the less touristy parts of western/northern Maine for a week followed by few weeks (or more!) in Nova Scotia following the coast in July. It’s also given me time to coordinate rides on the calendar with Kevin Martin, Lyle Cooper (Coop), Ed Dyer, and new member Roy Noepel from
MA. Thank you all! On January 12th we broke the Parked Motorcycle Syndrome doldrums by having a nice lunch with about 15 members followed by an exhilarating 3 story electric go-kart race at the Apex Entertainment complex in Marlboro, MA. We were glad to see new members Steven Peck, Keith Hamden and his wife attending. Thank you members for suggesting this really fun idea!
Coming up quickly is our Start of the Year Social lunch at the Horseshoe Pub, Hudson MA starting at 12 pm on Sunday March 1st. We are expecting a few new members to be in attendance to share in our common love for motorcycling. In April we have 2 rides scheduled. Saturday April 18th I’m hosting a “Triple State Gallop” ride from southern central MA (breakfast in Upton, MA), into northern RI (stop at a cool old fashion country store), northern CT, then into south western MA for lunch at Steaming Tender in Palmer. Kevin Martin has a “5 Burgers Lunch Ride” on Saturday April 25th “ride leaves Drum Hill for a CCW loop out to Lunenburg, down to Berlin, back east into Lincoln, then North up to Westford for lunch at 5-Guys Burgers to end the ride.” In May so far I am hosting a Meet n Greet lunch in Mendon, MA with a ride to the Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret, CT. That’s Sunday May 3rd. Further details, addresses, times, etc. can all be found on www.cog-online.org on the Northeast Calendar. Tech Session update - we may or may not have a tech session this year. I am in discussions with one of our members to potentially host
late spring or later in the year. Stay tuned. As for all the COG events, please help us out to estimate attendance by signing up on www.cog-online.org or drop us an email, phone -call, text etc. Hope to see you there! Greg & Tracey
Eastern Ontario For this newsletter I normally write about our early February midwinter gathering but… a nasty 4 week head cold through Christmas, a 2 week cruise and sick fiancée upon our return kind of threw my plans off. But worry no more, it has been rescheduled for March 28tj at the Derek Pugh #11636 South Branch Bistro in Kemptville. Please see the COG calendar for details and to book your attendance. The Montréal Motorcycle Show is scheduled for February 28th- March 1st, 2020 at the Montreal Convention Centre. I was unable to attend last year but hope to make the trip this year and if any others are attending let me know; maybe we can get together for some refreshments! Always good to see what’s new on the market and maybe get some farkle idea’s! This winter has been mild compared to last year and hoping that this will bring an early spring and will be riding soon. Unfortunately our condo’s laneway holds its icy grip till the very end so I will not be out too early but that’s ok as I have acquired some nice farkles to install this spring. I got lucky and got a set of used Heli bars and a new set of T-rex tip over bars! For those that can get out early, remember to watch out for the remaining sand/salt on the roads, especially on those corners. Spring pot holes also need to be watched for, they seem to get bigger and bigger every winter! In June I again hope to ride again to Trenton for the third year to meet up with our Southern Ontario COG family at their Tech day, all are welcome. Watch the COG calendar, when they set their date I will set up a ride. As always, if you have an idea for a ride or meet up please suggest it, I would be glad to help. Hope to see you all out on our great roads of Eastern Ontario; I’ll be sure to wave! Derek

Greater Toronto As I write I’m just back from a winter vacation in Curacao and Aruba. It is a wonderful, fulfilling job that has to be done! The Toronto International Motorcycle Super Show, held on January 3-5, is our main activity over the winter. This marks the 22nd+ consecutive year COG GTA had a booth in show. The venue is a huge Dave Perkins #5932 complex near Toronto (Pearson) Airport just northeast of the city called the International Centre, consisting of six major halls covering 500,000 square feet. The show uses five of those halls and about 80+% of the available space. Space is provided free to service clubs, i.e. the Red, White and Blue Knights, and clubs such as ours, all 6 (?!) of the Gold Wing clubs, etc. Kawasaki is the only manufacturer present, the others opting for a show in late February in downtown Toronto.
The booth was a success again this year, well staffed with old timers and newbie’s alike to offer information on the Connie and COG. I had my venerable ’06 on display in the booth. (Sadly, Canadian Kawasaki was unable to source a C14 for us from a local dealer, but that is a good sign, actually!) My thanks go out to all of the staff for their help and to Richard de Jong for setting up the booth. Richard is a long-time member of COG. In addition to setting up the COG booth he is the representative at the show for Americade. In my estimation the show attendance was down this year, I figure by about 5%. Blame a downturn in the sport in general and sporttouring in particular. Tastes are changing to adventure-style bikes and cruisers for some unknown reason. Insurance is also a killer in the GTA in general, scaring off potential new, young riders who are essential for the health and growth of our sport. Nonetheless, interest in Connies new and old is still high. We had 25 people provide their contact info; I have contacted all of them and about 20% have replied. I’ll follow-up with the others over the next week.

We’ll have our annual Tech Day sometime in May or June (the date will be posted to the calendar.) Last years was a lot of fun as we introduced about 6 owners to the fine art of C10 maintenance. Host Pete Jackson led the tutorials, taking a lot of the mystery out of the processes. We even did our first C14, changing the brake and clutch fluids on Jamie Cairns’ 2011. Spring Fling is on our agenda. Four or five of our members from Ontario are planning to attend. We know it will be a great time in the capable hands of Steve and Sue Cerutti. And for the adventurous of you in the GTA and Ontario, I’m planning to attend the National in Vancouver, WA in June. If you want to join me give me a shout. The COG GTA group was forced to find a new venue for our monthly M&Gs starting in December. The Mohawk Inn, our meeting place for the past 10-12 years, closed its restaurant and the adjacent motel effective December 15. The space is being redeveloped as a hotel and conference centre. We knew
this with abundant warning so one of our members, Oliver Knoop, suggested a pub just a bit further north in the town of Acton. We met there for the meetings starting in Dec and it has worked out very well. Once the riding season hits it will be a nice ride for most rather than the hell of the rush hour slab many of us had to endure to get to the meetings. We bid the Mohawk and its staff a fond farewell but as they say change is as good as a rest. Mean spirited groundhogs notwithstanding spring will be with us in no time and with it bike prep for the year ahead. Take it easy on those first rides. Wet sand mixed with road salt is like ball-bearings on Teflon. Ride Safe! E-gards! Dave
South Central PA/MD Did you every dream of moving south so that you could ride yearround? It wouldn’t be as far south as hot Florida, but somewhere around North Carolina, or Tennessee where it’s not too cold in the winter. Or how about Oregon or Washington where it’s temperate most times of the year, Steve Rutter #9715 but rains a lot. Welcome to the winter of 2019-2020. I hope that everyone is sneaking out on those rare dry days and for a ride. The Crab Cake ride is on the COG calendar for March 29th, and once again features 3 starting locations. Russell Fleming will lead a ride out of Manchester, MD. Tim Traylor will lead a ride out of White Plains, MD, picking up riders along the way. I will be leading a ride out of Marietta, PA. will be ending at Schaffer’s Canal House in Chesapeake City MD with lunch starting at around 1:30 PM. We had a great turnout last year. It’s natural to do this, but lets’ mix up the tables this time, since we don’t need to lunch with our riding groups. The Ephrata Bikers Breakfasts will be coming up and are the first Sunday of every month starting in April. They will be posted on the calendar soon. The extended forecast is calling for more of the same wet and warm winter, so enjoy. Steve R.

optional. I can’t thank COG enough (and our AD Steve Smith for going to bat for us) for subsidizing a portion of the expenses. This will help to allow us to keep the registration fee reasonable. If anybody questions why membership dues are important, here is a good reason. The riding is guaranteed to be great (like objectively really top notch). The weather is in whatever deities’ hands you subscribe to. The company is always guaranteed to be interesting, reliable, and gregarious. Keep checking our repository of riding routes. Quite a few have been posted in the official COG library, and there are several more being massaged. I can’t wait to see you there.
I hope we are all having a decent Steve and Sue C. winter. The Farmer’s Almanac with its portent of doom and gloom has been as of late proven wrong – maybe there has been some gloom, but certainly no doom…yet. March storms can be nasty up our way. There is hope in the upcoming seasons though. Spring is approaching with the fervor of a thousand hungry COGGERS storming the banquet table at a regional rally. With Spring on our minds, let us remember that the Northeast region Steve Cerutti #6763 will be hosting the Spring Fling Rally in the Northern Catskills this year from May 14th – 17th. See our official calendar of events and forum posts for more details. Given the smaller numbers of participants that have been showing up for rallies over the last few years, we decided to design a smaller rally. Astoundingly, we fully booked the entire hotel in 2 weeks. That is amazing. This necessitated that we find an alternate lodging location and we did. Sue and I will be at the alternate location, so come join us for breakfast. We wanted to keep rally registration fees low, so we arranged to have a tent brought in to the venue, and we will be served authentic New York pizza from a guy named Nunzio in a pizza party affair – tuxedos Area Director
