COGnitions:

Ramblings from the Northeast Area Director Like the sight of the first robin in the yard, there are signs for me that riding season is upon us. The temperature is warming up, the snow is gone, we have had enough rain to clear away salt and sand from the road surfaces, and early April motorcycle training has begun here in Connecticut. I have been wanting to get out for a ride, but there has been some junk furniture stored in the garage from a winter family room makeover that was blocking access to the bike. I cut up and disposed of all the pieces and finally took my first ride of spring. Last year was pretty much a bust due to almost all club activities being canceled, but now things are looking better. Since the beginning of the year there have been over a dozen Northeast events posted to the online Steve Smith #3184 Calendar, and several have already run. There are day rides, meet & greets, a few virtual social gatherings, and weekend events. Thanks to Jason Kaplitz for posting up a number of northeast weekend events, including one in Ohio that is listed as a north central event. I see this event type becoming more popular that regional rallies as they are simpler to organize since there are no group meals to plan. Decide on a nice riding destination, find a lodging venue you would like to go to, then write up and submit the event to the calendar to invite your COG friends to come along! There’s always room on the calendar for more events. Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were northeast activities to choose from every week during the riding season? All it would take is 3040 of our 300+ northeast members to host just one activity per year. COG is a grass roots type of club and we need the help from our members to plan events. Team up with a nearby COG friend and host something together. “Many hands make light work.” If you would like help getting started to plan a club event, just ask me or one of the AADs. Several members took advantage of one of the virtual “Planning COG Events” webinars that were scheduled over the past months. The feedback from participants has been very favorable. The presentation had its debut here in the Northeast during February. Then it was offered to the board of directors, followed up by a webinar session for all club AADs, and finally two additional webinars were scheduled for all club members on the evenings of April 7 th & 13th. The webinar provides a basic understand of club event planning and how easy it is for any member to plan and host a club event. The presentation describes basic event type examples, the steps to plan and promote an event, the role of the club’s Event Coordinator in assisting members with events, and an easy-to-follow guide for submitting your event to the club’s online calendar. Let me know if you missed the webinars but would like to attend a future session.

The first COG Northeast event of spring was the March 20 th CT Meet & Greet at Denmo’s Drive -In in Southbury, CT. The weather started out on the cold side, but it did warm up slightly by the time we arrived and had lunch. There were 7 attendees on what started out to be a very chilly morning. Two hearty souls, Doug Kitchen and a potential new member, arrived on two wheels. It was nice to see everyone a while after the long, cold winter and be able to chat about spring riding and future NE events. Greg & Tracey Habel hosted their second MA/ME/NH/VT Online Social the evening of March 23rd, and on March 28th Dave Perkins and Derek Pugh hosted an Ontario Zoom Meeting. I attended both and found that the virtual gatherings work well to get folks together when it is not possible due to pandemic restrictions. The conversation was fun as folks talked about life, (Continued on page 2)

Editor’s Corner Spring has sprung with all the usual signs— flowers popping, birds singing, motorcycles revving. While 2020 was not a good motorcycling year for me, 2021 is looking to be more promising. I’ve been out on a few short rides which has been great. With more restrictions being lifted here (sorry to my Canadian friends), and two shots in my arm, I’m feeling better about getting out and about. Maryann Geiser While we’re not totally out of the woods, we #4627A are nearing the clearing. What I told a friend earlier this month, when this is all over, we’re going to have to hold one heckuva celebration! Ride safely! Maryann (Continued from page 1)

motorcycles, and the riding they have done in the past year. Based on the success of the smaller virtual meetings, on April 12th a Northeast wide Virtual Campfire was hosted on Zoom. More than a dozen attended and talked about the upcoming national rally, rides, and other events.

SPRING FLING Weekend is coming up May 20-23. I suspect there may be a few rooms left at the Hotel Vienna, although our room block hold expired at the end of March. If you want to go to this event, call the hotel directly to check on room availability and if you can still get the group rate. The weekend details are posted on the event web page: https://concours.org/event-4118319 The Fall Rally in Stowe, VT is on hold indefinitely until the pandemic restrictions are gone in Vermont. Other event options and destinations are being investigated. Keep an eye on the online event calendar and I hope to have more to report in the next newsletter or email updates. Lastly, there is probably no need to remind anyone that the 2021 national rally will be in Lake Guntersville State Park, AL, June 14-18. If you have not booked lodging or registered, get it done ASAP. If you are seeking to ride there with someone, I suggest making a post on the COG Forum or on Facebook to seek out others, or reach out to COG friends you know are going. Safe travels and have a great time. As always, stay healthy and ride safe.

Host Events, Win Prizes By Steve Smith #3184 NEAD

How would you like to win prizes by hosting club events in 2021? To encourage more Northeast Area members to plan events, I will be digging into the COG Northeast prize chest and rewarding those who host events by automatically entering them into prize drawings for a chance to win. An assortment of prizes are available which includes COG Merchandise (shirts, hats, and maybe a bike cover), Motorcycling related books and prizes provided by Whitehorse Gear before they closed, and a gift certificates from Aerostich and Twisted Throttle. Only full NE COG members are eligible, and NE staff is excluded. There is a limited supply, so get your event on the calendar now! For each event planned and executed, the member will get one entry into the prize pool. Any type of northeast event will qualify - rides, meet & greets, socials, tech days, weekend events, etc. If you need help to get rolling planning an event, please contact me or your local AAD.

Help Needed Bodo Wolters #3999 I am thinking about buying peg lowers for my Connie C-10. I know that Murph sells them, and I would just like to try them out before ordering them. Since my accident in October 2019 I have very well recovered, but my left leg is still resisting a quick uplift like from a stop with the leg down to putting the foot on the peg. It would be best if someone with peg lowers on their C-10 near me could either come by so I try to sit on the bike to see if it’s any better or I could visit them to try it out. I already checked with a few guys here locally and they don’t have peg lowers. Covid note: I have received both COVID vaccine shots as of 4/23. Best regards and thanks in advance, Bodo and Mary Wolters 922 Saint Andrews Drive | Malvern, PA 19355; USA T: +1 610-864-0002 | E: Bodo.Wolters@outlook.com

Metro NY, NJ Greetings fellow COGgers! It seems the weather is taking it's time realizing it's Spring. The NYC area keeps bouncing from high Terry Faherty #792 forties to 60 every few days lately. I have finally confirmed that I'm off for the Spring Fling and I can't wait to get out on the road again and meet up with my fellow NECOG folks. It's been too long! Steve Smith and I have hammered out plans for a Big W run in July with a historical twist. See the calendar with more details. Unfortunately due to my ungodly schedule I haven't been able to attend most of the online meet and greets but they seem to be a popular way to keep connected during these times. Things are looking pretty good so far in my neck of the woods let's hope it continues! Now that more dining options are opening up look to the calendar and forum for more day ride opportunities and don't be bashful, if you have a favorite ride or destination, let us know and we can help put together a ride. Hope to see you out there soon. Stay safe and keep the shiny side up! Terry

Yes, a Harley. Full disclosure: when I was a kid, I fell in love with that bike through movies like Electra Glide in Blue and one of the Dirty Harry movies (drawing a blank on the title). have about the brand. Yet, it has made a huge difference for me. I am again able to do long hours on that motorcycle. The sitting position and floor boards make all the difference for joint comfort in my case. It is nowhere near as fun as the Connie on fast curves, but it has a driver backrest, a comfortable seat and lots of torque. I have been speaking to lots of riders in my age group, and many enjoy both fast bikes and comfy cruisers. There’s nothing wrong with having both kinds, if it lets you enjoy motorcycling for many more years. After all, it’s not what you ride, but how you ride and who you ride with. So don’t be surprised if I show up at a Northeast event riding Blue Thunder (yes, I named it).
