COGnitions:
Ramblings from the Northeast Area Director On the evening of June 23 Linda and I were having dinner at my daughter’s home, when I received heartbreaking news from Dave Fridirici and Jason Kaplitz. Russell Fleming (#599) was involved in a motorcycle crash earlier in the day while leading a ride in Ohio and passed away. We lost a friend, ambassador to motorcycling, and quintessential COGger. He had a significant impact on members in COG, especially here in the Northeast Area. Russ was twice a COG NE AAD throughout his 31 years in the club. He was always there for his fellow COG members and organized many rides and activities; he even opened up his Steve Smith #3184 home to members for the North/ South event. There will be a full article in the coming Concourier magazine, and possibly Backroads Magazine too. Godspeed Russell.
I was reviewing our northeast calendar activities we have had since April, and it is nice to see our event schedule has begun to recover slightly post-pandemic. Restrictions were lifted by end of May in most places in the COG NE Area… except Canada. Not only is the US/Canada border still closed, but Canadians are not supposed to be traveling between provinces. This makes riding in groups and attending COG events very difficult, so there are literally no COG events for them except the virtual ones that were done. That stinks! As the vaccine rollout gains momentum in Canada, I hope our friends from the north will be able to join us for club events very soon. Day rides and weekend getaway events have been the popular activities so far this year. Hopefully, we will begin to see folks coming out to Meet & Greets when we have them. Check out the club’s Event Calendar at www.concours.org for the up-to-date list. The number of activities on the calendar is down from a couple years ago. There’s plenty of room on our Northeast Events Calendar for more events. There is no such thing as too much. I encourage each member to consider hosting an activity. This is a good way to introduce other members to your favorite rides and road-side food spots, and you get to meet other members. It’s a win-win. You do not have to do it yourself. Team up with a nearby COG friend and host something together. Contact me if you need a boost to get rolling. We’re still working on finding a suitable venue with open dates for a 2021 fall rally. Any updates will be sent in an email blast and maybe the next newsletter if the timing works.

Here is something to look forward to next year… Pencil in the dates for the 2022 Spring Fling May 19-22 in Williamsport, PA. You should have received a survey email asking members whether to make Spring Fling a “no-frills” rally or not. No-frills generally means no group banquet planned. Come ride and have a good time, and enjoy the camaraderie in the parking lot. As always, stay healthy and ride safe.

Dog Days Update As I write this on July 14th there are 28 people registered for our Annual Dogs Days weekend in Marlinton WV, August 12-15. I’m hearing rumors that a couple Canadian’s are hoping to jump the border and join in the fun! Back Mountain Road is calling them… The Marlinton Motor Inn reports 16 rooms booked, with more available! Remember you must call direct to book at the COG rate. 304.799.4711
I’ve been told the onsite restaurant is not open due to staffing shortages. The Bar is open and is serving Bar Food. There are many choices a short distance away in town. I’m looking into buying a Charcoal Grill so we can have a “Cook your Steak” night. Stay tuned for more info! So… BOOK THOSE ROOMS and come to the Mountains to escape the heat of the city! Editor’s Corner As a member of the North East staff, I have the privilege of hearing news before many of the rest of the members. I was stunned to hear of Russell Fleming’s death. I’ve been involved with COG for 20 years and have had numerous occasions to interact with Russell at weekend gatherings and other events. I always found Russell to be living large and enjoying life. Even in the face of adversity, Russell knew how to adapt and enjoy. He was a vital part of our COG family and will be dearly missed. Summer is here and riding season is in full bloom (when it’s not pouring rain here.) Everybody seems to be out and about again and not necessarily looking out for motorcycles. Be mindful of the washouts on the road and the distracted drivers behind the wheels. To quote Sgt. Esterhaus, “Let’s be careful out there”.

In Memory of Russell Fleming (COG #599) Many of us were stunned and deeply saddened by the news of Russell’s unfortunate accident that occurred June 23rd. Despite the heartache, I can’t help but think of all of the great things Russell accomplished over the years, and my fond memories of him as I reflect on his life. Russell was a huge presence for many years to the COG community and was a long term Assistant Area Director. Over the years, Russell coordinated countless organized and impromptu motorcycle rides. His motorcycle roots were far and wide and included many riders from the AMA. Many of us can recall Russell spotting a Concours and the “chasing the rider down” so he could talk with them and let them know about the Concours Owners Group. There are so many stories of the good things Russell has done for so many riders over the years. It was not unusual for Russell to promote a ride through COG and putting the event on the COG calendar with an announcement. A typical ride would start with meeting at, for example, Rosie’s Diner at 9 AM. Based on COG, I would expect to see a dozen COG riders, and on that he delivered. What always amazed me was the bikes of all makes and models that extended from the rear of diner, around the sides and to the front. That was how far and wide Russell pulled people together for a common interest. More than one rider has expressed that an era has sadly passed, and we can only hope to keep the traditions that Russell started alive. Those same riders always break into a great story about Russell.
routes a few days before to make sure there wouldn’t be construction or oil and chipped roads to foul up the ride. His efforts in this area were enormous and much appreciated. Russell helped many riders over the year with advice, bike maintenance, GPS questions, and was the smoothest rider around. His head was filled with maps of ALL of the best roads. Everyone will laugh and tell a story of how a distance that was probably only 6 miles away could end up being a 100 mile ride because of riding that great road that only he knew about. He left a huge mark and will be missed. Every time I gear up for a ride, I will always think of Russell. He was a great guy to know and we will miss him dearly. Steve Rutter AAD PA-MD
Perhaps unrecognized by many, putting a ride together took countless hours of his time. Russell started early on mapping out the rides with Martha, and diligently stopping at every turn and logging the mileage. That effort later evolved into plotting rides with Garmin mapping software and then distributing the routes to the riders from a laptop before the ride. Russell would also ride the

Metro NY, NJ Greetings from the NYC Metro area! Hope you're all having better riding than yours truly. Having every other weekend off puts a serious Terry Faherty #792 damper on ride planning. Our new Independence ride is fast approaching on July 17. Here's hoping the weather cooperates and we have an enjoyable day. Steve Smith has put together a new loop celebrating Sybil Ludington's Midnight Ride. At the age of 16 she rode all night to raise the local militias to defend against the British attack on Danbury. Due to the closure of Big W's BBQ, he's found us a new destination for some good grub. I'll be leading a ride from my usual meeting place at Dunkin in White Plains to our rally point where we'll break up into smaller groups for the ride (if necessary). Sounds like a nice day ride with some history mixed in! A fall rally is still in the works and I plan to attend if my work actually allows me to take some of my voluminous time. Man do I miss being retired! I'm hoping to head up to the great white north and do some riding in the Lake George area during my vacation week in August. If it comes to pass I'll post a possible mid week hooky ride while there. Hope you all are enjoying some post Covid hijinks! MA, ME, NH, VT Tracey and I haven’t been doing much motorcycle riding these past months however Greg & Tracey Habel we did get a #7010/7010A chance to go on a solo 3 night trip in late June throughout southern VT with a home base of Willmington, VT. Many of you may remember the massive flooding in the northeast back in the summer of 2011 just 1 week after the COG National in West Dover; 1 town north. Wilmington is one of the towns having a river passing through it’s downtown which rose over 20 feet causing massive damage. It’s been 10 years since then, plus COVID, and we are happy to report that most of those businesses have bounced back. The famous Dot’s Diner located right next to the river was severely damaged when logs stored upstream tore parts of the building away as they careened downstream. Standing on the
bridge looking down into the river almost 20 feet below I find it hard to imagine the river rose that high, but we saw many pictures captured by locals as it occurred. Through the generosity of townspeople via labor and donations, Dots was able to rebuild to which they have increased capacity and kept that old diner look. Thankfully most of the old buildings in the town did not suffer as significant damage and remain standing with business returning to normal. Our Airbnb located right downtown allowed us to walk to dinner at the Maple Leaf Tavern and spend time browsing the shops. Within walking distance was also a really cool liquor store that carried numerous local craft beers for imbibing after our rides. A local bar situated right on the river created fond memories for us as we consumed beers with the locals, shared conversations, and learned how their patronage kept the bar solvent during COVID. Located on the lovely route 100, Wilmington is a great jumping off spot for many adventures throughout New England, upper state New York and beyond. Thank you to Kevin Martin who has been busy hosting rides in the area such as the Pioneer Valley ride and the Kimballs Lunch ride (both in June!), and the Four Aces Ride on July 11th up into Lebanon NH for lunch at The Four Aces Diner followed by delicious ice cream after riding fun roads. Later this month Kevin has a ride on July 24th up into Ludlow Vermont for lunch, then heads south on famous Route 100 and VT Rt-30 into Dummerston and Brattleboro. He’ll cross over the West Dummerston Covered Bridge and take US-5 and Rt-9 through Brattleboro VT, and Keene NH, (Continued on page 5)

Event Reports Pioneer Valley Ride Report My Pioneer Valley Ride consisted of a 200 mile jaunt around western Massachusetts in an area known as the Pioneer Valley. A small group of riders met at Johnson’s Restaurant and Dairy in Groton MA on Saturday June 5th. This is the first time I’ve used Johnson’s as a ride starting location, and I thought it worked out very well. The restaurant was rustic inside, but very clean and the breakfast food was excellent. Three riders joined me for breakfast around 7:30 am, Dave Fazzouli, Bob Watkins, and Bob Petit. After breakfast, the four of us headed west eventually picking up the Mohawk Trail (Rt -2) in Leominster MA. We road the Mohawk Trail for the next 50 plus miles, stopping in Greenfield MA at the Rt-2 McDonalds to meet the rest of the group who signed up for the ride. There we were joined by Paul Medeiros, Ed Dyer, Richard Salkind, all from MA, and James Malanga who rode up from Connecticut to join our ride. There was a 9th rider who stopped by to say hello, but unfortunately I don’t recall his name. Sorry for that. We continued west on the Mohawk Trail and other great western MA routes, like 8A, 112, and 116. 8A in particular is one of my favorite MA roads, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of it had been recently repaved. Later when we turned onto 116 in Ashfield, we were met by a police road block and detour. Little did I know that the required detour had no directions on how to get back onto Rt-116 South, so I opted to get lost instead.
Sure enough, Bob and Ed found us at a gas station further down the road. The other guys headed home. The remaining four of us road back into Townsend MA and treated ourselves to some ice cream before heading home. Oh, I almost forgot to mention……more road closures and detours…..what’s up with that? All in all, even with the detour, getting separated, and road closures, I thought it was a pretty good Saturday COG ride. Everybody made it home safe and sound. Kevin Martin (#145)
Canaan 2 Canaan Ride Greg Mitchell had a good idea for a theme for a ride and submitted the event to the event calendar. The write-up stated, “According to a website, there are 19 towns in the USA named Canaan.” We’ll tackle two in this ride, starting in Canaan, CT just south of the Mass border and ending in Canaan, NY, just West of the Mass border. The two are only about 30 miles as the crow flies. But the scenic route will stretch it to 82 miles, winding south through Litchfield, CT before heading west and then North into the beautiful Hudson Valley of Dutchess and Columbia Counties.
The meet up time was 10:00 AM at the McDonald’s parking lot in Canaan CT. Greg lives close to the meet up place and had a short, direct shot there on RT-44. Steve’s ride there started just after 8 AM for a 58 mile, no-slab back roads route to the meet up spot using roads less traveled and new to him in Litchfield County. All was going great until a poorly placed and worded “Bridge Out” detour sign found him following the wrong detour with the undesired effect of being put miles off course in After several miles of not finding Rt-116, Ed Dyer came to the the wrong direction on a dirt road. While consulting the GPS our rescue and offered to lead via a short cut leading us directmap a very nice lady who was out for a walk, was able to idenly to our planned lunch stop in Whately MA. Ed lives in westtify which bridge was under construction. A route correction ern MA and knows the area well….lucky for me. My planned was made and was underway again. lunch stop was the Whately Diner on US-5 in Whately MA. Another first time eatery for me. I picked the Whately Diner & Truck Stop when I planned this ride thinking that if it’s good enough for truckers, it must be good enough for bikers. The Whately Diner worked out great. The place was rather small, but we were all able to sit together and the food was excellent. After lunch it was time to head back east, riding through Sunderland, Shutesbury, and Wendell MA. Unfortunately, I lost part of the group after I made a turn toward Shutesbury. Dave Fazzuoli followed me on the turn where we stopped to let the rest of the group join up with us, but for some reason they lost track of where we went, possibly due to traffic and lights. We waited and rode back to find the rest of the group with no luck. I seldom loose people on my rides, but this was a perfect ending to our earlier police detour and getting lost. Dave and Steve was first to arrive at the McD parking lot and was getting ready to find some shade when Al & Wendy Passineau I decided to continue on, hoping that Bob Petit would find us since he had my route in his GPS. rolled in, followed by Chris Pero a few moments later, and then our ride leader Greg Mitchell. It was a beautiful day. The cool temperature and sunshine was just right for a late spring day jaunt through CT Litchfield County and the scenic upper NY Hudson Valley. There were 4 riders registered – as Greg said, “this size is right in the sweet spot for a group ride.” We said our hellos and chatted a short bit and then it was time to go. Greg provided a quick pre-ride briefing and we were underway to experience the twisty and enjoyable route Greg planned for us. At about the halfway point in the ride we stopped at the Stewart’s Shop in Pine Plains to stretch the legs, get fuel, or whatever. We hung out in the shade to chat. The conversation turned to aftermarket exhausts and ECU flashing after it was noticed that Chris and Steve had Akrapovic exhaust slip on. It’s not typical to see one at a COG gathering, no less two. After a while we geared up and continued the ride. Our lunch destination was Smokey Sweet BBQ in Canaan NY. It’s one of those places you would ride by many times, but never had time to stop. We rolled in right around 1PM, as planned. We ordered our meals and grabbed a table with umbrella and began chatting about the ride. There were not too many cages along our route and only got caught behind them a couple of times. Luckily, we did not see too much wildlife either. Greg said he saw a couple of turkeys, while Wendy and Al mentioned they spotted a deer or two in one place. There was a comment about the 1/4 mile of hard pack dirt and gravel portion of a road. Greg said, “Not bad for me, as those who have accompanied me on other rides know.” The only near issue we had was when a cage blew past a yield sign when our group had the right of way and cut in front of Chris. Good thing he was on top of the situation and was expecting the cage to do the unexpected, back off and let him merge. We quickly got
only outdoor seating and no restroom or portapotty. We continued to enjoy great COG camaraderie and had discussions on riding techniques and other sundry subjects. Al mentioned that this was his first COG ride. Later that day he posted on the forum, “So glad I joined the ride with all of you. It was my first ride with COG members, and it was one of the best I have ever gone on. Thanks for the most fun ride I have had in a LONG time, and some fantastic conversation - I learned a lot. I honestly can’t wait to join another in the future!” After lunch Al and Wendy headed north toward home near Albany. Chris & I followed Greg, first making a pit stop at the Loves Travel Stop near the Mass Pike. From there Greg led us into Massachusetts and onto the most direct route towards his home in northwest CT. Chris peeled off at MA-57 to head east while Greg and Steve continued south on Norfolk Rd/CT-272. After Greg pulled into his driveway, Steve continued to blast home on RT 8. It was a fantastic day with a good route, tasty BBQ, and great COG camaraderie. Greg Mitchell (#8852) & Steve Smith (#3184)
2021 SPRING FLING REPORT The 2021 Spring Fling is in the books. Kudos to the hosts, NEAAD Steve & Sue Cerutti, for organizing this event and being persistent after having to cancel this event in 2020 due to the pandemic. Thanks to the members and friends who attended and helped make this no-frills event a success. While we were saddened that our Canadian members could not attend due to the continued pandemic border closure, we did have around 40 attendees from NY, NJ, CT, MA, MD, ME, and VA. Looking around the parking lot at this event really emphasizes the “Join for the bike, Stay for the People” club motto. I spied not only C14s and a C10s, but also a Kawasaki H2SE and Versys 1000, Yamaha FZ1 and Super Tenere, Buell Thunderbolt, Suzuki SV650, Honda ST1300, and some BMWs. What a diverse mix or bikes. Tim Ward from Monroeville PA was a guest of his brother David Ward (#13009) and had to say this, “This was my first COG event and found it to be very enjoyable. A wonderful location, great hotel accommodations and staff, good restaurants nearby, welcoming COG members and terrific riding opportunities thru the Catskill Mountains. I'll be thinking seriously about joining the group.”
around the cage and continued on. The food at Smokey Sweet BBQ was decent. Three of us had the burnt end brisket chunks with “Diablo” sauce. I did not hear any complaints about the food. One note is that there is

Riding in the Catskill Mountains is always fun. There are many roads that criss-cross the region and follow the contour of the large reservoirs and other bodies of water. Seven GPS routes were created and made available by download, along with the Garmin Basecamp generated route sheets for those without GPS. The roads were in generally great shape; only one route was reported to have construction with a mile or so of gravel surface.
