CEU EILEEN GRAY: NONCONFORMIST Nearly forgotten in her own time and re-discovered in the 1960’s, Eileen Gray is now regarded as one of the most influential designers of the Twentieth Century. This CEU presentation provides a high-level overview of Eileen Gray’s life and work, which spans different eras and aesthetics, as well as her lasting impact on Modernism. Of particular interest is the story of a house name “E1027”: a building defaced by Le Corbusier, used as a target practice by German soldiers, and which later became the site of murder, graffiti and neglect. Natural materials affect how a setting looks and also how people feel when they’re in it. This is especially true in the case of carpets and rugs, where the opportunities for impact are aesthetic, tactile and large-scale. But do you know where these natural fibers come from, the processes that take them from field to floor, and the variances that can occur along the way? In this presentation, you’ll gain an overview of the natural fibers from around the world used in carpet making today and the unique attributes of each, with an in-depth focus on wool and silk.
