EMMANUELLE CHOUSSY Etre & Paraitre, Space B274 designLAb is pleased to present Etre & Paraitre, LA-based French photographer, Emmanuelle Choussy, which marks her 10th year as a professional photographer. The exhibition title refers to Choussy’s philosophical inquiry regarding “being” and “seeming” and her work aims at questioning the meaning of appearances. Her images
Space B273 A Traveling Archive, organized by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles (IIC) and Fondazione Vico Magistretti takes an in-depth look at Vico Magistretti’s creativity through his work with some of the most prominent Italian design companies: Artemide, De Padova, Flou, Kartell, Fontana Arte, Campeggi, Oluce and Schiffini. The exhibition comprises sketches, pictures, notes, letters and faxes, as well as a selection of Magistretti’s most important creations. The exhibition is curated by Rosanna Pavoni, Drector of the Vico Magistretti Foundation, Milan and the Los Angeles Italian Cultural Institute curator Ilaria Mazzoleni (IM Studio MI/LA, SCI-Arc). Vico Magistretti (1920-2006), after taking his architecture degree in 1945 was actively involved in post-war reconstruction, both on the theoretical side through the MSA (Movement for Architectural Studies), of which he was one of the founders, and on the practical side with projects for INA-Casa and QT8 (Quartiere Triennale 8), an experimental urbanization project that allowed architects and planners complete freedom. (Today QT8 remains as one of the greener districts in Milan.). He also actively participated in the Milan Triennial Exhibitions, as supervisor of various sections, as well as winning a gold medal in the 9th edition of 1951, and the Grand Prize (Granpremio) in the 10th edition of 1954. A prolific designer, Vico Magistretti created mass-produced appliances and furniture and received many awards, among which are the Gold Medal at the 1951 Trienniale, the Grand Prix at the 1954 Trienniale, two Compasso d’Oro awards in the years 1967 and 1979 as well as the Gold Medal of the Chartered Society of Industrial Artists & Designers in 1986. The Vico Magistretti Foundation was established in 2010 and aims to preserve and promote Vico Magistretti’s archive and work. Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Los Angeles (IIC) was established in 1984 by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Italian culture in the USA in the fields of visual arts, architecture and design, music, cinema and theater, literature, science, fashion and gastronomy.

range from fashionable women or “hangers” used in fashion magazines to nudes in natural environments. In particular, Choussy’s highly stylized images versus her nudes are presented together to highlight notions of concealing and revealing in order to show the extent to which the staged image can portray truths about an individual or situation. The exhibition will include Choussy’s photographs, a dance performance by the Cabaret Versatile, as well as an auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen charity. The New York Times best-selling author Emily Griffin writes: “Having been a model before getting behind the camera, she [Choussy] has a fantastic ability for making her subjects feel comfortable and relaxed, as well as enhancing the qualities that make each of us uniquely beautiful.” Emmanuelle Choussy came to Los Angeles in 2011; she was born and raised in France and she has been taking photos since she stole her father’s camera at age seven. She is a professional photographer who in 2004 founded her own communication photo agency that has included clients and campaigns including numerous fashion designers, sports figures, politicians, clothing brands and major companies such as Airbus. Her work has been featured in major publications all over the globe.
Blue Lobby Exhibitions NATHAN MABRY Courtesy Cherry and Martin Gallery Nathan Mabry’s Heavy Handed (Flesh and Blood), 2014 was recently included in GOODGOD, a solo exhibition of his work at Cherry and Martin gallery, Los Angeles. Born in Colorado in 1978, Los Angeles-based Mabry has quickly established himself as a powerful young voice on the West Coast art scene with an impressive and critically acclaimed body of work that primarily includes sculpture and work on paper. Mabry was formally trained as a ceramicist and his largescale sculptures are cast from clay models and found objects; though the scale of Mabry’s work is often monumental, the intimacy of the artist’s hand is always present. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including archaeology, Dadaism, surrealism and minimalism, Mabry purposefully embraces different stylistic associations and makes references across the art historical timeline; in his own words, he “crashes” multiple aesthetics together. His unique voice is borne out of his unorthodox approach to this convergence of cultures, not unlike many of his artistic forebears in Los Angeles who share his interest in the uncanny and unexpected. Mabry received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla. His work has recently appeared in exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla; the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton; the Las Vegas Art Museum; the 176 Zabludowicz Collection, London, England; and the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas.
MAURA BENDETT Courtesy Edward Cella Art + Architecture and Alex Lippman Maura Bendett currently teaches at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA and Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles. Her work investigates the properties among painting, sculpture and the ground that lies between. Throughout her career, Bendett’s work has always found the edge between these two art forms, whether as painterly wall hanging sculptures or broken up sculptural paintings. Bendett has participated in numerous museum exhibitions including shows at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Santa Monica Museum of Art; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas; Pomona College Museum of Art; San Jose Museum of Art; Kansas City Art Institute; Arizona State University Art Gallery; COCA, Seattle. Recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at Roberts & Tilton Gallery, Los Angeles.
5th Floor Atrium Exhibit MATHIAS BENGTSSON Courtesy Industry Gallery, Space B270 INDUSTRY and the Pacific Design Center are pleased to present the Spun Carbon-Fiber Bench by Danish designer Mathias Bengtsson (b. 1977). The weightless lines that structure the Spun Bench are actually formed by a single, unbroken fiber. Conceived as a modular design, individual pieces can be combined to create a perfect circle, or placed at obtuse angles to create wave-like configurations. The Spun Bench has been made using a revolutionary new process and material - spun carbon fiber, partly developed by NASA to produce lightweight, strong, cylindrical pressure vehicles. Bengtsson has come to prominence in recent years with his highly sculptural forms and technologically ground-breaking seating design. Bengtsson uses a combination of traditional and innovative methods to create his works. Initially making drawings and models, he digitally alters the forms before interpreting them into modern materials using state-of-theart technology or processes. Bengtsson’s work is in the permanent collection of the MOMA in New York, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, as well as many other museums in Europe.
This unique red-carpet exhibition is sponsored by the Alliance Francaise Los Angeles and will be on view from September 17 - 30. Nathan Mabry

Giati Designs, Inc. Suite B122 Renson is proud of its long-standing experience in sun protection and ventilation, taking the outdoor space to a higher level. Camarque and Algarve are innovative yet practical terrace coverings with a bladed roof system, LED lighting and heating systems. They can be closed off on all sides with wind resistant Fixscreens, glass sliding walls, Loggia sliding panels or by using a combination. The roof consists of extruded aluminum blades that can be tilted to adjust sun protection and ventilation as required. When the blades are closed, they form a waterproof roof. During showers, the concealed channels drain the water away towards the columns. This water drainage also operates when the blades are opened up after it has rained, ensuring the furniture on the patio remains protected.
