Two other exhibits in the Lobby refer to the aesthetics of the Pacific Design Center as an iconic urban presence: an installation by Won Ju Lim and in the Green Lobby, Kenny Scharf’s Daisymobile (1975/2014), a Pontiac automobile the artist re-interpreted in terms of his iconic exuberant style.

2J 2JPDC, a site-specific installation by 2J (sculptor Justin Beal and painter Jesse Willenbring) considers the history of Cesar Pelli/Gruen Associates’ groundbreaking design for the Pacific Design Center as well as the building’s function within the daily commerce of design. The focal point of the exhibition is an existing system of 2J walls and tables that use vertical and horizontal glass planes that divide the space into layers of superimposed and overlapping imagery. The graphic images in 2JPDC, printed with a digital process commonly associated with commercial signage, draw on a number of historical sources, including a 1981 issue of the Japanese Magazine Global Architecture (which includes Kenneth Frampton’s essay on Cesar Pelli, “Building for Megalopolis”), an anecdotal account of Robert Venturi’s mother’s geraniums and a library of widely available library of computer-generated water graphics. Treating images with a sculptural sensibility, 2J produces modular systems of furniture, objects and installations that collapse the boundary between surface and support and undermine the conventional binaries of repression and expression that so often divide the realms of design and art.

sculpture and modernist architectural tropes, with its use of translucent and colored Plexiglas units of different sizes stacked up in boxlike shapes to assemble model-scale “buildings” in futuristic cityscapes. Interior light boxes direct light through several layers of Plexiglas to create entirely new visual effects that make the work seem to be lit up from within. The artificial materiality of the construction, as well as the dramatic setting of the large-scale pieces, with their magical use of the light box create its own powerful glowing space. The exhibit is curated by Alexandra Lippman.

KENNY SCHARF Located in the Green Lobby is Kenny Scharf’s Daisymobile, (1975/2014), a customized Pontiac automobile sculpture that features the artist’s iconic imagery. For Scharf, the car is a natural extension of his practice of transforming mass-produced objects of daily life, like televisions and telephones, into boldly colored assemblages. With their ultramodern design features, automobiles of the late 1950s, 1960s and 70s are for the artist the personification of the era’s optimism and innovation. More than just an aestheticization of objects, these customized vehicles are Scharf’s exuberant, maximalist interpretation of what was once America’s futuristic utopia.

Bernhard Willhelm 3000: When Fashion Shows The Danger Then Fashion Is The Danger is a sitespecific work at MOCA Pacific Design Center that functions as a sculptural installation and features their Fall / Winter 2015-16 collection. Including video, photography, and displays of ephemera and objects selected by Willhelm, the installation is a meditation on the future of commerce, and the designers’ response to the uniformity of consumerism in the 21st century.

Design Comes of Age: The Blue Whale Celebrates its Ruby Anniversary “Pacific Design Center is a six-story blue presence that is felt from great distances.” -Progressive Architecture, 1976 From its inception, Pacific Design Center aimed to become a revolutionary force in the world of interior design. A transformative West Coast presence seeking to transcend traditional roles of “merchandise marts” as a national hub for decoration, culture, and events. Today PDC is a thriving international design destination, housing over 85 showrooms, and 2,200 product lines; a soughtafter venue hosting events by some of the world’s leading brands; a cultural center, home to a satellite branch of the renown Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and through its designLAb initiative and a dynamic partner to the Hollywood film industry hosting hundreds of screenings and film shoots each year. If anniversaries serve as benchmarks of an institution’s overall trajectory, then 40 years after its debut, it would seem like Pacific Design Center is well underway to becoming the multi-dimensional landmark it set out to be. The history of the iconic “Blue Whale,” however, has hardly been predictable or linear. PDC’s is a story of early success, struggle, and reinvention— a story not entirely uncommon in a city that rarely ever adheres to convention.

“There is a certain openness, a certain lightness to work on the West Coast, which allows for, and even requires, an architecture that is a little more daring.” -Caesar Pelli Makings of a Landmark What started off as an ambitious attempt to give focus to the thriving Los Angeles interior design and furnishings industry of the 1970s soon became one of the most influential and defining projects for the West Coast interior design trade. Originally conceived in 1971, The Pacific Design Center was developed by Gruen Associates and designed by internationally celebrated Argentinian-American architect Cesar Pelli to be purposely “out scale with the neighborhood.” Ron Kates, leasing agent for the Design Center at the time, shared his own vision for the project, explaining that the six-story low-rise aimed to be “more than just a vertical mall of shops, but the heart and soul of the decorating business in Los Angeles.” The “Blue Whale,” as it would be affectionately known by many in the community, was in fact an effort to consolidate the disparate design industry of the Beverly-Robertson area. Already a prolific hub for furnishings and interior design, Los Angeles was thought to lack a centralized market that could serve as a one-stop shop for professionals looking for sought-after local and international product. Given the large scale of the project— a massive 771,000 square feet of showroom space with an adjoining 2,000 car parking-lot — the building would in fact help to shape not only the design industry, but by virtue of its size, the surrounding area. Construction of the metal and glass structure, which received an unprecedented 2-year building permit from the city, began in 1973 on land acquired from the Southern Pacific Land Company. From an architectural standpoint, the titanic asymmetrical building was met with strong skepticism by the community, particularly given the daunting sight of its steel skeleton extending far beyond anything in the vicinity. “The building was conceived as an extruded form

cut off at both ends” explains Pelli, “an architectural fragment sitting on the ground in a very bright, unusual color to make it unique.” However, upon it’s completion in 1975, it wasn’t long before the building received wide praise from admirers around the world, given its sophisticated fluid shape and bold blueglass panels echoing the nearby Pacific Ocean. From a leasing perspective, the future Design Center was an instant hit, boasting a 65% lease rate before its completion. By 1976, PDC hosted some of the most recognizable names in interior design and furnishings, including Knoll International, Herman Miller, Kneedler-Fauchère, Baker, and Lee/Jofa.

Cohen Pieces of a Puzzle Within a decade, PDC had become an undisputed leader in West Coast architecture, interior design, and furnishings. WESTWEEK, its annual design conference, had gathered significant momentum, attracting a global audience of nearly 20,000 visitors each year. The dramatic success of the building along with a 100% occupancy rate, lead to the development of an additional 475,000 square feet of showroom space known as the Phase II expansion. While the original 1970s concept proposed a 3 building complex — a rectangular Blue Building, a triangular Green Building, and a semicircular Red Building— this much anticipated geometric sequel sought to help solidify the PDC as a local landmark, and the heart of the Los Angeles design trade. The Green Building was completed in 1988, with a projected 50 brands looking to open or expand showrooms, however a sudden shift in the contract and office furnishings industry, followed by a drastic economic downturn lead to a steep decline in leases by 1991. “As we went through the recession, the street became more viable,” shares Rocky LaFleur, who currently works as Hospitality and Residential Outside Sales Representative for Kneedler-Fauchère. He recalls his time working with the leasing team at Pacific Design Center, and the challenges he faced to fill available showroom space with short-term leases and temporary tenants as a significantly difficult time for the building. However, there were valuable lessons to be learned from the changing dynamics in the design trade. “The tenants of the building have all learned how to adapt,” he explained, “every customer that enters the door today is valued as a result.”

In 1999, prolific Manhattan-based developer Charles S. Cohen acquired Pacific Design Center, adding the West Coast landmark to his already impressive portfolio of nationwide properties. Cohen was no stranger to the design trade, owning and operating the iconic Decoration and Design Building in New York City, and later the Decorative Center Houston and the Design Center of the Americas. Besides dramatic improvements to the infrastructure of the Blue Building to reflect a more contemporary and accurate idea of the interior design trade, Cohen transformed the Green Building to luxury office space. By diversifying the tenant base, he sought to make the campus considerably more approachable, and more in line with his vision for the PDC as a leading cultural and entertainment destination. “It’s about connecting the Design Center to its community,” he explained, “most importantly the creative community which is right at our doorstep.” However, it was yet another key development under Cohen’s leadership that would have the greatest impact in shaping the building and fulfilling his vision for the property: the construction of the Red Building.

People are here to be inspired.” -Rocky LaFleur A Unique Sculpture Garden Completing Cesar Pelli’s vision of the PDC as a king-size sculpture garden, the City of West Hollywood enthusiastically authorized the development of the Red Building in 2004. By 2012 the 400,000 square foot, 16-story ruby Red Building, joined its Blue and Green counterparts creating one of the most recognizable landmarks in the whole of Los Angeles. For Pelli, this was no minor accomplishment, concluding over four decades of designs, revisions, and uncertainty as to whether his trilogy would ever come to fruition. The Red Building, developed as top-ofthe-line luxury office space for creative brands, employed revolutionary new technologies to attain its striking hue. “This is not a color that exists in a vacuum, it’s part of a group,” stressed Pelli, “and the group needs to work like a great painting.” This harmony of shape and color of course reflected the seamless and natural relationship between culture, art, and design that now coexisted in the property. The “Blue Whale” also saw a significant resurgence during the early Cohen years, attracting some of the most highly respected names in the interior design trade including Thomas Lavin, Holly Hunt, JANUS et Cie, and Summit. Many of these names would eventually become synonymous with the PDC, and come to represent the caliber of product and talent in the building. “There is a misunderstanding by some people on the street about what the building has to offer,” explains Thomas Lavin, who recently expanded his prestigious showroom. “I think when designers are really doing their shopping, they go to PDC, and it certainly is the international destination for home furnishings.” While the design trade has and continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, and the role of design centers and showrooms has shifted, there is something timeless about the PDC. “Today, the value of the design center becomes heightened because it’s about relationships and about community,” says LaFleur. “So much of the value of this business is people coming together to talk to each-other.” The Pacific Design Center has come a long way from its beginnings as an effort to consolidate the Los Angeles interior design trade. It has become an international design destination fostering strong relationships with leading voices in design like Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, and renown designers like Kelly Wearstler, Timothy Corrigan, and Barbara Barry. It has become a sought-after event venue attracting international brands like City of Hope and Land Rover, and a hub for international-caliber art exhibitions from the likes of Steve McQueen and Jacob Hashimoto. Above all, it has embraced the creative community in unprecedented ways, opening its doors to exciting new prospects.

The new Attic and Lost & Found Collections take a cue from George Eliot’s Mill on the Floss, “the great attic under the high pitched roof with worm eaten shelves and dark rafters festooned with cobwebs” is described as weird and ghostly. However, as every child knows, the attic is a secret world of forgotten treasure. In the ancient steamer trunk, still lies the Boer War uniform of Great Uncle Jack, lost at Mafeking. Lee Jofa, Suite B639 Groundworks introduces a collection of vibrantly colored and visually stunning fabrics, wallpapers and carpets designed by Hunt Slonem, a world-renowned artist best known for his Neo-Expressionist paintings of exotic animals and tropical plant life. Slonem’s inspiration for his frequent subjects, as well as his vibrant color palette, can be traced to childhood visits to Hawaii and Nicaragua. His empathy for nature can be seen through both his home and studio which house hundreds of birds, both in and out of cages. For the Groundworks collection, several of Slonem’s most popular themes and iconic works have been translated into extraordinary art for the home.

Ralph Pucci West Coast, Suite B203 Andree Putman’s Time Flies is a work in progress collection featuring both iconic and never before seen pieces from the famous French designer. The first re-issued designs include offerings from her 6 Easy Pieces Collection, the Sitting On A Cloud vanity chair and Crescent Moon sofa. Periodic additions to the collection will be produced in the U.S. by Ralph Pucci.

Innovations in Wallcoverings, Suite M20 Celebrating their 40th year in business, Innovations is reviving a curated selection of unique and innovative wallcoverings from their archive. Mesa, Lonhide, Lonrib and Lonstripe were created using an industrial material that was once used as a lining for the interiors of commuter trains in Japan. In the 1980s, Innovations developed a thinner version of the material, resulting in a groundbreaking new wallcovering. In their re-introduction, these four wallcoverings comprise the Innovations Classics Collection.
