’m lucky with my hair, it’s always been thick and fairly good quality. However, the older I get the more I worry about various things – am I having the right cut? Am I damaging it? Will it fall out? Will I go grey soon? I decided to consult an expert on my worries. I’ve been going to the same hairdresser since I was 10 years old. His name is Rod and I consider him family. Rod runs a salon – 31B in Tunbridge Wells and has more knowledge about hair than anyone I’ve ever met! During our conversation though, the thing I was most surprised at were the key mistakes we all might be making with our hair, so I decided to share them… 33

The Way You Dry Your Hair
According to Rod there are lots of things we could be doing wrong when it comes to washing. The first is using too much shampoo, you only need a small amount. The second is not washing it all out properly. The sole cause of static is shampoo left in your hair. If your hair goes a little fluffy after washing it also probably means the temperature of the water is too hot!
According to Rod, some of our drying habits are causing problems. His first piece of advice is to rough dry hair with a towel first. The next is to decide how you want the finish. If you want straight hair, use a nozzle on the drier and angle it down the hair. Do not aim the drier direct on. The flow of the air should follow the length of the hair. Also, the hotter the temperature, the straighter it will go. If it’s volume you’re after, it’s best not to use a nozzle and use a cooler temperature.

Cutting Your Hair To Make It Grow
This is a myth! Who knew? If you want to grow your hair, it should not be cut for at least 12 weeks. If the shape is fine, don’t cut it more regularly than this. However, if you have split ends, you can use a tool called a split-ender instead. No need to take length off, just get rid of the split ends and the length will accelerate! 34

According to Rod, if you’re heading to a new salon or a new stylist, if they don’t offer you a free consultation which includes analysing your face shape and skin tone before doing anything with a cut or colour, you should just get up and walk out! A good hairdresser will always advise against a cut that’s not right for your face.
