Eames Molded Plywood (LCW) — Charles and Ray Eames

D

esigned by Charles and Ray Eames in 1946, the iconic chair became known as the “Design of the Century” by Time Magazine (2001). The Eames Molded Plywood Chair is the epitome of design and modernity. In the early 1940s, the husband and wife design duo, experimented with woodmolding techniques that would have profound effects on the design world. Their discoveries led to a commission from the US Navy to develop plywood splints, stretchers, and glider shells, molded under heat and pressure, which were used successfully in World War II. When the war was over, Charles and Ray applied the technology they had created to

making affordable, high-quality chairs that could be mass-produced using dimensionally shaped surfaces instead of cushioned upholstery. When they found that plywood did not withstand the stresses that occurred where the chair seat and back met, they abandoned their original single-shell idea in favor of a chair that had separate moldedplywood panels for the back and seat. The process eliminated the extraneous wood needed to connect the seat with the back, which reduced the weight and visual profile of the chair and established a basis for modern furniture design. Sculpting a seat and back to fit the contours of the human body, they designed a truly comfortable chair that’s suitable for businesses and homes.

George Nelson, Herman Miller’s design director from 1945 to 1972, viewed design as a response to social change. The Herman Miller Collection examplifies that view. Now, as then, Herman Miller works with the world’s leading designers to understand the problems one may encounter in daily living and solve them in light of an ever-changing society. New and archival designs translate this understanding into empathy, thus anchoring a setting as open-ended as a living room. or as focused as a small office with both purpose and beauty.

Eames Lounge Chair — Charles and Ray Eames

T

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is just as relevant today as when it was first introduced in 1956. A timeless and aspirational piece of mid-century modern furniture, the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is instantly recognizable. Over the years, the chair and ottoman have seen updates to the overall offering, all while staying true to the original design intent. Charles and Ray Eames gained inspiration from visiting their friend, director Billy Wilder on his film sets. Wilder, would often put together make shift lounge chairs to

nap on in-between sets. This struck a chord with the couple as they saw an opportunity to combine the plywood technology they developed for the military with the needs of Wilder. When it debuted in 1956, the couple described the chair as having “the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt” that would provide respite from the “strains of modern living’. While the set may have humble origins, the Eames Lounge chair and ottoman are in the permanent collection of New York’s Museum.

Aeron — Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick

D

esigned by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick in 1994 and remastered in 2016. When designers Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick set out to create a chair that was health-positive, cross-performing, inclusively-sized, and environmentally sensitive, they arrived at a design unlike the world had ever seen. The Aeron demonstrated a pioneering step in ergonomics and material innovation and provided a comfortable solution without the standard use of foam, fabric, or leather. This

changed people’s perception of what an office chair could be and in doing so, it soon found a place in popular culture. Fast forward to the present, the same criteria serves as the foundation for the Remastered Aeron. Just as iconic films and albums are updated for new mediums, standards, and audiences, the Aeron has been remastered based on Herman Miller’s latest research. This focuses on the science of sitting, advancements in materials, manufacturing, technology, and today’s world of work.

Swoop — Brian Kane

D

uring his time as an instructor at the California College of Art, industrial designer Brian Kane, observed how students interacted with furniture in public spaces on campus. He noticed that very few of them sat in what might be considered a traditional way. They perched on arms. They curled up. They sprawled out. This observation inspired versatile and fluid design response, which became the swoop family of lounge furniture. The sweeping curves of Swoop’s modular seating, and work tables fit perfectly over armrests. Coffee tables function as stools with

addition of a cushion top. All components work together in countless ways to create flexible, reconfigurable spaces where people can get together casually and comfortably. In March of 1989, Kane established Kane Design Studio in San Francisco. The firm has been involved in the design and development of products for Metro, Steelcase, Carnegie, Landscapeforms, Bernhardt Furniture Co., Martin/Brattrud Inc, Falcon, Halcon, Tuohy, HBF, Coalesse, Decca, Nemscoff, Summit, Hon, and Herman Miller.

Bumper— Ward Bennett

I

n a career that spanned over five decades, Ward Bennett designed everything from jewelry and flatware, to chairs and houses. Renowned for his interior concepts, which effortlessly blended old and modern styles, luxury and industrial materials; Bennett created furniture designs that marry classic motifs with a modern, minimalist rigor—like the Bumper Chair’s contemporary take on the traditional bucket seat—and work seamlessly in a variety of spaces. With its gentle sweep and excellent lumbar

support, comfort is paramount in the Bumper Chair’s deceptively simple, nearly seam‑free design. The arm cap and inner and outer shells are shaped from a single piece of upholstery, creating a continuous, uninterrupted welt around the seat. Originally introduced in 1964, the Bumper Chair’s robust portfolio of customization options includes numerous textiles and leather upholsteries, as well as a series of bases, making it the perfect chair for a variety of lounge, living, and work spaces.

Loll Lolligagger Outdoor Lounge — Loll Design

L

oll’s history dates back to 1997 at the height of the skateboard scene. The company began as a design and build contractor team specializing in custom municipal skateparks known as the Trueride crew. The crews dedication to the environment,

innovation and design, lead to the creation of Loll Designs. Loll specializes in durable, allweather, outdoor furniture and accessories made with recycled materials - mostly from single-use milk jugs. Loll has partnered with prolific designers and architects with a common goal - to enhance people, the planet

and everything they do through design and manufacturing. The Lollygagger Outdoor Lounge Chair is Loll’s namesake patio chair. When you slide in, you’ll find all the angles feel just right and the two back planes add an unexpected level of comfort. The Lollygagger has an integrated bottle opener hidden under the right arm. Whether in pairs or alone, this patio lounge chair will create that perfect spot for outdoor lollygagging. Plus, it’s made in the USA from recycled plastic, which means it’s easy to clean and requires no maintenance.

Design Within Reach (DWR) was founded in 1998, with a mission to make authentic modern design accessible. Authentic means that it’s the real thing. They don’t do “inspired by” or “just as good as” or “in the spirit of.” Today, the company offers the world’s largest collection of authentic modern design, for contract and hospitality clients. odernism with Soul, Architect/ designer Craig Bassam and brand strategist/creative director Scott Fellows joined forces in 2003 to form BassamFellows. On the heels of successful solo ventures and with a single shared vision in mind—to return true craftsmanship and beauty to contemporary living—the duo quickly garnered attention as “the newest member of the design world’s A team.” The pair’s first signature furniture collection was launched in 2003 and has since gained an international following, including Rem Koolhaas and Philippe Starck. Other credits include a collection for McGuire and designs for Geiger International. Since 2010, BassamFellows has acted as creative directors for the Speciality and Consumer Businesses

of Herman Miller, which includes Geiger International. Tuxedo Classic is about comfort and elegance. This new group for the Tuxedo Component Lounge extends the line’s range, adding a more traditional appearance. Its new and larger upholstered base sits closer to the floor, supported on round, solid wood legs. The overall effect is a more anchored, restrained aesthetic. Marrying the flexibility and functionality of sectional seating with the elegance of a highly tailored sofa, the group is built on a series of simple base elements from which a full array of configurations are possible. The group includes a lounge chair, settee, and sofa, as well as corner units for all sizes.

Geiger is known for their quality craftsmanship and wood mastery. Since 1964, Geiger’s reputation for quality, sustainability, design, and engineering has continued to enhance business interiors with an elegant and intelligent portfolio of designs for the modern workplace.

Scissor Chair — Ward Bennett

D

esigned by Ward Bennett, an early version of the Scissor appeared in 1964; by 1968, Bennett had refined the design, settling on softened rectangular sections. Described by its designer as his most comfortable chair ever. Inspired by the hammock-style chaise transatlantique of the mid-nineteenth century. A combination of unique aesthetics and functional portability, Scissor is perfect for public and private spaces that desire to make a dramatic statement. Available in a wide array of metal finishes; it can be upholstered in virtually any leather or textile. Hailed by the American Institute of Architects for “transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects”. Ward Bennett was one of

the earliest American designers to introduce industrial materials into the home, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s. In 1964, he undertook a collaboration with Brickel Associates, designing furniture and textiles; in 1987, he began working with Geiger directly. A prodigious designer of objects, Bennett also designed for Tiffany and Company, Sasaki and Hermès. His designs are represented in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection as well as in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. In 2004, Geiger re-introduced several iconic Bennett designs, including the Scissor chair, H Frame storage and I Beam table, as the Ward Bennett Business Classics collection.

Swan Chair — Arne Jacobsen

With new technologies, however, the old rules no longer applied, he was able to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. The Swan Chair is now made from polyurethane foam, but at the time, Jacobsen used Styropore® to create its continuous shape. Designed for the SASRoyal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen was the architect, the chair permitted guests to spin on its swivel base, thus becoming active participants in the busy hotel atmosphere. A single upholsterer hand-sews the fabric

onto the frame of Swan. Fall in love with Jacobsen’s easy chair masterpiece in fabric, which adds a beautiful, sophisticated expression to any interior - and brings joy to any design enthusiast. Jacobsen began training as a mason before studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he won a silver medal for a chair that was then exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Influenced by Le Corbusier, Gunnar Asplund and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Jacobsen embraced a functionalist approach from the outset. He was among the first to introduce modernist ideas to Denmark and create industrial furniture that built on the country’s craft-based design heritage.

DWR scours the globe to find the best in modern design. Not only providing access to authentic pieces from the past they develop long-standing relationships with design-focused leaders such as Stua, Fritz Hansen, Verpan, Tolix, Loll and many others. They also have their own product development team, which gives them worldwide sourcing and buying power to bring innovative products to market. Plus, they’ve also contracted with the industry’s leading designers to create exclusive products for DWR– which translates into exclusive products for you.
