A Message from the President Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Colburn School for today’s performance. It is truly a privilege to include you in our audience—your presence provides incomparable support to our accomplished students, faculty, and guest artists who take the stage to share their talent and artistry with you. Last semester was not only a period of transition for our community, but also a time to reconnect. Dedicated families returned to campus for classes; determined students continued pursuing their craft through in-person instruction. Our world-class faculty rekindled the passion for learning in their studios and classrooms, and the unwavering support from our donors made it possible for students to once again be immersed in the Colburn experience. I am personally grateful for all the ways our community has adapted and grown in these past few months, and I am confident that our young artists will continue to thrive. As our 2021–22 season continues this spring, there will be opportunities to see our Trudl Zipper Dance Institute students in action at Tap Fest and Counterpointe, to welcome our alumni back to Colburn through the Next Up series, and of course, to be inspired by our signature programs like the Colburn Orchestra and Colburn Chamber Music Society. We also invite you to join us for our annual Gala on April 3, where we will gather together to celebrate the start of the second decade of the Music Academy and to honor Jean-Yves Thibaudet for his artistic contributions to the School. Colburn continues to prioritize the health and safety of our community, and we will be sure to keep you abreast of any changes to our event protocols. Thank you for your ongoing patience as we take all necessary precautions, and more importantly, thank you for your dedication to our students and to the School. An incredible performance awaits you—please enjoy. Sincerely,
Sel Kardan President and Chief Executive Officer

About the Music ezra shcolnik (b. 2001)
Poem for String Orchestra (2021) by Ezra Shcolnik, violinist in the Bachelor of Music program at the Colburn Conservatory of Music
I was still a senior in the Academy when Ms. Batjer asked me to write a piece for the Virtuosi. Since then, I have always felt eager to do it, but I did not know how I would approach it at first. That summer, I had the good fortune to rehearse and perform Schoenberg’s magical Verklärte Nacht in the equally magical environment of the Perlman Music Program. I fell in love with the gorgeous harmonies and textures of Verklärte Nacht, and it represented a way of writing for string orchestra that I had not known until then. I remember already trying out some ideas for this piece on the charmingly beat-up piano in the boys’ dorm at PMP, but I finally had time to write it in earnest during May and June of last year. Though I call my piece Poem, it does not have a specific program or story like Verklärte Nacht. However, I am indebted to Schoenberg in all other ways, and I even include some quotations from him. After five years in the Virtuosi, I feel so grateful to come full circle with this project. I am finishing my junior year in the Conservatory now, and more than ever, I realize how much I developed by playing in the Virtuosi and being guided by Ms. Batjer. I have learned so much from rehearsing this piece, and I hope it has been helpful and enjoyable for the orchestra too. In particular, I appreciate the extended amount of time we have had to work on it. This has allowed it to grow and improve, and it is a rare luxury for a composer. I would like to thank Ms. Batjer, Molly, and all of the Virtuosi for their willingness to pursue this project.
Music Academy Scholarships Our donor community recognizes the excellence of Music Academy students through the Kohl Scholars, Greendale Scholars, and Thibaudet Scholars programs and through additional scholarship awards in recognition of merit and financial need. Special appreciation goes to the extraordinary scholarship support of Terri and Jerry Kohl, the Moe & Arlene Greendale Endowment Fund, the Colburn Foundation, Martine and Dan Drackett, Elizabeth Loucks Samson, Larry Rubenstein, and Marilyn Ziering. Kohl Scholars are full scholarships for a select number of pianists and violinists in the Music Academy who are invited to the Music Academy at no cost. Becoming a Kohl Scholar is a celebrated achievement for a young artist, one that not only provides the financial assistance needed to succeed in the performing arts, but also indicates competitive success in the piano and violin auditions. Greendale Scholars are students of exceptional talent who have been awarded a financialaid scholarship from the Moe & Arlene Greendale Endowment Fund. This fund has been established to memorialize and honor the Greendales, who, through their gift, desire to perpetuate access to musical excellence, which at one time was generously extended to Mr. Greendale. Thibaudet Scholars, named for renowned pianist and Colburn Artist-in-Residence JeanYves Thibaudet, are merit-based awards for any instrumental position in the Music Academy. These awards recognize the generosity of our donors and Mr. Thibaudet’s continued artistic involvement and dedication. If you would like to learn more about providing scholarship support to the Colburn Music Academy, contact advancement@colburnschool.edu.

RECOVERED VOICES
schulhoff & more an original online series
Presented by the Colburn School’s Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices, this four-part online series featuring James Conlon delves into the life and music of Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942). Schulhoff ’s life and career are emblematic of the vitality not only of his own work, but that of two generations of composers whose lives, careers, and legacies were profoundly disrupted during— and following—the years 1933–1945 as a result of Nazi repression. Special thanks to LA Opera’s Recovered Voices project.
This series is free and available to the public.
