the future of performing arts education with first republic bank
Colburn School For over six decades, the Colburn School has been a leader in the field of performing arts education. The School’s Conservatory of Music, Music Academy, Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, Community School of Performing Arts, and Center for Innovation and Community Impact are all guided by the single philosophy that all who desire to study music and dance should have access to do so at the very highest levels. The extraordinary talent, expertise, and dedication of our faculty is incomparable and helps students reach their fullest potential. Located in the heart of the cultural corridor of Los Angeles, Colburn is situated within one of the largest and liveliest centers of performing and visual arts in the world. Our students benefit from relationships with our neighbors including the LA Opera, LA Philharmonic, LA Chamber Orchestra, and the Music Center. And our board and philanthropic community care deeply about the Los Angeles, national, and international performing arts communities and their peer supporters.
Education First The Colburn School’s core tenet is access to excellence. With scholarships at all levels of education—from early childhood to graduate-level collegiate study—everyone who desires to study at the Colburn School will face no financial barriers in doing so. Their access to education comes first. Unlike most private schools, over 75% of Colburn’s operating budget is funded by philanthropy. Modest tuition, room, and board covers less than 15% of our operations. This is made possible through the generosity of philanthropists and civic leaders in Los Angeles, nationally, and globally. Annually, the School raises over $9M to fund scholarships, performances, guest artists and mentors, wellness, community engagement, and more.
2022-23 Special Events Joy!: First Annual Winter Dance Celebration In support of our Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, Joy! will be the fundraising event of the season for dance scholarships, programming, and special projects including providing access to much-needed dance venues around town. This evening-time dance fundraiser is comprised of a two-act festive holiday performance featuring students from all dance genres— ballet, modern, and tap. An “open house” style reception hosted all around campus will welcome philanthropists, families, and artists to gather and celebrate Dance Institute students and deepen our connections with the dance community in Los Angeles.
Celebrate Colburn Gala Through the gala, our donors demonstrate their commitment to the development of young artists who go on to share and celebrate their creativity and humanity on global stages. The gala is marked by a marquee performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and an elegant supper on the School’s premier downtown Los Angeles campus. In addition to the uplifting performance by students and professional guest artists, each year, the School bestows the Richard D. Colburn Award to professional artists and civic leaders who have demonstrated an extraordinary and life-long commitment to the arts that mirrors that of the Colburn School: putting access, excellence, and engagement first. Our 2023 Artist Honoree will be French conductor Stéphane Denève, who is Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Brussels Philharmonic, Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic for the 2023–24 season, and our guest conductor for the Celebrate Colburn Gala.
