The Community School of Performing Arts is committed to making the highest quality music education available to all. Passionate, dedicated students of all ability levels and ages come to Colburn’s campus each year to play in ensembles and to study instruments, voice, music theory, drama, and more with world-class teachers.

The Music Academy brings exceptional pre-college students from around the world to Colburn, where they take their training to the next level. Young musicians ages 12–18 balance performance, musical instruction, and academics in a comprehensive program that allows them to flourish and develop their artistry.

conservatory of music

The Conservatory of Music opened in 2003 with one goal: to train the very highest level of classical instrumental performers for careers in music. Outstanding performance opportunities; unparalleled faculty; and full scholarships covering tuition, room, and board for all students have allowed the Conservatory to produce dynamic young soloists, chamber groups, educators, and orchestra musicians.

The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute is dedicated to developing the talent and ambitions of its students, from beginners in Youth Dance to aspiring professionals in the Dance Academy. Performers of all levels receive sequential training in ballet, modern, tap, and jazz genres in a cohesive curriculum that emphasizes the joy of dance through artistic and technical accomplishment.

Flower is an immersive experience in movement storytelling that highlights intergenerational equity in the community of Oakland, California, and demonstrates how dance can be used as a powerful tool to provoke social change. The phrase ‘army of generals’ was used by the 18th century author Charles Burney to describe the splendid court orchestra at Mannheim, Germany, an orchestra coveted by Mozart. The Baroque Ensemble will perform galant orchestral music that was originally performed by this famous ensemble.

Celebrating 15 years of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute

Dance has been part of the Colburn curriculum for decades, but 15 years ago, a transformative gift gave the dance program the name we use today, honoring influential dancer, choreographer, and teacher Trudl Zipper (top left). This season, experience exuberant performances from Colburn dancers, and join us in welcoming Margaret Tracey (bottom left), Dean of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute.

Pre-concert talk featuring James Conlon, Harvey Sachs, and Diana Castelnuovo-Tedesco starts at 5:30 pm.

Dedicated to emigre, composer, and long-time Los Angeles resident Walter Arlen, this program features premieres of works by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Walter Arlen, who both fled fascism and artistic repression in Europe and made their home in Los Angeles. Special guests will discuss the life-defining challenges European artists faced in the 1930s and 40s and what must be done today to keep their work alive.

Passionate, dedicated students of all ability levels and ages can study instruments, voice, music theory, musical theatre, and more with our world-class faculty. Early childhood music programs from ages 7 months–5 years introduce children to the wonders of the performing arts, and private lessons, group classes, and ensemble programs are available from age 5 through to adult, for all levels of experience.
