A Message from the President Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Colburn School for today’s performance. It is truly a privilege to include you in our audience—your presence provides incomparable support to our accomplished students, faculty, and guest artists who take the stage to share their talent and artistry with you. Last semester was not only a period of transition for our community, but also a time to reconnect. Dedicated families returned to campus for classes; determined students continued pursuing their craft through in-person instruction. Our world-class faculty rekindled the passion for learning in their studios and classrooms, and the unwavering support from our donors made it possible for students to once again be immersed in the Colburn experience. I am personally grateful for all the ways our community has adapted and grown in these past few months, and I am confident that our young artists will continue to thrive. As our 2021–22 season continues this spring, there will be opportunities to see our Trudl Zipper Dance Institute students in action at Tap Fest and Counterpointe, to welcome our alumni back to Colburn through the Next Up series, and of course, to be inspired by our signature programs like the Colburn Orchestra and Colburn Chamber Music Society. We also invite you to join us for our annual Gala on April 3, where we will gather together to celebrate the start of the second decade of the Music Academy and to honor Jean-Yves Thibaudet for his artistic contributions to the School. Colburn continues to prioritize the health and safety of our community, and we will be sure to keep you abreast of any changes to our event protocols. Thank you for your ongoing patience as we take all necessary precautions, and more importantly, thank you for your dedication to our students and to the School. An incredible performance awaits you—please enjoy. Sincerely,
Sel Kardan
President and Chief Executive Officer

Dear Audience, On behalf of the new dance Dean Silas Farley and Associate Dean Darleen Callaghan, and Tap and Musical Theater Chair Denise Scheerer, we are delighted to welcome you back to the Colburn School for Tap Fest 2022! We are thrilled to bring this incredible cast of dancers and musicians to Zipper Hall to celebrate swing music and its deep connection to tap dance. We are also very proud to present our young Tap Ensemble II dancers. Standards that Swing, curated by Colburn tap dance teacher Johnnie Hobbs, will highlight the creative connection and historical significance between jazz music and tap dance. The Unabridged Random House Dictionary defines a standard as a musical piece of sufficiently enduring popularity held in continuing esteem that is made part of a permanent repertoire. Autumn Leaves by Joseph Kosma, Fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard, Willow Weep for Me by Ann Ronnell, or Struttin' with Some Barbecue by Lillian "Lil" Hardin are amongst the standard lineup. When these tunes and others like them are played in a jazz club or your music streaming account, you have an instant memory of the melody, even if the title escapes you. Tap dance, like music (because it is music), has its share of standards: #53 by Leon Collins, Harold Cromer’s Opus 1, and Eddie Brown’s BS Chorus. These feats of musical and physical ability continue to be passed down to challenge and inspire multiple generations from all over the world. Creating a standard, whether in tap, jazz, or any other profession, does not happen by osmosis. It happens by having a desire to express a feeling or mood—then having the discipline to accumulate enough hours of practice to see your vision come to fruition. Our skilled and gifted guests: Sam Weber, Joseph Wiggan, and Josette Wiggan are no strangers to discipline and practice. Throughout the evening, you will be given a glimpse into how each performer honed their skills to maximize the amount of freedom they will reach while dancing. Again, we are so happy to see you. Welcome to Standards that Swing. Johnnie Hobbs III Host and Show Curator

Josette Wiggan-Freund Josette Wiggan-Freund began her dance adventure with Paul and Arlene Kennedy in Los Angeles at the age of twelve. Her love for performing was fostered by the Kennedys and then refined as an adult while dancing with Jazz Tap Ensemble until 2007. A graduate of UCLA, Josette Wiggan-Freund’s career highlights include the 2001 Spotlight Award winner in non-classical dance category, the 1st National Broadway Tour of 42nd Street, movies Idlewild and Princess and the Frog, and studying with Germaine Acogny at L’ecole des Sables in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal. Alongside her brother, she was a part of two original casts of Cirque du Soleil’s Banana Shpeel and Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour from 2009–2013. The duo also performed in Tireless, a curated show by Michelle Dorrance that had its debut at Jacob’s Pillow in 2017. She is also a part of Dorrance’s all-woman quartet that created two works entitled Until the Real Comes Along and All Good Things Must Come and End. In addition, she was a co-creator with Michelle Dorrance and Hannah Heller of a Christmas work entitled The Nutcracker Suite in 2019, and in 2020, she created and directed a work for film featuring the vernacular jazz and tap dance entitled, Harlem Stomp. Most recently, in collaboration with jazz trumpeter extraordinaire, Keyon Harrold, she created her latest work entitled Praise: The Inevitable Fruit of Gratitude. It had its debut at Jacob’s Pillow and the Queens Theatre in the Park in 2021. Josette Wiggan-Freund is a sought after educator, choreographer, performer, and director, who has dedicated her life to the perpetuation of African American Vernacular Jazz Dance.
Joseph Wiggan Joseph Wiggan was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He began tap dance with Paul and Arlene Kennedy at the age of 9. Mr. Wiggan has performed in the American tour of Riverdance; Imagine Tap!; À la Recherche de Joséphine; and made his Broadway debut in Shuffle Along. Other credits include Cirque du Soleil's Banana Shpeel and Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour; N.Y.C.C. Encores: The New Yorkers; and This Joint Is Jumpin at The Other Palace. As a teacher Mr. Wiggan has shared his artistry with people in Sweden, Japan, France, Guatemala, and Australia, among others. He has been a cultural exchange performer in Cuba, Peru, and Russia. Mr. Wiggan has been a guest performer in live concert with Chester Whitmore, Orlando Poleo, Allen Hoist, the late Roy Hargrove, Johnny O’Neal, Gunhild Carling, Mike Phillips, Lafayette Harris Jr., Alice Gi-Young Hwang, Wynton Marsalis, Spike Wilner, the late Geri Allen, The Garth Newel Piano Quartet, Marcus Strickland, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, and Jacques Lesure. The experiences on the bandstand with these particular musicians inspired Joseph to lead his own band with a focus on the lineage of Black Music in America and abroad. Mr. Wiggan works as a member of The Double J’s, a tap duo act Wiggan-Freund that includes his sister. The Double J’s have performed in Frankie 100 at The Apollo; Tap Ellington at The Appel Room; TrailBlazer Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show; Tireless: A Tap Dance Experience at Jacob’s Pillow; Dorrance Dance The Blues Project at Vail Dance Festival, and The Nutcracker Suite at the Joyce Theater. RECOVERED VOICES
schulhoff & more an original online series
Presented by the Colburn School’s Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices, this four-part online series featuring James Conlon delves into the life and music of Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942). Schulhoff ’s life and career are emblematic of the vitality not only of his own work, but that of two generations of composers whose lives, careers, and legacies were profoundly disrupted during— and following—the years 1933–1945 as a result of Nazi repression. Special thanks to LA Opera’s Recovered Voices project.
This series is free and available to the public.
