Director’s Welcome Welcome to Colchester Zoo's magazine, full of the latest news not only from around the Zoo, but also around the world through our charity Action for the Wild, and our reserve in South Africa. We do hope that you enjoy the new look to the magazine and are able to visit us soon.
It has been a busy winter for the maintenance team getting the new Chimpanzee Lookout ready for our group of chimps, as well as some exciting changes around the park, including updates to many of the catering facilities.
We hope to welcome you to Registered Charity No. 1105621
soon for an enjoyable day out!
Many people underestimate the huge amount of work that our dedicated staff put into ensuring that Colchester Zoo is a leading conservation centre, a vital resource for education and research, and a superb day out! It costs over £189,000 every week to enable Colchester Zoo to open its doors and fund its conservation work around the world. This would be impossible without the support of our visitors and passholders; Colchester Zoo is a privately owned zoo and receives no external funding. Each and every visit you make counts.

Sainsbury’s Stanway supports Colchester Zoo! On Monday 27th February, 7 colleagues from the Sainsbury’s Stanway store, with their manager, Kevin Jones, joined the keepers team at Colchester Zoo. The store has supported the Zoo for many years through donating daily produce waste for the animals, in line with their company value of “no food waste to landfill.”
1. CHILDREN: In a small bowl, mix together the salsa and sweetcorn. 2. CHILDREN: Spread the wrap with the sweetcorn salsa mixture, then top with the chicken slices and lettuce. 3. ADULTS: Roll up tightly, then slice the wrap in half on the diagonal to serve.
Sainsbury’s named the most sustainable seafood supermarket in the world! Sainsbury’s has been named the best sustainable seafood supermarket in the world in a survey published by the Marine Stewardship Council. During 2016 Sainsbury’s reached not only the top spot in Britain but also the number one position worldwide with the most MSC-labelled products of any national supermarket – a total of 225 MSC-certified sustainable choices.

The day consisted of many activities for the colleagues, which started with the store team meeting the penguins and learning more about their keeper’s role. The team then helped the sun bear keepers with relaying the floor in their house, which proved to be challenging, but it was great to see the Sainsbury’s team more than happy to put their man power to work as it provided extra stimulation for the bears. The Sainsbury’s team then created a toy for the elephants, using recycled fire hose. This was a great team building exercise for the Sainsbury’s colleagues, and fantastic to recycle otherwise unwanted materials. The day was finished off with private feeding sessions with the giraffes and elephants, where the Sainsbury’s team learnt more about the zoo’s work and care of animals in-situ and ex-situ.

STATUS: Endangered; only around 540 Amur tigers are left in the wild.
On the 8th February 2017, Colchester Zoo welcomed a 2 year old female Amur Tiger named Taiga. The Zoo is already home to male tiger, Igor, and another female called Anoushka. Taiga will spend some time settling in before gradually being introduced to Igor with the hope they may become a breeding pair!

Yeni the pygmy hippo calf born on 22nd January has sadly passed away at just over 5 weeks old. On the morning of Tuesday 28th February, keepers found Yeni in an unresponsive state and witnessed Yeni’s mum, Venus, nudging her for movement. Unfortunately, it became clear that Yeni had passed away at some stage in the early hours of the morning.

A post mortem was carried out and results showed that Yeni had a compacted stomach, which unfortunately could not have been predicted by her keepers or treated even if she had shown any signs. It is hoped that in the future Venus and Freddie will have another offspring.
We have been overwhelmed with the condolences received following the tragic loss of Yeni. We would like to thank you all for your support during this very sad time. Although Yeni wasn’t with us long, the keepers had built a great relationship with her and she will always have a special place in our hearts here at Colchester Zoo.

The Orangutan Foundation is just one of the many projects Action for the Wild supports, having donated £5,000 in 2016 for a veterinarian’s salary and associated translocation costs necessary to perform a number of orangutan rescues.
conservation, research and education projects have been supported globally by Action for the Wild!
Thanks to Action for the Wild’s support in 2016, the Foundation has been able to rescue 25 orangutans and conducted 29 rescues of other wildlife species. They were also able to plant 16,000 Ubar tree seedlings, nurtured and planted to restore areas of the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve damaged by forest fires in 2015. In July, the construction of a new guard post began. Now up and running, this guard post is critical for the protection of the new 8,000 hectare extension of the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve.

17
F U N FA CT S Why are zebras stripy? Some people think it helps the zebra keep their temperature the same; the different colour stripes heat and cool at different rates.
why do wolves howl? Wolves point their head upwards to howl so that the sound travels further, especially if they are surrounded by trees. Their calls give different pieces of information to other wolves; it may be a cry for help from other pack members, a way of letting other wolves know where an individual is and a warning to outsiders to stay off their patch!
Others think the stripes stop horrid tsetse flies from landing on their bodies and biting them. The last reason is for camouflage against each other in a herd, making it harder for predators to pick out an individual to hunt!
What makes a penguin waterproof?
Penguins have a special gland at the bottom of their backs that contain lots of oily liquid that they rub onto their beak and use to preen themselves.
Where are a butterfly’s ears? Different species of butterfly species have ears on different parts of the body, including legs, mouth and even their wings! Although their ears look very different to ours, they work in the same way but they can hear things that we cannot.
Some moths, for example, have hearing tuned into the high frequency sounds that bats make so they can avoid them!

Meet Neil! Neil was born in South Africa and has always had a passion for the African bush. He started his wildlife career as a safari guide before moving on to game and reserve management with an emphasis on anti-poaching.
He brings a wealth of experience to his position at UmPhafa and, along with wife Aby, is dedicated to the development of the project.
Meet Aby! Aby was born in the UK but moved to South Africa after a trip to Namibia in 2011, which encouraged her to leave her corporate finance job in England and train as a field guide in South Africa!
Aby has since gained experience in running a conservation volunteer programme and is excited to be working alongside husband Neil once again as they live and work at Colchester Zoo’s UmPhafa Reserve!
