Welcome

Dear friends of football, Welcome to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015! One of the pillars of FIFA’s mission is to touch the world through our tournaments and we take great pride in staging these entertaining and unique festivals of football across the globe. Chile has a long tradition in successfully organising FIFA tournaments, including the 1962 FIFA World Cup™, the FIFA U-20 World Cup 1987 and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2008. Earlier this year, Chile also memorably hosted the Copa América, lifting the trophy in front of their home fans and earning themselves a place at the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017. We are very pleased to be working with this proud footballing nation once again and confident that the event will not only be a success, but will also leave a lasting legacy for youth football development within the country. At FIFA, we believe that football is more than just a game. Football has the power and reach to transform lives, to inspire communities and to break down barriers to social development. Bearing this in mind, we would especially like to commend and welcome the Syrian team to this year’s event. We would also like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to all those involved in the organisation of this tournament, especially to the Local Organising Committee. Special mention goes to our official commercial partners and suppliers, whose active support is a key element in the development and promotion of our wonderful sport, as well as to the volunteers, whose contribution is essential in order to make the event a success. We would like to welcome the participating member associations as well as the fans, referees and media representatives and wish them every success over the coming weeks. For the Game. For the World.

Issa Hayatou Acting FIFA President

Sunil Gulati Chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015

Bienvenidos

Welcome

Welcome to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015! For the Local Organising Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 – that I’m honored to preside – as well as the Football Federation of Chile, is very pleasurable to welcome you to our country, stage of this important international competition that will reunite 24 participant countries and 504 young players, many of which start their professional development in world football and will convert into the stars of tomorrow. 52 matches will be played, in eight venues, from La Serena and Coquimbo in the north of the country, to Puerto Montt at the south, through Viña del Mar, Santiago, Talca, Chillán and Concepción. Namely, a worldwide tournament will arrive to cities that are not frequent to live this type of sport events and will allow that players and visitors, between October 17 and November 8, to travel much of the country, check out its natural beauties, meet our culture and feel the warm hospitality that will offer the people of Chile, flaunting, once again, of its traditional condition as an outstanding host. Also, with this we are serving one of the principal wishes that we proposed ourselves as Local Organising Committee, beside the Football Federation and the Government of Chile: the decentralization of this huge sport event, bringing the 95 percent of the matches outside the capital Santiago, to different regions of the country. During the organisation of this contest, we have been working together FIFA in coordination with national and local authorities, the Football Federation of Chile and sport clubs to bring a World Cup of excellence that will leave an important legacy for the country, not just in terms of image and organisation, but also with trained professionals to organize this type of events and infrastructure improvements. We hope that every match is a party of football. That the 24 national teams give 100 percent in the field and make from this event a healthy and friendly competition were the winner is the best. We cordially invite all to enjoy your stay in Chile and participate in this tournament that we are sure will be “A party on our pitch”. Feel all very welcomed Cristián Varela Noguera Chairman Local Organising Committee

Bienvenidos

Official Emblem The Official Emblem demonstrates Chile’s unique and diverse natural beauty as well as its strong sense of hospitality and solidarity. The design is based on the shape of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Official Trophy. The main colours are the colours of the Chilean flag – red, blue and white – and are complemented by green, which represents vitality and naturalness. The dynamic sea and the waves serve as the base of the Emblem. The mountains with its drive upwards represent the Andes and the power of football. The human chain stands for fair play and is created in the style of indigenous patterns. All those elements aim is together to the lone white star on top, which is a part of the national flag. Reaching for the stars is every player's dream and the inspiration for this dynamic design.

Official Mascot Mascots are an ever more prominent presence at sporting competitions nowadays and even more so at FIFA competitions, whatever the category or age level. The tournament’s Official Mascot aims to show the event’s joyful, festive side, and this young Chilean boy, who will represent both the host nation and the young players taking part in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, will be no exception. Brochico, a nickname he has had for as long as he can remember, has always been very talented and skilful on the ball, qualities that meant he could hold his own during long afternoons of football – even with older children. His abundant ability earned him the respect of his colleagues and soon, the player initially dubbed cabro chico, local slang for ‘little kid’, was being asked to play so often that a shorter nickname was required – thus ‘Brochico’ came about. A sporty, active youngster, with an unlimited thirst for football, Brochico is perfect for sharing a pitch and, ideally, a team with, as his leadership and charisma rub off on those around him. So much so that, despite starting out as a striker, as time has gone by he has taken on a deeper, more creative role, ending up as a midfielder with an unerring eye for supplying goalscoring opportunities. Deeply proud of his country, Brochico could hardly be a more ideal representative of Chile at this year’s youth showpiece. For one thing, blue and red are his favourite colours, particularly when combined with white and put together in an outfit in the colours of the Chilean national flag. Brochico is also eagerly looking forward to welcoming the players and fans of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, so he can show them the diversity of the Chilean landscape of which he is so proud. An area spanning over 1,400 km in length, from the region of Coquimbo all the way down to the region of Los Lagos, will contain the competition’s host cities – which are sure to extend their own unique brands of hospitality to visitors from home and abroad.

Designers Manufacturer Design story

Jane Powell, Thomas Fattorini Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Birmingham, UK The creative idea behind the design was an attempt to visualise football as a contact sport requiring equal measures of strength, athleticism and poise. These elements are symbolised by the Official Trophy's two supports at full stretch, making contact with the football in a competitive spirit. The structure is at the same time strong but delicate, affording the viewer a sense of spectacle featuring two opposing teams. The international dimension of the event is represented by the globe in the shape of a football – a consistent feature amongst almost all of FIFA's event trophies.

Format The format of the teenage tournament has always aimed to give all confederations an equal chance, especially in this developing age group. In order to give associations from each confederation the opportunity to flex their muscles against their contemporaries from all corners of the globe, three teams from each confederation and one from Oceania have been allowed to qualify. As of 2007, the number of contenders was increased from 16 to 24: AFC 4, CAF 4, CONCACAF 4, CONMEBOL 4 (plus 1 slot for host Chile), UEFA 6, OFC 1. From 1985 to 1993, matches were played over two 40-minute halves (extra time was ten minutes each way). In Ecuador in 1995, the standard duration of matches was increased to the traditional format of 45 minutes per half (with 15 minutes per half in extra time). In 2011, the Executive Committee abolished extra time for the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a proposal put forward by the Medical Committee and the FIFA Task Force Football 2014. FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Event History

A glance over recent years serves to illustrate how the organisers of the past nine championships endowed each one with an individual flavour. China PR 1985 The inaugural FIFA under-16 competition in 1985, the first international tournament ever to be held in China PR, witnessed stadia filled to capacity, while the Workers' Stadium in Beijing, with a capacity of 80,000, was packed to the rafters no fewer than four times. African supremacy, which was to leave its mark on championships in the ensuing years, began to assert itself in China PR, with Nigeria the winners and Guinea semi-finalists. Canada 1987 The sprawling cities of Toronto and Montreal and the picturesque provincial venues of St John (New Brunswick) and St John's (Newfoundland) provided the backdrop to the 2nd FIFA Under-16 World Tournament in Canada in 1987. Nigeria were on the verge of repeating their 1985 triumph in a thrilling final only to be downed by the Soviet Union in the penalty shoot-out. Scotland 1989 This was the turn of the first European country, namely Scotland, with its long and sophisticated tradition in professional football, to host this FIFA championship. At the memorable final in Glasgow's Hampden Park, a crowd of more than 50,000 watched transfixed as the home team, two goals up at half-time, allowed Saudi Arabia to creep up on them and beat them by a hair's breadth on penalties after goalless extra time. Italy 1991 The Italian association pulled off a feat of organisational prowess at very short notice when it managed to arrange yet another "Italian summer". A series of unforgettable matches at six venues scattered all over Tuscany, culminating in a technically superior, irresistible winner from Ghana was the mark of this first FIFA U-17 World Championship. As of 1991, the age limit for the tournament was raised from U-16 to U-17. Japan 1993 In autumn 1993 (shortly after the triumphant start of the J League), Japan proved itself to be a perfect and, above all, technologically superb organiser. Nigeria beat Ghana 2-1 in the final, setting new standards in technique and tactics for this age category.

Event History

Ecuador 1995 Ghana’s youngsters made it three in a row for Africa as they swept to a thrilling 3-2 victory against Brazil in the final of the 1995 World Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Egypt 1997 Brazil became the first South American team to win the Under-17 World Championship and to add the FIFA/JVC Cup to its unparalleled list of international honours. In a remake of the 1995 Under-17 final in Ecuador, Brazil encountered Ghana but this time the roles were reversed. While two years earlier the Africans had had the upper hand, winning 3-2 in the final, this time it was Brazil who came out on top, coming from a goal behind to snatch a dramatic victory from the Cup-holders. Africa became the only continent to ensure all three teams made it to the last eight. New Zealand 1999 On a day when football in New Zealand set a record for crowd attendance, Brazil just edged out Australia 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out to retain the FIFA U-17 World Championship crown. A crowd of 22,859 spectators crammed the Stadium to watch. The Aussies, who had made it to their first ever final of a FIFA tournament, came close to taking the shine off Brazil with a couple of excellent goal-scoring chances. Trinidad & Tobago 2001 France won their first FIFA U-17 World Championship in comprehensive fashion, leading throughout the entire tournament with the lethal strike partnership of Sinama Pongolle and Le Tallec. Sinama Pongolle became the all-time top scorer in a FIFA U-17 World Championship with nine goals.

Finland 2003 Brazil triumphed 1-0 over courageous Spain in Helsinki’s Töölö stadium to become World Champions for the third time. Though the eventful final produced the strike that equalled the all-time record for most goals at a single FIFA U-17 World Championship (117 – Egypt 97), the match did not live up to the raucous goalscoring standards set at the 2003 edition of the tournament. As always, the Championship showcased a wealth of young talent, with USA’s remarkable 14-year-old Freddy Adu leaving a lasting impression. 8

Event History

Peru 2005 After Ecuador in 1995, Peru became the second South American country to host the FIFA U-17 World Championship. With total attendance figures of over half a million spectators, Peru 2005 is in third place in the all-time FIFA U-17 World Championship ranking behind China PR 1985 and Egypt 1997. Triumphant Mexico sealed their first FIFA World Championship title at youth level in their long footballing history, defeating Brazil by a clear-cut 3-0 scoreline in the final. Korea Republic 2007 In 2007, the tournament was held on Asian soil for the third time and, having scaled the heights at China 1985 and Japan 1993, Nigeria left the continent with their third global crown. The Golden Eaglets also completed a virtual clean sweep of all the other accolades up for grabs at Korea 2007. After edging past Spain on penalties in the Final, they also boasted the adidas Golden Shoe and adidas Silver Ball winner – Macauley Chrisantus. Nigeria 2009 This was the second time, following Egypt in 1997, that the FIFA U-17 World Cup had been held on African soil. Switzerland, who were taking part in their first FIFA U-17 World Cup, claimed the title with a 1-0 win over Nigeria in the final in Abuja. For the hosts and defending champions, the defeat meant that they narrowly missed out becoming the first country to win four U-17 crowns, a feat that would have seen them pull clear of Brazil. Mexico 2011 The tournament was hosted by CONCACAF for the third time following Canada in 1987 and Trinidad and Tobago in 2001. Defeating Uruguay 2-0 at the legendary Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, hosts Mexico claimed the title for the second time, the first being in 2005. Uruguay reached the final for the first time. United Arab Emirates 2013 The FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013 featured exciting matches and stunning results with the young Nigerians who claimed the trophy by overcoming Mexico in the final. Africans became the only country to win the tournament four times, surpassing the achievements of Brazil, crowned champions on three occasions.

The most goal-laden match in the U-17 FIFA World Cup was held in Ismailia (Egypt) in 1997, with Spain inflicting maximum damage by crushing New Zealand 13-0. However, other than sealing the Golden Shoe for David, the shower of goals reaped a meagre harvest: Spain were beaten in the semi-finals by eventual runners-up Ghana. With three titles and 44 wins in the under-17 age group, Brazil leads the all-time ranking. They reached the final three times in a row (1995, 1997 and 1999).

9

Six out of fifteen tournaments have been won by African teams – Ghana and Nigeria. Ghana reached the final four times in a row (1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997), winning twice (1991 and 1995). Nigeria has taken part in seven finals (1985, 1987, 1993, 2001, 2007, 2009 and 2013), winning four, in 1985, 1993, 2007, and 2013.

10 Brazil has made it to the final on five occasions (1995, 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2005), winning three times (in 1997, 1999 and 2003). 11 As for the number of times that teams have taken part, the USA (15) are practically evergreens. They are equal with Brazil (15) and ahead of Australia (12) and Argentina (13), all of whom are a step ahead of the other participants. 12 Throughout the history of the tournament, only Brazil has successfully defended their title (1997 in Egypt and 1999 in New Zealand). 13 The highest average number of goals per match was recorded during the 1997 and 2003 tournaments in Egypt and Finland (3.66 goals per match), followed by Peru 2005 (3.47) and Japan in 1993 (3.34). 14 Since the inaugural tournament in China PR, 560 matches have been hosted under the auspices of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. 15 In the overall history of the competition, Brazil has contested the most matches (70), followed by Argentina (58) and Nigeria (56).

11

Event History

16 The tournament’s most successful teams are Brazil (44 wins, 11 draws, 15 losses), Nigeria (40 wins, 11 draws, 5 losses) and Argentina (28 wins, 13 draws, 17 losses). 17 All in all, 13 different teams have qualified for the 15 finals. A selection of 29 sides, from every confederation, has reached the semi-finals, indicating a considerably level playing field in this age group. 18 In 1987, 1989, 1999 and 2007 the final match was decided on penalties and on each occasion, a team from a different confederation came out on top. All other finals were decided in regular time. 19 Teams from the same confederation have met in the final match only once, with Ghana playing Nigeria in the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup final. 2013

The past Only Brazil and USA have more FIFA U-17 World Cup appearances than Argentina’s 12. Though they have only failed to make the tournament three times, the last of them in 2005, La Albiceleste have yet to win it or even reach the final. Their best finish to date is third place, achieved in 1991, 1995 and 2003, while they have also taken fourth on two occasions, more recently in 2013. The present Argentina began the South American U-17 Championship in disappointing fashion, losing narrowly to Ecuador and Uruguay before hitting back with wins over Bolivia and Chile to finish third in Group B and advance to the final six-team round. They looked on course for the title after beating Brazil and overwhelming hosts Paraguay, but defeat to Uruguay and draws with Ecuador and Colombia meant they had to settle for the runner-up slot. The future After conceding four goals in their opening two matches in the continental finals, Miguel Angel Lemme’s side tightened things up at the back, conceding only five in their remaining seven games. The emergence of front-men Tomas Conechny and German Berterame, who started the tournament on the bench, also proved crucial to Argentina’s progress and augurs well for their bid to land the U-17 World Cup for the first time at Chile 2015.

Last FIFA U-17 World Cup participation

2011

The past Chile 2015 will be Australia’s 12th FIFA U-17 World Cup. Their best performance to date came at New Zealand 1999, when they finished runners-up after losing to Brazil on penalties in the final. On their last appearance, which came at Mexico 2011, the Aussies qualified for the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed sides in the group phase, but then went out after losing to Uzbekistan 4-0 in the last 16. Absent from the last U-17 world finals, held in the United Arab Emirates in 2013, the Australians have reached the quarter-finals on six occasions, the last of them coming at Trinidad and Tobago 2001. The present Australia got off to a fast start at the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship, winning all three of their Group B matches against China PR, Hong Kong and Japan, a perfect record that only Korea Republic were able to match. Tony Vidmar’s side secured their ticket to Chile with a 2-1 defeat of Malaysia in the quarter finals, though their run came to an end in the semis, where eventual champions Korea DPR beat them 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

28

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future A former international, Vidmar was appointed national U-17 team coach in 2013. He has since built the side around free-scoring front man Cameron Joice – the side’s leading marksman at the Asian finals – and midfielder Joe Caletti, who also wears the captain’s armband. Following his side’s qualification for Chile 2015, Vidmar said: “We’ve still got a lot to learn and 12 months in which to prepare for the World Cup.”

Former stars Mark Schwarzer, Danny Allsopp, Craig Moore, Brett Emerton, Harry Kewell, Brett Holman. Key players Cameron Joice, Joe Caletti, Jackson Bandiera, Jake Brimmer. The stat 8 The number of players who scored for Australia at the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship. Striker Cameron Joice led the way with four of the Aussies’ 12 goals, and finished the tournament as the third-highest scorer behind Syria’s Anas Al Aji and Korea DPR’s Han Kwang-Song.

The past Belgium’s only previous FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance came at Korea 2007, where they beat Tajikistan but lost to Tunisia and USA, finishing bottom in their group. The present The Belgians were in sparkling form at the UEFA European U-17 Championship in Bulgaria, earning two wins in Group B, where only eventual runners-up Germany got the better of them. Les Diablotins then beat Croatia on penalties in the last eight, though luck deserted them in a semi-final shootout against France. The Belgians can nevertheless take heart from the fact that they caused the champions more problems than anyone else in the whole competition. The future “Reaching the semi-finals is a major success for Belgium, which is only a small country” said coach Bob Browaeys after his side’s exploits in Bulgaria. Small nation or not, Belgium is continuing to produce top-class footballers at a prodigious rate, as evidenced by the impressive performances of this latest generation, who will pose a formidable test to their opponents in Chile.

The Brazilians have also finished runners-up twice, in 1995 and 2005, and took third place in 1985. The present The mighty Brazilians did not have things all their own way in Group A of the South American U-17 Championship. After kicking off with a win over Colombia and a draw with Paraguay, they went down to Venezuela, and though they recovered with a handsome defeat over Peru, they had to be content with second place in the section. A second loss of the competition followed against Argentina in the opening match of the final six-team round. Then came three consecutive narrow wins against Ecuador, Uruguay and Paraguay, a run that was good enough to secure an 11th continental title for the Brazilians, though Colombia spoiled the party somewhat by inflicting another defeat on them in their final outing. The future While Brazil racked up the second-highest goal tally at the South American finals with 18, scoring in seven of their nine games, they also conceded 14, the second-worst defensive record of the four qualifiers from the CONMEBOL Zone. Coach Carlos Amadeu will most likely.

The past Chile are making their third FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance this year. Their debut came at Japan 1993, where they surprised everyone by finishing third, their best performance in the competition to date. They reached the finals again four years later, in Egypt, but went out in the group phase after scoring a solitary point. The present Though already assured of a place at this year’s finals on account of being the hosts, Chile took part in the qualifying tournament, the 2015 South American U-17 Championship. They failed to impress, however, finishing bottom of their group with four defeats in as many games and conceding 12 goals in the process. The future Appointed coach in the wake of that disappointing showing in the continental finals, Miguel Ponce set about the task of raising his players’ morale and making the side tighter at the back. At the other end of the pitch he is banking on the experienced Rene Melendez and Gabriel Mazuela to lead the line and revive Chilean fortunes.

The past In the four editions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup staged between 2001 and '07, Costa Rica was ever-present, emerging from their group on each occasion albeit without going past the quarter-finals. Those heady days, which now seem a long time ago, came to an end at Nigeria 2009, where just one point from three games had them on the first flight home. Worse was to follow, with the team failing to qualify for Mexico 2011 or UAE 2013. The present In a bid to rediscover the winning formula, Argentinian coach Marcelo Herrera, at the time overseeing Costa Rica’s national youth teams, took personal charge of the U-17 side in November 2014. Despite only beginning work with the squad in January this year, just two months later he and his young charges were celebrating qualification for Chile 2015 at the CONCACAF U-17 Championship. Los Ticos were drawn in Group B at the regional event, where they defeated Saint Lucia (4-0), Haiti (4-1) and Panama (2-0), drew with Mexico 1-1 and lost to Canada 3-2. Their third-place finish in the group earned them a play-off with Canada with a place in Chile up for grabs. This time Costa Rica came out on top, courtesy of strikes from Luis Hernandez, Andy Reyes and a Kosovar Sakiki own-goal.

The past Croatia have graced the FIFA U-17 World Cup twice before. Their debut came at Trinidad and Tobago 2001, where they went home early after losing to tournament heavyweights Australia and Brazil, this despite beating the hosts in their other pool match. It was a similar story for the Croatians at the last world finals in the age category, with defeats to Morocco and Uzbekistan and a solitary win over Panama condemning them to another first-round departure. The present The Croatians were solid in qualifying for the UEFA European U-17 Championship Bulgaria 2015, going unbeaten in both the qualifying and elite rounds. They kept that run going in the finals, defeating the hosts 2-0 and Austria 1-0 before drawing 0-0 with Spain to top their group. The eastern Europeans conceded their only goal of the tournament in the quarterfinals against Belgium, a game they eventually lost on penalties, though they bounced back to seal their place at Chile 2015 with a 1-0 win over Italy in the World Cup play-offs. The future Dario Basic’s side can take a lot of satisfaction from their impressive showing at the continental finals, and with a high-quality squad at his disposal, he will be looking to build on their recent progress in Chile.

In hosting the world finals in the age category in 1995 they reached the last eight, their best performance to date. The last time they graced the competition was at Mexico 2011, where they advanced to the last 16 before going out to Brazil. The present Ecuador won more points than any other side at the 2015 South American U-17 Championship, amassing 17 in total, one more than champions Brazil. They also boasted the best goal difference: +8, well clear of Argentina’s +5. Wins over Argentina, Bolivia and Chile helped them to second place in their first-round group, where they also lost to Uruguay, a reverse they avenged in the final six-team round. Beaten only by Brazil in that final phase, the Ecuadorians made sure of their place in Chile with a 2-1 victory over Colombia in their penultimate match. The future Coach Jose Javier Rodriguez was the man in charge when Ecuador reached the Round of 16 at Mexico 2011, and his experience will be vital to their chances at Chile 2015, as will their ability to give as good as they get against quality opposition. Delighted with his charges’ performance in the qualifiers in Paraguay, Rodriguez is determined to see them kick on against the world’s best: “Qualifying for the finals is only the start. The past England’s first participation at a FIFA U-17 World Cup came at Korea Republic 2007, and they topped a group which included 2005 finalists Brazil to reach a quarter-final with Germany. That side, which included Danny Welbeck and Danny Rose, came unstuck in a 4-1 defeat. Four years later, coach John Peacock headed to Mexico with Raheem Sterling in his ranks, once more winning the group, before seeing off Argentina in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16. However, Germany saw off the Three Lions again in a tight quarter-final clash. The present Peacock was in charge of the side for their most recent UEFA qualifying campaign after their impressive UEFA U-17 Championship win in 2014. England won all six of their preliminary games to reach the final tournament in Bulgaria, where the Three Lions topped their group to set up a quarter-final with Russia. A 1-0 defeat meant a play-off against Spain, which ended goalless. A penalty shootout victory saw reserve goalkeeper Will Huffer save Dani Olmo’s spot kick, allowing Easah Suliman to score the penalty that sent England to Chile. The future Experienced coach Peacock departed the role after guiding the side to Chile to take up a position at English second tier team Derby County. The FA announced that current England U-18 head coach Neil Dewsnip, who helped develop talents like Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley at Everton, will be the man to lead the U-17 squad in Chile.

The past With only four appearances in 15 finals competitions, France can hardly be described as FIFA U-17 World Cup regulars. Yet as they showed in winning the title at Trinidad and Tobago 2001 after a 14-year absence from the competition, a lack of pedigree is no obstacle to success at this age level. That achievement, secured by a side containing the likes of Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, was the only occasion on which Les Bleuets, who missed out on a place at UAE 2013, have progressed beyond the quarter-final stage. The present This is the first time since their tournament debut in 1987 that the French will head into the world finals in the age category as European champions. Les Bleuets put together a perfect campaign in the continental finals in Bulgaria, winning all three of their group matches without conceding a goal, beating Italy 3-0 in the quarter-finals, seeing off Belgium on penalties in the semis and sweeping Germany aside 4-1 in the final. The future “This team came here to achieve a great result, but that’s not the most important thing. What counts is to play good football,” said France coach Jean-Claude Giuntini following their European title success. Should his charges reproduce the same kind of form in Chile, they will be very hard to beat. Packed with hugely promising players, Giuntini’s side bears comparison with the famous Generation of '87, a team that featured the likes of Karim Benzema, Samir Nasri and Hatem Ben Arfa and which won the continental crown in 2004.

The past Though Germany are not U-17 World Cup regulars, they do have a creditable record in the competition and fell to the eventual champions on each of their last three appearances. At Korea 2007 they went down 3-1 to Nigeria in the semi-finals, and lost 4-3 to Switzerland after extra time in the Round of 16 two years later. Then, at their last U-17 world finals in Mexico in 2011, the Germans succumbed 3-2 to the hosts in the last four, though they did go on to finish third, as they also did in 2007. World finalists on five other occasions, they took fourth place at Egypt 1997 and, as West Germany, reached the quarter-finals at Scotland 1989 and finished runners-up at China PR 1985, their best performance to date. The present Germany went into the UEFA European U-17 Championship Bulgaria 2015 as one of the favourites. They justified that billing by winning all their games en route to the final without conceding a single goal, though they did need a penalty shoot-out to see off Spain in the quarters. In the group phase the Germans recorded respective 2-0, 1-0 and 4-0 wins over Belgium, Slovenia and Czech Republic before seeing off Russia 1-0 in the semis. France proved to be too tough a nut to crack in the final, however, as Christian Wuck’s side slipped to a 4-1 defeat. “We had a very good tournament,” Germany defender Daniel Nesseler told UEFA.com afterwards. “Of course it hurts to lose in the final, but we can take a lot of positives from our performances and we can now look forward to the World Cup. We need to use what we've learned here to shape our future.”

The past Chile 2015 will be the fourth time that Guinea participates in the showpiece event of U-17 football. Le Syli Cadet share the distinction (with Nigeria and Congo) of being the first African countries to participate at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. And they did so with distinction, as two victories, two draws and two defeats saw them finish the 1985 tournament in China PR in fourth place. Four years later they were again among the 16 best U-17 teams in Scotland, and although they did not lose any of their three group games, they also failed to win and were knocked out in the first round. The third time Guinea qualified for the U-17 World Cup was in 1995, when they beat Portugal, but were seen off by Argentina and Costa Rica and failed to advance. The present Guinea won four preliminary qualifiers, two each against Morocco and Togo, en route to the African Championships in Niger. There they continued their winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Zambia in their opening match. A draw in their next game against pre-tournament favourites Nigeria opened the door to the semi-finals and although they lost their final group game against the hosts, they still qualified for the round of the last four and a place in Chile. They lost in the semi-finals against Mali, but ended the tournament on a high with a 3-1 victory against Nigeria in the play-off for third place.

The past Honduras’ involvement in the FIFA U-17 World Cup has been a relatively recent one. After watching the first 20 years of the tournament from afar, Los Catrachos graced the event for the first time at Korea Republic 2007. And while the Central Americans lost all three of their games there, it left them determined to try again. At Nigeria 2009 they again bowed out after the group phase but, after missing out on Mexico 2011, Honduras went all the way to the quarter-finals at UAE 2013, where they lost 2-1 to Switzerland. The present As hosts of the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, Honduras could not have hoped for a better start. In their opening three fixtures in Group A, they overcame Jamaica (2-0) and Trinidad and Tobago (2-0) and drew with Cuba (1-1). They followed that with a 2-2 draw against USA before rounding off the phase with a 2-1 win over of Guatemala. That victory over their neighbours not only guaranteed Honduras top spot in their section and a berth at Chile 2017, but also a place in the regional decider against Mexico, who would emerge 3-0 winners. The future One of the keys to the side’s sustained success in recent years has undoubtedly been their coach, Jose Valladares. After taking the U-17 helm in late 2011, he led the side to a last-eight finish in the UAE, and his aim is to continue in the same vein at Chile 2015. “We have to work harder every day as we need to improve in every area. Football is not just about running. We’re fortunate enough to have now qualified for back-to-back World Cups, and we enjoyed the previous edition,” the coach said. 50

The past While Korea DPR have established themselves as a major power at this age level in Asia over the past decade, it is long-term planning that has borne fruit. The Youth Chollima's first bid for the FIFA U-17 World Cup dates back to the Asian qualifiers in 1986. However, the maiden qualification didn't come until 2004 when they finished the Asian campaign as runners-up. After emulating the same feat two years later, they won their first continental title in 2010 to seal their FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance at Mexico 2011. They have twice progressed beyond the group phase, storming to the second round in 2005 and 2007. The present Taking heart from their achievements over recent years, Korea DPR entered the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship seeking to cement their place among Asia's best. Yon Kwang-mu's charges opened brightly with a 3-0 rout of Kuwait and despite being edged out 3-2 by defending champions Uzbekistan, they demolished Nepal 4-1 to seal their place in the knockout stage. They showcased their unity and fight-spirit with two penalty shoot-out victories – over Iran and Australia – to lift Yon's side through to the final. Korea DPR maintained their form in the tournament’s ultimate game, outmuscling Korea Republic 2-1 to lift the trophy for a second time.

Also worth mentioning are goalkeeper Ri Chol Song, whose heroics helped achieve two penalty shoot-out triumphs. Armed with such talents, it is natural for coach Yon to voice optimism for next year's FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. "Their skill and technique and their determination has developed," he said, "We will prepare well and show Asia's development at the World Cup."

Recent years have seen them participate in the global competition more frequently, playing in the 2006 edition as hosts before progressing to Nigeria 2009 after finishing as runners-up in the continental qualifier. They have twice progressed beyond the group stage in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, making it to the last eight in 1987 and 2009. The present Korea Republic had a smooth qualifying campaign. They made light work of the group competition, progress with three straight victories against Oman (3-1), Malaysia (1-0) and Thailand (2-0). Striking-ace Lee Seungwoo would complete a brace as they swept past Japan to reach the last four and thus qualify for Chile 2015. The past Mali enjoyed a run of their only three appearances at the finals of the FIFA U-17 World Cup consecutively, starting in 1997 and ending in 2001, but since then they have been absent from the showpiece event. In 1997 Les Aiglonnets were only denied a place in the semi-finals by a penalty shoot-out against Germany when Seydou Keita, who went on to win international fame and played for clubs like Marseille, Barcelona and Roma, missed his side's fifth penalty. Two years later they crashed out in the first round, but in the 2001 edition they again came agonizingly close to a place amongst the top four, but were denied by Argentina, who won 2-1 after extra-time. The present Mali only qualified for the finals of the African championships due to an administrative mistake made by Benin, who fielded four ineligible players in the first round of qualifying. But in Niger, the Malians had few problems, topping their group after victories against Cameroon (3-1) and Côte d'Ivoire (1-0) and drawing with South Africa (2-2). That saw them secure their ticket to Chile, but there was more on offer as they beat Guinea 2-1 in the semi-finals and outplayed South Africa to win their first-ever continental trophy with a 2-0 victory in the final match.

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future The success in Niger brought on huge celebrations back home with the country's president leading the way, saying: "I am proud of these young players who planted the Malian flag on the roof of Africa during the competition.” The whole country is now looking for more success in Chile and coach Baye Bah has said that they will go to South America to valiantly defend African football. “We will respect all our opponents, but our goal is to go as far as possible. My players have the determination to compete in the semi-final or even the final of the World Cup.”

The past While in charge of the national U-17 team between 2010 and 2013, Raul Gutierrez continued the golden era that began with Mexico’s victory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru 2005. In leading El Tri to their second world title on home soil in 2011 – secured with victory over Uruguay in an overflowing Estadio Azteca – Gutierrez proved that the 2005 success was no fluke, but rather the product of great work done at youth level in his homeland. Two years later in the UAE, Gutierrez and his charges almost repeated the feat, only to lose 3-0 to a great Nigeria side in the final. The present When Gutierrez left the U-17 set-up, the man brought in to replace him and oversee the transition was Mario Arteaga. As five-time CONCACAF champions, the new incumbent knew that as well as securing a World Cup berth at the U-17 Championship in Honduras, he was obliged to deliver another regional crown. His charges duly secured their place at Chile 2015 and in the regional final after victories over Panama (3-1), Saint Lucia (6-0) and Haiti (2-0), and draws with Canada (1-1) and Costa Rica (1-1) won them Group B. A sixth CONCACAF title then followed a few days later with a 3-0 defeat of Honduras in the decider.

58

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future As he continues his preparations for Chile 2015, Artega has to shoulder the lofty expectations of a nation that has celebrated two world titles and one runners-up spot in the category in the last decade. However, the coach insisted the past successes could be a spur for his side, saying: “There’s no pressure – the previous teams have already won their titles. They’ve simply proved to us that it can be done and we can win things. This current crop have enormous desire to succeed and are committed to achieving something big.”

The past Chile 2015 will mark New Zealand’s seventh participation in the FIFA U-17 World Cup. It is a tournament in which New Zealand arguably has more historical pedigree than any other FIFA event, even if 2013 proved to be a disappointment. Their debut was at Egypt 1997 in what was one of the nation’s first FIFA competitions. Two years later New Zealand played host to the tournament; the first to be held in Oceania, aside from those hosted by former OFC member Australia. More recently, New Zealand’s team at Nigeria 2009 etched their name into the nation’s football annals by becoming the first Kiwi team to progress to the knockout phase of a FIFA tournament. They repeated the feat at Mexico 2011 providing further proof of a flourishing talent production line. The present New Zealand endured a tough qualifying competition, tested by both the opposition and the physical challenge. The Young All Whites tackled a relentless schedule of seven matches in 14 days during the Samoa and American Samoa-based competition. As it transpired they won all their matches until the final, racking up 34 goals en route to the decider. They did, however, need to call on some trademark Kiwi resilience to see off New Caledonia 5-4 in the group stage, and then were pushed all the way by Tahiti in the final before prevailing on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

60

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future Impressive and mature showings at the past two FIFA U-17 tournaments are strong evidence of the nation’s ongoing development over recent years. Under young new coach Jose Figueira, New Zealand plays an aggressive brand of football both with and without the ball. The current crop features all domestic based players, however the level of teamwork and cohesion on display during qualifying indicates the value provided by many of the team playing together for Wanderers SC in the domestic national youth league.

The past The only word to describe Nigeria's past in the FIFA U-17 World Cup is glorious. No other country has won the tournament as often as the Golden Eaglets (four times) and only Brazil can match their seven semi-final appearances. Remarkably, the team has made it through to the decider every time they advanced to the last four. The west Africans won the inaugural competition in China PR in 1985 and added titles in 1993, 2007 and last time out. They lost the 1987, 2001 and 2009 finals. The only time they qualified for the global event but failed to progress out of the group stage was in 2003, when they were denied a place in the last eight by the drawing of lots after finishing equal on points, goals and goal difference with Costa Rica. The present As overwhelming pre-tournament favourites the Golden Eaglets had an easy passage into the last four at the African championships, thereby booking their place in Chile 2015. Victories over hosts Niger (2-0) and Zambia (3-1) and a 1-1 draw against Guinea saw them top the group. However, in the semi-finals, the west Africans were stunned by an impressive South African team, who grabbed a first-half goal and then held on to their win. And though Nigeria lost the play-off for third place against Guinea 3-1, coach Emmanuel Amuneke said they had achieved their objective and would expect to be at their best in the world finals.

62

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future Surprisingly, the Golden Eaglets have been more successful on the global stage than in Africa. It is not something that surprises Amuneke, who says that the conditions at the World Cup are more suitable to his side but has naturally been focused on his young team. ”For us to be champions of the world, we have to prepare very well. We have been trying to correct some of the mistakes and lapses we noticed in Niger.”

The past Chile 2015 is only Paraguay’s third world finals appearance in the age category, the first of them coming at New Zealand 1999, where they reached the quarter-finals before going down to a heavy defeat to Brazil. The second came two years later at Trinidad and Tobago 2001 and ended with elimination in the group phase. The present Paraguay hosted the 2015 South American U-17 Championship and made an impressive start by going undefeated in Group A, where they beat Venezuela and Peru and drew with Brazil and Colombia. La Albirroja beat the Colombians again in their opening match in the final six-team round but then fell to Argentina and Brazil. A draw with Ecuador left them needing to beat Uruguay in their last match to book the fourth and final ticket to Chile 2015, a goal they achieved with a hard-fought 2-1 win. The future Coached by Carlos Jara Saguier, the man who took Paraguay to silver at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004, La Albirroja showed plenty of attacking power in the continental finals but struggled to contain their opponents at the back. In total they shipped 15 goals in their nine matches, more than any of their three fellow qualifiers for Chile 2015, where Jara Saguier will be hoping to make them a harder side to break down.

As Russia, the team has qualified once for the U-17 global finals, as European champions in 2013. They won one match in the UAE and exited the competition with a 3-1 defeat to three-time champions Brazil in the Round of 16. The present Sbornaya reached the UEFA U-17 Championship final tournament with an unbeaten run through qualifying, and showed resilience in Bulgaria. Despite only reaching the knockout stages ahead of Greece on goal difference, thanks to a 2-0 victory against Scotland in their final group game when down to ten men, they defeated holders England in the quarterfinals, before narrowly succumbing to Germany in the semi-finals.

The past South Africa has been a perennial under-achiever at U-17 level and Chile 2015 will be the first time that the Amajimbos have qualified for the global event. Their performance on the continental stage has not been that much better and they have only twice participated at the finals of the African U-17 championships. Their previous-best performance came in 2005 when they advanced to the semi-finals but lost to Gambia and then lost the play-off for third place against Côte d'Ivoire, thereby denying themselves a place at the World Cup finals. The present Like most of the other coaches Molefi Ntseki said that his main aim in at the CAF qualifiers in Niger was to reach the World Cup finals. His team managed that by holding Mali and Côte d'Ivoire to 2-2 draws and beating Cameroon 3-1 in the group stage. The South Africans then stunned Nigeria 1-0 in the semi-finals but lost the championship match 2-0 against Mali. “I believe what we achieved is the best performance by the team thus far, so I am very satisfied. Our mandate has been met, and this is good for the football of our country,” Ntseki said. The future For Ntseki the fact that they are World Cup rookies does count against them. “This will be motivation for us to work harder as a team and to reach our objectives. We will go to the World Cup to explore, experience and perform to our best ability. Being rookies is more of a motivation, rather than a set-back. This team has the potential to write their names in the history books of South Africa," said the coach, who admitted his side would probably learn a thing or two tactically from their experiences in Chile. 68

The past Syria are making their second FIFA U-17 World Cup appearance at Chile 2015. Their first was at Korea 2007, where they reached the last 16 after picking up four points to finish third in a tough group containing Spain, Argentina and Honduras. Though they lost 3-1 to England in the round of 16, the Syrians showed they could compete at the highest level. The present Syria made a slow start to the 2014 AFC U-16 Championship, drawing 0-0 with Saudi Arabia and then 1-1 with Qatar in their first two group games before taking on group leaders Iran, who had won both their opening matches. Mohamed Al Attar’s charges had a surprise in store for the Iranians, beating them 2-1 to clinch a place in the last eight. Waiting for them there were Uzbekistan, who were no match for the Syrians, with Abdulrahman Barakat scoring a hat-trick in a 5-2 win that secured their place at Chile 2015. The future In overseeing qualification for Chile 2015, coach Mohamed Al Attar has maintained Syria’s fine record at youth level, drawing on the goalscoring talents of Anas Al Aji and Abdulrahman Barakat, who scored four and three goals respectively at the Asian finals. Yet, as their heavy 7-1 semi-final defeat to Korea Republic showed, the Syrians will need to get their preparations just right if they are to make an impact at the world finals.

The past USA have participated in 14 of the first 15 editions of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, having only missed out in 2013. New Zealand 1999 has been the Stars and Stripes best showing to date at the U-17 World Cup, where they came in fourth place, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final after losing to Australia on penalties in the semi-finals. The Americans reached the quarter-finals on four other occasions, most recently at Peru 2005. Like many other countries who have participated at the U-17 World Cup, this tournament has helped launch the careers of some of the United States’ most successful footballers to date, including USA’s all-time leading scorer Landon Donovan. The present USA made qualifying for Chile 2015 harder than they would have preferred at the 2015 CONCACAF U-17 Championship in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The Americans missed out on the opportunity to seal automatic qualification by finishing atop Group A after losing 1-0 to Jamaica in their final match in the group stage, setting up a play-off – coincidentally against Jamaica – to take one of the last two spots to Chile 2015 from the CONCACAF zone. After a hard-fought, albeit goalless, 90 minutes, penalties were needed to decide the winner, which the Stars and Stripes narrowly edged the Jamaicans 5-4 after six rounds.

Participating Teams Team Profiles The future After sealing passage to Chile 2015, coach Richie Williams will be working with his squad in the build-up to their trip to South America to get ready for the World Cup. And while the Americans’ qualification never seemed certain, Williams was confident in his team after punching their ticket to Chile 2015. “My thoughts are, ‘We qualified for the World Cup.’ That’s what we came here to do,” Williams told U.S. Soccer after beating Jamaica on penalties. “I thought it was a great tournament. I thought we did very well, and I’m extremely proud of our players. They work extremely hard, they’re a good team. We had a couple setbacks, but they didn’t give up."

FIFA Sustainability

To ensure more sustainable organisation and more sustainable competitions, FIFA is implementing a number of social and environmental programmes at its events and around the world. Following an overview of the key projects and campaigns. For more information, visit www.fifa.com/sustainability. Football for Hope FIFA believes that football is more than just a game. Through its unique power and universality, football can bring people together, transform lives and inspire entire communities. It creates powerful opportunities to break down barriers to social development, education and health awareness. This is evidenced by the hundreds of community organisations that are active in delivering social projects through football across the globe. To harness football’s huge potential and support existing football-based community projects, FIFA launched the Football for Hope initiative in 2005. The initiative’s main aim is to help improve the lives and prospects of young people around the world. FIFA offers funding, equipment and training to the organisations running these projects and their beneficiaries. The support has already benefited over 550 programmes in 79 countries, serving hundreds of communities and tens of thousands of people throughout the world. Football for the Planet FIFA takes its environmental responsibility very seriously. Issues such as global warming, environmental protection and sustainable management are important not only with regard to FIFA World Cups™, but also to FIFA as an organisation. Football for the Planet is FIFA’s official environmental programme, which aims to minimise the negative impact of FIFA’s activities and tournaments on the environment and to use FIFA competitions to raise awareness of environmental issues such as climate protection, waste management and recycling.

Say No to Racism – Diversity and Anti-Discrimination FIFA has a long tradition in taking a clear stand against racism and discrimination. Although racism and discrimination are issues not limited to football and affect society as a whole, its impact on football is undeniable. FIFA recognises its responsibility to lead the way in abolishing all forms of discrimination in the beautiful game and, building on the influence of football beyond the pitch, contribute to the eradication of this scourge from society.

FIFA Sustainability

My Game is Fair Play Fair play is a fundamental part of the game of football. It represents the positive benefits of playing by the rules, using common sense and respecting fellow players, referees, opponents and fans. To give fair play more visibility, FIFA created the “My Game is Fair Play campaign. Since 1997, FIFA has dedicated one week of its international match calendar every year to celebrate and promote the spirit of fair play. For more information, visit FIFA.com

FIFA U-17 WORLD CUP CHILE 2015 – EVENT GUIDE

Host Country Chile

The FIFA U-17 World Cup 2015 will be the fourth FIFA tournament to take place in Chile, a football-mad country in which matches attract large crowds nationwide. As well as hosting the game's flagship event, the FIFA World Cup™, back in 1962, the country has also staged both the men’s and women’s versions of the U-20 event, in 1987 and 2008 respectively. On the latter occasion, this was the first time that the finals of a FIFA women’s competition had been held in South America.

The Chilean national team, nicknamed La Roja, is one of the oldest international sides in the world, having played their first match over 100 years ago (against Argentina on 27 May 1910). The Chilean Football Association, which oversees the game in the country, dates back even further. It was established on 19 June 1895, joined FIFA in 1913 and was one of the founding members of CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, in 1916. Brasil 2014 was Chile's ninth appearance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ finals and their best result to date came on home turf in 1962, when they finished third. Other notable achievements include third place at the 1993 U-17 World Cup and 2007 U-20 World Cup, a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics and fourth place at the 1987 U-20 World Cup. The most successful clubs in Chilean football history are Colo-Colo, Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica. On the continental stage, highlights include Colo-Colo's victory in the 1991 Copa Libertadores and Universidad de Chile's triumph in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana. 143

Host Country Chile

Located along the west coast of South America, Chile is an extremely long, narrow country spanning a full 39 degrees of latitude from its northern border with Perú and Bolivia to the Diego Ramirez Islands in the south. It is bounded by two major mountain chains: the Andes and the Coastal Range. Chile also claims sovereignty over a chunk of the Antartic, stretching from roughly 61°S all the way to the South Pole, although these claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty. Its best known offshore island territories, meanwhile, are Easter Island, the Juan Fernández Archipiélago, Chiloé and Tierra del Fuego. Chile's official language is Spanish, which is spoken throughout the country with only minor regional variations. Other languages continue to survive in limited areas, including the indigenous tongues Mapudungun (spoken by the Mapuche people), Rapa Nui (spoken on Easter Island) and Aymara (spoken in the mountains in the north of the country).

Economy Chile has one of the solidest economies in South America, relying heavily on the extraction and export of raw materials. On this note, it is among the world's leading copper exporters. Agriculture and livestock farming are also prevalent in the central and southern regions; indeed, the export of fruit and vegetables has reached record levels over the last decade, thanks to booming trade with Europe and Asia. Forestry, fishing and wine production have also grown substantially in recent years. On the other hand, other industries remain highly decentralised and mainly serve local markets.

Chile weather and tourism Owing to Chile's geographic diversity, weather conditions can vary hugely across the country. In broad terms, the climate is dry in the north, warm in the centre and cold and wet in the south. The far north of the country is home to the Atacama Desert, which runs from the lower slopes of the Andes to the sea. Mining – the region is extremely rich in minerals – fishing and industry are predominant in the area, but it also attracts large numbers of tourists. The top draws include the beaches lapped by warm waters, plus authentic Andean villages and salt pans in the middle of the desert. The bulk of Chile's population and economic activity is clustered within a roughly 1,000 kmlong area running from the north of the capital, Santiago, to the city of Puerto Montt. The beautiful beaches skirting along the coast of this central region, not to mention the breathtaking lakes, volcanic landscapes and fish-filled rivers, are magnets for visitors. Below Puerto Montt, the picture changes again to encompass vast expanses of wild vegetation and rolling hills, interspersed by hundreds of islands, fjords, glacial lakes and rivers. All in all, this is an ideal setting for adventure tourism and relaxing in the heart of nature. Similar landscapes are to be found even further south in Chilean Patagonia, which also covers the whole of Tierra del Fuego. The stunning city of Punta Arenas, with its historic mansions, is an ideal starting point for discovering a whole host of captivating and fascinating sights, headed by the Torres del Paine National Park, the Bulnes Fort and, of course, Antartic.

Chile Currency The currency of Chile is the Peso (CLP). Bank notes come in denominations of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos. Coin values are one, five, 10, 50, 100 and 500 pesos. The $1 and $5 peso coins are quite worthless in Chile. Chile's currency has been pretty stable in recent years. Exchange rates are usually best in Santiago, currently the exchange rate in Chile is US$1 = CHF 704 (September 2015). It's customary to tip 10% of the bill in restaurants. Taxi drivers do not require tips. Keeping safe in Chile Chile is one of the safest countries in Latin America. Visitors can travel freely only taking minor precautions. Like in any other country in the world, it is recommendable to stay in touristic neighborhoods if you are not with a local or a guide and be careful in the city centers. Violent crimes are not common, however pick-pocketing happens.

Host Cities

SANTIAGO

Santiago

Santiago is Chile’s capital and nerve centre. Located in the Metropolitan region, it borders the country’s fifth region to the north and west, the fourth region to the south, and Argentina to the east. Founded on 12 February 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia at the base of Cerro Huelén, Santiago today marries an historic past with a contemporary present, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South America. As well as being the country’s main conurbation, it is also Chile’s political, cultural and economic centre. Its metropolitan area is known as Greater Santiago and is divided into 37 communes, one of which is Ñuñoa. The commune is home to the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Pradanos, named after one of the country’s most famous sporting journalists. From the moment it was inaugurated in 1938 the venue has played an important part in Chile’s sporting and cultural life. Declared a Historic Monument in 2003, it remains the country’s principal arena thanks to its frequent hosting of the most prestigious sporting, artistic and cultural events taking place there.

The adjoining central neighbourhoods of Lastarria and Bellas Artes captivate with their bohemian charm. They are easily explored on foot and offer a host of cultural and culinary delights, including cafes, bookstores and theatres. The National Contemporary Art and Fine Arts Museums are on the route, as is the Parque Forestal. Much of the area is dotted with historic buildings and old stately homes, all beautifully maintained. Close by you can find the Gabriela Mistral Museum, with stages frequent expositions. For its part, Ñuñoa is known for its quality restaurants and wealth of cultural activities. One of the most popular meeting points is Plaza Ñuñoa, where a diverse range of gastronomic and artistic offerings draw crowds from all over Santiago. Santiago Centre has plenty to keep its visitors entertained. Among its many attractions is the residence of the President of the Republic, the Palacio La Moneda, a neo-classical building designed in 1785 by the architect Joaquin Toesca to house the national mint. Guided tours of the ground floor, patios and selected rooms are available. On the Palace’s southern side, located beneath Plaza de la Ciudadanía is the Centro Cultural La Moneda, which houses the National Film Archive, two temporary exhibition halls, permanent collection spaces as well as shops, bookstores and a cafeteria.

Football is the country’s principal sport and this is reflected in the large number of professional clubs based in the capital. At present these are: Audax Italiano, Colo Colo, Barnechea, Club Deportivo Palestino, Unión Española, Universidad Católica, Universidad de Chile, Magallanes and Santiago Morning. Colo-Colo, Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica are the city’s most popular sides and account the majority of national league titles. Among the most anticipated derbies every season are those known as el Superclásico (ColoColo vs. Universidad de Chile) and el Clásico Universitario (Universidad de Chile vs. Universidad Católica). 152

Less famous but no less competitive are the capital derbies involving clubs originally created by sectors of immigrants into Chile – Audax Italiano, Union Española and Club Deportivo Palestino. While the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Pradanos is Chile’s principal arena, Santiago can boast several other important venues, including the Estadio Monumental David Arellano, the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo, the Estadio Santa Laura and the Estadio Bicentenario Municipal de La Florida.

CHILLÁN

Chillán

Located 404 kilometers from Santiago, in the Bío Bío region, Chillán is a city and commune of Chile’s Centro Sur (Southern Centre). It is the capital of Ñuble province and is known as “La Cuna de la Patria” (The birthplace of the Motherland). Chillán was founded on 26 June 1580 on the north bank of the Chillán River, and it was Martin Ruiz de Gamboa, general captain and governor of Chile at the time, who originally gave it the name San Bartolomé. It is a city that is very representative in Chilean history, as well as being an area well-known for cultural activities, thanks to its wide range of museums, murals and artistry. The friendliness of its people also adds greatly to its appeal, which is underlined by its popularity with big names in culture and the arts as a place for rest and relaxation. Also featuring gastronomy that is renowned nationwide, including dishes that hark back to traditional Chilean cuisine, its Andean areas also feature a host of hot springs, lakes and valleys that are all well worth seeing.

Photo: Marcelo Vildósola Garrigó 159

Host Cities Chillán

Termas de Chillán (Hot Springs) and Nevados de Chillán (Snowy Peaks) are two tourist resorts featuring swimming pools fed by hot springs, resorts which in winter become attractive ski stations and in summer are ideal for walking, cycling, horse-riding and adventure sports – such as hiking, trekking, rock-climbing and zip-lining. All of which enable visitors to have fun, while savouring the diverse flora and fauna. Some 35 kilometers from Chillán is Quinchamalí, a small town where the traditional craft of clay pottery has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. The roots of this art come from the former Mapuche Indian town of the same name. A particular speciality of the potters and ceramicists are ceramics in black clay, made by hand with the help of rustic tools, items for which Quinchamalí is internationally famed. The centre of Chillán is a very pleasant area to stroll around, as you get a feel for the place from where the city began to expand. A wander around its streets could take you to the Mercado (Market), a building with modernist-style architecture in which you can find an intriguing variety of local businesses selling such produce as longaniza (a long spicy, pork sausage), one of the city’s most symbolic culinary items.

Football is, along with rodeo riding, the city’s most passionately followed sport, with local club Deportivo Ñublense flying Chillán’s flag on the professional scene. Originally founded on 20 August 1916 under the guise of Liceo Fútbol Club, their home stadium is Estadio Municipal Nelson Oyarzún Arenas – thus named in tribute to one of the club’s most legendary coaches. The stadium, which was first unveiled in 1935, was redeveloped and reopened on 2 November 2008 in time for Chillán to play host to matches at that year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. 160

Located around 500 kilometers from the capital Santiago, Concepción is in Chile’s south-central zone and is the country’s second most-populous metropolis. It is bordered to the north by Hualpén, Talcahuano and Penco; to the south by Chiguayante and Hualqui; to the east by Florida commune and the west by the Bío Bío River, San Pedro de la Paz, Coronel and Lota. Concepción is a city with a very active student life, something which goes hand-in-hand with the large number of cultural and artistic activities that are constantly on the go, both in and around university campuses and in public areas. Surrounded by the Cerro Caracol and the Andalien and Bío Bío Rivers, its urban nucleus has a significant impact on levels of national commerce, given that it is part of the country’s most industrialised region.

Concepción can offer a wide range of nearby beaches, where a variety of walks, scenic viewpoints and culinary treats can be enjoyed. Visitors should take the opportunity to travel to neighbouring communes and see beaches such as Ramuntcho beach, with its turquoise waters; the Lenga and Chome coves, where delicious savoury pastries can be tasted; or even Punta de Parra, a delightful blend of beach and abundantly verdant woodland. 167

Host Cities Concepción If it is nightlife you are looking for, then La Plaza Perú, next to the University of Concepción and packed with a host of pubs and restaurants, is a great place to start. There visitors can sample of the area’s finest micheladas, a tantalisingly blend of micro-brewed beer, lemon and the Mapuche chilli pepper merkén. Taking a train ride might also appeal, particularly when the journey supplies a breath-taking view of the Bío Bío River, one of the country’s largest tributaries. And that is even without taking into consideration the destination at the end of the line – San Pedro de la Paz commune – where you can visit Laguna Grande, a shallow lake with glacial origins surrounded by a mountainous area where a wide array of gastronomic options can be found.

Concepción has three teams actively taking part in Chilean league action, with pro sides CD Universidad de Concepción, Deportes Concepción and semi-pro outfit CCD Arturo Fernández Vial. Deportes Concepción first came to life on 24 February 1966 with the amalgamation of several amateur clubs. It grew into the fiercest rival of the region’s oldest club, Arturo Fernández Vial, against whom they clash in El Clásico Penquista. The latter team were founded on 15 June 1903, are Chile’s fifth-oldest club and have always retained strong links with the country’s railway workers and working class. CD Universidad de Concepción originate from the educational institution of the same name and indeed, in their early days, their squads consisted of students and staff from the university. Its current guise was established on 8 August 1994, when it was inaugurated as a sports club in its own right. La U Penquista made it into Chile’s top flight in 2003 where they have remained since, barring a brief spell in the second tier in 2013. 168

Situated in north of the country, Coquimbo is one the the biggest cities of the region of the same name and the province of Elqui. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean, to the north La Serena, to the east Andacollo and to the south Ovalle. The wonders of its extensive coastline, which runs from La Serena in the north to Tongoy in the south, have long been admired. Liberally dotted with beaches, coves and spas, it invites visitors to soak up the sun and enjoy its soft white sand and warm, crystal-clear water. The city’s Costanera Avenue also has a large number of attractions to offer, among them a casino, a four-kilometre cycle path, gyms and free outdoor recreational activities. Coquimbo has much to offer in terms of accommodation and sightseeing, including some delightful beauty spots, among them La Herradura Bay – once a favourite haunt of pirates – and Fray Jorge National Park.

To visit El Barrio Inglés is to take a trip back in time and get a feel for what life was like for the port’s inhabitants in the early 1900s, when it began growing into the city it is today. Its cobbled streets and large houses – made of Oregon pine and corrugated iron – form part of an area that is Coquimbo’s biggest attraction in terms of culture, tourism and cuisine. During daytime hours, the district is home to craft shops, pastry shops and cafes, while at night-time there is much to see and do, with nearly 50 restaurants to choose from, not to mention a wide variety of pubs and clubs. 175

COQUIMBO

Coquimbo

Host Cities Coquimbo For the very best seafood, visitors should make their way to the Puerto Pesquero Artesanal, Chile’s second-largest fishing port and home to many stalls, restaurants and traditional eateries serving delicacies such as oysters, clams, squid, prawns, mussels, limpets and sea snails. Fish is also on the menu, in the shape of albacore, southern ray’s bream and hake. The boat trips around Coquimbo Bay and to the island of Los Lobos are also well worth taking. For stunning views of La Herradura bay and Guayacán wharf, then make a beeline for Los Navegantes, a vantage point that reveals the sheer immensity of the Pacific Ocean. The building is a tribute to the English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Dutch sailors who frequented the Coquimbo 500 years and played their part in creating the many local legends of hidden treasures and adventure on the high seas.

Founded on 11 June 1958, Club de Deportes Coquimbo Unido are nicknamed Los Piratas, a nod to the past and the many tales of corsairs and pirates who stalked local waters in colonial times. Coquimbo Unido’s rivalry with Deportes La Serena – another club who will be hosting games at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 – is one of the biggest in the country. The club acquired its black and yellow kit after a series of matches against the crew of the British ship HMS Flora. Following the fifth game, which was won by Los Piratas, the sailors handed over a set of shirts sporting the colours of the flag of St David, the patron saint of Wales. This is the second time that the region of Coquimbo is welcoming a FIFA competition, having hosted games at the FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup in 2008.

Host Cities La Serena

As capital of Chile’s Coquimbo region, the commune of La Serena has become one of the country’s premier tourist destinations. It forms part of the Elqui province, extending as far as Coquimbo and Andacollo to the south, La Higuera to the north, Vicuña to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. La Serena is also the country’s second-oldest city of Spanish origin, having been founded in 1544 – three years after the country’s capital Santiago sprung up on the banks of the Mapocho river.

LA SERENA

Following the Great Depression of 1929, the then Chilean President proposed the La Serena Plan, the aim of which was breathe new life into the local economy. The plan also encompassed large scale urban redevelopment using traditional architecture. This is still evident today in many of the buildings of the old quarter, which have managed to retain their ancestral hallmarks. Many of these buildings are now national monuments. Thus protected, many fine examples of neo-colonial architecture remain in excellent condition, including traditional balconies, small plazas, promenades and long residential buildings with unbroken facades.

183

Host Cities La Serena

Close to the city centre and just in front of Japanese Garden you can find the Parque Pedro de Valdivia, an area of some 26,000 square metres ideal for enjoying the surrounding natural charms. Inside there is a small zoo where children can interact with the animals, as well as extensive meadows for families to relax or roam in, all the time surrounded by grazing sheep, goats and other animals. The park also contains a sports centre with pitches where you can play football, rugby, basketball and hockey, as well as a children’s playground and various walking trails. At the very heart of the city is La Recova street market, one of the most attractive of its kind in Chile. Founded in 1795, it served as a supply centre in colonial times, though nowadays it specialises in culinary products and local handicrafts. There you can find a huge range of pottery inspired by the Diaguita culture, semi-precious lapislázuli stones and jewellery, alpaca wool garments, books, musical instruments and much more. After sightseeing, tourists can dine at one of the citys numerous restaurants and terrace eateries, where the local seafood is exquisite. La Serena’s popularity as a tourist destination owes much to its fine beaches, which flank one of the busiest esplanades in Chile. In total, there are 12 beaches – Canto del Agua, Las Gaviotas, Hipocampo, El Corsario, El Pescador, Quatro Esquinas, La Barca, Blanca, Mansa, Los Fuertes, La Marina and El Faro – all apt for swimming and water sports. These run the length of Avenida del Mar, where modern high-rise apartments, hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs jostle for space.

Founded on 9 December 1955, Club de Deportes La Serena grew out of the city team that won three successive national amateur titles in the early 50s. This run of titles earned the club an invitation to join the country’s professional league, culminating in their promotion to the top flight in 1957. With rivals Coquimbo Unido, they make up one of the country’s most keenly fought derbies, which has at times been interrupted when promotion or relegation has left the pair in separate divisions. Known as Los Granates (The Garnets) – after the stone by the same name that adorns the entrance of their Estadio La Portada. Indeed from 1750 to 1930, that entrance functioned as the main gateway through the fortified walls of the city. The original pitch was a dirt field until upgraded to coincide with the club turning professional in 1955. 184

Host Cities Puerto Montt

Situated in southern Chile on Reloncaví Sound, the city of Puerto Montt is both the capital of the commune of Puerto Montt, the province of Llanquihue and the region of Los Lagos. Home to an international airport and El Tepual airbase – the second-largest in Chile – Puerto Montt is the southernmost host city of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015. The gateway to the Carretera Austral, a national highway famed for its stunning scenery, the city also boasts a large seaport that connects the southern regions of Aysén and Magallanes with the rest of the country. Sitting on a bay protected on its western side by the island of Tenglo, Puerto Montt is also the main point of connection with the Chiloé Archipiélago. Its 74 kilometres of coastline supply delicious fish and seafood to the markets of the Bay of Angelmó, which is known for its restaurants and craft stalls.

PUERTO MONTT

Eight minutes away lies the stunning Isla Tenglo, home to lush native vegetation and small, white sandy beaches. Its name in Mapudungun, the language spoken by the indigenous Mapuche people, means “quiet and pleasant place”, which describes to perfection a place offering panoramic views of the Andes and the Calbuco, Osorno and Tronador volcanoes. One of Puerto Montt’s most popular destinations is Angelmó, which only lies two kilometres away from the city’s Plaza de Armas. Situated on the seafront, Angelmó is famous for its palafitos, old wooden houses that sit on stilts in the water, and for local seafood dishes such as curanto and pulmay.

191

Host Cities Puerto Montt On one side of Angelmó lies the market, which sells a wide range of fish and seafood, and on the other can be found the craft fair, where local artists sell woven fabrics, chests made from larch wood, baskets, silver jewellery, leather hats and saddles. Just 46 kilometres outside Puerto Montt can be found another of the many natural jewels that the region of Los Lagos has to offer: the Andean Larch National Park, which offers protection for the last few hectares of a thousand-year-old forest, one that once stretched all the way along the mountain range. Forming part of the Southern Andes Temperate Rainforest Biosphere Reserve, the national park is home to larch and other tree species, which rise more than 40 metres above the ground, as well as around 50 lakes and wildlife that includes pudú deer, pumas, condors and black woodpeckers.

Founded on 6 May 1983, Club de Deportes Puerto Montt are the southernmost professional club in the world. The nearby cities of Valdivia and Osorno set up their own football clubs at more or less the same time, with the three of them regularly disputing supremacy in the Los Lagos region. The city’s stadium, the Regional de Chinquihue, offers superb views of Isla Tenglo and blends in seamlessly with its surroundings, which are dominated by the green and blue of the sea. 192

Host Cities Talca

Situated 253 kilometers from Santiago, Talca is the capital of the province of the same name and of the Maule region. An important administrative, economic and cultural centre, it is the largest city in Chile’s Central Valley. It is flanked to the south by the commune of Maule, to the east by San Clemente, to the north by Pelarco and San Rafael and to the west by Pencahue. Agriculture and wine in particular play an important part in Talca’s economy, while Maule’s coastal areas are a major attraction, with their beaches and varied cuisine, as are its mountains. Not far from Talca lies the Radal Siete Tazas National Park, which takes its name from the seven pools – each with their own waterfall – formed along the Claro River.

TALCA

Talca lies in the Maule Valley, an important wine-growing region that is home to a large number of both traditional and modern wineries, not to mention boutique bodegas offering specialised services such as vinotherapy sessions and olive oil tastings.

199

Host Cities Talca Like many cities in central Chile, Talca boasts an important cultural heritage. Its many historical buildings include the O’Higgins Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Villa Cultural Huilquilemu. Home to colonial architecture and local crafts, the town of Chanco, which enjoys protected status as one of the country’s zonas típicas, is also well worth a visit. The region’s biggest natural haven is the Altos de Lircay National Reserve, which has many pleasant spots for hikers to enjoy such as the La Laguna del Alto, El Enladrillado and La Playa Valle del Venado. Close to the reserve are the areas of Vilches Bajo, Vilches Medio and Vilches Alto, where the Lircay River runs, forming peaceful stretches of clear blue water and beautiful deep pools.

The city’s football team is Rangers, which was founded on 2 November 1902 by a group of teachers from the Liceo de Hombres and the Escuela Superior N°1. The club was named after Glasgow Rangers at the suggestion of one of the founding members, who hailed from the United Kingdom. Nicknamed El Piducano after the river estuary on which the city sits, Rangers are Chile’s fourth-oldest professional team and play at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca, which was refurbished in 2009 and reopened in 2011.

VIÑA DEL MAR

Viña del Mar

Located just 134 kilometres from Santiago and with lots to offer in terms of hotels, cuisine, shopping and sightseeing, viña del Mar is one of Chile’s main tourist destinations. Dotted along the local coastline are more than ten beaches and the Parque Borde Costero promenade, which covers an area of nearly 15,000 square metres and comprises a large number of green areas. A mere ten minutes from the city centre lies the National Botanical Park, which is open to the public. Its 40 hectares are home to more than three thousand species of flowers and over 50 species of birds, and the park is just one of the reasons why Viña del Mar is known as “The Garden City”. The sandy dunes and the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean also make for a fascinating and contrasting landscape on Concón Beach, which offers peace, tranquility and gorgeous views.

207

Host Cities Viña del Mar

The residence of the city’s founder, La Quinta Vergara is a large and beautiful park that is now open to the public. Its lush gardens boast a wide variety of plants and flowers, collected by the Vergara family on their trips to Asia, Europe and Australia. The park also comprises the Palacio Vergara, which houses the Museum of Fine Arts and an open-air amphitheatre that stages the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, the largest of its kind in Latin America. Opened in 1930, the Casino de Viña is one of the city’s landmarks and one of the best equipped casinos in the world. The building now has a modern and stylish five-star hotel with restaurants that reflect the sheer variety of dishes on offer in a city that looks out to the sea. One of Viña del Mar’s most distinctive districts, Sausalito is the location of the city’s football stadium, which is named after the suburb it is situated in. The stadium is flanked by a beautiful lake that was formerly known as La Hacienda reservoir, built at a time when water was in short supply.

Local club Everton FC were founded the afternoon of 24 June 1909 by a group of students driven by their passion for sport and its values and ideals. Holding their first board meeting that very day, they decided to name the new institution in honour of the famous English club, who had just completed an outstanding tour of Argentina. With eight league titles now to their name, Everton is Chile’s eighth-most successful club.
