In order to promote the health and well-being of its patrons, as well as introduce them to the expansive history that Carolinas Air Force Base offers, specific design elements have been incorporated into the renovation of this space. The integration of an open plan helps those with psychological issues, such as PTSD, to feel at ease, and allows light to flow through the space in order to promote health. A neutral color palette with contrasting hues adds stability and structure while still providing interest and social stimulation. Finally, due to the expansive history that Carolinas Air Force Base offers, design elements such as the incorporation of natural finishes and materials, historical memorabilia, and other various design elements, have been added to help aid in the education and integrety of these men and women.

Kitchen Demonstration

The wide array of historical influences found while researching Carolina Air Force Base, from the foundation of their facility, to how it recieved its name, to the diverse experiences that they have participated in, led me to choose a historical focus on design. Through the use of a variety of materials, such as military memorabilia, the incorporation of natural elements that relate back to roots such as a topography mapping service, dedication plaques, and other various historical design elements were used throughout. This health and wellness center gives patrons a historical perspective on thier current situation, while providing a sociable, yet relaxing area that helps in the healing process of multiple mental and social issues.

IDEC PATIENT ROOM:

As the top orthopedic medical facility in Potomac, Maryland, Shriver Medical Center boasts a high quality of care and service for its patients. With the integration of multiple technologies, same-hand room layouts and the incorporation of private indoor and outdoor spaces for these temporary residents, this patient room is not only aesthetically pleasing, but is also functional for both patients and physicians.

Focusing on our three key design features of providing multi-functional furnishings, technology-driven spaces, and a need for patients to connect with nature, my partner and I were able to collaborate to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing design for this orthopedic unit. All finishes selected include sustainability and micro-bacterial properties, making this space easy for nurses and patients to feel comfortable in. A “same-handed floor plan allows for interlocking spaces, and the decrease in confusion between patients and staff. Through the incorporation of these and many other design elements, as well as the collaborative utilized, my partner and I have been able to create a well organized and healing environment.

Key Plan

17 Research shows that nearly 48% of the Potomac population is above the age of thirty-five, putting a large portion of people at risk for falls and other injuries in which an orthopedic hospital would assist. Additionally, through the extensive and in depth research performed by myself and my teammate, it was found that patients involved in orthopedic injuries have a higher chance of being kept overnight in a medical facility. Therefore they must be kept as comfortable as possible to ensure a quick recovery. For those longer stays, additional storage has been incorporated, as well as the multi-functional pieces, which add to a level of comfort for these patients.

JOHNSTON HALL RENO:

A survey and new design has been presented to Johnston Hall In order to properly mend any issues associated with its ability to meet issues regarding codes and other requirements. . In surveying the property, many issues have been addressed and an addition allowing for more space for the School of Interior Design has been added. The use and knowledge of multiple Building Codes and Systems aided in the ability to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional design for Anderson University.

When reworking the existing interior of Johnston Hall at Anderson University, it was important to make sure that both the Interior Design and Education Department were able to efficiently use this space. In addition to surveying the property and resolving site issues , an expansion was created on the back of this building to help with the expansion of the ever growing Interior Design Department. Using skills such as AutoCAD, Trimble Sketchup, Twilight Render, and other basic skills reinforcing codes and space planning, I created a design that facilitates learning, modernizes the space and continues to preserve the surrounding architecture of the campus.

Native Sculpture:

Known for its newly renovated Falls Park, South Carolina’s downtown Greenville is an expansive space that attracts a wide array of individuals, from multiple locations. In creating a new sculpture recognizing its ten year anniversary, a creative apporoach was taken that reflects the history and innovations of the town, all while ensuring a durable and long-lasting design that the public is able to interact with.

Sculpture Installation

25 Utilizing the skills acquired in my Building Codes and Systems course, I was able to create a sculpture that could easily be placed in the recently renovated Falls Park area of Downtown Greenville. A highly reflective, mirror-like quality is attributed to the use of polished steel, with structural support coming from a metal back brace and reinforced concrete. In creating this sculpture, I was able to enhance creative skills, creating a work with deep symbolic meanings of the unnamed men and women who aided in the creation of this area. This has allowed for an interactive experience for viewers to “reflect on what they have done for the Greenville area.

AmericasMart Atlanta (15th Floor):

As one of the most well-known hubs

for design in the southeast, AmericasMart is a globally known design center that attracts thousands annually. The 15th floor, dedicated to origianl architect John Portman, now features a newly renovated workspace for designers. The preliminary schematic design includes work tables, seminar spaces, a kitchen exhiitor catalogs, and private meeting rooms, allowing for designers to have a dedicated work area.

Preliminary Workroom Sketch

Skills Utilized: Along with those skills that were utilized in meeting with these upper level employees, I was able to work alongside the lead designer of this project, in order to create innovative solutions to problems, as well as see, first hand, the ideas put forth by the schematic design phase. Using the 3-D modeling software, Trimble Sketchup, I was able to create a base plan for the space, with general furnishings, fixtures, and equipment placed, and create the hand drawn images seen here. The use of these skills helped aid me in my ability to create preliminary sketches of the spaces, and allowed me to better communicate with the individuals who would be in charge of this project.

29 In addition to the installation of another space on a lower level of AmericasMart, I was given the opportunity to aid in the schematic design phase of the designers lounge on the 15th floor, which just recently opened. After meeting with the Vice President of Marketing and Construction Manager for AmericasMart, I was able to gain valuable knowledge in presentation settings, as well as time management, organization, and overall professionalism.

G.E.M. SOUTHEAST:

G.E.M. Southesast, located in Toccoa, GA, has plans to create an additional office and manufacturing facility. In order to help clients understand the exterior of this structure, as well as help in the selection of finish materials, I have been asked to aid in the production of multiple two and three dimensional views of this addition.

Working for multiple architecture and design firms since my sophomore year of high school, I have had plenty of experience in reading plans, interacting with architects, and being on job sites. Additionally, I have been able to create multiple visual aids for these indidviduals, which has added to their ability to communicate with thier clients. For this particular rendering, I utilized my skills of reading plans, communication and organization skills, with the architect, Trimble Sketcup modeling, Twilight Rendering, and Adobe Photoshop to create a visual aid that helped the firm to communicate their design intent with the client.
