debates

between

Vice

President

Nixon

and Senator Kennedy. , What the debates will prove, what they will achieve in votes for either candidate, whether they will enlighten the electorate or leave it more befuddled than ever remains to be determined in the days ahead. One thing is certain, however, and that is that a public debate between presidential candidates, exposed to many millions of viewers, stimulates the imagination. Will the participants be more conscious of their

“image”

or of persuasive

facts?

Will they

distract

their “market” with rehearsed mannerisms, show their best profile or look the customers in the eye and, with the pointed finger, tell them to go to the corner

drugstore tonight and buy their product or “tomorrow you

die.”

We were brought up to believe that a good debater

could “sell” the judges either side of a given subject. Will Nixon sell his product, or will Kennedy convince a majority that his hair oil leaves no stain, or less, than Nixon’s? We'll have to wait fer our answer. The over-

whelming proportions of the predicted audience staggers the imagination. The potential consequences of a real blooper by one of the debaters leaves us stunned. The only safeguard the candidates have in

their

favor

is

the

medium

and

the nature

of

its

addicts. Fortunately fer them, people “look” at television, they don’t “listen.” Whatever comes of this exciting experiment, the first real contest of its mature since the LincolnDouglas debates, we should watch it closely for possible application to our own local campaign. If it
