COLEG MORGANNWG SETS THE GOLD STANDARD Coleg Morgannwg has become the first college in Wales to receive a prestigious award for its high standards of health and well-being. The college has been working hard to maintain and improve the health and well-being of its staff and has been awarded the Gold Corporate Health Standard by the Welsh Government following on from its silver award in 2010. The college has been commended for initiatives from promoting healthy eating across all campuses to supplying staff with a supportive return to work process. Principal Judith Evans said: “To be the first further education college in Wales to achieve gold is something that the staff and I are extremely proud of. We are determined to build on these health and well being standards and hope to make Coleg Morgannwg one of the top places in Wales to work”.

STOP PRESS NEW CAMPUS IS REDUCING, REUSING AND RECYCLING ITS WAY TO CONSTRUCTION EXCELLENCE The development of Coleg Morgannwg’s new £40 million campus at Nantgarw is being showcased for its exceptional corporate social responsibility and sustainability by Construction Excellence Wales.

The campus at Nantgarw, backed with over £34m Welsh Government funding, including investment from the European Regional Development Fund, is being built to strict reduce, reuse and recycle guidelines and is even an exemplar project for other construction companies. To achieve a waste reduction of 85% the structure was put together offsite and transported in sections to Nantgarw for Laing O’Rourke, to assemble. At a ‘Topping Out’ ceremony attended by Leighton Andrews AM and Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning he said “We want our young people to be learning in facilities which are environmentally responsible, modern and technologically advanced. Coleg Morgannwg’s new campus is a great example of this ambition in practice.”

Your fully guided application and enrolment process offers you advice with your subject selection. Helping you to get the balance of subjects that will enable you to progress onto HE or your dream. STAYING ON AT YOUR SCHOOL SIXTH FORM? We can still offer you the chance to study an additional subject, timetabling and travel times permitting. WHAT'S ON OFFER? The Advanced Level Programme enables you to study two/ three or even four AS levels plus the WBQ (Advanced). Following AS results you can then choose two/ three A2 subjects plus the WBQ for the second year. Widen your choices even further by considering a Combined Course take 1 or 2 AS levels in combination with a BTEC Certificate. For example Business Studies and Sociology AS with a BTEC Certificate/Diploma in Business & Finance or Biology and Psychology AS with BTEC Health & Social Care.
PROGRESS SUPPORT PACKAGE All students will receive a complete support package coordinated by their own Progress Tutor, (Progress tutorials are scheduled for one hour per week and follow a tutorial programme in the form of group or individual sessions. Your designated Progress Tutor will be available for you to contact should you need support outside of tutorial times. Two Progress Coordinators oversee the AS and A2 groups and are available for individual sessions as are the Learning Coaches and Campus Support Teams. Progress meetings to which your parents are invited take place in the middle of each year. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You will be expected to achieve a minimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above, one of which must be English. But some subjects may require a B grade as their starting point for example Chemistry, Physics and Maths. WHAT’S ON OFFER? Any students not achieving grade C in either or both of these will need to re-sit them during their first year of study with us.
MISSED THE POINTS!! Do you need to make that grade and 'up' your points score to secure your place at uni? The Fast Track A Level repeat course, although not for the faint hearted, will help. Designed to support students to improve their grades by continuing to study the two or three subjects to AS and /or A level that they may have taken previously. This course is only for students: who have previous A level experience who may want to improve their grades who progress to Coleg Morgannwg following completion of their Year 12 studies in schools. We will provide focussed subject and personal support to ensure those who embark on this course use their time to secure their future place at university or on further work based learning provision.

MAKING AN APPLICATION TO COLEG MORGANNWG IS EASY – YOU CAN EVEN APPLY TO US AS WELL AS APPLYING TO STUDY AT OTHER SCHOOLS OR COLLEGES. STEP
You will be invited in for a chat with an admission specialist and a course tutor. During this visit you will take some tests, discuss your choices and get advice on the best course for you.

APPLYING FOR A COURSE AT COLEG MORGANNWG IS SIMPLE
STEP 4 You will receive a letter telling you what we can offer you; keep this safe you will need it when you receive your results. It may have conditions such as getting certain GCSEs.
STEP 5 We make sure you have the information you need to apply for any additional grants to support you during your studies.
STEP 6 As soon as you receive your exam results let us know by following the instructions on your offer letter. As soon as we receive notification of your results we will contact you about your enrolment arrangements.

If you have learning difficulties and/or disabilities you will be assigned one of the Specialist Student Support Services. Campus Learning Centres The campus Learning Centres (LCs) are hubs of activity, not only providing study spaces but also a wide range of resources from computer based material, print (books and journals) to microfilms and interactive learning packages. Computers, Smart boards and other hardware options are available for students to prepare presentations and project/course work submissions.
From 2012 one of the RCT public libraries will be opening in the Nantgarw campus providing easier access to an even wider range of books, dvds etc for social enjoyment.
Voices and Views – its our time to make our future
The college’s highly acclaimed award winning Student Parliament plays an active part in improving the college by representing the students on all aspects of college life. Affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS) it provides a forum for students to discuss issues affecting them; with members of the Parliament representing students on various groups and committees including the Governing Body. Each campus has its own Student Parliament; they then elect members onto the whole college Student Parliament. Most recently the Student Parliament met with members of the college’s Senior Management Team to discuss the development of the new Taf Ely Learning Campus, making sure that the voices and views of the students were heard during its design process.

RCT provides free transport for fulltime students under 19 years old who live more than 2 miles away from the college campus delivering your chosen course that is nearest to your home. Full-time students who are under the age of 18 on the 1st September prior to starting their course, and whose parental income is less than £10,000 may be entitled to meal vouchers for use in our refectories.

Assessments and Reports Homework and assignments play an important part in our students achieving success on their chosen course. Help us to help them by keeping a close eye on things. We let you know about regular Progress Evenings but if you need to speak to someone other than at these times please contact their personal or course tutor.
Attendance and Punctuality Students are required to have 100% attendance especially if they receive the EMA. If your son / daughter become ill, let their personal/course tutor know as soon as possible. A student missing two consecutive classes will be required to attend an interview with their personal/course tutor. If the absences persist an advisory note is sent to the home address.

AS AND A LEVELS (LEVEL 3)
NVQs
The new Advanced Level Programme (ALP) has 22 subjects on offer.
Qualifications at levels 1-4 are matched directly to the workplace and involve the demonstration of job related competences. You can do these at college or in the workplace.
A levels involve two years of study, the first year is known as the AS level and the second year as the A2. Both years need to be completed via exams and coursework to gain an A level grades A*-E.
BTECs... are non exam based qualifications providing a real-world approach to learning. They can also be combined with GCSEs and A levels. BTECs are available at different levels: Entry – for developing confidence and initial skills either for the work place or everyday life Introductory (Level 1) – a basic introduction to an industry sector, encouraging personal and workrelated skill development
THE WELSH BACCALAUREATE From September 2012 The Welsh Baccalaureate (WBQ) will be offered to all students at Foundation, Intermediate or Advanced levels depending on your course of study. You will participate in innovative learning activities involving global citizenship, sustainability, health, culture etc. Work-experience and community participation are incorporated, as are visits to places of interest (home or abroad). The WBQ is an Advanced Level qualification worth 120 UCAS points which is equivalent to an A grade at A level.
Nationals (Level 3) - specialist qualifications offering a clear future career route or progression to Higher Education Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Level 3) – preparation for entry to Higher Education to study art and design WorkSkills (Entry 3 - Level 2) – a suite of skills-based employability units. ...and they come in different sizes: The smallest is the Award The next is the Certificate The largest is the Diploma

You might be working alongside others, saving the day with good negotiating skills or even being a solutions person your ESSENTIAL SKILLS can save the day.
Are you one of these ‘Enterprising Individuals’? - We are working hard to make sure that all our young people have the chance to become entrepreneurs and so we give you plenty of opportunity to get to grips with your enterprising side.
COLLEGE STUDENTS LAUNCH ENTERPRISE STRATEGY AT THE WELSH ASSEMBLY Bethan Davies and Sam Elliot were invited to take part in the media launch of the Youth Enterprise Strategy (YES) and ‘Big Ideas Wales’ website. They gained valuable experience, presenting an excellent account of their entrepreneurial journey to dignitaries and the press. Enterprise is high on the agenda at the college with annual Campusbased Enterprise Challenges.

How about the BTEC Applied Science courses. These are practical and work related and will prepare you for a career working in the applied science industry or an employer, organisation or company that has science as the base for its business. The Applied Science courses help you develop your scientific knowledge and skills. You will explore science principles as well as experiencing science and the world of work; choosing four specialist units from: chemistry & applications, physical science applications, biological systems, working in science, anatomy & physiology, environmental science, plants & food, forensic science and science in medicine.
OUR TIME, OUR FUTURE GARETH DELIVERS SUCCESS Gareth left school with few qualifications and began work as a postman but he yearned after a scientific career. He eventually enrolled on a Science course at the college, feeling that he got excellent ‘on course’ support from the staff. They also helped him through the UCAS application process for universities. He completed a 4 year degree at University of Glamorgan and in 2010 gained First Class Honours! He then decided to pursue a career in teaching enrolling on a PGCE course even returning to college to do some of his teaching practice. Gareth has now been accepted to start a 3 year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research Degree at University of Glamorgan saying “My time at Coleg Morgannwg has given me the chance, to achieve something more, and crucially the confidence to “Go for it”, if I can do it anyone can! I never thought that I would get a Degree, and now I am starting a PhD.”

our time our future CARE STUDENTS AFRICAN ADVENTURE Three students on the Child Care, Learning and Development course and six of their staff spent 2 weeks of their summer break caring for children with HIV and aids at the Morning Star Children’s Centre in Welkom, South Africa. They supported the centre taking care of children as well as helping out with practical tasks like painting and gardening.

THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP The NVQ Pathway in Health & Social Care has been recognised at the Social Accolades Awards Ceremony as an excellent example of partnership working – the course is offered in collaboration with Rhondda Cynon Taf C.B.C. Social Care Partnership
Students Carlie Logan, Louise Newland and Louise Glastonbury went on a fundraising mission and managed to raise an impressive £1,500 each to pay for their own flights and accommodation. Kath Sidorowicz their tutor said: “This was a great opportunity for our childcare students to take their newly acquired skills to a place that benefited. HIGHER EDUCATION COSTUME CONSTRUCTION students work on exciting productions with WNO, BBC and Theatre Mappa Mundi designing and making costumes. The list of courses is amazing with something for every creative taste, contemporary or traditional and everyone takes the Welsh Baccalaureate (WBQ) as part of the main course of study. ENTERPRISE SKILLS are encouraged through the embedding of enterprise projects across all programmes which has resulted in some fantastic achievements including third place in the Global Enterprise Challenge in Bali competing against 14 other countries.
MEDIA MAGNETS Students from the Media course were given the opportunity to produce a radio advert to promote ‘enrolment’ days. The group of students visited the studios at Real Radio, Cardiff where they were greeted by Paul Robinson, Copywriter of the adverts. The students were given a tour of the studio and introduced to a number of the presenters before settling down to the task of producing their advert. Media student Roxy Bevan said “It was a brilliant opportunity, I loved it - at first we were really nervous but Paul was great; he explained how he writes the adverts, using sound effects etc and reassured us throughout the challenge. Paul Robinson said, “Although shy at first the students soon relaxed and I’m sure they enjoyed the experience. We try to encourage student involvement and it was good to see their enthusiasm – they had some great ideas and the end result was excellent”.

STUDENTS SHOWCASE TALENTS ON WORLD STAGE Students studying on the Foundation Degree in Costume Construction for Stage and Screen have been chosen to design the costumes at the opening ceremony of the London WorldSkills competition. The students, under the guidance of tutor Emma Highgate, will have the opportunity to demonstrate their talents to a world stage at the event which will take place in the O2 arena. The competition which is expected to attract over 150,000 visitors takes place in a different country every two years, and brings together competitors from 50 countries.
WHAT A PERFORMANCE A Cardiff student who had a difficult upbringing moving between several foster homes is looking at a bright future after taking control of her education. Laura Thomas moved from home to home and struggled at school due to the constant upheaval. At 16 she had to live on her own so made the decision to turn her life around by enrolling at Coleg Morgannwg. Laura passed GCSEs in Media Studies, English, ICT, Sociology and excelled at a National Diploma in Performing Arts while at the college. Laura has been chosen from more than 12,000 part time and full time students as the college’s most outstanding student at a recent awards ceremony. Laura, who is now at Aberystwyth University studying Television, Film and Performance, said: “If I am honest, the award is a little overwhelming but I am delighted to win it. Coleg Morgannwg opened a gateway for me to improve my prospects in life and the support of the staff helped me build my confidence and allowed me to reach my full potential. “I never thought I would be able to go to university, but going to college has changed my life and made me realise that nothing is impossible. I would love to be a drama teacher, but I am keeping my options open at the moment.”

COMPUTING COURSES at Coleg Morgannwg give you the chance to explore the range of options across the IT industry whether it’s PC maintenance, programming, even web design networking or application software.

LEWIS GREGORY has recently completed his Level 3 course with Triple Distinction and is commencing his studies at Exeter University in the Autumn. “Studying A Levels was completely the wrong route for me. Coleg Morgannwg has turned this around and has given me the opportunity to really shine both academically and personally. I will really miss the college, both staff and students.”
SAMANTHA JAYNE loved her course so much she wants to tell the rest of the college about it. As well as embarking on a Level 3 Computing course next year, she is also turning her hand to a spot of journalism on the college newsletter telling students about technological change. “I’ve always had an interest in new technology, especially in the area of computing. My research for the paper will no doubt assist me with my studies.”

Business Administration students at Coleg Morgannwg gain hands-on experience of running a company on an international level with the college’s Experiences Generating New Innovation (EGNI) programme. There are 42 countries involved in the scheme, including Malaysia, which has just become part of the scheme. Their companies, ‘Clean Sweep’, Cariad and Greets & Treats sell products to other practice firms in 42 countries across the world. They were set up to resemble real businesses with different departments such as marketing, sales and accounts. The only difference is that no money or products actually change hands. The EGNI programme is offered to all Business Administration students alongside traditional theoretical lessons. During the programme students ‘attend’ trade fairs around the world with other practice firms to drum-up new business and develop contacts. Such is the success of EGNI at Coleg Morgannwg it acts as Companies House for other practice firms in the UK, and is the central base for other colleges and schools across Britain to ‘bank’ its proceeds.
Lecturer Christine Thomas said: “EGNI is a great way for young people to gain practical experience of running a business”. Abi Powell, from Aberdare studied Business Administration using the EGNI scheme and now works for rail and civil engineering company, Hammond (ECS) Ltd. Abi said: ‘When I started at Hammond (ECS) Ltd I couldn’t believe how much I already knew about how a business operates. I was able to put my experience gained through EGNI straight into practice.”

Lewis Young, 18, from Aberdare, Thomas Pascoe, 18, from Mountain Ash, Jack Dando, 18, from Pen-y-Graig and Callum Lewis, 17, from Aberdare were all presented their caps by Welsh rugby legend and commentator Eddie Butler at an awards ceremony at the college.
Coleg Morgannwg joined forces with the Cardiff Blues Academy in 2010 and what a start? - Four students have received debut caps for the under-18 Wales side within a year of joining the college’s rugby academy.
Clive Jones, the director of rugby at Coleg Morgannwg said: “We are thrilled for the boys who have got their caps. They really deserve it as they all have a tremendous attitude and have worked hard to get into the national setup”.

Callum Lewis said “The college has been great, without playing in the competitive college league I don’t think I would have been called up for Wales which shows how much they have helped my career. The academy is a perfect balance between work and rugby; the tutors give us responsibility and space. The coaching staff have been great and ensure that we never take anything for granted. I am now hoping to secure my spot with the Blues, earn more caps and pass my course with top marks. Anyone who wants to learn and play rugby should definitely get down to the college.” Gethin Watts, Cardiff Blues’ regional performance development manager, said: “We have enjoyed helping Coleg Morgannwg to deliver this course which could potentially produce some of the Cardiff Blues’ rugby stars of the future. The holistic nature of the course means that even after players’ careers have come to an end they’ve got other skills and qualifications which will enable them to carry on working in sport.” Coleg Morgannwg hope to further develop the relationship with the Cardiff Blues to continue to produce top rugby talent and ensure that the individuals have a career to

At the end of the two-year course, students gain a BTEC Level 2/3 Diploma in Sport (performance and excellence). Morning sessions consist of lectures in subjects such as fitness training and programming, physiology and sports nutrition. Afternoons are spent honing playing skills on the rugby pitch and in the gym. Students also work towards the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. During the course, our students have the opportunity to train alongside Cardiff Blues players and receive coaching from some of the Blues’ coaches.

time to practice and enter the competitions, and friends and relatives showed their support through volunteering as models. The whole team performed well, with some emerging hairdressing stars of the future leading the pack.
Catrin Davies, has impressed her tutors with her creativity and has since gone from strength to strength on the circuit. She came 1st at The British Open for the category ‘Ladies evening fashion on long hair’ as well as being crowned the National Hair Federation’s bridal champion.

SIMON SIZZLES AT CATERING Simon Watkins enrolled at the college, aged 16 years after his family decided to move to Wales following the devastating effects of the 2008 tsunami in Thailand. He tackled his studies with a passion and successfully completed qualifications in Multi-skilled Hospitality, Professional Cookery, Food & Drink Service, Professional Cookery and Hospitality Supervision and Leadership.

His work experience involved a spell with Compass – Jockey Club Catering at Cheltenham Gold Cup Races. He worked as a supervisor in the on course glass fronted boxes. His role involved managing fourteen staff and looking after 480 guests over the four day Festival. Simon has always been prepared to go the extra mile and enrolled on an International Hotel Management degree course at UWIC.
LEVEL 1 HOSPITALITY AND CATERING PLUS THE (WBQ) LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA IN FOOD AND DRINK SERVICE COOKS EXCEL IN CULINARY CONTEST Our catering students have been recognised for their culinary skills in a national competition. The catering students took the silver medal in the Institute of Hospitality Dining Awards, which are competed for by catering students from across Wales. In their competition task the students, were given £100 to spend on the food and table decorations and £40 on wine. Their challenge was to design the menu and prepare, cook and serve a three course meal for 12 guests in four hours!

BUILDING FOR ‘OUR’ FUTURE The Coleg Morgannwg Construction team is working with Laing O’Rourke to deliver a lecture support programme which gives students a fantastic insight into the construction industry and experience of a working site. The programme runs alongside the construction course and is a result of Laing O’Rourke’s contract with Coleg Morgannwg to build its new state-of-the-art £40M campus at Nantgarw. Judith Evans, Principal said: “The lecture support programme has been invaluable to our construction students and has equipped them with the tools that they need to succeed in a tough industry. The job market is

fierce at the moment, with youth unemployment in Wales at a record high, so we want to ensure that our students have the edge over the competition. “It is great to see so many students getting a unique chance to kick start their careers in the construction industry.” The students are also able to work with the construction company on long term work experience placements getting a real taste of the working environment. Two students will also be selected for paid placements as student engineers, allowing them an even greater level of responsibility on site. But it doesn’t stop there as well as being involved in the building of their

new college campus they work on the £34m development at Merthyr Health Park. Stephen Robbins looks after the lecture support programme and is the corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager at Laing O’Rourke, said: “The initiatives we have on this project are fantastic for both Laing O’Rourke and Coleg Morgannwg. We have a great relationship with the college staff, students and the wider residential and business communities surrounding our sites which demonstrates our commitment to CSR. MAKING THE BENCH MARK First Year Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery course students recently undertook a project to design and build two large wooden picnic benches for use by their fellow students.
PE OF TO COME In real ‘the apprentice’ style they started by identifying the skills they would need and matched each member to a role. The nominated Project Manager co-coordinated the group. They all worked so hard, even giving up their breaks to ensure the benches were completed on time. One Student said “I am really pleased with our bench, when we were given the task, I was quite nervous as it seemed a huge challenge but we have all worked together and it will be great to see our bench being used by other students”. Darren Lewis construction lecturer said “I am so proud of this group, they are all first years and the quality of their work is excellent” The group have now completed their first year and many will be going onto the 2nd year of the Diploma at the college. If they successfully complete their second year they will have the chance to study on the Extended Diploma in Construction.

FEMALE FUTURES Coleg Morgannwg has seen an upsurge in girls shunning traditionally feminine courses and taking on typically male subjects, with a 5% increase in 2011 in the number taking on engineering apprenticeships. Cerys Williams, completed her BTEC National Certificate in Manufacturing and Engineering, and went on to become the first female apprentice at Allevard Springs Ltd in Clydach Vale. Cerys‘s love of engineering since she was a little girl grew from spending time with her grandfather in his shed learning how to make things with his tools. Cerys says: “I am very grateful to Coleg Morgannwg for giving me the help and confidence I needed. My course and subject tutors were all very supportive, as I lacked confidence in my work. I was always asking

questions and the tutors were always there to help and answer my questions. “I picked up so many skills and the combination of subjects helped my organisation as well as my working manual knowledge. Talking about her role in a male dominated industry, Cerys believes women can offer a different set of skills. She said: “I think that women can bring different things to engineering because they can look at things in a different way. Being the first ever woman to work within engineering at my company has been challenging. But despite my worries, I feel I have proven to myself and to my colleagues that I have the abilities necessary to be a competent engineer” “The main thing for women to remember when going into a trade is that they have the same right to do the work as any man and there is support out there for those who want to learn.” Kevin Dickens, an Engineering tutor, said: “Vocational courses offer a great springboard into business. Modern industries recognise that women do as good a job, despite the outdated stereotypes. I am proud to be part of a college that has such a forward thinking.”

SHANE’S A NATIONAL WINNER In September 2010 Shane Dally visited the college to enrol on a Painting and Decorating course, but his application was unsuccessful because his school reference was poor and he was referred for a place on the Practical Skills Course and has never looked back! Shane enrolled on the course and demonstrated total commitment; his attendance was excellent. He proved a great role model to others and was supportive of less able members of the class. FOUNDATION COURSE FOR SENSORY IMPAIRMENT The ‘Foundation Course for Sensory Impairment’ has been specially designed for students with visual or hearing impairment. Take the chance to study for a range of entry level qualifications supporting you to develop independent living skills and promote your self confidence PROGRESS POINT – These three Foundation courses give the chance to move onto mainstream options or to employment. INCREASE YOUR LIFE AND WORK OPTIONS – by attending Coleg Morgannwg for a 1 year course on 4 days per week. Given his commitment he was nominated for a WorkSkills Award and travelled to the WorkSkills Celebrating Success Event at Smithfield, London. The journey was well worth it as Shane successfully received a WorkSkills National Award, the highest accolade in Celebrating WorkSkills success. Shane is now looking to enrol on a construction course, his tutor, Jill James said “In all my years of teaching, I have never known a student with such determination and complete focus. He has shown great insight into his personal skills and qualities and addressed a number of issues in order to achieve his goals”. JESS MOVES ONWARDS AND UPWARDS Jess Prosser started by applying for a Foundation Studies course in Catering back in 2010. During her interview she mentioned that she hadn’t been to school full time since she was 13 years. Her attendance was so poor that she received home tuition and successfully passed her GCSE Maths. Since joining the college Jess has shown total commitment to her course with an attendance rate of 99%, having only 3 days off this year. She has made a lot of friends and her social life has improved 100%. She has worked to a very high standard loves her college life and even complains when we have college holidays. Jess has achieved all her qualifications this year and even received a WorkSkills award. In September she will be starting an IT course.

Sport at Coleg Morgannwg is organised through the 5 x 60 programme which is in place to provide opportunities for young people to become more active and aims to encourage people who do not currently play sport to get more active and have fun. It also aims to provide opportunities for volunteers who want to gain more experience in working in a sports environment to help run clubs and to pick up awards and qualifications. As well as setting up extra-curricular clubs the 5 x 60 programme tries to make sure all activities are sustainable by developing links with local clubs. An important part of the programme is to listen to the needs of students and provide activities they want to participate in. Activities in 2011 ranged from traditional team sports

such as rugby, football, netball or hockey to outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking, hill walking or rock climbing to indoor classes such as Zumba, street dance or martial arts. We aim to make joining in as easy and as flexible as possible, activities are run as ‘turn up and play’, structured coaching sessions, competitive fixtures, or fun festivals.
Over 100 students studying on various courses from the Nantgarw campus joined forces with teams of British Airways Maintenance staff in Cardiff to raise money for Comic Relief. The teams took part in an ‘Aircraft pull’ at Cardiff International Airport on Red Nose Day. Before each pull, professional sportsmen Matt Elias (400m hurdler) and David Roberts (Olympic swimmer) provided warm up activities. In addition to the fundraising, trophies were awarded for ‘best dressed team’, ‘most sponsorship money raised’ and ‘fastest time’, as well as a medal for every entrant. Since British Airways joined forces with Comic Relief in June 2010, the airline has raised in excess of £700,000 for ‘Flying Start’ – the airline’s charity partnership with Comic Relief, which aims to transform the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the UK and around the world.
SPORTING CHANCE In 2010/11 Coleg Morgannwg joined the colleges’ rugby league, with students now getting the chance to travel throughout the country playing different college teams. And it gets even better …. our budding valleys rugby stars are being coached by Clive Jones the former Director of Rugby at Pontypridd, who is now the new Course Director for the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence. An added extra comes from Coleg Morgannwg hosting the Cardiff Blues Academy which means our students are given the chance to turn their sporting dreams into reality; they get to train and play alongside the young professional rugby players of Cardiff Blues. This year we have had four of our rugby stars getting their Welsh caps.
