What do we understand by mental health? Health is not only the absence of diseases but the result of a complex process where biological, economic, social, political, and environmental factors interact in generating conditions that allow the full development of human capacities and potentials, understanding humans as both individual and social beings. This idea is also applicable to the concept of Mental Health. Research has been highlighting the importance of the so-called Social Determinants of Health when assessing the health and mental health of individuals. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Social Determinants of Health as 'the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, work, live, and age, including the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life.' The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Mental Health as: 'A state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.’

Why is mental health important? Mental health is a fundamental right and well-being for all individuals, and it is the responsibility of everyone to take care of it. It is essential to understand that mental health is 'played out' in close quarters: in the way we build our cities, in the prevailing educational model in our homes and family life, in the importance we place on emotionally educating students in educational institutions, in the attention provided in social services for especially vulnerable individuals, in the care with which we address health in workplace environments, in the improvement of the portfolio of psychological services in Primary Care, and in increasing the ratio of psychology professionals in specialized care.
