A NOTE FROM COLE:

NEW YEAR. NEW ME. “More!”... “more!” That’s what Lacey kept telling me after went “rode” the escalator at H&M for the 11th time while Nicole was shopping. I’ll admit, after the 4th time I kinda had enough but then I realized how fun this was for Lacey and figured what the heck, let’s keep this free entertainment going! We ended up going about 12 times (I lost count) and it was so fun to see her go from happy, to scared to climbing the steps to sitting on the steps (when I took this photo) and just in general watch her process life. The old me was a lot more impatient & a lot less flexible. Not anymore. But I should point out that I changed because I WANTED to change to better myself. This stuff takes work people.

Step 1 is realizing where you can improve and step 2 is to work at it. So this year I am pushing myself even more… to work less, to play more and to enjoy life each day at a time and really soak in the little moments with Lacey – even if it’s finding joy in riding the escalator 15 times! My challenge to you is to think about what’s one thing you’d like to improve on and put a plan together to do it. It might be something related to your personal life, or it might be with your photography.

STEP 1 IS REALIZING WHERE YOU CAN IMPROVE AND STEP 2 IS TO WORK AT IT.

Either way, it’s a good exercise to get in the habit of and will get you on track for “constant improvement”. Last year in April when I announced I was 168 pounds and was going to lose 10 pounds in 6 weeks one of our pro members Ariana said something like “If you think the process is going to be terrible, it will. If you get excited about the future and how much better your life will be, it’ll be enjoyable.” And she was right. It’s been a heck of a journey but I have never felt better both emotionally and physically. So remember to embrace the journey and it’s perfectly OK to slow down and enjoy the ride! Cole

SIX AWESOME IDEAS FOR MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS IF SOCIAL MEDIA WAS GONE Ever think of a world WITHOUT social media (you can’t, right?!) Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, these platforms have become such a HUGE piece of how we market and run our businesses, but we sometimes forget that we don’t own them. We don’t control them. And just like they continually change their rules and algorithms, they could also cease to exist at any moment. And THEN what would we do?!

$250 COLE’S CASH WINNERS: JENNIE WIECHERS UPHAM DONNA BENEDETTI COLEMAN H I L A RY W E B B

1. TALK TO EVERYONE! Simple enough right? Sometimes we forget just how powerful word of mouth can be! Bring up your business casually in conversation with everyone you meet. Get out there you blabber mouth!

2. THE BUSINESS CARD SLIP Momma-Business Woman powerhouse member Logan Fahey recommends buying a cup of coffee for the person behind you in the Starbucks Drive Thru. When you do, slip the clerk one of your business cards with a cute handwritten message on the back like “Have a great day!” and ask them to pass it on with your free coffee gift! Brilliant!

3. SHOW OFF Carry you camera around with you! This can be an awesome conversation starter all on its own!

4. FREEBIES! Try taking some free photos in a public space! When you grab an awesome shot, approach the person and hand them a card to your gallery, where they can download their free social media sized photo for free. You could generate a ton of new business from those who just can’t get enough!

5. GET LOCAL! Try setting up a booth at a local family event, craft fair or festival! Take some photos for each person who approaches your booth with a cute little mini session set up! Provide a code for one free watermarked image and the option to buy other images you took during their visit at a discounted rate. Make sure they go home with some promotional materials too!

6. YOUR IDEAL CLIENT KNOWS MORE OF YOUR IDEAL CLIENT! Referral programs, we preach their worth here in Cole’s Classroom! Offer your current clients a discount on a future session, free print or product, a free mini session or even CASH when they refer family and friends who mention their name and book! Mastering social media in today’s world is a must and a great skill to have, but remembering to step outside of your computer and use some other awesome marketing strategies can really raise your game and make sure that if social media were to fail you, you will not fail. We can’t wait to see all the great things you are going to do!

PHOTO CONTEST WINNER HIGHLIGHT:

MARIE FOGH BOGH BY E D E L C L A R K

HOW’D YA WIN IT? (IN A MINUTE!) The winner of the photo contest for December, on the theme of “Joy” is Marie Fogh Bogh! Marie’s winning photo captured the hearts of all of us on the CCPRO team, and truly encapsulated the theme of Joy!

WELCOME MARIE! TO START, COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? Hello! I am from Denmark, where I work as a full time school teacher. I live in the countryside, where I share my life with my wife and our son, who is now one and a half years old. We have horses and a dog and some cats - animals and nature are very important to me, and a big inspiration in general. I am grateful that we have the opportunity to pass this on to our son, who already is a big fan of all the animals! My photography business is new, having only started this summer. I didn’t realise how much I would love it, and how it would impact my life in such a positive way. My plan next year is to reduce my hours as a schoolteacher and increase my time doing what I love, as a photographer. THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN EXCELLENT PLAN TO AIM FOR! WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY DO YOU DO? TELL US ABOUT YOUR STYLE? I primarily take photos of children and families, and sometimes animals (I love when I can combine those!) My style is mostly lifestyle, and I always strive for candid and real photos. I’ve always shot this way; I just didn’t know it was a style and had a name! At the beginning of my photography business, just before I joined Coles Classroom, I had my first paid job. It was a standard portrait session for a family with teenage kids. I hadn’t prepared the family (or myself) enough on my style, so it just became a bit awkward - the pictures were boring and not the kind of photos I wanted to take. I knew I had to learn posing, and questioned if portrait photography was even for me. But then I took Kimberlee’s amazing lifestyle course… And my heart said BOOM!! I was so touched and inspired and just knew what to do from there! HOW INSPIRING MARIE! THAT COURSE IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITES TOO. HOW LONG HAVE YOU ACTUALLY BEEN WITH CCPROS? AND WHAT THINGS HAVE YOU FOUND THE MOST BENEFICIAL FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP? I took the lifestyle course in the first week of my 1 dollar trial in September. It made me become an Insider right away, because I was pretty blown away with all the stuff on the website and all the great things happening in the Facebook groups! I have really been benefitting from the courses and breakouts. I love all the Facebook Lives that Cole and the other mentors do. Listening to their thoughts about making a successful photography business has really changed my mindset, so I feel like I have the opportunity to stand out! Being an insider keeps me moving and always learning and striving to be better, and that’s down to all the gentle pushes from the mentors!

T H E M O N T H LY S N A P S H O T

I CANNOT LOVE THIS MORE MARIE, AND IT SOUNDS SO SIMILAR TO MY OWN STORY! RECOGNISING THE VALUE SO EARLY AND BECOMING AN UPGRADED MEMBER MEANS YOU GET TO BENEFIT EVEN EARLIER FROM ALL THE CRAZY-GOOD STUFF WE HAVE TO OFFER! OK, SO LET’S GET ON TO WHY WE ARE HERE I GUESS! CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE WINNING PHOTO? This photo was taken in December and was from a session with a family of three. It was around noon - actually it was supposed to take place an hour and a half before… but I had driven almost all the way to the family, only to remember that my camera bag still was at home! So embarrassing!! Thankfully the family were really sweet and indulgent. I used my Canon 70D with a Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens, and natural light only. Right behind me, there is a balcony door, where most of the light comes from. Shutter speed was at 1/320 sec, f1.8 and ISO 640. The father and daughter have that loving and joyful look in the image because they are looking at the mother. She was holding a yellow, giraffe-shaped teddy bear in her hand that the little girl absolutely loves. Every time she saw it, she would crack up in a laugh! So wonderful to witness! WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY TO DATE? I think the biggest challenge for me has been to accomplish a consistent look and style. Within each session and in general. I wasn’t fully aware of the importance of this before I joined Cole’s Classroom, but it has made such a great impact on my photography. It is still a focus point for me, and one of the things I found that has helped me the most with this is using presets. I bought some, and tweaked them a bit so they fit my style. I’D LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SHOW YOUR GROWTH WITHIN CC PROS. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO SEND A PHOTO BACK TO ME TAKEN BEFORE YOU STARTED CC PROS? This photo is from the session I mentioned earlier. It is a colleague of mine and her family. There are many things I would have done differently today, but mainly I would prepare myself and the family better before coming to them. I would have made it clear that my style is mostly documentary, but also tell them, that I would guide them through it. I would have asked what kind of photos they wished for, so I would be sure to capture that, and prepared myself with different posing ideas so I could get a variety of different pictures.

Today I learned how to do a headswap in Photoshop, and that would have helped me even more. For those of you who haven’t tried it yet, I can highly recommend Betsy’s guide to head swapping - it is so easy to follow (and I am really not good at Photoshop yet), and when I did it the first time, I wished I’d tried much earlier. IT HAS SAVED MANY OF US FROM HAVING TO SCRAP AN IMAGE! BETSY IS GREAT AT BREAKING THINGS INTO EAST TO FOLLOW STEPS FOR SURE! FINALLY – LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY – LOOKING FROM YOUR STARTING POINT PHOTO, TO THE MOST RECENT WINNING PHOTO, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR GROWTH? The last photo is from the beginning of my photography business. Since joining Cole’s Classroom, I have learned so much, and worked so much with my business - I think of myself as a photographer! I even tell others as well, and it feels amazing. I am really proud of myself. I still have a lot to learn and do, and my next goals are to start offering prints and learn much more about photoshop. I also want to do more for the client experience, by making a welcome guide, a client prep guide and a next steps card, (all in the treasure chest now!). And finally I want to start a blog on my newly made website. WE ARE SO EXCITED TO SEE YOUR PROGRESS SO FAR, AND HAVE NO DOUBT YOU WILL MEET YOUR GOALS IN 2019. ANY WORDS OF ADVICE TO OUR NEWBIES IN THE GROUP, OR TO THOSE THAT HAVEN’T YET ENTERED A PHOTO CONTEST? If you want to grow as a photographer, my best advice is to make a decision about it. When I started my business, I decided that I wanted to be good at it. Once I’d decided, my mindset changed and so did my drive and motivation. It made me invest in myself - for example, becoming an insider, but also investing a lot of time on all of the courses on the website and using time in the Facebook group. That time spent has driven me to make a lot of decisions toward getting better as a photographer and as a business owner. While having growth as my guideline, it has also given me the space to make mistakes, because I take those situations as something to learn from and not as failures. So if you are new in the group, I just want to wish you welcome and congrats on investing in yourself. It is going to be good! Put yourself out there and it will come back to you in the most rewarding way! THANK YOU SO MUCH MARIE FOR SHARING YOUR STORY WITH US! HEARING THE STORIES BEHIND THE WINNING PHOTOS REALLY ADDS ANOTHER DIMENSION TO WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT. BUT HEARING THE STORIES BEHIND WHERE SOME OF OUR MEMBERS STARTED, WHAT PULLED THEM IN AND HELPED THEM GROW, AND WHERE THEY ARE AIMING THEIR SIGHTS NEXT, IS TRULY INSPIRATIONAL. COLE’S CLASSROOM IS SO MUCH MORE THAN AN “ONLINE EDUCATION PLATFORM”. WE ARE FAMILY. WE ARE A DOOR TO NEW OPPORTUNITIES. WE ARE THE ANSWER TO QUESTIONS YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW TO ASK. AND WE CHANGE LIVES!` IF YOU WOULD LIKE THE OPPORTUNITY OF BEING A WINNER OR FINALIST IN OUR PHOTO CONTEST, JUST LIKE MARIE, MAKE SURE TO ENTER THIS MONTH’S COMPETITION TO BE IN WITH A CHANCE! AS MARIE SAYS – JUST MAKE THE DECISION AND WATCH YOURSELF GROW!

USING THE RULE OF THIRDS IN PHOTOGRAPHY B Y B E T S Y D AV I S

The Rule of Thirds is one of several guidelines for composing visual images. The rule of thirds divides an image into a 3x3 grid, created by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. This technique suggests that placing the subject or point of interest in your image along one of these lines enhances the visual aesthetic of your photo by giving the image more energy and impact. In fact, placing the subject at the intersection of the two of the lines, called power points, provides a maximum visual impact. Utilizing the rule of thirds when composing your images is a great way to add dynamic interest to your photos.

HOW TO USE THE RULE OF THIRDS The most basic snapshots typically place the subject of a photo directly in the center, most often leaving the image visually flat and without impact. While there are times that intentional center placement can be very powerful, the rule of thirds suggests that we can add interest to our photos by utilizing the grid described above. While the “power points, or the intersections of the grid are idea for placement of your subject, the lines in the grid can also be utilized in your composition. See the comparison below for an example of how both the grid lines and intersections can be used to create a strong composition. In the image below, both the subject and the horizon are centered. The subject resides in the center of the grid, and the horizon passes through the direct center as well.

Compare the above image with this photo below, where the Rule of Thirds was used to compose the image. The subject is at the lower left intersection and the horizon follows the lower horizontal line of the grid.

T H E M O N T H LY S N A P S H O T

11

The above composition not only draws your eye immediately to the subject, but then allows your eyes to naturally wander through the scene and imagine what the subject may see beyond the frame. Rather than searching the image for the subject, your point of interest in immediately identified, which allows for the exploration of the remainder of the image to be that of curiosity and imagination, rather than chaos. The points of intersection on the grid are the strongest players when it comes to the Rule of Thirds. However, when you can utilize not only the points of intersection, but also allow the horizontal or vertical lines of your image to align with those of the grid, you maximize the visual strength and impact of your photos. While the points of intersection are a guiding point, it should be noted that placing your subject anywhere near the intersections can form a strong composition. However, when I am utilizing this composition technique, I prefer placing my subject as close to that intersection as possible. Additionally, when your subject is a single person, you can also maximize the power of the rule of thirds by placing the point of intersection directly over your subject’s eye. Below are additional examples where the Rule of Thirds was used in the composition.

WHY SHOULD I USE THE RULE OF THIRDS If the above examples haven’t convinced you of the power of this composition technique, you may still be asking why you should use the rule of thirds. Studies have shown that when people are viewing any sort of visual art, their eyes are naturally drawn to one of those points of intersection. By placing your subject there, you create immediate visual impact, rather than the viewer having to “search” your image to find the story or subject. When the viewer can immediately find your photo’s intended focal point, it allows the eye to then explore the image with the subject, as opposed to searching the image for information first. This opens up a whole new level of artistic possibilities! While the rule of thirds is a proven guideline, there are times when you may find that a center composition actually adds to your photo rather than subtracts from it. You will find that the rule of thirds serves as a guide to help you be intentional about how you compose your photos, rather than haphazardly shooting. The act of considering about how to compose your image to best tell the story you want to tell will help you increase your visual impact. The rule of thirds is simply a proven guide that can help you begin moving in this direction.

PHOTO TIP OF THE MONTH BY E D E L C L A R K

THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S GUIDE TO MALE POSES: 4 STEPS FOR SUCCESS Are all men and women created equally? Well yeah, but not necessarily when it comes to posing! In the case of male posing, you want to make sure that your man is feeling the way he wants to feel! Does he want to portray strength, power, masculinity or does he want a friendlier, casual or more open photo? Here are some quick tips and tricks to mastering male posing!

BUILD THAT RAPPORT COMMUNICATE! Male poses can be a little difficult sometimes, especially when you are more used to working with women. Spend the first five minutes explaining how the session will go, and lighten the mood (sessions can be really overwhelming for people who have never experienced a photoshoot)! If your client is leaving it ALL up to you in terms

of posing, choose posing that best suits his personality (from what you can guess!) Match the mood.

FLATTER THE MALE BODY! Make him feel his best and watch his confidence SOAR. Start with making sure he has good posture. If you notice him slouching during the shoot, say something like, “ok, great, now bring those shoulders back just a tad!” Encouragement during your session will be your best asset, and set the mood! Look for a few things during your session. Men (in some cases) tend to look better when they are square to the camera, verses a side view. Broad shoulders and a strong chin are the two things you want to make sure look good! Male or female, no one loves a double chin!

CLOTHING! We want to make sure that the client matches the mood of the photo they want. If they are looking for corporate headshots, you may want to mention they should leave the ripped jeans at home. However, if they want casual skateboarding photos for their new business, then the casual look fits the style. Make sure to communicate with your clients in every situation, and just to be sure, send a style guide mentioning these tips and tricks.

T H E M O N T H LY S N A P S H O T

Now onto the best bits…. POSING!

POSE 1: START SIMPLE – STANDING OR SITTING Have your subject either stand (with one leg slightly in front of the other) or sit. Sitting can be on a stool, chair, bench, desk, the ground etc! Look around and use the environment to your advantage! The more variety you use, the more options your clients will have to choose from.

POSE 2: MOVE THE HANDS AND ARMS This seems simple enough, but slightly changing the arms and hands will make a huge difference in your photos. In this case, you really won’t need to change your location (which you may not be able to if you’re in a studio anyway)! This can give you a TON of different poses without even having move their feet! Once you get your client(s) into a sitting or standing position, with their legs planted, you can start to vary their arm/ hand positioning. ·

In the pockets.

·

Hand under the chin.

·

The hands can be crossed in front of the body.

·

On the hips.

·

Resting on a table.

·

Sitting casually on a prop.

14

T H E M O N T H LY S N A P S H O T

POSE 3: ALTER THE HEAD POSITION Another easy one, huh? So for example you can have your client change their arm/hand position and then have them look at the camera, look away, look at a prop of some sort (like a book), laugh, show-off their best model face, and a last but not least, a genuine smile! Or, like in the photo above, you can grab one mid-sentence.

POSE 4: CHANGE THE ANGLE AND COMPOSITION! Having you subject in different parts of the frame always adds an interesting element to any photo. The same goes for your male subjects! If you’re in a studio, you can try the rule of thirds, and if you’re outdoors, try your typical compositional tricks like framing, layering, or changing your angle!

SO TO RECAP: Try to combine these tips to create a great pose for any male. Remember, first pick if your subject will be sitting or standing. Next, choose where they should place their arm/hands. You can never go wrong with having your client place his hands in his pockets while standing! From there, ask him to change the placement of his head, from looking away to look straight at your camera! While he’s in this pose, get up close, back up, take a side shot or at a slight angle. Before you know it, you’ll have a full gallery of images that will reflect their personality. These tricks can all be used in engagement and wedding sessions with couples, in professional headshot sessions, or in family shoots! The goal is to alter your current posing flow slightly in a way that flatters your clients and helps them leave feeling great and loving their photos (and hopefully telling all of their friends)!

GEAR HIGHLIGHT B Y K E L LY A C S

REMOTE SHUTTER TRIGGERS 101! IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GET IN THE PICTURE! So as photographers, we usually feel FAR more comfortable behind the camera (myself included). But what we don’t realize is how quickly time goes by...except for those few seconds we reflect when we notice the year flew by in what feels like seconds. So I’m reminding you NOW. GET IN THE PHOTO. Yes, I’m yelling at you. A remote shutter trigger will allow you to capture those fleeting moments, and SO worth the minimal cost. The few self-portraits I have with my daughters and sweet 95-year old grandmother/best buddy are my MOST treasured photographs. I KNOW you want to give those memories as gift to your clients, but what about gifting those moments to yourself?

What is typically included in a remote shutter set up: 1. A hot-shoe transmitter. This attaches to where a flash would normally go, and receives the signal from your handheld remote to take the photo. 2. A short cord that attaches your hot-shoe transmitter to your camera. It plugs into both pieces and the cord is only a few inches long. 3. A handheld remote. This is what you discretely hold in your hand. It’s small and you simple push the button on the remote and your camera will snap the photo! ***As always, make SURE that your camera is compatible to the trigger when looking to purchase! It will say the make and model of your camera in the description!***

HEATHER MARTIN-THOMAS

WHERE I CALL HOME: Home is where my family is. We’re originally from Rhode Island but relocated to Pensacola Florida on military orders. Pensacola now feels more like home, and I cannot complain because our white sand beaches are 15 minutes away from house. YEARS I’VE BEEN IN BUSINESS: I have been in business since June of 2018. While I had a few sessions from time to time (and a lot of model calls) in Rhode Island, I never took the jump and registered my business because I didn’t feel confident in my abilities. MY NICHE / WHAT I SPECIALIZE IN: I specialize in family photography with a lifestyle approach. My focus this year is going to be marketing more in-home or “special place” sessions to really capture authentic family photos. I also use both digital and film in my work, and get “They still make and develop film?” all the time. I have found that shooting film has helped keep me inspired and be really intentional and present with my clients because I am not checking the back of the camera every five seconds. Right now I am shooting both in my sessions but would like to have some sessions which are all film- but that is a work in progress.

WHY I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY: Looking at photos has always made my heart ache in all of the best ways, especially now. My mother used to take photos of us growing up all of the time, and I have a few albums of me as a toddler. I find it interesting that over time the brain “forget” certain details and events in our lives, but a photo has the power to jog our memory and help us remember what our first childhood home looked like, or help us see a loved one’s face that is no longer with us. It’s like the memory never left. I love meeting clients and getting to know them, capturing their story from an outsiders perspective. The little details of their family and home that they may not think are important are the ones that their kids are going to remember. ONE CHALLENGE IN MY BUSINESS THAT I’VE OVERCOME: Confidence for sure- I no longer feel like a faux-tographer. I have found that once I was able to take myself seriously and say “I am a photographer” backed up with a legitimate business, my work improved tremendously because clients could really sense that I loved what I do and was happy. ONE THING I LOVE ABOUT COLE’S CLASSROOM IS: The community. The community is everything. There are times where I feel like I have this business thing down, or that I know all the professional responses to difficult or sensitive clients and then a curveball happens. Its never judgmental when I have a question, and there are always so many unique and fun marketing ideas that serve as inspiration for my own marketing.

JUST FOR FUN...

3 FACTS ABOUT HEATHER: 1. I am a graduate student, studying for my masters degree in social work. Its my other passion and prior to last year I felt as though I had to choose one. 2. I feel as though I am very introverted because I get really anxious meeting new people, prior to a session, or talking in a big group. Every person who has met me or watched me while doing a session has said I actually am extroverted. 3. I really love the feeling when its cool outside, but your car has been sitting in the sun so you get in and its nice and toasty.
