MARCH 2019
A NOTE FROM COLE: year, I was quite “OK” with getting up on this massive stage in this huge room. GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE I am not gonna lie… I am not very adventurous. I usually like to stay within my comfort zone. However, the best growth happens when we get comfortable with the uncomfortable.
All in all, the talk went very well. People loved it and I felt pretty comfortable up there. But make no mistake, there is always room for improvement and I am already thinking of what I can do better next time.
Ya know what’s scary? Public speaking. ...and that’s why for the last 3 years, every chance I get, I get on stage and speak. My heart usually starts beating a bit faster and sometimes it even feels like there is a weight on my chest, but, I don’t let it stop me and always try to do better than my previous time speaking. Usually I am only speaking to a 100 or so people but not this last weekend when I was asked to speak at the Traffic and Conversion Summit where there was 7,000 in attendance!
OK, now it’s your turn… Ask yourself, are you pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone?
So here I was, speaking on the same stage as Rachel Hollis, Sir Richard Branson, Brendon Burchard and many more.
If not, it’s time to change that. Don’t worry, start small… you don’t need to hop on a stage or anything.
...and the room was packed!
Just remember, if you keep yourself in your “comfort zone” don’t expect much growth - both personally & professionally.
In the past, I would have totally been a nervous wreck, but not this time. Thanks to me putting myself up on stage a few times a

1. KEEP IT SIMPLE Simple enough right? Sometimes we forget just how powerful word of mouth can be! Bring up your business casually in conversation with everyone you meet. Get out there you blabber mouth!
2. SET YOURSELF A TIMER Set a timer and a task! Don’t stop going full force on that task until the timer goes off!
3. PLAN AHEAD Each night write down what you want to accomplish the next day! That way when you wake up you can get started right away
4. STRETCH YOURSELF! Cole talked about this in his note to you - and we agree! Enter contests and challenges to stretch you outside of your comfort zone and keep you improving all the time!
5. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY Treat your days like you’re working in an office! Do you think you could just show up to the office and hang out, and start working whenever you feel like it?! Nope! Have a schedule and a plan and hold yourself accountable!
6. COMPARE! Almost fooled ya! Compare your work to your past work not to others! Note the progress you’ve made… it’s a big deal! Celebrate! 2

6. UTILIZE A PLANNER! Did you snag the Cole’s Classroom planner designed by our very own Kimberlee this year? If not definitely pick yourself up a planner. I find my favs inexpensively at TJ Maxx! OR... if you missed out on Kimberlee’s planner, you can still grab a digital copy of the 2019 Photographer Planner right now!
8. OVERCOME! Make a list of your negative thoughts and deepest fears! Work your way down the list and dispel those notions! Tell yourself positive affirmations. You can even find positive affirmation on youtube and play them like music while you work, meditate or sleep. It makes a difference!
9. LEARN! Choose a weak spot and find a learning resource to help solve the problem. Don’t just let it linger! Don’t forget to log into your Cole’s Classroom account and check the course catalog and training vault for all your photography and business learning needs!
10. BELIEVE! Close your eyes, take a long deep breath, focus your energy and DO IT! What awesome methods of motivation and organization are you going to use this month to BFB? We can’t wait to see you do it!

PHOTO CONTEST WINNER HIGHLIGHT:
VIKTORIA GEBEI-TARI BY E D E L C L A R K
HOW’D YA WIN IT? (IN A MINUTE!) HEY VIKTÓRIA! CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING FEBRUARY’S PHOTO CONTEST WINNER!! TO START, COULD YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF? I’m Viktoria! I’m married to David and we have two small children Sophie (4.5) and Sammy (2.5). I was born and raised in Hungary but about 7 years ago my husband and I decided to move to the UK - which was the best decision we could ever make! We are very happy here and as a British-Hungarian family, we are very proud to be part of such an amazing country.
WOW! WHAT AN EXCITING MOVE! BEING IRISH AND MOVING TO THE UK YEARS AGO I CAN RELATE - I LOVE THE UK! SO WHAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY DO YOU DO? CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? I started my photography business about 6 months ago, and since then I’ve been photographing mostly families with children. Kids are very close to my heart and after having photographed my own children for years, it seemed to be quite obvious to start my business by photographing others! As I don’t own a studio (and not planning to own one either), I offer in-home and outdoor sessions. I have rather a documenting / lifestyle style than the classic “posing” style, but I aim to take some photos of my clients when everyone is looking into my camera. As I’m very fresh in photography I take every single opportunity to gain experience: I did a milk bath session, I took photos of the children in my son’s nursery events, I did maternity photos, portraits for businesses… you name it. THAT’S EXACTLY THE WAY TO PUSH FORWARD AND IS TOTALLY WITHIN OUR ETHOS HERE AT CCPROS! WAY TO GO VIKTÓRIA! NEXT UP, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH CCPROS? AND WHAT THINGS HAVE YOU FOUND THE MOST BENEFICIAL FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP SO FAR? I’ve been a monthly member for a couple of months but I will never leave :) I love the training and tutorial videos these are basically my main sources of photography education! I especially like the materials about marketing and how to run a photography business. I also LOVE the supportive Facebook group with the amazing mentors and members, both of whom are very happy to help others when they need it. IT’S GOOD TO HERE YOU ARE WITH US FOR THE LONG TERM VIKTÓRIA! AND I AGREE - WE ARE BLESSED WITH THE PEOPLE WE SHARE OUR FACEBOOK GROUP WITH! OK SO CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE WINNING PHOTO? I took the photo of my son in the National History Museum in Tring where I took the kids after school in December 2018. It was too cold to spend the afternoon outside so I decided to head to the museum. They loved running around and showing me all the animals or eggs they found interesting. In this photo, he is looking at some fish.

I used my Canon 6D and my Canon 50mm lens. My settings were ISO 2000 - f1.8 - 1/250 sec. IT’S SUCH A GOOD PHOTO - AS I’VE TOLD YOU ALREADY, IT REALLY RESONATED WITH ME AS A MAMA TO A THREE YEAR OLD! HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU FOUND OUT YOU’D WON THIS MONTH’S PHOTO CONTEST? It felt amazing! I was over the moon. By entering the contest, I’ve already stepped out of my comfort zone and I’m so happy that I did! Winning the monthly contest has shown me the magic that can happen if you are brave and take some ‘risks’. The appreciation from a photographer means a lot to me (not that my mum’s nice words would not count but you get it! ) IT DOES PAY TO BE BRAVE! AND WELL DONE FOR FACING THAT FEAR AND GOING FOR IT - YOU NAILED THE SHOT AND IT WAS A WORTHY WINNER! WHAT WOULD YOU SAY HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WITH PHOTOGRAPHY TO DATE? Running a photography business. When I started, I
FIND VIKTORIA ONLINE:
thought being a photographer is ‘just’ about taking nice photos of other people. Oh man- what I was thinking??? Now I understand how complex it is to run a business. Since I started, I improved my technical skills, I educated myself on poses, I set up my website, I created my logo, I created guides for my clients, I ran several model calls, I prepared contracts, I issued invoices, I set up my Hey Ned account, I wrote blog posts, I set up my Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest accounts… and I feel I’m not even half way through! haha PHEW! WHEN YOU PUT IT LIKE THAT - IT CAN SEEM LIKE A MOUNTAIN OF WORK! BUT YOU DID IT THE RIGHT WAY - LITTLE STEPS - ONE AT A TIME, AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT YOU’VE CREATED A BUSINESS! ANY WORDS OF ADVICE TO OUR NEWBIES IN THE GROUP, OR TO THOSE THAT HAVEN’T YET ENTERED A PHOTO CONTEST? If it’s truly your dream to become a better photographer, don’t be afraid to use everything Cole’s Classroom has to offer you! Ask questions in the group, watch the training materials, enter the monthly contest or Jenn’s weekly challenge… There is so much to do here, so many opportunities that it would be silly to miss out on them!
PERFECTLY SAID VIKTÓRIA! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR INSIGHT WITH US THIS MONTH, AND FOR CLEARLY TAKING ON BOARD WHAT WE TEACH AND IMPLEMENTING IT TO ACHIEVE THE SUCCESS YOU HAVE. WE ARE SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU AS PART OF OUR CCPRO FAMILY, AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE NEXT BIG WIN YOU ACHIEVE! WITH YOUR DETERMINATION AND DRIVE TO SUCCEED… I HAVE A FEELING YOU MAY BE ONE TO WATCH!

PHOTO TIP OF THE MONTH A RT I C L E & I M AG E S BY E D E L C L A R K
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION - TOP TIPS! Do you get those butterflies in your tummy before a shoot? Or if you’re like me, go to bed the night before mentally scrolling through that checklist of things you need to bring with you - despite already ticking them off the PHYSICAL list you created earlier! It doesn’t matter how many sessions I do, I ALWAYS get excited and a little nervous before a newborn session. What I DON’T ever feel though, is worried. Because with the correct preparation, you can handle ANY situation that a newborn may throw at you! I’ve made my own fair share of mistakes… like the time I’d stacked my newborn bed and baskets ready to load into the car, travelled about an hour to the session only to realise I’d left them behind! Or the time that I forgot to pack my puppy pads… those
magical squares of absorbent wonder that has saved my blankets MULTIPLE times! But with each of these scenarios, you find a way to make it work - I improvise with what I have with me, and for the puppy pads, I even used some bin liners… not ideal but did the job in an emergency! The fact is though, the more prepared you are, the easier your job will be. So here are some of my top tips!
1) GET YOUR TIMING RIGHT! Even though you may have already mentioned: “please contact me shortly after the baby arrives” to your client, it never fails that many parents forget to do so. Having a newborn in the house will turn their world on its head… so they may simply forget the promise made to get in touch with you! Make it as easy as possible for your clients by texting them a message to their phone so they can easily save your phone number. Also, as their due date approaches, send a nice email checking up on them; seeing how they are feeling, and letting them know how excited you are to photograph their little one! In this email, I remind them to text or call within the first 1-3 days of the birth. It’s also a good conversation to have because many times you can get a feel for their birth plan

9
(whether it is waiting until 42 weeks or inducing for high blood pressure, pre-term labor, etc.). The conversation also helps keep me at the top of my client’s minds and with my number already saved in their phone, its super easy for them to contact me.
2) WHAT SHOULD THEY EXPECT AT THE SESSION? Of all the tips to share with you, without a doubt at the top of the list is how to set your clients expectations. I make sure ALL of my clients receive a Newborn Preparation Guide (Check out our templates in the treasure chest for these!) and in the guide I advise my clients on how long the sessions usually take, what we will be doing at what point, how I will handle any messes, etc. This is also an opportunity to create the best environment for me to be able to achieve the most optimal results - so reminders about room temperature, how much kit I will be bringing (for posed work it looks like I’m moving in with them!) and the fact that baby will need to feed more often (I explain that the constant moving of baby in addition to the warmer temperature means they will get hungry more often!) all help to make sure there are no surprises on the day. By sharing this information, and if needed repeating the information in a conversation in advance of the session, this will make your clients feel so much more comfortable on the day. If this is their first newborn session, they are probably not familiar with the much slower pace of newborn photography sessions, and may even attempt to apologize to you for it! Having a guide on what to expect makes things easier for everyone. Parents became more comfortable and seemed to just enjoy the process a lot more. And I get to focus on capturing those cute baby toes instead of worrying about factors that could cause disruption… oh, and I look MUCH more professional with a guide as well!

3. WHAT TO EXPECT IN THEIR GALLERY. One of the things that many of our members seem unsure of is how many images parents can expect to see in their final gallery. It is crucial to understand that clients are used to seeing 50-100 images in portrait galleries so when they receive a newborn gallery with only 20-30 images, there is the potential for them to feel a little deflated! I tell clients at least 3 times in the process that my newborn galleries usually contain 20-25 images (although I shoot for 30-40 to impress them!). I explain why it is less than a typical portrait session – from the time it takes to capture the images (calming/feeding/posing/etc.) and the editing process taking a lot longer (individual Photoshop work or fine detail editing vs. global Lightroom adjustments with just a preset). Again in my guide, I talk about quality over quantity - how editing newborn skin and fine details to create each image as a finished piece of art, capturing their baby EXACTLY as it is in all its perfection, is the priority rather than taking lots of snaps and applying a preset before calling it a day. By talking about my editing philosophy and why editing is such an important step for newborns, it is not only interesting to most clients, but it also shines some light on the amount of time I am investing in their final product!

4. FINAL TIPS & TRICKS So setting expectations and being prepared are key to your success - and no two newborn photographers will do everything the same! But here are a couple of my absolute must haves in my car for an on-location shoot: •
My beanbag! I love this bag (the filling is a pain we all have to go through!) and I actually use the full size one from Shootbaby. The trick is to have it firm, but with enough “give” to create a slight well in the center.
•
My 50mm 1.8 and my 24-105 F4 for all my standard shots - purely because these are the ones I own! I like the 24-105 for the space it gives me - but the aperture can be an issue. Ideally I’d love the 35mm instead! I also LOVE my 100mm 2.8 macro to capture those lashes, toes and fingernails!
•
My flash - either speedlight or strobe. As much as I’m primarily a natural light photographer, there are times when the light just isn’t there! So having a backup is essential. I use the flash or strobe on LOW power so it doesn’t disturb baby. Some people prefer a continuous light and that’s also perfectly fine - you do what suits YOU to get the look you want!
•
My little step stool! I am short. And that can cause some problems! So by having a step stool I can get those overhead shots with ease, and it’s just the right height for me to sit on when I am getting those close up detail shots.
•
A selection of wraps, hats, bands, textures, props and colours…. By sending out a client questionnaire using Hey Ned in advance, I already know what colours to pick that will suit their home/nursery!
•
I don’t have a Baby Shusher… yet. But the white noise app on my phone is pretty awesome at calming EVERYONE who hears it!
•
A white, freshly washed and ironed bed cover with matching pillow covers… you’d be surprised how many parents want that “family on the bed” shot… but only have crazy polka dot/giant cat’s face bedsheets! I also bring a sheer white curtain to use to diffuse any harsh light coming in.
•
Finally, my MUST HAVE item is some fresh cupcakes or cookies - for that tired mama who probably isn’t looking after herself as well as she should be! Just stopping off to bring a coffee and cake order to her, and then allowing her that time to relax knowing you have got things under control, will seal you as their family photographer with lots of referrals… probably before they’ve even seen their gallery!
So that’s it - my top tips and tricks for a newborn session. No two sessions are ever the same, and sometimes you’ll have a non sleeper or a crier… but trust your instincts, let baby lead the session and keep baby’s safety and happiness as a priority and you can’t go wrong! If you haven’t taken our courses on Newborn Photography and Newborn Editing yet, make sure to check those out in the course catalog too -and you can go to sleep at night with nothing but excited butterflies thinking about the snuggles you get to have the next day!

MANFROTTO TRIP ODS FOR THOSE SPECIAL SHOTS
Have you ever found it necessary for a solid tripod? Maybe you’re trying your hand at night photography, were asked to shoot a large group of 30 people, or want to grab an epic landscape shot that you want REALLY sharp. While you may not need a tripod for most of your shots, when you need it, you NEED it. Manfrotto is probably the most popular brand of tripods on the market for good reason! Despite their decently hefty price tag, Manfrotto tripods are SOLID (with feet that grip the ground...I have NO clue the technical terminology obviously)! They are lightweight and have built-in leveling systems so you spend less time correcting images in post-processing. YO U C A N F I N D S O M E D I F F E R E N T M O D E L S H E R E
