Weapon Masters
Sort of a Mix up showing modern variations of ancient arms. Caught it this morning and had a Mr Howard Clark, forging a Katana for them to use in the testing. Unfortunately it wasn't properly finished or polished, but still performed as well as a one off Japanese made one. James Williams was used to perform the cuts which was cool. the second episode was the roman scorpion which is a giant crossbow, well worth a watch

yeah hes a bit of a tit, but it is interesting to see his modern take on the old weapons. like all the stages he went through with the Roman Scorpion, using rope then steel, then differing steels, till he had something better than the original.

Interesting, but Chad needs to have a shave and up his meds. mirage __________________ They have given us into the hands of the new unhappy lords, Lords without anger and honour, who dare not carry their swords. Re: Weapon Masters
It was an experience to have the crew here for three days making that. I found Chad to be "somewhat challenging" to deal with. He had never done any forging before, and all things considered, he left here with a remarkably sword shaped object. James was not very happy with the finishing he did. but they simply did not allot enough time here for me to help him finish it beyond 220 machine finish. (not that I really wanted to at that point, either). It was interesting though.

It was interesting to watch, cool to see your workshop and the stuff in Japan was good...but the what was the point of the show? Weren't they setting out to try to prove something, by way of very dubious 'tests' Maybe I'm wrong...but they were testing a modern sword against one made in very traditional Japanese methods/materials...but did James Williams katana not come from the same workshop as Chads creation? __________________ "No one, no one is this world can you trust, not men, not women, not beasts........THIS you can trust." ~Conan's father~

Re: Weapon Masters
Nah, the other sword James used was a Paul Chen sword from CAS/Hanwei. He has several blades that I made, but that one, wasn't one of them. They originally wanted me to help Chad make an L-6 blade the way I do it to compare to the folded steel one. I said no three times to doing the show at all. He (Chad) could not have dealt with forging a sword from L-6 round, the 1086 was challenging enough. I was not especially keen on showing an independent film crew the whole process with no control over the resulting film, either. James and I talked them out of some really silly things that they wanted to do. But the bullet thing just had to be done, from the producer's point of view. I teased them about not using a sword made by the Japanese fellow they filmed. The budget would not allow that, and he wouldn't give them a blade. I don't hold anything against him for that, honestly. He gets about 35K USD for one, polished in shira-saya. The show was more entertaining than I thought it would be, when I finally got a chance to see it. I am glad I did it, now that it's over.

Re: Weapon Masters
Just watched it again, Howard I got to say I love that look on ya face hurry up and leave me alone you idiot...
its sort of
I was thinking it would be L6 but 1086 works fine, Hot lead will not do nothing to a sword its too soft so will split. I was thinking it would of been a high end sword from japan... all they did was test edge geometry and level of polish, since both swords are most likely made from the same steel. Just the one Chad made was convexed and rough.

Just the one Chad made was convexed and rough. That's about the size of it. The Chen blade is "Swedish powdered steel", I am pretty sure it is just high purity 1095 or something very similar. I have never spent the money to get it examined by a laboratory to find out for sure, though. The 1086 modified I have is .86C, and .23V, with only .39Mn, which is quite low for modern steel, and much of the reason I love it so dearly.

Just watched the show and it reminded me of why I work behind the camera and not in front of it. Interesting nontheless. __________________ Self defence is no offence

I made it home from night shift in time to see the programme this morning. Great to see your workshop Howard *envy attack, envy attack* but oh dear what a plank that Chad is ! No wonder you (Howard) had "that look" As someone has already said, I think the guy needs to up his meds It seemed to me that the cutting tests on the tatami were rigged anyway. There seemed to be a definite 'hold' in the chaps swing with the sword Chad made, as if they had almost run out of mats with both swords cutting cleanly through prior to the 'take' that showed Chads not quite making the cut. I am in no way denigrating the cutters integrity by this, I just think that he did what the director/producer wanted to see. To think that a Master would struggle to cut 8" of tatami just because the sword wasn't fully polished seems silly to me as long as the thing had a decent enough edge on it. Fun to watch with a rum-n-coke before bed anyway Just my 2p. __________________ If it's not sharp, it's just a piece of metal.
