Parks: Snow and Ice

In Winter, Parks Staff work 7 days a week from 6 am to 2 pm.

When there is no snow or ice to clear, staff change public garbages, set up seasonal displays, clean up leaves and prepare for the following summer season.

In 2021, Parks staff cleared and sanded over 4000 kms of pathways.

In fall and winter, Park Operations change focus to ensure major pathways and public buildings such as City Hall, Lethbridge Police Station, and public libraries are clear of ice and snow. All of this work is completed with only 20 staff members, compared to over 200 in spring and summer.

Parks crews monitor and maintain nearly 215 kms of pathway and public property frontage in the winter. This work includes ice checks, sanding, de-icing, and clearing snow using backpack blowers, tractors and trucksters outfitted with blades or snowblowers and shoveling by hand .

Areas and specific pathways are categorized into 4 priorities (length of pathway cleared):

• Priority 1: City Facilities, Downtown & Whoop Up Drive (16.5 km) • Priority 2: Schools & Regional Parks (33.5 km) • Priority 3: Community Core Parks & Regional Pathways (157.2 km) • Priority 4: Walkways & City Property Frontage (5.6 km)

Each time it starts snowing again (new snow event) priority routes reset, therefore, it may take longer to clear lower priority routes when it snows several days in a row.
