Brain boosting exercise Cardiovascular workouts and weight training build up muscles and improve physical fitness, but not many people think of exercise as a workout for the mind. Regular fitness training is proven to help relieve mental stress, which often stems from the workplace, and keeps the mind ticking over like a well-oiled machine. Research shows that for 43 per cent of working people, time constraints prevent them from getting to the gym. Demanding careers and heavy workloads take their toll mentally and without regular exercise, productivity in the workplace can suffer, which is bad for both employers and careers. Many workers are failing to schedule regular breaks and lunchtimes, let alone a fitness regime, into their day.

The result is often a sluggish mind and an equally sluggish body. Ros Saunderson, fitness coordinator at LA Fitness, believes the answer is to turn lunch breaks into exercise workouts. "The perfect way to energise your mind is to use your lunch break to take a brisk walk or engage in a short burst of exercise," he says. "The release of endorphins lowers your stress levels considerably and ensures that you return to your desk in a positive frame of mind, ready to the most challenging of work demands." Working life can be extremely pressurised. Saunderson believes exercise is the best way to deal with mental and physical tension, as it reduces the body's levels of stress hormone, cortisol. "Just 20 minutes of exercise a day will make you better equipped for dealing with stressful situations," he says. "I always recommend a vigorous workout for when you are feeling frustrated at work or home. Try boxing, weight training or intensity speed endurance on a treadmill for getting anger out of your system." Bevan Viljoen, a personal trainer at LA Fitness, believes regular exercise is vital for improving working performance and concentration. He says, "I encourage all my employees to take a break at midday and exercise if they can. This ensures I have a more productive taskforce and avoids the midday slump when we all reach for sugary foods as a quick fix." "To demonstrate how we should look at our bodies, I always use the analogy of a sports car - it's no good if it looks great but the engine's not finely tuned." Many research studies have also linked exercise with better quality sleep. Restful sleep is essential for a clear and refreshed mind, preparing you for the challenges work may bring during the day.

Another Slimming World Success Story

Buy a car to match your needs When it comes to buying a car, it’s easy to be wowed by images in the Sunday supplements and ideas of what’s cool from too many hours watching Top Gear . But a car is a big investment and you need to work out what your needs are, rather than Jeremy Clarkson’s. What do you actually use your car for? There’s no point becoming wedded to the idea that you need huge space in the back because on a single occasion three years ago you would have found it useful when bringing a flat-pack wardrobe from Ikea. You’ll pay through the nose for it. Maybe what you really need is a car to do the school run and haul the groceries back from Sainsbury’s once a week with only very occasional longer trips. For others there’s a lot of motorway driving, or moving lots of equipment, or transporting half a dozen people at a time. If you are on a budget - and let’s face it, that’s most of us - there’s no point spending thousands of pounds on features you don’t really need. Especially interior space. A family of four may require an urban runabout and school-run taxi. So what they want is four seats, economy and maybe above average safety. It’s true that a large 4x4 will smooth out the ride over those cursed sleeping policemen between home and school, but is it worth paying thousands and thousands of pounds extra for that and seven seats? Equally, if you travel thousands of miles up and down the country, it’s worth looking for something that provides the levels of comfort you need and a diesel engine’s economy is likely to far outweigh the extra initial purchase cost. Having established the sort of space and features you need, you then need to de-

cide whether you want to buy new or used. If you buy a new car, of course you can choose exactly what you want in terms of model, colour and trim. You’ll know the car hasn’t been thrashed by a previous owner; it will be in pristine condition and will come with a manufacturer’s guarantee of three years or more. But it comes at a price. The most expensive journey you’ll ever make is the one out of the showroom. In a few short moments you’ve lopped four figures off the value of the car when you come to resell. It is true that you’re more likely, though, to find special offers, such as zero per cent finance on a new car and some large discounts if you’re prepared to do your homework, shop around and be a little bit flexible. Depreciation is at its greatest in the first year of a car’s life. So you may want to think about using your budget to look at a second-hand car that’s a year or 18 months old instead. You’ll still get the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty and could even get a bigger or better equipped model within your original budget. Beyond that, if the warranty is an important issue to your peace of mind, it’s worth looking at the many used car warranty schemes that exist. You are most likely to have your own ideas about what constitutes style and reliability when it comes to buying a car. In truth, just about any model of car available today is built to a standard of reliability that would have seemed incredible 20 years ago. Old jokes about poorly made brands just aren’t valid any more. The best way to check reliability, if you have concerns, is to look in the motoring press for the JD Power annual reliability

survey, which reveals owners’ satisfaction with particular models. Some people, of course, want to pay for prestige, which is fair enough. In fact, the extra investment in a particular sporting or upmarket brand isn’t likely to turn into a loss, as the selling price, a few years down the line, is likely to continue to reflect the notional value of the badge. At the other end of the scale, some people want something old and basic from the local used car trader or from the newspaper classified ads. Whichever end of the scale you’re on, you need to factor running costs into your budget. There’s no point using every last penny to get the car of your dreams only to discover that the insurance and running costs are astronomical. So when you have your eye on a car you like, check what the insurance will be, remember the road tax, see how many miles it will do to the gallon and have a rough idea of what regular servicing will cost. Motoring organisation the AA publishes lists of average running costs on its website (www.theaa.co.uk) which include all the elements involved. It may surprise you to discover that the average 1.6 litre petrol-fuelled family saloon doing 10,000 miles a year will set you back an average of 57p per mile. Ultimately you must have a mental wish-list for your new car and work out which features are absolutely essential and those on which you will compromise. Then see how far your budget will stretch. There are lots of cars from lots of sources to choose from, so it’s then just a matter of getting out there and finding what you want at the price you can afford.

Motoring BMW’s impressive fuel economy Six years after it first arrived on the scene, the BMW 1 Series has been redesigned from the ground up. Although it looks quite similar the whole car is new, with larger dimensions in just about every way to give more interior space. It does, however, keep the trademark frontengined, rear-wheel-drive layout of the previous 1 Series. A range of four trim levels will be available right from the on-sale date of September 17, along with five engines all boasting impressive performance, fuel economy and CO2 figures. The two petrol engines are new 1.6-litre turbocharged units, for the first time in a BMW. The base 116i petrol version has 134bhp, covers 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and averages 49.6mpg, while the slightly beefier 118i has 168bhp, reaches 62mph in 7.4 seconds and returns 47.9mpg on the combined cycle. Road tax for both will be £115 per year. With 115bhp, the entry-level 116d diesel can’t match the acceleration of its big brothers, and nor does it better their fuel economy figures. The 141bhp 118d and the range-topping 181bhp 120d return the same 62.8mpg as the 116d, but the more powerful engines knock 1.4 and 3.1 seconds off the 116d’s 0-62mph time respectively, indicating that they’ll be much more punchy in the real world.

All three produce less than 120g/km of CO2, putting them in the £30 per year road tax band. For those buying a 1 Series in Sport trim, an eight-speed automatic gearbox is available as well as the standard sixspeed manual one. Another first for BMW is a production car with less than

100g/km of CO2. In the near future a 116d with the company’s EfficientDynamics technology will be added to the range as a road tax-free option that also returns over 74mpg with a careful mix of driving. Prices will start from £19,375 for a basic 116i ES, rising to £24,720 for the 120d Sport and Urban models.
