Steeplejacks – More Than Just Your Average Roofer At balmore-ltd.co.uk, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of roofing services for commercial, residential, industrial, and non-profit clients. These services cover everything you would expect of a typical roofing firm; installing new roofs, repair existing ones, removing moss, etc. However, we also go way beyond the average company, with rope access and at-height services for everything from church steeples to power stations – not exactly jobs within the capabilities of your usual white-van roofer. These are the sort of services that allow us to carry the ‘specialist contracts’ name and are performed by a special group of workers known as steeplejacks. What is a Steeplejack? A steeplejack is a craftsman whose job it is to scale buildings, chimneys, and church steeples to carry out essential repairs or maintenance. You will generally find our steeplejacks erecting high ladders and building scaffold on various tall structures across Scotland, from bell and clock towers to airport control towers and lighthouses. How does a Steeplejack Work? Steeplejacks do all of their best work at a height and are responsible for maintaining the appearance of the country’s tallest buildings. Their work is carried out initially using a belay rope fall-arrest system (like the ones used by rock climbers), which is attached to ladders and erected to reduce any risk of falling. Once the ladder is in place, abseiling equipment (or a bosun’s chair for traditionalists) is used to allow for an easier ascent and descent, and scaffold is erected to allow work to be carried out safely and efficiently. The work that steeplejacks are called upon to do at height varies greatly and can include anything from the repair and replacement of masonry, to the cleaning and painting of buildings. At Balmore, our roofers in Glasgow also provide a range of extra services not offered by many rope-access and height work firms, including comprehensive inspections and video audits. Steeplejacks have played an integral part in construction for hundreds of years, although they have traditionally operated without the level of advanced equipment used nowadays. Britain even had its very own celebrity steeplejack, the late, great Fred Dibnah, who became a TV presenter as a result of his profession. Sadly, our professionals are much more comfortable at height than in front of the camera!
