The Top 3 Most Common Structural Chimney Problems A chimney is a very simple piece of technology that has been used for hundreds of years. While these are not used as common as they once were domestically, they still adorn many homes and buildings across Scotland and remain crucial for industrial purposes. Chimney maintenance and repair has been at the heart of Balmore's roofing services for 30 years and in that time we have come across numerous problems that compromise the structural integrity of the chimney and lead to potential issues with function.

In the vast majority of jobs that we attend, the root cause generally comes down to one thing: moisture. A chimney, like a roof, is greatly exposed to the elements so, through constant battering from wind, rain, and snow, tends to succumb to moisture. Here are three of the most common cases of structural damage to chimneys that our Glasgow roofers and steeplejacks come across. 1. Brickwork Problems Regular inspections and maintenance are essential in ensuring water does not penetrate the chimney system. While masonry is extremely durable, when neglected, damaged mortar can cause the structure to lean, crumble or, in some cases, completely collapse. In most cases, the problem can be rectified by removing and replacing damaged mortar, but damage that is more serious may require the replacement of moisture-damaged bricks. 2. Cracked Chimney Crown

While many modern residential chimneys are fitted with a chimney cap, many older homes have what is known as a chimney crown. This is basically a masonry roof that covers the chimney and prevents water from seeping in to the masonry below. While a crown does a great job in protecting the chimney, it is unfortunately not immune from water damage itself. Over time, and through changing weather conditions, cracks may begin appear in the crown, allowing moisture to creep into the chimney system and causing potential damage to the lining, firebox, and the walls and ceilings in your home. 3. Damage to Flashing Flashing problems are a leading reason for callouts at our roofers in Glasgow. Flashing is a seal that is used to prevent water from entering where the chimney comes through the roof. Aluminium and tar is generally used to create the seal but, unfortunately, does not last forever, especially without regular maintenance. Ice and moisture penetrating the flashing can cause it to come away from the chimney brickwork, resulting in leakage and considerable damage to the system and to your property. Almost all chimney problems can be avoided through yearly inspections and maintenance. When was the last time you had your chimney looked at? Balmore Ltd is the leading roofers in Glasgow.
