It is a great time to promote the area to the many overseas visitors which will be attending these events so they visit and see what Bewdley has to offer. Great Bed and Breakfast establishments, pubs and an array of restaurants, not to mention the Museum, the Wyre Forest with its many activities, the Severn Valley railway and Bewdley’s jewel in the crown, the West Midland Safari Park. We have the best chance to not only put Bewdley and the surrounding area on the international stage but increase the revenues of many businesses, so lets hear from all those who wish to take part. We all want to be fit
If you had said to me a few year ago I would be joining a gym and participating in a dieting regime, I would have expressed an opinion which couldn’t be printed. Macho, beer swilling, heterosexual male with a few pounds under the belt, and a lot hanging over, lounging on the settee watching the television, and frequenting the biscuit tin with gusto every few minutes, seems the ideal way to spend an evening, especially in the winter. So why the change? Mirrored wardrobe doors. After the installation of some new wardrobes with the mirrored sliding doors, I had no choice every morning but to see myself as probably others saw me, and I didn’t like it much. Apart from the health issues, I suffer with Asthma and thyroid problems, being over weight and unfit didn’t help. I am not a sporting icon, never took part in Cricket, Football, Rugby, (only at school), Athletics or anything that needed exertion so saved my energies for the odd darts game or snooker and of course never when anywhere unless it was in the car. So a change was needed and being local the Seb Coe Health Club seemed the obvious choice. Follow me through the year to see what difference it may make to me. Its going to take some monumental effort to get up in a morning or get out of the chair 6

in the evening, but members who have joined tell me it is enjoyable and that they soon see the benefits of the gym and the swimming. We shall see and await to be convinced but along side the fitness comes the eating healthy campaign. No point putting yourself through it if you don’t do something about the food you are eating. That’s why I will be joining Debbie’s Diet classes, and no doubt she will expect me to participate in one or two of the Zumba sessions, which again, do macho men do that sort of thing. Well apparently they do if you read in the media about famous actors and sports personalities like David Beckham. Skin preparations, wrinkle this and skin tone that, with daily doses of moisturizers, nail bars and pedicures for men, hair products and specialist grooming, not to mention how you smell and of course the fashion industry has now ranges of clothes to rival any of the famous fashion houses which were once the preserve for women. So, is this a new revolution for men. Lets see how I get on over the next twelve months and see how many fellow males join me. New Poliakoff TV drama to be filmed at the Severn Valley Railway

Sequences for ‘Dancing on the Edge’, a five-part dramatisation, are being filmed during the coming week at the SVR’s Kidderminster and Bewdley stations, coincident with the railway’s half-term holiday steam trains, on what is its start-up week of the 2012 season.

The Severn Valley Railway’s Kidderminster Town terminus doubles as ‘Folkestone’ for the drama, where trains are seen arriving and departing ‘for Dover’. The railway which reopens this Saturday after a six-week winter shutdown for track renewals, is providing its vintage seven-coach set of 1920s/1930s LNER teakbodied carriages, and a 1930s-period steam locomotive, the Stanier ‘Mogul’ No.42968.

The Importance of the Spring Equinox
in the calculation of the date of Easter, for Easter always falls on the Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring Equinox. This year Easter falls on Sunday 8th of April as the first full moon after the Spring Equinox is Friday 6th April.
The 20th of March marks the first day of spring as day and night are of equal length at the time of the Vernal Equinox. The equinoxes and the solstices are astronomical festivals which our Neolithic ancestors recognised as turning points in the movement of the sun. From now until the autumn equinox in September, the hours of daylight will be greater than those of darkness, making the Spring Equinox a time of celebration as we are once again liberated from the dark times of winter. This occasion is also of great importance

Fun in the garden Throughout the year We sometimes look out on our gardens at this time of the year and wonder whether the plants, which seem to have become ravaged with the winter frosts, will ever recover. Recover they do, well most of them, but we shall still have to replenish the spaces with a trip to the garden centre. The winters are never kind to fencing and this is certainly a job, which can be tackled now whilst the plants are in their dormant state.

to get the best out of such a small space. Clearing leaves and repairing paths, walls and building raised beds should be tackled at this time of the year, before planting takes place in the spring. Perhaps, you should consider clearing the shed out ready for the spring and throwing away those old sun loungers and cushions, which have probably seen better days. Why wait for the spring, OK so it may be a bit cold and damp but the seasons are short, when you get to spring and summer, so make the most of this mild winter weather and start the tedious job of getting the garden back into shape. Now is the time to get the bargains, visit your local nursery or garden centres, see what’s on offer, and get that inspiration you need to get the garden back into shape

Jargon Busters Part 5 a Toshiba T1600 laptop at a cost of £1500) had a 20meg Hard Drive, but that was around 30 years ago.
Here we are in March already, but with the promise of longer days, higher temperatures and plenty of Sunshine (well, I can try and be positive !!) there’s certainly plenty to look forward to. Ok, where are we headed this issue ?? Those of you who may remember floppy discs in all their glory will probably also recall how limited they were with the amount of stuff you could store on a typical 3.5” disc – 1.44meg to be precise (in fact, if we go even further back we had 5¼” discs (max capacity 720K) and 8” discs, which were WELL floppy, Rolf Harris, where are you now ??). Just to put that in perspective, ONE digital picture from a modern digital camera might just fit on ONE floppy disc !!! So, I think it’s safe to say that floppy discs and floppy disc drives are somewhat redundant in this data-hungry world we live in. Even USB Memory Sticks have grown in size and speed. The first Christmas we were open (2003) I had a guy come in looking for the BIGGEST USB stick available, no matter the cost. I got him a 512meg stick at a cost of £105 !!! We now sell a 4gig USB Memory Stick for a tenner (8 times the capacity) – WOW !! Such is the advance of technology. In fact, my first PC (which was 24

Of course, a computer’s hard drive (they all have one) is where the operating system is stored, plus all the programs you use. “What’s an Operating System?” I hear you shout – basically, Windows, Linux, DOS etc. In essence, without an operating system, your computer is nothing more than a box of electronics with various components interconnected, but without software to make it work - hopefully you get the drift. The Hard Drive is a mechanical device with a number of platters or discs all revolving on a common spindle at speeds up to 10,000 rpm !! In fact, the principle of operation hasn’t changed since their creation in the 1950s, they’ve simply got bigger and faster. A bit like turbo-charging a Model T Ford... Let’s take a look at the main component parts of a typical computer (desktop or laptop) – Processor, Memory, Hard Drive, Motherboard, DVD Drive, Power Supply and so on. Now, I realise we’re only looking at Hard Drives today, but I felt that I needed to mention these other elements to put into perspective how important the Hard drive really is. Basically, EVERYTHING in a computer can be replaced if it fails or is damaged, but the one thing that CAN’T be replaced is the data you have stored on the Hard Drive and here’s the irony – Out of everything in your computer, the Hard Drive is the one thing that is more prone to failing than ANY other part, but you can simply fit another one right ?? Of course, but what happens to the data stored on the one that’s www.yourlocaltimes.co.uk
5: Drives and Storage failed. If you’re lucky, you will get it back if the device is sent to a Data Recovery specialist (we use one in Gloucester), but even they can’t GUARANTEE they can retrieve your precious data (pictures, music, videos, word files etc) which, as far as I’m concerned, makes the Hard Drive the most important part of your computer, even though it’s the part most likely to fail !!! One thing Hard Drives do NOT like is violent shock (being dropped etc), vibration, excessive heat and most importantly – stray magnetism. You place a large electro-magnet near a hard drive and you can well and truly kiss your data goodbye (not that many of us HAVE a large electro magnet lying around the house anyway!!) so treat them with a great deal of TLC, coz you never know when it might fail and don’t think you are exempt, we are all at risk. Hopefully, when Hard Drives go Solid State (no moving parts, all electronic) Hard drive failure will become a thing of the past, but with an average 500Gig SSD (Solid State Drive) costing in excess of £500 (with a conventional standard hard drive around £90 in comparison) I think www.yourlocaltimes.co.uk
it will be quite a while before these faster, slimmer, more reliable storage options become common place. Deep down I look forward to the day the outdated mechanical Hard Drive is resigned to a museum, but until that day, PLEASE make sure you backup your precious data every which way you can...You know it makes sense.

Cook up a treat for Mother’s Day Breakfast blueberry muffins Makes 12 muffins ½ cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 2 cups blueberries, chopped, fresh if possible. Sugar mixed with cinnamon for topping Cream the butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix until blended. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt; add alternately with milk and vanilla. Mash ½ a cup of blueberries and stir into batter. Add remaining whole berries. Grease muffin tins and spoon in the batter, piled high Sprinkle with the sugar/cinnamon topping. Bake at 375 degrees F, 190 degrees C, gas mark 5, for 30 to 35 minutes.
Easy beef stroganoff for the microwave 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 lb sirloin steak, sliced into thin strips 8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced 1 medium onion, sliced ¼ cup water 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon mustard powder 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 1 cup sour cream Place the oil in a large casserole dish and stir in the beef until it is well coated. Cover and microwave on high until the meat is no longer pink, usually 4½ to 5 minutes. Remove the beef from the casserole and put to one side. Add the mushrooms and onion to the meat juices. Cover and microwave until the mushrooms are tender, 5 to 6 minutes. Shake the water and flour in a tightly covered jar and add to the mushrooms. Sprinkle on the mustard powder, salt and pepper. Microwave uncovered for around 30 seconds to boiling point. Boil for around one minute until thickened. Stir in the streak strips and add the sour cream. Microwave uncovered until hot, about one minute. Serve over hot rice, noodles or spaghetti. 26

Do You Sound Like Small Print?
Anyone who has ever arranged insurance over the phone will know that the person at the other end is obliged to read the small print. We’ve already had the paperwork and have read all of the tedious details and get-out clauses. All we want to do is to confirm acceptance and wave our credit card at the phone. But they are going to make the experience as painful as possible. It’s not their fault; they are obliged to do it. Of course, this is the most pointless activity on earth. They are bored with having to go through the script dozens of times a day and so to reduce the pain for both of us they read at high speed to get it over and done with as soon as possible. In so doing it is difficult to adopt anything other than a monotone. We are impatient to be done and their small print voice ensures we don’t listen properly to what they say. The rest of us don’t have to speak like the person on the insurance company phone line do we? But it’s surprising how many people do. Firstly we have my old favourite bête noire, the PowerPointless presentation. The slides are crammed full of words and the presenter reels them off as though they 32

were small print. You see, as soon as they start, they realise that we’ll read faster than them so they race through to try to keep up. Then there is the salesman/woman. The pitch has been learned parrot-fashion and is spouted with rather less character than the parrot would manage. And finally (for now) there is the person at the business event who has to introduce him/herself but rather than speak to an audience would prefer to crawl under the table and hide. They want this ordeal to be over as soon as possible, so again race through their words. I have considerable sympathy for this third group. Nevertheless, sounding like small print isn’t going to win anyone friends. Remember the quote last month from Seth Godin? This is part of it: “We want your humanity. If you can’t do that, don’t bother giving a speech. Just send everyone a memo.” I don’t care if you stumble over the odd word or slightly lose track of where you were going and have to backtrack. I just want you to engage with me, not spout a monologue. Rural Skills Training 2012 A programme of training courses designed to offer new skills and employment opportunities to those living in rural Worcestershire. A series of 6 courses will cover all aspects of running a smallholding and there are other days which will offer training in countryside skills such as fencing, hedge laying, and charcoal burning. On the food production side there will be bread making in a wood-fired oven and turning fruit into pickles and chutneys. Those with fruit trees can learn how to prune them and then turn the end product into juice or cider. Eligible applicants will pay only £25 per course (plus materials costs in some cases) as they have been selected under a programme co-financed by RDPE LEADER. All the courses will run from 9am to 5pm and will be held at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley DY12 2LR. The Ruskin Studio at the farm is an award-winning green oak framed building with easy access and a wood-fired range. Hedge Laying Friday 2nd March repeated Saturday 3rd March A hedge that has been maintained in the traditional style is a beautiful sight! Why are hedges laid and how is it done? We have a great line up nurseries, including many that are new to events in this area. All are real growers, full of enthusiasm and knowledge for their plants. HTIS students to take part in business and engineering challenge Holy Trinity International School in Kidderminster will be one of several Worcestershire schools and colleges talking part in this year’s Business Game being held at Sixways Stadium, Worcester on Friday 2nd March. Holy Trinity International School Head, Mrs Pamela Leek-Wright, stated: “The Business Game is a great opportunity for our Year 12 and 13 students to put their growing knowledge to the test, working together as they solve real-life business and engineering problems, as well as the prospect of meeting local employers.” Worcestershire schools and colleges already confirmed as taking part in next month’s mega Business Game include: Baxter College, King Charles 1 School, Kidderminster College, Wolverley CE Secondary, Bromsgrove and South Bromsgrove High School and Kingsley College Redditch, with many more schools from Worcester, Malvern, Evesham and Pershore also taking part. The End of Grow With Wyre!!! The Grow With Wyre Landscape Partnership scheme has run for 3 years in the Wyre Forest and is now complete! We’ve worked with local people and together planted or restored 40 orchards, planted 19.5km of hedges, surveyed 200 ancient trees, enabled many hectares of woodland to be managed, run training courses on all aspects of orchard and woodland management, employed and trained 5 apprentices, taught 9 local schools about woodlands, enabled over 100 ha of local meadows to be grazed, created a wildlife museum in the forest, restored the habitat of the rare pearl bordered fritillaries in the forest, build a new community discovery centre, with sensory trail and sculptures for people to visit, set up a biological recording centre, mapped the history of the forest and surrounding landscape using LiDAR, restored two old water mills in the forest; Knowles Mill and Coopers Mill, installed 6 woodchip boilers in the local area, created a chip store in the forest to support the wood fuel market, taught local people about sustainable energy and local food, funded a monthly farmers market for local producers and a bus service to the forest, provided grants to local groups to enable them to visit the forest and take part in activities in the woods, provided opportunities and training www.yourlocaltimes.co.uk

On Saturday evening we have a volunteers thank you event and the official viewing of the Grow With Wyre film from 7pm.
