welcome bienvenue Letter from the publisher/ La lettre de l’éditeur I spent three weeks in Greece this past September. It didn’t rain once through our journey through several islands and a road trip through the Peloponnese, which was wonderful. It was a trip of good food and beach days, ATV adventures and sunsets. It’s a remarkably calming place to go, at least in the off season, which was fantastic- until I saw the bridge over the Corinth Canal. A bungee jump company has set up beneath the bridge in a manmade canyon which used to ferry smaller boats from the Ionian Sea to the Aegean. Up to this point, the trip had been comfortable, which was for me a sign that I simply had to take this challenge on. Now, I wouldn’t call myself an extreme sports guy, but I did snowboard and mountain bike quite often in high school, and rugby was my game of choice in university. Those things can be scary in their own right, but standing on the edge of a platform over a stone funnel brought some things into perspective. How many other platforms have I been standing on in my normal life, afraid to jump, constantly checking my safety harness, desperate for an excuse not to make that leap of faith? Like always, the fear disappeared the second I decided to jump and was replaced by elation and a warmness than exploded from my chest into the air around me as my heart thudded with pride. I hung there upside down, bouncing, and committed that feeling to memory for when I needed it next. When what you fear is just what you don’t know, then go find out what that fear is. Chances are, when you figure it out, it won’t be there anymore.

Sincerely,

Barry Nashen: One passion the World!

Barry Nashen: Une Passion, le Monde!

Resident Feature by Éliane Légaré

Photos by James Paul Correia

Barry’s passion lies in constantly discovering the World. He creates, organizes and leads adventure trips to different corners of the world. Usually the focus is on hiking or backpacking on some of the most beautiful trails on Earth, however, he always adds some local excursions into the mix like cycling through the countryside and vineyards, sailing along the coastline, riding scooters to remote mountain villages, whitewater rafting in the fastest rivers, or touring a national park, among other things. “Each country or region has its own particular attractions.” says Barry. When asked what brought him into this sideline occupation, he explained that he has been traveling on adventures around the world since his teenage years: cycling in China, tented safaris in the Ngorongoro crater of Tanzania, hiking up Machapuchare in Nepal, backpacking in the Golden Triangle of Thailand, climbing the great pyramid of Giza before they were deemed out of bounds, and even exploring Machu Picchu at midnight under the full moon by bribing the night guard with a bottle of rum! After living all these exceptional escapades, he decided to take small groups of likeminded friends and acquaintances on similar adventures, usually between five and ten backpackers, and this soon became a professional calling. His philosophy is simple and inspiring. For Barry, ”the only way to understand humanity is to experience as many different cultures as time will allow. Once this process of learning begins, there is no knowing where or how it will end. The possibilities are limitless and the benefits are contagious.”

B

arry Nashen has been living on Upper Belmont for about seven years now. When asked what brought him in Westmount, this McGill graduate said, “After years in a sterile downtown condo, it was time to live in a house with a garden and neighbours on all sides.“ He likes the tranquility of the neighbours and that, just like him, his neighbours enjoy tending to their own gardens, watering their lawns, and doing minor repairs. In other words, since they are all often outside in front of their homes, they have loads of opportunities to walk over and chat about whatever is important at the moment: the weather, the upcoming election, weekend and holiday plans, etc. “These conversations define what it is to be part of a community. We are all social beings and I believe it would be a great loss to hibernate when there are pleasant alternatives,” he says.

His passion for what he does is palpable, and if you want to see the world through his eyes, you can always visit his travel blog Giddy Up Travels or the websites of the travel groups he leads (affectionately named SPACY- see the links at the end of the article!). Of course, I took a look at these website and I was nearly overwhelmed by the beauty of the World he’s captured. One of his latest post is about his last trip to Croatia in June 2015. Through my reading, I found myself traveling in my head, with his group. “What I found uniquely exhilarating is that the daylight enters the inside of the cave by the underwater entrance as there is no other source of light. As a result our bodies are illuminated by an eerie blue light, but only from below. We all look like aliens to each other with a blue glow reflecting off our bodies, but only on the parts of our bodies that are underwater.” If

you’re too busy for a vacation, Giddy Up Travels will either scratch the travelogue itch, or make you want to leave even sooner! Barry Nashen is driven by the idea of encouraging others to break through their self imposed limitations and exceed their own expectations. “This is extremely gratifying,” he told Westmount Neighbours. “I remain spellbound by the immense beauty found in nature, particularly as one gets further and further removed from civilization.” he says. When he isn’t travelling, he find some of what he is seeking through sports. Barry participated in the Spartan Beast Race Ottawa few months ago- a gruelling obstacle course race- and placed first in the 55+ category. It seems that when someone has passion, it will find its way out in one way or another. Follow the links below to travel through Barry’s words and his world. SPACY:

ten essential oils for women’s health Dix huiles essentielles pour la santé des femmes By Kellye Fry

Clay Sage has anti-depressant and soothing properties. It is beneficial during women’s menstrual cycles, helps with mood swings and eases discomfort. Add a few drops into an Epsom-salt bath. If the oil is labeled safe for topical use, a few drops can be massaged directly onto the abdomen to ease cramps and discomfort. Lemon has energizing and de-stressing properties. It is wonderful for cleaning and cooking. Add a drop of lemon essential oil into a glass of cold water each day for a refreshing, healthful beverage. Lavender reduces stress and calms nerves. It helps with sleeping problems and aids with skin irritations. This is probably the most used oil in our home. We diffuse it aromatically before bedtime, add it to our baths, and apply it to the soles of our feet before bed. Geranium conditions skin, helps with skin irritation and

balances oil. Add a drop to your facial or body moisturizer, and to your shampoo or conditioner to help balance oil production and moisturize your skin.

Basil is many faceted. It soothes sore and tired muscles, can be used in cooking, helps memory function and focus and soothes insect bites. Apply basil directly to an insect bite or sting. If you are feeling

sore from an extra hard workout, add a few drops into a massage oil and massage tired muscles.

Wild orange invigorates and lifts moods. Add a few drops into your body scrub and feel refreshed and awake as you step out of the shower. Oregano boosts immunity, is purifying and helps with digestive and respiratory function. Oregano can be diffused aromatically to purify the air, or add a drop into a teaspoon of honey to soothe a sore throat. Melaleuca (Tea Tree) contributes to healthy skin and nails and has antibacterial properties. Add a few drops to your laundry detergent for its antibacterial benefits. Frankincense is a mood lifter that helps with skin injuries and irritation. Add a drop to your moisturizer if you have sensitive skin, or diffuse it aromatically for a boost in mood. Ginger aids digestion, helps eliminate motion sickness or nausea and alleviates joint discomfort. Apply a drop to the bottom of your feet after a meal to help help digestion or add a drop to a glass of water to take internally. Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This recipe is truly one of my favorites (refined sugar-free, gluten-free, vegan & paleo). I love setting out a dish at family gatherings or taking them to parties. If you show up with these in hand, I promise you will be complemented well and often! 1 cup raw almonds 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1-1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

1/4 tsp sea salt 2 tbsp maple syrup 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. While the oven is preheating, pour the almonds into a large mixing bowl. Add cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice and salt. Toss to coat. Drizzle the maple syrup and vanilla extract on the almonds. Stir until all almonds are evenly coated with the mixture. Spray a foil lined cookie sheet with cooking spray and spread the almonds on the sheet in a single layer. Cook for 15-20 minutes, turning once, until almonds are roasted. Let cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

realty review Properly Insuring Home Contents Assurer vos bien comme il se doit By Ted Harman,MBA,RIB

Most home insurance policies include an amount of insurance for the contents of the home. Often the amount of insurance for contents is based upon a percentage of the reconstruction value of the house. The percentage can vary between 20% and 125% depending on the insurer and the chosen policy. Properly insuring your contents begins with a home inventory. Completing a detailed inventory of your personal possessions, room by room, including items such as furniture, clothing, furs, art, china, crystal, flatware and kitchen accessories, appliances, collections, and electronics is important. You will find that the inventory can be a very illuminating process, especially at today’s replacement cost. The amount of contents can add up much quicker than we think, largely because we accumulate things over time without thought to their aggregate value. If you open your bedroom closet and think about having to replace every piece of clothing it would be a daunting and expensive task. There are comparatively simple ways to complete your inventory. Some insurers provide detailed inventories that you can complete. Or, you can stand in the middle of each room in your home and take digital pictures facing each of the four walls. Do the same for your home office. Open each closet and bureau and photograph the contents. Photograph your storage areas for tools, sporting goods, and any outdoor accessories. This would allow you to have a record of the contents of the rooms, the furniture, the art on the walls and contents of bookcases and display cases. You can then provide the pictures to your insurance broker for safe keeping in the event of a claim, or take a copy offsite to the office. Art, objets d’art, china, silverware and jewelry require particular care when insuring your home. These items usually have maximum limits in value stipulated in the policy wording. You can specifically

President of ACCENT Solutions d’Assurance

insure these items on your policy thereby eliminating problems with the settlement process and, in most cases, removing the deductible that would otherwise apply. We recommend that you have professional evaluations done to ensure that the amount of insurance is adequate to replace the item in the event of loss.

your health Chronic Sinusitis

New procedure helps patients breathe easier Une nouvelle procédure aide les patients à mieux respirer By David Martin, MD

When we get a cold, it usually goes away in a week or two. For many who have chronic sinusitis, however, symptoms such as stuffiness and pressure do not go away and can be quite uncomfortable. Chronic sinusitis causes headaches, nasal congestion and a decreased quality of life. Most sinus infections are successfully treated with medications, often antibiotics. In cases of prolonged sinusitis, topical treatments are commonly utilized to treat the inflammation. When medical treatment fails, surgical treatment can be utilized to relieve the symptoms. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by family history, allergies, nasal polyps, sinus disease, as an effect of asthma, or in some

cases, the cilia do not cleanse the sinuses properly. When medications have failed, most patients can benefit from a surgical procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty. This minimally invasive, outpatient procedure can alleviate blocked sinuses through the insertion of a guided catheter into the nostrils. It allows a balloon to be inflated in the sinus passageway, dilating the opening. This results in improved drainage of the treated sinuses. The balloon is inflated for approximately 10 seconds per sinus, and the entire procedure lasts less than an hour. Compared to traditional surgical Symptoms of treatments for chronic sinusitis, Chronic Sinusitis Balloon Sinuplasty is less invasive • Headaches in that little or no tissue is removed • Nasal and it leads to quicker recovery.
