PORTFOLIO. Colin Williams

Welcome.

Hi, My name is Colin Williams and I am a fourth year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I am currently seeking an 8 month cooperative work-term placement starting January of 2020. I believe that architecture can be learned not just through the drawing, but through the hands as well. I hope that my enthusiasm for diving into architecture and construction head first is expressed while you’re viewing my portfolio. Get dirty, Have fun.

October 12, 2019 To whom it may concern: As co-coordinator of the Waterloo School of Architecture DesignBuild program, I was introduced to Colin Williams during his second year at the school. His work demonstrated an exceptional maturity and confidence, and he quickly emerged as a natural leader within the class. I invited Colin to join our office for the 2019 summer cooperative work term, and he continues to work with us on a part time basis. Colin brings an obvious care for both the material and social aspects of architecture, showing curiosity and ingenuity in how the construction process can unfold in the best way possible for everyone involved. His work while at our office began with design development and construction process drawings leading to site construction for a small private library and residential addition. Colin was physically involved in all aspects of construction including site work, concrete formwork and finishing, rough carpentry, insulation and weather barrier. Colin has an exceptionally positive attitude and a great desire to learn. I would not hesitate to recommend him as an addition to your team.

Yours Truly,

Paul Dowling, Principal BES, B Arch, OAA DesignBuild Co-Coordinator, University of Waterloo School of Architecture

Peltaeum.

Peltaeum Dowling Architects Cambridge, ON.

Peltaeum is a net zero personal library and residential addition designed to house one of the largest personal collections of Haulocaust and Auschwitz literature in the world, housing well over 7000 editions. My third coop was split into two segments; the first, as an architectural intern, the second, as a construction labourer constructing the designed project. Thoughout the project, I had the opportunity to participate in the detailing and design of the project. Then, swiftly put down the mouse and picked up the hammer to engage in every aspect of the building process. This included the excavation, formwork, framing, sheathing and the finishing carpentry of both projects.

Scales.

Scales

UBC Centre for Advanced Wood Processing. Vancouver, BC.

‘Scales’ was designed as an experimental crossing of traditional materials with contemporary building technologies. Through the development of complex parametric design algorithims and the introduction of a 7-axis CNC robotic arm a unique shape and connection method was devloped to turn an ordinary sheet of mahogany plywood in to an intricate wooden sculpture. Every year, students from the University of British Columbia, University of Waterloo and the University of Stuttgart collaborate to explore a specific theme of wood designs, with the aim to push the building industry in a progressive direction. This year, the goal was to explore the idea of shingling - an age old method of eliminating water permeability.

Isumanivivik.

Isumanivivik /Place of your own thoughts/. Kujujjuaq, QC.

The promotion of Inuit arts in a cross-cultural context as a means of preserving Inuit culture serves as the grounds for a new crafts school based in Kuujjuaq. The curriculum will bolster a contemporary Inuit arts culture which pushes the boundaries of traditional craft, iconography, and meaning with modern, southern techniques and materials. From a pragmatic standpoint, the project addresses a lack of jobs as the leading cause of unemployment in Nunavik and produces an environment where the statistically supplemental or recreational traditional and cultural activities of Inuit can alternatively support northern life. The realities of the existing arts economy, Inuit arts culture, and northern education inform the programmatic and physical needs of the school. Programs include carving space, a woodworking shop, a fashion studio, drawing studio, printmaking studio, classroom space, photo studio, residency for masters, and gallery-sales space showcasing student work. The interstitial space between these programs acts as a mixing ground for collaboration and experimentation of cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural nature.

Ascension.

Ascension A study of cinematic affect. In collaboration with Callum Nolan, Patrick Stephen, Vince Chuang and James Kwon.

Ascension is a world where light has become a rarity. As a response, light is harboured in glowing columns in which the city is shaped around. The architecture of the city cultivates, manipulates, and is defined by the characteristics of light. The presence and parallax of the layers of light guide movement and program; the city has become a canvas where light paints and obscures, reveals and hides. Ascension, a city that dances with the light, offers a multitude of spaces, all of which rely on the visual, from a quiet place of worship, an open gallery, or a gathering space. Selected for permanent display at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture.

Grounded.

Grounded York University Master Plan. Toronto, ON.

Grounded. Community is built from the ground up. The ground on which one treads informs their movement, their journey and their destination. By manipulating these grounds, we can change movements and interactions within space, as well as with other passer-throughs. Including and encouraging all forms of non-vehicular transportation, varying sizes of paths are cut through building masses to allow flow from one side of the site to another. The flat paths inform uninterrupted and direct passage ways. Between these exist three variations; building masses, lowered ground and raised ground. Lowered ground gives opportunity and momentum for recreation and congregation. The raised ground suggests removal from the movement and offers repose. The topographically suggested park spaces offer undulating forms in which a variety of activities are fostered. Variation of spaces are discenrable as you navigate through the complex, creating a cohesive ground plane that harbours community interactions.

Asigin.

Asigin /Gather/Collect/. Missisaugas of the New Credit Reservation, ON.

Since the completion of a two year project organized through the University of Waterloo Design-Build program, ‘Asigin’ has become the most significant place of cultural gathering for the Missisaugas of the New Credit Annual Pow-Wow. In collaboration with the community and a selected group of second year students, a design was arrived upon which represented the internally focused values of the users and a materially sensitive palette which respects the surrounding context and the land in which it is rooted. Over the two year process I had the privillidge of filling a senior role as a project coordinator and teaching assistant. My main role was the guidance and coordination of second year students who had a wide spectrum of building experience. The project was developed mainly through prefabrication at the shop located at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture and the rest was assembled on site.

Flow.

Flow Floodplain Analysis. Brantford, ON. In collaboration with Julie Niu, and Katty Cybulski.

The Grand River serves as a historic dadum for the social, cultural, and ecological aspects of Southern Ontario. As such, we carried out an indepth study on a portion of the Grand River, and the relationship between the land and the fluxuation of water level. We focused on the carving of the landscape during high river flow and the impact that it had on the built, and natural environments.

Hand-stuff

Analog Model Making. Through the exploitation of materiality, permeability, and massing, a model can serve as one of the most useful tools an architect has in the process of developing and representing an idea. I am a firm believer in the power of a skillfully crafted model, and as such have prioritized this as a key skill in my repetoire of design tools. Enjoy.
