I have enjoyed working on each issue, but this project has been a labor of love. As we roll out the Spring 2018 issue, it is our privilege at Living Well to give center stage to some of the most inspiring women in our community. They will be the first to say they represent only a small portion of the many women that make a difference in our city every day. I have noted several common threads running through the tapestries of these beautiful stories. ~ These women have chosen to use their talents and abilities to serve and “give back” to this community they love. ~ They are undaunted in their quest for excellence. ~ They are goal-setters who have overcome many challenges. ~ They have found their own unique ways to balance family and career. ~ They have purposed to be role models for their children. ~ They each have a humble spirit about their positions of leadership. We thank them, along with the hundreds of other women in our community, for their contributions. Their guiding principles are setting a benchmark for other women who will come after. Advanced Planning April 16th is what is referred to as National Health Care Decision Day. If you are interested in getting help with advanced planning, reach out to Brookdale and ask for communities participating in National Health Care Decision Day.

By: John McKinnon, Brookdale

A

topic concerning health care that is not mentioned enough is the planning for advanced health care. When families begin to search for senior care solutions, having advanced care planning directives in place is often times a requirement of many health care providers. Health care providers typically request documents from patients receiving care to protect themselves and to gain a deeper understanding of the patient’s personal preferences. These conversations are much easier to have when a person still has all of their mental faculties, and the agent is able to more effectively ensure the person’s wishes are met. While these advanced care planning conversations are not easy for families to have with a loved one, often times this planning prepares people for some of the most difficult moments and make the planning of ones “last days” much easier. 12

With advanced care planning, there are two main areas to address.

1. The first being the scope of treatment a person would like to receive.

2. The other area to address is the assignment of responsibility to an agent or proxy.

With advanced care planning, there are two main areas to address. The first being the scope of treatment a person would like to receive. This is often referred to as a living will or a medical advanced directive. The advanced directive refers to the life-prolonging measures that health providers are able to take to extend one’s life. This includes questions about CPR, medical interventions, artificially administered nutrition,

been assigned an agent or proxy, the hospital or the legal system often get involved and assigns a decision maker. In health care, this is a gray area, characterized by the complexities of distinguishing the appropriate situation for the hospital to assign an agent or involve the legal system to assign an agent. With these considerations in mind, it is always best to assign an agent well beforehand.

and even organ donation. The other area to address is the assignment of responsibility to an agent or proxy. This is done in any number of legal documents; the most common being a medical durable power of attorney, medical proxy, or guardianship. Types of Diabetes

A Comprehensive Approach to Prevent and Control Diabetes in Our Community

Type 1 - generally affects younger people and accounts for about five percent of all diabetes cases. It is not caused by lifestyle or diet. Type 2 - most common form of diabetes. More likely to develop for overweight patients who are not physically active. Gestational - occurs in women who have never had diabetes and who experience high blood pressure during pregnancy.

W

ith 30.3 million Americans living with diabetes, odds are yourself, someone in your family, or someone you’re close to, has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes affects people from all walks of life, all over the world. Diabetes awareness is critical. So everyone, including healthcare professionals, organizations, and communities across the country can bring attention to diabetes and its impact on millions of Americans. Nationwide, approximately 86 million people are identified as having prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal. Without action, prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes within five years. Because diabetes can result in serious health issues – heart disease, vision loss and kidney failure – it’s important to develop and stick to a healthcare plan to prevent or manage diabetes. At the Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center, the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) helps patients learn how to change their lifestyles to prevent type 2 diabetes. “Colorado Springs is popular for being one of the healthiest cities in America but type 2 diabetes is a real concern even in this community,” said Judy Kibby, Certified Diabetes Educator, Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Coach, and DTTAC Master Trainer Select for Penrose-St. Francis. “We are striving to meet the healthcare needs of our community by preventing a disease that may not only be painful and devastating but also tremendously costly. Facing a potential diabetes diagnosis is very scary and the impacts of 14

the disease can be severe and far-reaching. But it’s not the end of one’s life; it’s rather an opportunity to create a lifestyle that is healthier and to use a variety of resources to do that,” explained Kibby. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services offers multidisciplinary services designed to help patients take control of diabetes, reduce its risks, and learn how to live a full, active life. Through a National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), recognized and awarded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center is dedicated to nurturing the health and wellness of the communities we serve. The National Diabetes Prevention Program at the Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center is one of two fully recognized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in all of Colorado. The NDPP is based on research led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and CDC. The program is facilitated by seven trained Lifestyle Coaches in community organizations and clinics. The program includes 16 weekly sessions in the first six months, followed by six twice-a-month sessions. A large majority of the participants who have completed the NDPP with Penrose-St. Francis lost between five to seven percent of their body weight by changing their eating habits and increasing their physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week. Those same participants lowered their risk of developing type 2 diabetes as indicated by lowering their A1C levels.

Facing a potential diabetes diagnosis is not the end of one’s life; it’s rather an opportunity to create a lifestyle that is healthier and to use a variety of resources to do that.

“There have been 78 people signed up for our program at the Health Learning Center and we have achieved a retention rate of more than 85 percent over the past year,” Michael Campos, Grant Coordinator, listed the accomplishments of the NDPP. “Six different cohorts who have gone through the program lost an average of six percent body weight during the 12-month program. Our participants are proof that the program is effective in preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes.” The Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center provides education, counseling, and medical services to help prevent and treat chronic diseases and health issues in patients of all ages. The multi-disciplinary team takes a comprehensive approach to care by combining medical nutrition therapy, anticoagulation monitoring, diabetes care, and foot care in one convenient location.

Symptoms of Diabetes Blurry vision Excessive thirst Extreme hunger Frequent urination Irritability Increased fatigue Slow to heal cuts/bruises Tingling/numbness in hands and feet Recurring bladder, skin, or gum infections

Living with diabetes can be challenging to manage, but patients don’t have to figure it out on their own. At the Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center, educators, nurses, and dietitians work together to tailor individualized plans designed to gain control of their health. We are committed to providing complete diabetes care in Colorado Springs. Know Your Score: Don’t Wait for Cardiovascular Disease A Heart Scan takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and it does not require patients to ingest contrast material; it is fast and painless.

C

ardiovascular disease is the #1 global killer, with more people dying each year from heart attacks and strokes than any other cause, according to the World Health Organization. Cardiac and vascular disease can affect anyone, men and women of all ages, races, and walks of life. The Penrose-St. Francis Heart & Vascular Center and Imaging Services provide award-winning care for heart and vascular disease, with a highly-skilled team of cardiologists, cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and other specialists who tackle heart and vascular disease from several fronts, including prevention. A Heart Scan helps identify calcium plaque levels in heart 16

arteries, so if the score is elevated, patients can make appropriate lifestyle and medication changes. These changes can be the catalyst to avoiding or reducing a person’s chance of a heart attack or stroke. This Heart Scan is offered at Penrose Hospital & St. Francis Medical Center, the only locations in Colorado Springs where the scan is read by a certified Radiologist and a Cardiologist. The benefits of a Heart Scan are far-reaching and especially critical to patients who have pre-existing conditions that complicate or compromise their cardiovascular health. Jeffrey Rusch, 60, has seen his life change drastically since Nov. 2016, when he got a Heart Scan and discovered his calcium

“We are very good at caring for chronic illnesses, but we need to focus on catching people at earlier stages of cardiovascular disease.” ~ Dr. Brian Metz

score was dangerously elevated. He was referred to a cardiologist for preventive treatment, received a heart stress test and was prescribed medication to stabilize the plaque in his arteries. “I had recently retired when I decided to get the Heart Scan, trying to get a better grasp of my health. I had been on blood pressure and cholesterol medication for a while and I thought it would be a good idea. Seeing my score sent me into a mild panic, but I was immediately connected with a cardiologist who helped me improve my heart health,” Rusch explained. “I feel great now and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my heart health. I’m still on meds, but I know that this is the correct treatment for me.” Individuals who can benefit from the Heart Scan are men over 45 or women over 50, past or present tobacco users, anyone with a history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides, a personal history of diabetes, or family history of heart attacks (parents or siblings). The Heart Scan includes a five-page report with a full breakdown of specified coronary artery scores, immediate results and consultation with a cardiac nurse, and a review and recommendations by a cardiologist if the score is elevated. A Heart Scan detects calcified plaque in the heart’s coronary

arteries by measuring the density of the calcium particles in the plaque along the coronary artery walls. Dr. Brian Metz, a cardiologist with nearly 30 years of experience in cardiovascular disease, stressed the importance of a preventive care approach. “We are very good at caring for chronic illnesses, but we need to focus on catching people at earlier stages of cardiovascular disease,” Dr. Metz said. “Younger patients have a variety of resources available to them to help prevent heart attacks or strokes.” From prevention and screening to advanced heart imaging technology and minimallyinvasive robotic-assisted heart surgery, the Penrose-St. Francis Heart & Vascular Center provides a full scope of care for any type of adult heart condition. A high level of plaque can potentially block the coronary arteries which carry oxygenrich blood to the heart. Finding out a calcium score can help a patient’s physicians determine the best treatment for slowing the progression of coronary artery plaque, also known as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). A Heart Scan takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and it does not require patients to ingest contrast material; it is fast and painless. The scan is performed with patients flat on their backs and a technologist will ensure that patients are comfortable prior to performing the Heart

Scan. Patients can resume normal activities immediately after the scan. A cardiac nurse meets patients after the Heart Scan to review results. If the calcium score is elevated, a cardiologist makes follow-up recommendations for patients and their primary care physicians. Everyone at the Penrose-St. Francis Heart & Vascular Center is committed to providing awardwinning care for heart and vascular disease and educating patients and their doctors about treatment options to make the most informed health care decisions.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT: Please call (719)776-8010 and choose Penrose Hospital (2222 N. Nevada Ave.) or St. Francis Medical Center (6001 E. Woodmen Rd.). The Heart Scan is available at both locations for patients’ convenience. Please check insurance carriers as a Heart Scan may be covered under a patient’s plan; the outof-pocket cost could be $149 or less, depending on insurance carriers and plans. Phone: (719) 776-8010

Back Pain Basics Spondylolisthesis and Spinal Stenosis Low back pain can come from many sources. Two of the more common issues we see in adults are spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis.

Spondylolisthesis

Spinal Stenosis

SPONDYLOLISTHESIS

SPINAL STENOSIS

Spondylolisthesis is a shift in the alignment of the bones in the spine. It is a slipped bone, not a slipped disc. This can occur due to several reasons in both adults and children. The most common causes in adults are either microfractures in the spine or arthritis. Small microfractures can occur in the spine, frequently in the teen years, and for some reason these fractures sometimes do not heal. Years, even decades later, the bones can begin to shift and pain can begin. Arthritis in the joints of the spine can also allow the bones in the spine to shift , similar to severe arthritis in the fingers causing the finger joints to become crooked. This shift in the alignment can significantly traumatize the disc at this level, and can narrow nerve canals causing pinched nerves in the spine. X-ray is the first test for diagnosing spondylolisthesis. Flexion and extension x-rays may be performed to see if you have instability at the level of the slippage. Lumbar MRI and EMG studies assist even further with diagnosis.

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the central canal in the spine that houses the spinal cord and the nerves that go to the lower extremities. This typically occurs as a result of arthritis and degenerative disc changes crowding the canal.

COLivingWell.com

Classic symptoms for lumbar spinal stenosis include difficulty with prolonged standing and walking. When walking, people can develop pain radiating into the lower extremities, fatigue, numbness, and weakness in the legs. The symptoms often rapidly improve if they are able to sit down. When a person stands upright the spine loads and the spinal canal closes, if a person leans over or sits the spinal canal opens. A person with spinal stenosis may have difficulty walking long distances if they are standing upright, yet if they are able to lean over a shopping cart they can walk much further.

“

Classic symptoms for lumbar spinal stenosis include pain and numbness in the legs with walking that improves when one sits down.

Treatment 1. Living with symptoms. 2. Spinal epidural injections - this is a cortisone injection into the spine, how much this helps and how long it lasts is a gamble. There are risks with spinal cord injections including infection, nerve injury, and bone density loss with repeated injections. 3. Lumbar facet rhizotomy, where the nerves to the arthritic joints are burned to block pain can help some patients. This lasts on average 6 months. 4. Surgery - reserved for severe pathology.

General Recommendations 1. Exercise is important. In both conditions exercise in a position where the back is flexed (curled forward) tends to be more tolerable and effective. Recumbent bicycle riding is an excellent example. 2. One should avoid extension exercises (arching the back), as these close the spinal canal, compress the arthritic joints, and can worsen pain. 3. Maintain a healthy weight.

4. Avoid lumbar spinal decompression, which is the same thing as spinal traction. It is not effective for these conditions, and can actually make symptoms worse. 5. Avoid high velocity spinal adjustments, these can traumatize the area. 6. Being cautious with activities, especially avoiding heavy lifting. The treatment options are limited, and it is better to avoid injury.

Back pain affects most of us during our lifetimes. The causes can be varied. Spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis are two of the common issues we see in adults, and frequently these two issues occur simultaneously. If you are experiencing severe back pain, or symptoms radiating into the lower extremities, it is important to seek medical attention.

Is Our Pet’s Food a Cause for Concern?

By: Laurinda Flaks

As we continue to see recalls on pet food and treats, the FDAAA would appear to be ineffective.

T

here is much discussion among groups in the pet care industry regarding the safety of pet food and the measures in place to ensure healthy food. Eleven years ago, in March of 2007, the largest pet food recall in American history took place. The recall was due to Melamine-contaminated wheat gluten in over 100 brands of pet food manufactured in China. Wheat gluten is a grain by-product which is commonly used in the production of pet food as it provides a cheaper alternative to muscle meat protein or whole grain carbohydrates. Melamine is an industrial chemical that when ingested causes kidney failure. A few of the top pet food companies whose brands were affected by the contamination were Hills Pet Nutrition, Nestle Purina Pet Care, Del Monte Pet Products, Iams Company, and Procter and Gamble. The recall was a result of public outcry over the estimated tens of thousands of pets becoming sick and 22

COLivingWell.com

several thousand of them dying. The big question is, “How does something like this happen and is it likely to happen again?”In an effort to create a less expensive product by using inferior quality ingredients, our pets are suffering the potential for health problems including arthritis, periodontal disease, diabetes, and cancer. Most pet food companies outsource the making of their food and are only involved in the distribution of it. The Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act was put in place by Congress after the 2007 recall to improve the safety of pet food. The FDA was required to establish a pet food adverseevent reporting system, improved definitions of pet food ingredients and standards, and improved pet food labeling. The only improvement to date is the reporting system in the event there is a suspected contamination. As we continue to see recalls on pet food and treats, the FDAAA would appear to be ineffective.

As a pet parent, there are steps you can take when choosing your pet’s diet, whether it be kibble, canned food, or raw when being committed to the health of your pet over their lifetime.

1

Make sure the brand of food you are feeding is made by the same company selling it.

2

Read the ingredient label and know what each ingredient is. Marketing is great at producing healthy-looking food photos on their packaging and in their commercials, but that is not necessarily what you are buying. Check online periodically for recalls on pet food and snacks.

3

Look for natural preservatives Vitamin C and E or no preservatives at all. Check for humangrade ingredients instead of feed-grade ingredients.

4

Buy the best food you can afford. Raw and fresh cooked diets can be expensive, so an alternative is to use real unprocessed pet food as a topper or mixed with a superior quality kibble a couple of times a week. Something else to consider when purchasing pet food - is your pet enjoying their food?

Ingredients to avoid are: Corn and wheat gluten Meat and grain meals and by-products BHA – Butylated Hydroxyanisole BHT – Butylated Hydroxytoluene Ethoxyquin Food Dyes: Blue 2, Red 40, and Yellow 5 and 6 Propylene Glycol Rendered Fat

Partnering for Success Marketing Your Business in 2018

R

ecently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lola, President and CEO of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber - to discuss how we could align our common goals and partner together for the good of Colorado Springs businesses. I have always had such esteem for the mission of the Southern Colorado Women’s Chamber, and admire how their values and goals align with my own.

I learned in my early years that marketing is crucial to the vitality of a business. I also learned early on that I didn’t have time to do it on my own. When your main priority is actually running your business, the marketing can get neglected. The key to success is building the right team around you, and sometimes that includes hiring outside specialists for the things in which you are not an expert.

MOBILE Mobile phones have completely disrupted how consumers absorb information. The digital world moves fast, and businesses need to embrace it. The agency you hire should offer digital options; they are experts who look at new trends and efficient ways to reach and positively communicate with your audience.

THE EXPERT Speaking to the person executing your projects and speaking to a consultant is very different. Make certain you are working with someone who truly understands your business and your target audience. Your agency should be able to talk about your goals, and then develop and execute a winning marketing plan.

It is critical for the agency you trust your money with to be able to prove their performance with metrics and tangible data that shows their plan is working for your goals. Observing that data often—and pivoting when necessary—is what makes a marketing plan successful. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the different pieces that go into the ever-growing marketing industry. I firmly believe in delegating tasks to experts in the field. I hope these tips help you ask the right questions and find the right partner to help you grow your business this year.

Life Strategy Design There used to be a day when we had to conform to fit in the corporate culture. Now the culture conforms to the workforce—every experience curated to create a carefully designed future. There used to be a day when real talent waited behind a gate, like a purebred horse chomping at the bit to run at full speed. Today talent that’s pent up too long will find another horse race. he old rules of leadership would say conform. The new rules of leadership say invent. Human capital trends are pointing to a workforce that won’t be contained by the rules of HR. Human Resources in this era is more about humans, and the resources that serve their priorities as the engine behind the brand.

Some of us are watching this energetic generation demand more from employers than we did. We can have two reactions: we can moan that these young people need to pay their dues like we did or we can glean some courage from this generation to reinvent our own future. We can let life happen to us or we can develop the mindset and toolset to curate our own future.

FALLING - Is your parent falling? To determine the answer, is your parent covering up bruises he or she doesn’t want you to see?

CLEANLINESS - When you look around their house or yard, is it as neat and clean as it used to be?

Care for the 2 “EYE’s” in Nutrition! By: Dr. Ted Archdale

R

emember what your mother always said: “Eat your fruits and vegetables!” Moms do know best, especially when it comes to your eyes. Every cell in the human body needs a variety of nutrients to thrive, and the cells in your eyes are no exception. The retina, the light-sensitive layer in the back of the eye, is the most metabolically active tissue in the entire body and needs specific nutrients to function optimally. Recent studies show that we can keep our sight and maintain good vision by eating healthy. This, along with protecting your eyes from environmental influences such as smoking, blue light, and UV exposure, is critical to maintaining good vision throughout your life. Lastly, we know genetics play a role in eye disease. What we eat and our environment can influence our genes. Your family history of eye disease and getting regular eye examinations will ensure early detection and intervention if needed. The foods we choose determine the quality of the nutrients our bodies receive and in many studies poor nutrition has been associated with disease. The most well-known studies about eye disease, AREDS and AREDS2 (Age-Related Eye Disease Study-phase 1 and 2),

looked at nutritional effects on the progression of eye diseases-namely Age Related Macular Degeneration. These studies concluded that with the use of certain supplements in certain patients, the risk of advanced disease could be reduced. So what does your diet need to include to support your eye health? A well-balanced diet including fruits and vegetables is the best source for the nutrients your eyes need. Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, E, Zinc, Omega 3’s, as well as Lutein and Zeaxanthin, are the important nutrients for eye health. Eating peppers, carrots, fish, nuts, meat, and citrus will cover most Omega 3, Vitamin, and Zinc recommendations. Good sources of Lutein and Zeaxanthin are found in green vegetables like kale, collard

greens, spinach, broccoli, beans, peas, as well as eggs and corn. When inadequate amounts of these nutrients are consumed or if early disease is detected, supplements may be needed and recommended. As with any disease process, early detection is critical. Newer instrumentation available, including digital retinal imaging (Optos) as well as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), helps eye doctors detect areas of concern much sooner. So as we get older and our moms are not around, we need to heed their advice and be watching for eye disease that could cause vision loss. When I think about eye nutrition I always remember what my mother would say, “Eat those carrots, they are good for your eyes, have you ever seen a rabbit with glasses?”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Ted Archdale, owner of Archdale Eyecare, is a dedicated eye doctor with over 20 years of experience. Maintaining Perspective

during times of increased market volatility

D

uring times of heightened volatility and stock market stress, investors may naturally question their asset allocation.

The third quarter of 2015, January 2016 and the months following the U.S. presidential election in 2017 are recent examples of frenzied times. For investors or advisors trying to determine what action, if any, to take in response to increased market volatility, a long-term perspective can be helpful. This graph (opposite page) depicts the price level of the S&P 500 Index and highlights each bull and bear market since 1950. During this period, the average bear

Since 1950, there have been nine bear markets for the S&P 500 index, defined as a 20 percent or more decline in market value from the Index’s previous peak. Bear markets typically occur when investors believe stocks are overvalued and more investors look to sell stocks than buy them. While the circumstances leading to market downturns have varied in the past, it’s important to recognize that a bear market occurs every few years and is not particularly remarkable in a historical context. The graph on side one shows that each bear market to date was usurped by a bull market that both recovered from previous lows and grew to new highs.

Since 1950, there have been nine bear markets for the S&P 500 index, defined as a 20 percent or more decline in market value from the Index’s previous peak.

market lasted approximately 320 trading days (1.3 years), exhibiting an average price decline of about 35 percent. In contract, the average bull market lasted over 1,290 trading days (5.2 years), representing a trough to peak increase of roughly 164 percent. In other words, the duration and magnitude of bear markets, though painful, pale in comparison to bull markets, underscoring the importance of investing across full market cycles and rewarding investors who maintain long-term perspective.

Today may be no different. Following the market bottom of March 2009, the current market expansion is over 2,200 days old (and counting), reflecting an increase of over 290 percent. The recent bouts of volatility in 2015 and 2016 offered a lot in the way of noise but ultimately failed to breach a 20 percent bear market threshold as of this writing. Markets follow the path of least resistance, which is to say they rise when buyers exceed sellers and fall when

sellers exceed buyers. The truth is exacerbated by investor psychology with greed on the rise and fear on the fall. In the interim, there’s market volatility, which is neither expansionary nor recessionary and akin to turbulence on a plane. Disciplined investors don’t succumb to market volatility just as passengers don’t remove themselves from a bumpy flight. While it remains unclear how long the current bull market will last, how severe the subsequent downturn will be or how much volatility will emerge in-between, find wisdom in stock market history as rewards await the long-term investor. *The Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) is an unmanaged group of securities considered to be a representative of the stock market in general. hat is the first thing you notice when you look at a picture of someone? Is it their hair? Their clothes? More likely, the first thing people notice in a picture of themselves or someone else is their smile. Our smile is how we display positive emotions; it’s also a tool we use to project confidence. Everyone’s smile adds character and individuality to their appearance in a way nothing else can. Over time, the appearance of our smile can change. A 2012 survey conducted by the American 54

COLivingWell.com

Association of Orthodontics revealed that 1/3 of Americans are unhappy with the appearance of their smile and want to improve it. Modern dentistry has lots of options available, ranging from simply changing the color of teeth, to changing the shape and positioning of teeth. Let’s take a look at the treatments available to change the appearance of our smiles.

Teeth Whitening If someone is happy with the overall appearance of their smile

but doesn’t like the color of their teeth, the easiest and least invasive treatment available is to whiten their teeth. This typically consists of taking impressions of the upper and lower arches and making custom trays. These trays hold a whitening material against the teeth that over time changes the shade of our enamel. This is a wonderful option because it doesn’t require a lot of time at the dentist’s office and it’s an easy process done in the privacy of one’s home. The main drawback associated with teeth whitening is that patients can experience

HAPPY WITH YOUR SMILE BUT NOT THE COLOR OF YOUR TEETH

an increased amount of sensitivity, especially to cold temperatures. This sensitivity usually resolves itself once the whitening treatment is completed.

Orthodontics People who are unhappy with the positioning or arrangement of their teeth (gaps, crooked teeth, bite problems, etc.) may benefit from orthodontic treatment. Otherwise known as “braces,” orthodontics uses metal brackets and wires or clear aligners to physically move teeth around. This form of treatment usually doesn’t require any removal of tooth structure, making it an incredibly conservative treatment option. However, the trade-off is the length of treatment time, which can vary on a case-to-case basis. The usual time frame is between one and three years. It also requires frequent appointments with the orthodontist to make adjustments to wires or aligners. Still, this is a great option to improve the esthetics of your smile.

Direct Composite Bonding Small changes in the shape, size, or length of teeth can be achieved by adding tooth-colored composite filling material directly to teeth. The procedure involved often requires removing a small amount of tooth structure, preparing the tooth with an etching material, applying a bonding agent, and then adding the tooth-colored material. This is still a fairly conservative treatment option because very little tooth structure is removed and the material used is durable and easily applied and shaped. Adding tooth-colored material to teeth is also a relatively quick process, and is typically done in one appointment. While toothcolored fillings are strong, they are not as strong or as highly esthetic as

SMALL CHANGES CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ADDING TOOTH-COLORED COMPOSITES

something like a porcelain veneer or crown. It can also collect stain where the material and natural tooth structure meet. Still, all things considered, this can be a simple and cost-effective way to make small changes that make a big impact on the shape and overall look of teeth.

Our smile is how we display positive emotions; it’s also a tool we use to project confidence. Everyone’s smile adds character and individuality to their appearance in a way nothing else can.

Veneers When making bigger changes to the shape and size of teeth, veneers are often a good choice. Less conservative than bonding composite, but not as aggressive as preparing a tooth for a crown, veneers require the removal of some tooth structure. The amount of necessary tooth to be removed depends on the arrangement of the teeth, and often the color of the body

VENEERS ARE MORE COSTLY THAN COMPOSITE BUT ARE HIGHLY ESTHETIC

of the tooth. Usually, a bit of the biting edge of the tooth, as well as the lip/ cheek side of the tooth, is shaved down. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and sent to the lab for the veneer(s) to be made. A temporary veneer is placed while the patient waits for the permanent veneers to be made. Once the lab has finished the veneers, the patient comes back to the clinic and they are permanently bonded to the teeth. While veneers are more costly than composite bonding, they are highly esthetic and, when properly maintained, can last for a very long time.

Crowns Similar to veneers, crowns are best used when a tooth is extremely broken down, the body of the tooth is very discolored, or big changes in size or shape are desired. This is certainly the most aggressive option of all of the treatments that we have outlined. Like veneers, crowns require the removal of tooth structure, albeit to a greater degree. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and sent to the lab. Like veneers, the patient leaves that day with a temporary crown. Once the crown is fabricated by the lab, the patient returns to the office and has the crown cemented permanently into place. Like veneers, crowns are costly, but they are the strongest option available and this investment in your smile is highly esthetic and can last for years. Everyone’s smile is unique and contributes to their individuality. Talk to your dentist for options on how to improve the appearance of your smile so that you have the confidence you deserve!

HOW WE W

When we first met Jorja in the summer of 2015 at one of Care and Share Food Bank’s Summer Mobile Food Pantry distributions, she and her husband had recently opened their hearts to five foster care children. This big act of selflessness came with an even bigger grocery budget. “With doubling the size of our family, our grocery bill suddenly went up to $400 per week,” said Jorja. When she learned of the local Mobile Food Pantry, “it was a total sense of relief. … Everyone is so gracious here. They call me by my name and treat us all so kindly- not just somebody standing in line.”

Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen This Winter Season By: Paige Neifert, MD, FAAD, Dermatologist at DaVita Medical Group, Colorado Springs

D

espite colder temperatures, many of us look forward to the winter season for the many positive things it has to offer, including holiday celebrations with family and friends, new beginnings, and, especially for Coloradans, outdoor activities such as skiing and snowboarding. As a dermatologist, I am constantly reminding my patients about the importance of year-round sunscreen. Although the air is cooler this time of year, the Colorado sun continues to shine, making our skin protection regimes in the winter just as important as they are in the summer. We live at higher altitudes in Colorado, putting us closer to the sun’s harmful rays. So regardless of the season, individuals who spend a great deal of time outside need to be vigilant about sun protection. In fact, studies suggest that even when there are clouds in the sky, you may still receive about 80 percent of the sun’s rays. In addition,

We live at higher altitudes in Colorado, putting us closer to the sun’s harmful rays. So regardless of the season, individuals who spend a great deal of time outside need to be vigilant about sun protection. snow on the ground can reflect the sun, increasing the impact of the sun exposure you are receiving. Most people understand that longterm exposure to the sun’s rays without protection may increase their risk of skin cancer. However, many people falsely believe that if you don’t get sunburnt,

it is safe to spend time in the sun. I tell my patients that there is no such thing as a “healthy” tan. Even if you are wearing sun protection, you should avoid being outside all day in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when the sun is at its highest and strongest point. If you are going to spend time outside, limit your time in the direct sunlight by wearing sun protective clothing, seeking shade, and reapplying sunscreen every 1 to 2 hours. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, experts recommend using a 30+ SPF which means it blocks 97 percent of UVB radiation. You should ensure your sunblock also contains a broadspectrum UVA-blocking ingredient such as Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Avobenzone, Ecamsule, or Oxybenzone. Remember to talk to your dermatologist if you have any questions about your risk of skin cancer and measures you should take to protect your skin.

What’s in a Name ADVANCED DENTAL CARE

By: Dr Joe Rota

M

ost recently I was asked why I named my practice “Rota Advanced Dental Care” and what that really meant in terms of the dentistry that I provide. First of all, if one looks around town there are many offices that have names like Comfort Dental, Modern Dentistry, All Smiles Dental, Perfect Teeth. These are corporate dental chains that are owned by an off-site dentist or investment group. Rarely, do the dentists working there have any controlling ownership. You can tell these groups, because there is no dentist name associated with the title. Most of the dentists hired by these groups are fresh out of school and stay around for a year or two to get some experience and then move on to other, more enriching opportunities. They perform mostly simple dentistry. More difficult procedures like root canals, surgery, implants, and complex crown and bridge are farmed out to a more experienced, traveling dentist who moves around from office to office within the chain, providing more advanced procedures. These dentists are generally not specialists, but have more experience. Dentists who display their name in their signage either as part of the brand or accompanying the brand generally own the practice. I own my practice, hence the “Rota” in my business name. Should I need assitance, then I refer to a specialist who works in coordiantion with my treatments. I bring my forty years of experience and continuing traning to provide all dental services.

Okay, so why Advanced Dental Care Technology has changed the way that we do things, not only in life, but in dentistry as well. Not all dentists or dental offices have the technology to support the modern techniques and materials that have been advanced in recent years, thus limiting their skills and treatment options. Here are some differences that justify our title “advanced dental care”.

3-D Cone Beam CAT Scan Now, more than ever before, implant dentists are able to place implants in the jaw bone to precise pin-point accuracy, and sometimes with only a minor punch incision. This is due to the advent of 3-D Cone Beam CAT scan technology, where the jaw bone can be well-visualized, thus showing the position of the nerves, blood vessels, and the bone topography in three dimensions.

High powered, implant planning software can take the 3-D CAT Scan images and position a template of an exact dental implant in a specific location on the x-ray that precisely places the implant at the optimum position for the forces applied to the implant during chewing. Plastic surgical guides are then fabricated to guide the doctor’s preparation of the implant through a small slit in the patient’s gum. This, not only decreases the possibility of hitting a nerve or blood vessel, but also improves the outcome of the implanted tooth. For denture wearers with minimum boney ridges, it can mean the difference in being able to wear an implant denture successfully or not.

One Visit Crowns, Bridges and Veneers CEREC® is a computer-aided design and ceramic tooth restoration system. This revolutionary technology, (also known as CAD/CAM), allows me to restore damaged teeth in minutes with precision made, natural tooth-colored porcelain dental crowns or other ceramic restorations, while eliminating the inconvenience of impressions, labs, and second visits weeks later. New ceramic materials surpass the strength of gold and are capable of bonding to natural tooth structure; and the results, in skilled hands, can surpass those of traditional lab techniques. Crowns are actually milled in the office and then hand-finished and custom colored to create restorations that can match adjacent teeth or create a full smile that can challenge the brilliance of any natural smile.

Soft Tissue Lasers Soft tissue lasers are a light source that produces a certain wavelength of energy that can cut and coagulate oral tissues with minor bleeding and quick healing. They are used in the treatment of advanced gum disease, reduction of excess gum tissue, contouring gum lines to improve the smile line, noninvasive biopsies, reduction of gum tissue for deep cavities, and treatment of canker sores. The greatest advancement that I offer, is my advanced experience, skill in utilizing the technology and the years of continued education that continue to create the passion for dentistry that I possess. Of course, nothing can replace the old time, personal “care” that we provide.

Myths about Accidental Bowel Leakage (ABL)

By: Lukasz Kowalczyk, MD

MYTH # 1 ABL is uncommon and only affects a small number of people FACT: ABL is defined as the involuntary loss of liquid or solid stool. It affects an estimated 46 million adults in the U.S. This is over 10% of the population. In people over the age of 65, it is even more common, occurring in 1 out of 5 individuals. This is a very common problem but one that is not discussed openly. There are many reasons for this including embarrassment, lack of good treatment options, and a lack of health care provider comfort on how to discuss and manage ABL.

MYTH # 2 ABL occurs as part of aging and is “normal” FACT: ABL does increase with age, but it is NOT normal. Many underlying disease states lead to ABL and should be excluded. The most common diseases include: 62

COLivingWell.com

• Hemorrhoids • Pelvic floor muscle weakness • Obstetrical injury from child birth • Inflammatory bowel disease and other diarrhea causing diseases • Nerve injury related to back injuries and diabetes • Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s • Rectal tumors

MYTH # 3 If none of the above diseases are discovered, then patients must either live with their ABL or undergo major surgery as the only treatment options FACT: Many times none of the above diseases are found. In fact, most ABL’s are related to weak nerve signals which control the muscles of the rectum and allow proper sensation of stool in the rectum. The nerve is called “S3” and is the 3rd nerve of the sacrum. Stimulation of this

There is a simple device called Interstim, which helps to stimulate the S3 nerve. Interstim is the TOP rated treatment for ABL.

nerve can lead to improved or completely resolved ABL. There is a simple device called Interstim, which helps to stimulate the S3 nerve. Interstim is the TOP rated treatment for ABL. As you can see from the picture, Interstim does NOT go anywhere near the spine, as the S3 nerve is a PERIPHERAL nerve, so the procedure is very safe.

NEXT STEPS

MYTH # 4

Speaking up and letting your doctor know that you have this problem and that solutions exist is the first and most important in taking control over ABL. There are physicians that are compassionate and able to help you conquer ABL!

Having the device placed is painful and is a major surgery. FACT: Having the device placed is a simple outpatient procedure. The device is slightly larger than a quarter and sits below the fat pad of either hip. There are no restrictions of activity once the device is implanted.

MYTH # 5 Doctors do not like to be bothered with patient complaints of ABL. FACT: ABL is a difficult in challenging problem to tackle. The good news is that there are physicians who have the necessary experience to deal with this problem and offer the best therapies for it. A board certified Gastroenterologist can provide a complete workup to exclude the conditions listed. Additionally, some GI physicians have chosen to specialize the helping patients suffering from ABL. They have been certified in evaluating patients for devices such as Interstim. They also have access to other specialized diagnostic tools and specialists such as pelvic floor physical therapist who can provide additional complementary therapies.

ABL is condition that has many causes that can be easily treated. The most common is simple nerve aging that disrupts that pathways that help control bowel function. The good news is that there are therapies that can address all of these conditions.

The Romance Versus Reality of Downsizing By: Tim King, Copperleaf Homes

I

ncreasingly the baby boomer generation is experiencing what could only be described as “large house syndrome.” The kids are off to college or have already graduated and begun families of their own and the house that for so long was the center of bustling activity is now largely quiet – and empty.

has already ruminated out loud that, “Honey, perhaps it’s time we downsize.”

Abundant square footage that once offered calm in the midst of the storm now offers little more than a weekly challenge just to keep clean. With congregating to a minimum, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that our voluminous sanctuary has now become exhibit number one for why life-changes might be in the making.

But where do you turn?

If these sentiments are reflective of the way you’re feeling, chances are good that you, or your spouse,

64

COLivingWell.com

When you find yourself pondering whether or not someone has designed a riding vacuum cleaner, you know it’s probably time to move into a smaller home.

I must confess that there’s a certain romantic notion to the idea of downsizing. The older we get the more important economies of scale – both in our pocketbook and living space – become. Smaller utility bills are always welcome, no matter our level of affluence. And the thought of having a more compact space in which to live and share with others seems to be replete with the intimate ideals of home and family.

And so it is that our Goldilocks journey for “just the right size” home begins. So what are the options?

I’m guessing that I’m not the only one captivated by the small home market. Regularly I find myself being drawn to those TV shows offering creative ways to live in a home somewhere between 125 to 300 square feet. Amazing indeed. But while captivating, there’s really nothing about that idea that works for me. I mean, I want to downsize but I also want to stay married – nothing personal, dear. I’ve lived in townhomes before. And while nice, they didn’t give me the surrounding space I needed. I like neighbors; I just don’t want to be attached to them. Still, for some, this is a nice solution. As well, there are many excellent smaller communities offering numerous amenities, but often these are starter communities, or slightly above, and while great for growing families, they don’t always offer the pace and lifestyle sought by those of us more inclined toward less hustle and bustle. I know as a custom builder there isn’t a week that passes when someone doesn’t walk in the model and express a desire to downsize without

compromising interior living space. Often the thought is expressed that “we want to downsize, but we don’t want to have to forfeit high-quality interior finishes and features.” And there’s the rub… while many like the idea of downsizing, the reality of it often is different from the alluring romance of it. There just aren’t many options. For these folks, finding the home that’s the right size and quality may require them building a custom home. Ultimately whether you choose a small house, townhouse, down-sized community or to build custom, best wishes in finding the home that’s perfect for you.
