One memorable flight Greetings Readers! It’s a pleasure to write to you and share a little more about our celebrity cover for this issue and the beautiful warbird in the picture above. Two years ago, I had the opportunity to profile country singer Ricky Skaggs at Gruene Hall in the Texas hill country. Ricky’s publicist also represents country singer Aaron Tippin, who I grew up listening to, and asked if I’d like an introduction. Originally, I was simply planning to interview Aaron by phone, but within the first five minutes of our call, we both hit it off and the call ended with him saying, “Josh, just come out to Nashville and spend a few days at the Tippin Farm . . . we’ll hang out and go flying in one of my planes.” Twist my arm, right? Any chance I get to bring you, our readers, a firsthand experience story is one of my favorite aspects of being a publisher. You can read my interview with this amazing music artist and pilot, starting on page 28. But here’s the really cool part I wanted to share with you. My great-uncle and WWII ace flew the P38 Lighting; and the above airplane, a 1943 T6, would have been the exact style plane my uncle would have trained in. It was surreal to envision my great-uncle flying this plane and to contemplate what must have been going through his mind, knowing he was going off to war to defend our country. Aaron, a true American patriot himself, offered to do a few loops to show what the plane was capable of and what maneuvers my great-uncle would have learned. Plant a Garden for a Lifetime of Enjoyment Gardening – One of America’s Favorite Pastimes By: Rich Schell
T
his is the time of year that my green thumbs starting itching like crazy! Since childhood, I have enjoyed plants and flowers, gardening, and anything to do with growing things.
Soon after the first frost, I mourn the loss of all that I watched grow . . . all that I’ve collected and planted with love, and, usually, have spent way too much money on! I like to purchase 6-packs, quarts, and gallon pots from all of my favorite garden centers - it seems to complete me! But, I’m also, at some level, slightly relieved when I finally have a break from the nearly constant care of my garden which includes worrying about drought, fear of hailstorms, and watering, along with more watering!

Yet, I sign up with zest and total glee once again, in anticipation of saying ‘hello’ to my faithful perennials, as well as the rest of my summer guests, including ones I’ve yet to meet . . . flowers yet to be discovered! This year I’m already scheming and have scheduled to have some beds redone, with some additional work to create welcome changes to what I’ve been nurturing the past 16 years since moving to this home. I’ve gone from lots of flowers to adding more shrubs and bushes. I like these for their ability to remain green all winter or bloom seasonally. I don’t usually place a plant in the garden that remains only green, with the exception of boxwoods or pines. I want them to flower or have amazing fall foliage! Currently, I’m on a quest

for simplicity in my gardens, as my yard is just over a ½ acre, and it has begun to become almost more than I can handle alone. I admit I have a yard crew for the lawn and trimming, but the gardens are all me! From the planting and maintenance to the pruning and weeding, and the ever-present worry of the ravages of nature. “First world problems,” right? I will say that gardening is one of the best exercise options out there! Each year I drop several pounds and use muscles that I forgot I had. Here in Colorado, we have a very short growing season, Weather will be good and we’ll declare, “Spring is here!” But it always seems we can get those late-season frosts that stop your heart at the end of May. So, it’s best to use caution. Don’t place non-hardy plants outside until mid to late May. The general rule to start planting in Colorado is Memorial Day, and the end of the season is anyone’s guess! I’ve had frosts as early as mid-September, but on the other hand, have also made it past Halloween! The latter, of course, is my preferred choice of when to put the flowerbeds away for the winter. This season my goal is to plant even more trees and evergreens that make for a spectacular year-round garden. The winter interest must be as exuberant as the summer! I love to add color to my garden with many varieties of annuals, as well as impatiens, petunias, zinnias, dahlias, and begonias, to name several - you’ll always find these in my beds and pots too! Speaking of pots, I have way too many! But, again, I like to mix it up in my pots with a boxwood or small dwarf Alberta spruce - again, for winter interest. But it also takes up a lot of the pot’s ‘real estate,’ so as not to spend a fortune each year on the remaining space to fill them up! One of the tasks I complete at the start of each growing season is to remove half of the soil from my pots and then, amend the soil in my garden beds. Additional soil is inexpensive enough to give the pots a fresh start and an amazing summer of fabulous growth. As I set about on my quest this year, I’m on the search for interesting succulents, unusual begonias, and cool seeds. It’s fun to plant a pot with seeds. They come up very well and often in varieties you’d never find in a 6-pack - available only as seeds! Especially impressive vines! Do yourselves a favor. Even if you do not have a huge and glorious garden, plant up a few pots with some flowers for your porch, patio, or balcony and plan to enjoy the summer watching them grow! Become a part of one of America’s most favorite pastimes. You won’t regret it!

Colon Cancer Awareness Month Staying active and having good stress-management skills can be important factors in having good colon health.

A
lthough different medical professionals and research organizations have their opinions for when a person should begin scheduling colorectal screenings, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Journal of the American Medical Association recommends screenings for those who have no symptoms and are in good health starting at age 50 and goes until age 75. When to start screening for colorectal cancer and other issues should be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. For example, African-Americans are recommended to begin their screenings at age 45 and those who have a family history of cancer should be screened either at age 40 or ten years before the youngest person in their family was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Depending on multiple factors, there are five different visual approaches a clinician can take for screening colorectal health: Colonoscopy. After complete cleansing of the colon, a video camera that has been inserted allows the clinician to have an overall look of the colon and rectum to screen for abnormalities or any changes since the patient’s last visit. If the patient seems to be in good health according to the clinician, a colonoscopy is recommended every ten years. Virtual Colonoscopy. Instead of a video camera being inserted, a computerized tomography (CT) scan is used to get images from all sections of the abdominal region which gives the provider a different view of checking for abnormalities. Unlike a regular colonoscopy, virtual colonoscopies are recommended every five years. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. A sigmoidoscopy is nearly the same as a colonoscopy, as a video camera is being inserted to view the rectum but only views the lower part of the colon.
A sigmoidoscopy should be repeated every five years. This exam will miss any polyp or cancer in right or transverse portion of the colon. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy with FIT. This is the same as listed above, added with a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) that is used to look for hidden blood in the patient’s stool and may require additional testing. If a patient chooses this approach, it is recommended every ten years. Cologuard. Individuals collect a full stool sample which is submitted in a collection kit to the laboratory for testing. This is a newer multiplex stool DNA test which combines testing for DNA shed by colorectal cancers and for hemoglobin from blood. The optimal interval between screening fecal DNA tests is unknown, though guidelines recommend testing every three years. To find a screening that is right for you and fits best with your health plan, make sure to talk to your provider to go over the pros and cons to match one that is comfortable and convenient to you. Although the direct causes of cancer, in general, is unknown, maintaining good lifestyle choices and making changes that are unhealthy, can help with keeping a healthy colon. When it comes to diet, limiting the consumption of processed meats and foods high in sugar, increasing your intake in fiber, fruits, and vegetables, and drinking fluids can all be dietary aids in strengthening colon health. Staying active and having good stress-management skills can also be important factors in having good colon health which can result in a better and healthier overall wellbeing. Overall, keeping open communication with your clinician to discover a good health plan is a great preventative step to decrease your overall chances of health problems in the future.
Early detection is protection. Colorectal cancer occurs in the colon or rectum. The majority of new cases (about 90%) occur in people over age 50.* The best way to prevent it is through regular screenings. Talk to your doctor to learn more about which test(s) may be right for you.

Divorcing During Your Senior Years There are unique factual circumstances that impact seniors moving through the divorce process.

here are significant differences involved in divorces when folks are younger than when folks are in their senior years. It is critical to understand these differences and how these unique factual circumstances impact seniors moving through the divorce process. Seniors are those individuals over 55 years of age. According to a U.S. News and World Report article published in 2015, and based upon a Bowling Green State University study by sociologists, “The divorce rate for those ages 50 and older doubled between 1990 and 2010.” This is indeed, an astonishing statistic!
What should you know if you are a senior involved in a divorce? Property and Debts Historically, “Seniors” have more properties of value or accounts than younger parties: Colorado law regarding the division of marital property is found in Section 14-10-113, C.R.S., which requires the judge to divide the marital property in a “ just” manner, after the judge takes into consideration all of the law’s relevant factors. Debts, credit card balances, loans, etc. are treated in the same manner as a property division. Circumstances related to marital misconduct are not to be considered. Since seniors are more likely to have been involved in long-term marriages than younger parties, it is indeed extremely rare to see a situation where a court will not divide all property equally, 50/50. Property may consist of 18

actual tangible items and things, such as houses, vehicles, furniture, etc, or intangible things, such as pension, retirement, IRA accounts, checking, savings, or mutual fund accounts. Even business interests or holdings are subject to division. All property acquired by either party during the marriage, regardless of how titled, is marital property. All property must be valued as of the date of the decree, or the date of the hearing. It is important to have statements that are up to date and accurately show the values of all accounts, including retirement plans, IRA’s, etc. To determine the value of homes and cars, the Court will consider the “Fair Market Value,” of all such property, which means that real estate is usually valued based upon an opinion from an expert, such as an appraiser. Not only will it be more likely that seniors have greater assets and property interests, but they will also likely have far greater financial worth than younger parties going through divorces. The assistance of financial experts in cases involving seniors is critical to how all property can be effectively divided. It is important to remember that the Court’s division of marital property is mandatory under Colorado law, while a Court’s award of Spousal Maintenance is within the “sound discretion” of the judge. Spousal Maintenance or Support Seniors who are going through a divorce may need to think about how they both are going to pay their living expenses. When one party pays the other, it is called “support.” Colorado has a “Spousal Maintenance” law which sets forth specific factors that must be established in order for a Court to
consider entering orders that compel one spouse to pay the other spouse “support.” In some states, this is also referred to as “alimony.” Before a court issues an award directing a spouse to pay spousal maintenance to the other spouse, the court must first divide the marital property and debts in a “fair and just” manner. Spousal maintenance requires the court to balance the “needs” of the spouse who is requesting support, against the “ability to pay” of the spouse who is being asked to pay support. Obviously, when both parties are retired and not earning income from employment, there is a good legal argument that the party who is being asked to pay “support” does not have an income stream to pay “support.” The statute includes advisory guidelines as to the amount and duration of “support.” With retired couples over the age of 65, it will be challenging to obtain a court order compelling one party to pay the other any form of monetary “support.” Keep in mind, any analysis of Spousal Maintenance must be done alongside an analysis of how property is to be divided. The case law in this area states, “Property divisions are intended to accomplish a just apportionment of marital property over time, whereas maintenance is intended to be a substitute for marital support that can be used, for example, to ease a spouse’s transition into the workforce and prevent the spouse from becoming dependent on public assistance.” See In Re The Marriage of Wise, 264 B.R. 701 (Bankr. D. Colo. 2001). Impact of Retirement or Pension Funds The same law that defines the disposition of property also defines various retirement or pension accounts. These are “Defined benefit and Defined contribution plans.” There are also public or government retirement plans, such as Military Retirement, PERA, or CCRS plans. Matrimonial attorneys and financial experts have experience in how these accounts are normally divided. All property divisions involving divorces must include an explanation as to how such accounts are to be divided. These retirement accounts, pension funds, IRA’s, etc. are considered “property” that the Court will need to divide. What Happens to the Marital Residence? Many seniors have homes that are paid off and not subject to a mortgage. This is very different from young couples who are more likely to have a mortgage in place. For a senior, this means that the vast majority of the equity in their home will be “cashed out” from a sale or when one party buys out the other party’s equitable interest. Most seniors do not wish to obtain a mortgage solely for the purpose of a buyout, so, it’s more common to see seniors sell their homes when they are divorcing and equally dividing the net proceeds from the sale.
The Need for Financial Planning After years of working and planning for retirement, a divorce for a senior may derail years of financial planning. Experts agree that two retirees can live much more frugally on a fixed income, than those same two people who have to live on their share of their net worth. This is the reason, that prior to divorcing, a financial expert or financial planner should be consulted to discuss the annual costs of living and taxrelated issues, as well as planning a realistic budget.
“It’s not easy dealing with this degree of tension and being able to make wise financial decisions in a divorce. From a purely economic point of view, there is more to consider in a senior divorce than divorcing at an earlier age.” Almost all divorces are extremely stressful and emotional. Seniors may have adult children and grandchildren that they will want to continue being involved with after the divorce is finalized. This is why having an experienced lawyer to properly guide you every step of the way is invaluable. The best possible end result of a senior divorce is being able to “bury the hatchet” and reach an agreement. he old clichĂŠ “a pain in the neckâ€? sounds funny, however, for people suffering neck pain, it is anything but funny.
Neck pain can originate from a number of different sources and sometimes is due to a combination of issues. The cervical discs are the shock absorber pads between the bones in the neck. The discs can bulge when the outer wall is weakened but still intact. The discs can rupture or herniate when the outer wall tears and the jelly center is extruded. As we age the jelly center of the discs (the nucleus) dries out, the discs become thinner and can develop bone spurs, this is called degenerative disc disease. The joints in the neck where movement occurs are called the facet joints. These joints can develop arthritis and can be injured in falls or other trauma. The muscles in the neck have the big job of holding up our head. People can develop muscle tension, knots, spasms, and pain called myofascial pain. Nerves in the neck can become pinched by
bone spurs or disc protrusions, this is called cervical radiculopathy. The spinal cord in the center of the spine can become compressed. Determining the exact cause of neck pain can be difficult, even with MRI scans. When people live with a level of neck pain for years, and then develop numbness in an arm, the first thought is that they have developed a pinched nerve in the neck. This often prompts an MRI scan of the neck that shows bulging discs and bone spurs. The problem is that all of us have these degenerative changes after the age of forty, degenerative changes can be pain-free, and determining if those changes are the cause of the problem is very important. It is also important to consider other contributing factors such as a shoulder joint injury, which can radiate pain to the neck. Ruling out a pinched nerve at the wrist or the elbow contributing to the symptoms is also critical. Electromyography (EMG) testing is imperative for an accurate diagnosis of nerve issues, especially before any invasive treatment options such as a cervical epidural injection or surgery are performed. An accurate diagnosis gives the best option for effective treatment. Treatment for neck pain falls into four main categories.
Therapy and Hands on Work Hands-on work such as physical therapy, adjustments,
and massage. This also includes treatment such as heat, ice, ultrasound, electric stimulation, and traction (decompression). Traction can help reduce pressure on a pinched nerve or an inflamed facet joint. It does not make disc protrusions smaller or rehydrate a degenerative disc.
Injection Options The most basic are trigger point injections done in conjunction with massage to address myofascial pain (painful muscle spasms). A trigger point injection involves injecting a local anesthetic into several locations of painful muscle spasms to temporarily knock out the spasm, followed immediately by massage. This is done once a week for up to six weeks. The goal is to block the pain-causing spasm - causing pain cycle even temporarily, with the hope that the muscles tension will relax. If two sessions fail, these are discontinued. Botox injections can be performed for muscle spasms or headaches, these last 2 to 4 months, and often need to be repeated on an ongoing basis. Cervical epidural injections are steroid (cortisone) injections into the spinal canal under x-ray, to calm
the inflammation from a disc injury or a pinched nerve. These injections have a remote risk of spinal cord injury. There are a number of injection options for facet joint pain. Steroid injections into the joints can be performed under x-ray. The nerves to the facet joints can be burned to block facet joint pain, this is called a rhizotomy. Prior to rhizotomy, test injections called “medial branch blocks� are performed to determine if the pain is originating from the facet joints. Rhizotomy typically lasts for six months, the nerves then regenerate, often requiring this procedure to be repeated.
with chronic neck pain. With neck pain you must avoid sleeping on your stomach. It is very important to protect and care for our neck. Poor desk setups that have the neck always turned to one side need to be corrected. It is not a good idea to fall asleep on the couch with your neck on the side armrest. Staying in one position for an extended period can flair neck pain.
Medications Sadly there is no perfect pill, and all medications have potential side effects. It is best to discuss these options in more detail with your physician.
Surgery Reserved for severe pathologies such as spinal cord or nerve compression. All the treatment options discussed above have their limitations, and there are plenty of people who try everything and have ongoing trouble

“W
hen the engine ceased, it forced so much torque on the propeller that it flew off. At that moment, all my training kicked in and saved our lives.� These words would be the start of what would be one of many epic stories Aaron shared with me this past February when I flew to Nashville to spend three days with him and his family at their home and farm outside of this iconic music town.

The Early Years “There was always an exactness that my dad drilled into me from a young age. Flying is a fickle mistress and the moment you are unprepared she will take your life.” Aaron was only four years old the first time he went flying with his dad, a DC3 captain. “Dad stacked up as many books as he could find and when he put my hands on the controls it was love at first flight. Looking down at the matchbox cars below I was hooked and thought to myself, ‘There is no way anything is cooler than the feeling I have at this moment.’ I knew no matter my course in life, that flying and being a pilot would be at the heart of it.” When Aaron was 10, his dad had a horrific airplane crash that nearly killed him and physically meant he’d be out of aviation for a while. “This was a hard time in my life, my hero ‘Ironman Dad’ wasn’t able to do the only thing I’d ever known him to do. We went back to farming and the whole family, including my sister and I, all pitched in to make ends meet.” After some time, Aaron’s dad got a call to get back into aviation as the Fixed Base Operation Manager. Aaron remembers his dad calling him in one day to ask if he wanted to work at the airport. Aaron was only fourteen at the time. Immediately his Dad started teaching him to fly. “When I got my check, I’d take it back to the airport . . . every penny I made I put back into learning to fly. I hungered for experience behind any aircraft I could get my hands on. “My goal was to solo fly on my sixteenth birthday. After a quick warm-up flight with my dad, he asked if I was really ready. I remember that door shutting and my first thought was, ‘Man I’m glad to get him out of this airplane.’ He was a strict and exacting instructor, which I’m so thankful for now because precision can mean life or death when you’re flying. You put an airplane in the wrong place, it will take your life. Every time I take off or land, I say to myself, ‘This will be the absolute best take-off and landing of my life.’ I’ve passed along that discipline to both my boys, who are also pilots.” By the time Aaron was 18, he was a multi-engine, commercial/instrument-rated pilot. He is also a helicopter pilot, flight instructor, and certified aircraft mechanic. Making a living as a pilot through his early 20s meant hauling checks for banks, corporate aviation, and even flying those large promotional banners. “The energy crunch of the late ‘70s put me out of my dream to fly for an airline company. I hung it up for a while to pursue my other love, music and singing.” “Now that I needed a new source of income, I’d run heavy equipment in the daytime and play music on the weekends and evenings. My first official band, Tip & The Darby Hill Band, sang country music.

I hung up the three-piece suit, grew out my hair and beard, and entered a stage of life that would wind me up in Nashville, Tennessee.”
Spreading his Musical Wings One night as Aaron was watching the You Can Be a Star TV show, he thought to himself, “I can sing as good as that guy.” About that time the host threw out the challenge . . . ‘if you think you have what it takes to be on this show, send a cassette of you singing and promo picture.’ “The only promo picture I had was the one of the entire band, so I circled who I was and enclosed my introduction letter.” Shortly after submitting the tape, Aaron was invited to the Opry House for a tryout. The piano player started playing a song Aaron wrote called “I Taught Her Everything She Knows,” and off he went. The producers liked it and invited Aaron to the show tryouts. It was a short time frame turnaround, just two weeks after auditioning. “We drove back to Nashville from South Carolina for the show. I won round one and thought, ‘Boy this is looking good,’ only to finish second and be knocked out in round two. As I was walking off, certain that my music career was over, Jeannie C. Riley, who is best known for her hit song “Harper Valley PTA” said, ‘Aaron, you may have lost today, but you have a really unique voice and you must come to Nashville.’”
A Kind Word Makes all the Difference “Her encouragement was truly the turning point in my life. That nudge made the final decision for my destiny because without her words it’s almost certain I would have left the music business behind for good that day! I literally went back home, packed my car, and headed back to Nashville.” Aaron had the VHS tape of his spot on You Can Be a Star and began handing it out to everyone he could. To make ends meet, he took a pipe welding job at a huge mill. “My motto was to beat everyone by attrition. I knew I could outwork anyone and make it happen. So, nights I’d work at the mill and days would be spent back in Nashville trying to write songs or get a record deal.” Charlie Monk was a publisher in Nashville and Aaron’ first break came in the form of a job offer to work for him, writing songs. “Soon after I started working for Charlie, he took a big job at Acuff-Rose Music and asked me to join as a staff writer. My jaw hit the floor. This was the same company that published Hank Williams Sr.!” Aaron quit his day job at the mill in Kentucky and made a slim $100 a week in Nashville to write. “I did whatever it took to pay my bills and keep my dream alive. On breaks, I’d work on employee cars, change their oil, brakes, whatever it took so I could do what I loved, and that was writing songs.” At this time, Aaron was 26 and enjoyed his bachelor life, but had real concerns that he might have missed his window to be a recording artist.

The First Spark Jim Vienneau, who produced the songs “Hey, Good Lookin’” by Hank Williams and “It’s Only Make Believe” by Conway Twitty, took a demo song that Aaron wrote to Margie Hunt at Sony Music (formerly CBS records), who instantly commented that she loved the voice on the demo. “I couldn’t afford to have my demos recorded,” says Aaron, “so I sang my own demos. That voice she loved was me! Soon after, I was presented to the head of the record label, but he didn’t like me at all and shut that door fast. However, Jim was persistent and had different plans for me. He started pitching my demos around town to the different labels.” Fast forward to a showcase at Joe’s Village Inn, where Aaron was asked to perform for the entire RCA Records team, including Joe Galante, the Music Industry Executive who developed the careers of Dolly Parton, Clint Black, The Judds, Vince Gill, and Waylon Jennings, among others. “It was the most nervous I’d ever been. After the performance, I put my guitar down and Joe said, ‘If you want a record deal, be in my office Monday morning’.”
Aaron’s First Hit Aaron’s big start in the music biz fell on rocky ground at first. After working with two producers, he couldn’t find his groove or that counterpart to understand his voice and vision. “On my third producer, we finally cut my first album with my hit single “You’ve Got to Stand for Something.” Aaron’s first single quickly rose up the charts and became one of the top five songs in the country, but in the northeast, his popularity hit a wall of resistance. “I was considered ‘too country for country’ in the northeast, but fate and God had a different plan for me. On the other end of the nation, in California, a random call to the local radio station was about to make a huge splash in the course of my destiny.” As this listener was driving and heard his song “You’ve Got to Stand for Something,” she called into the radio station and asked the programmer, “Who’s singing that song?” Long story short, this caller was Bob Hope’s daughter. She heard the song and knew instantly that it would be a great theme song for the troops fighting overseas. She contacted Aaron and asked him to join Bob Hope and Johnny Bench on their USO tour to entertain the troops. “The very next day, I was on an airliner heading to Hollywood. I got off the plane and there was a limo driver with my name on the sign. I’d never been out of the United States, didn’t have a Visa, passport, shots, nothing! With the power of Bob Hope’s status and pull, I had all my documents and
shots, ready to head overseas in a matter of hours. The next morning, I walk up to a C141 with a picture of Bob Hope on the side and the words ‘Merry Christmas Troops’ painted down the entire plane. All the reporters were gathered around Bob Hope and when he saw me, he split the crowd, walked up to me and said, ‘You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.’” As if Aaron’s day couldn’t get any better, when he was boarding the plane, Johnny Bench came up and said, “Hey man I love your song!”
Performing with Bob Hope and Johnny Bench “During the flight over, I witnessed the most amazing talent that only Bob Hope could orchestrate. Just he and one other writer produced the entire show. It was an amazing creative experience watching them work. Also, keep in mind, the ‘pilot’ in me was in awe, as I was invited to sit up front while our plane refueled in flight . . . still one of my coolest experiences ever.” Aaron still jokes that the first Americans to hear him play were in Saudi Arabia, a fact that this true patriot is very proud of! “My Dad taught me to never be ashamed or apologize for the love for my country. My true first audience and fans were the ones serving our country. What an honor this was and a perfect way to start my career as a country singer.”
The Hits Keep Coming It was 1990 that Aaron Tippin debuted his first single, and in the past 25 years, he’s released a total of nine albums and two compilations. His most popular songs “Kiss This,” “There Ain’t Nothing Wrong with the Radio,” “That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You,” “My Blue Angel,” “Working Man’s Ph.D.,” and “Where the Stars and Stripes and Eagles Fly” have all made it to the Billboard charts for country music, including three Number Ones. Aaron told us that one of his greatest moments as a musician was when he was writing for Acuff-Rose and Charlie Pride, one of Aaron’s favorite singers, recorded a song he wrote. Today, his pride stems from working with his wife Thea, who co-wrote several songs with Aaron and now runs their own label Nippit Records. “Our 18-year-old son Tom Tippin is making quite a name for himself in music and we love seeing our passion for music and family legacy in the music business being carried out by Tom,” says Thea.

Aaron’s diet & fitness regimen: I eat mostly a protein diet and make sure I get a lot of fiber. As far as my workouts I have learned to act my age. I don’t lift heavy anymore. I generally do two body parts per day and try to average 12,000 steps per day.

Aaron Tippin Today Next year will mark 30 years in the business. Aaron and his wife are making plans and writing new songs as we speak, for a new album set to debut in 2020. The couple is truly in love and a great compliment to one another. They sing together, write together, workout together, fly together, play together, and run the business together. They met at Reba McEntire’s company Starstruck Entertainment and will be celebrating their 25-year wedding anniversary also in 2020. Aaron’s wife Thea is an amazing singer, songwriter and also a recording artist. If you know Aaron, then you know his music has always been synonymous with his action figurelike, bodybuilder physique. While at the Tippin farm,

I am fortunate that I love fish and vegetables. I also eat quite a bit of chicken as well and I try to keep my carbs low. I do an hour of aerobic exercise a day and then a 30-45 minute lifting routine. I don’t lift heavy and usually do 2 body parts per day.
I worked out each morning at their fully equipped home gym, where Aaron has been adding to their collection of weights and machines for years. “After all this time, I still wake up and look forward to keeping my body fit,” says Aaron. “Thea and I drive and motivate one another to stay fit. Now our son Tom joins in most mornings before driving down to Nashville to write and work on his own music career.”
Flying High with Aaron On the second day at the Tippin Farm, we finished our workout, ate a quick breakfast, and drove about 30 minutes to a local airport where Aaron keeps his collection of planes. The Tippin’s oldest son Ted is a certified aircraft mechanic and pilot, and his

fiancé is a commercial pilot. “We are in love with these old warbirds”, says Aaron. “By next year, our new hanger will be complete and Ted and his new wife will be focused on restoring and working on these beautiful planes. A lot of the old timers who know how to work on these birds are retiring or have passed on . . . it’s exciting to see Ted pick up the love for these planes and focus his business on keeping them in the air.” Speaking of being in the air, I was honored to fly with Aaron in his 1943 T6 Warbird. Years ago, I did a story on my great-uncle and WWII Ace Darrell Welch. Little did I know, until Aaron told me, that this exact style plane would have been the trainer my uncle would have first started in before graduating to the P-38s. I crawled up into the belly of this beast, strapped on my helmet, and sat still while Ted cinched me down in the 5-point harness. Since this style plane has a retractable canopy, Aaron told me to keep the canopy open until after takeoff, making for an extremely visceral experience, hearing the sound of the wind flying past, smelling that great old Pratt & Whitney radial engine, which delivers over 600 horsepower at takeoff, and feeling the rumble of the power all the way through to my core. A true bucket list experience, I’m so grateful to Aaron for taking me flying, a memory I’ll cherish and never forget.

Ending with Tennessee Wine My last day in Tennessee wrapped up with a visit to Stonehaus Winery, where Aaron and his wife Thea partnered with vice president Rob Ramsey and wine maker Jan Nix to make the “Kiss This” Sweet Cherry Wine. I’d never had this Tennessee landmark sweet fruit wine, but I’m hooked. It was delicious and their fans like it too – “Kiss This” Sweet Cherry Wine continues to be one of their most popular wines. Their upcoming batch was in stabilization state and Aaron, like an expectant father, was quick to climb up a ladder and use a wine thief to pull samples for color, sugar level, and taste. “We’ve always been fascinated with the winemaking process,” says Aaron. “When Thea and I approached Stonehaus Winery to do a “Kiss This” sweet cherry wine, we let them know right up front that we’d be rolling up our sleeves to learn every step of the process and be heavily involved in the entire process. The winery is now one of our favorite pastimes. We help with the label design, bottling, packing, and promoting the product and even do lawn concerts for their guests when a new batch is released. They have a fantastic wine club and ship all over the US.” While I can’t tell our readers what the next flavor is, I did taste a sample while at Stonehaus and trust me - it’s going to fly off the shelves when it’s released!

Now back to that propeller Aaron lost. That was one of two emergency landings he’s had to perform in his life. Twice, Aaron has been struck by lightning (literally) and twice he’s had to perform an emergency landing. “I’ve had many times where God could have punched my ticket and said, ‘that’s enough here on this earth.’ It reminds me to live each day with purpose, to love all of those around me, to adore my fans, pursue my passions, and keep pushing myself to be better and better each day.”

The house will have a three-car garage,
4 bedrooms, and 3-1/2 baths, with upper and lower levels carefully nestled into the sloping site. Though it has a large expanse of glass to create a visual relationship between indoor and outdoor, much of the glass area is shaded by the canopy and other building masses as an energy conservation measure. A fully-glazed and dramatically cantilevered main-level kitchen, dining, and living room spaces afford expansive views of Downtown, contrasted by the more private and subtle view of Cheyenne Mountain from the master bedroom suite and the guest room/office. The lower level contains two bedrooms and a shared jack-and-jill bath coupled with a family and entertainment room that opens onto a private patio area. The house’s namesake, the prominent canopy that spans the main house, is not only designed to shade the glass but also cleverly hides a photovoltaic system (solar panels) that works to reduce its energy footprint and lower monthly utility bills. The building is also partially covered with phenolic panels, themselves a high-tech ‘rain-screen’ that not only provides a maintenance-free and fire-resistant barrier but also acts as a heat-sink in dissipating heat gain. The building uses innovations that have become keynotes of a ‘markharris ARCHITECTS’ design, specifically those of ‘Component Design Strategies’ which borrows proven processes from industrial and automotive industries to provide a highlyperformative, highly-sustainable, and highlyengaging work of architecture. Many parts of the house, such as the dramatic steel and glass bridge that composes the main house, are produced under the precise conditions of a steel shop rather than loosely constructed on site. “Our cars, our computers, and even our toasters are made with more technological advancements than our buildings. We unfortunately still construct our homes and buildings in 2019 the same way we did in 1919, and yet we wonder why our buildings are not performing better and keeping up with the wide bandwidth of changes we find everywhere else in our lives. The current models for residential housing are bloated, out-moded, out-dated, and out-paced; it’s time for a new Renaissance in residential design. We are simply bringing architecture and construction into the 21st century. It’s time, and I feel Colorado Springs should start being seen as a place where responsible innovation and progress can happen.”

The Best Contact Lens A new, “one of a kind” contact lens, that tints when exposed to outdoor light, will become available in April 2019.

There is about to be a “new kid on the block.” A contact lens that is one of a kind, a lens that tints when exposed to outdoor light.
T
he best contact lens, is there even a best? Many claim to have developed or to sell the best contact lens. What defines or who defines what “the best” is? Social media is becoming the go-to place for many when it comes to knowledge. For information, information of any kind, it seems everyone is an expert these days. No category is off limits, and no opinion is off limits, especially when it comes to contact lenses. There are four main contact lens companies out there - Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, Cooper Vision, and Johnson & Johnson. All of which claim they have the best contact lenses and all use social media to influence the consumer. I can honestly tell you one thing, none of them have the golden ticket, there is not one lens that is “the best.” However, there is one lens that is the best fit for you. The hard part is finding what the right one is. If you combine all the current contact lenses available from the four companies listed above, you will have roughly about 60 soft contact lenses to choose from. Patients should be patients and not consumers.

Don’t play the guessing game. Rely on your eye care provider for guidance in determining what contact lens is best for you. The first step in choosing what contact lens is right for you is knowing what your available options are. Contact lenses are available in three options - hard contact lenses, soft contact lenses, or a hard and soft combination. Most people wear soft contact lenses so we will focus on those. Soft contact lenses come in five replacement frequencies: 12-month, 3-month, 1-month, 2-week or 1 day. 12-month and 3-month replacement frequencies are almost unheard of these days so most people choose one of the other modalities. Daily replacement contact lenses win the “best of” category for being the most hygienic. It is generally the more expensive option when looking at price per lens. However, you do not need to purchase a multi-purpose solution (MPS) to clean the lenses every day as you will wear them and then throw them away at the end of
each day. If you factor MPS cost into the final price point, it is often the same price if not better to buy a daily replacement contact lens rather than a bimonthly (2-week) replacement option and also more convenient and less of a hassle. Bi-monthly (2-week) replacement contact lenses are not as good as daily contact lenses in regard to hygiene but they are a healthier option than monthly replacement contact lenses if replaced at the intended frequency. 2-week contact lenses win the “best of” category of the reusable lens type ONLY if worn as prescribed. Many do not, so monthly contact lenses are the winner of the reusable contact lenses. Monthly replacement contact lenses are by far the cheapest price point for patients so it wins “best of” in price. It may be the least hygienic option but the most durable since it has to last one month. Patients are highly encouraged to purchase a hydrogen peroxide cleaning system for cleaning their contact lenses. This system can be used in conjunction with MPS, used nightly, or at a minimum once a week, to help offset the buildup that occurs on their contact lenses from repeated use throughout the month. The Insider Avoiding the pitfalls when transferring your business to someone you know & care about

he allure of cashing out of your business while leaving it in the hands of a trusted business partner, employee, or family member seems like the perfect scenario. Accomplishing such a goal is aspirational and can often be the key to the continuation of your business in your local community for decades to come. As advisors to families who own a business, we see this desire quite often, but unseen perils lurk in the shadows. This article can serve as a guiding light to help you down the potential paths to internal transfer success.
There are many advantages to transferring your business to an “insider” if there is sufficient time, talent, and desire to develop a plan: Retains the legacy you set out to create Control of the transfer timeline Retain operational control & decision-making Ability to sprint, or saunter, off in to the sunset Continue to share in ongoing equity growth Motivate and reward key employees Ultimate flexibility to achieve your goals as owner

Sounds great! However, the question remains what could derail the plan while there are good intentions and tangible benefits to transfer the business internally?
#1: Insiders have no money
While this is almost always the reality, owners must design a transfer strategy that puts money in the insiders’ pockets as they increase the value of the company. Owners must work steadily and effectively to build corporate cash flow (the source of all cash outs) through (a) the installation of Value Drivers and (b) careful planning to minimize taxation years in advance of the transfer. Just like a sale to a third-party buyer, there must be adequate cash flow for this to be a viable buyout option.
#2: Tax surprises
It’s all too common for owners to discuss gross proceeds of a business sale: “I heard Johnny sold his engineering firm for $7 million and Jim sold his construction company for $12 million.” While gross numbers are great for bragging rights, they never tell the whole story. The value of having an accurate forecast of payout timing and proceeds after legal & valuation fees, as well as payoff of all outstanding corporate debt, is crucial. Is there going to be a sale of assets or stock? Is there a reason to convert from a C Corporation to an S Corporation, or even from S to C? Without careful planning, cash flow can be taxed twice and total more than 50% of the payout. The discussion and analysis of all potential exit routes with legal, financial, and tax experts is paramount for confidence in the process. Proper consideration of all potential transfer options can help lead to a smooth execution, reduced impact of taxation, and the lowest reasonable chance for regret by either party, therefore avoiding a potential busted deal.
#3: Successor’s ownership skills are untested If the buyer’s skills as an owner are unknown, the seller should create a written plan to systematically transition management and ownershiptype responsibilities to their successor, beginning as soon as possible. The transition period, during which owners test both their assumptions and their successor’s ability to get the job done, usually takes several years to complete and provide adequate confidence to both parties.
#4: Loss of control before being cashed out
This could happen if owners and their advisors fail to implement a transfer strategy designed to keep the owner in control until he or she receives the full sale price for the business. In a properly crafted plan, owners keep control through a well-designed and incremental sale of the company based on improving company cash flow over time. A potential transfer catastrophe is only that: potential. Understanding these issues will allow for an Exit Plan that is capable of evading these pitfalls and stress-testing your plan over time will give it the best possible chance of success. The transfer of your business is likely the single most important financial transaction of your life. Put forth the effort to chart your course now. You won’t regret it.

LW: Why is Encompass Health Colorado Springs Different? STEVE: Encompass Health Colorado Springs is the only free-standing hospital in the community. Our technology enables us to provide a very high level of care for stroke, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and other major illnesses and injuries. We are fortunate to having cutting-edge technology at our hospital. One specific piece of technology we use daily is a harness system treadmill and robotic legs that attach to the patient’s knees and ankles. This allows patients to be retrained on a proper gait pattern, enabling them to be able to walk again. With this treadmill system, patients can be mobile for 45-60 minutes, which allows for much safer and effective therapy. This type of technology is why our average patient’s stay is only 12 days. Everyone wants to get home and return to their social activities and families as quickly as possible. We understand that and strive to be champions for their healthy return home. Another piece of technology we have in-house is a device to help stroke patients. The device is placed around the patient’s calf with a sensor in the heel of the shoe. Every time a patient picks up his or her leg, an electric impulse fires to tell the patient when to pick up their foot. While creating a natural walking pattern, it also improves the patient’s confidence.
LW: What have you done to improve and support employee satisfaction and how has this impacted patient care? 46

STEVE: A big difference that separates us from our competitors is our staff and physicians. About five years ago, we decided to change the way we hire our staff and the contracting process for physicians. We try to find the highest-quality applicants. In the past, we’ve focused on clinical experience. But now we also try to focus on compassion and humanity as well. We can train clinical skills, we can’t train empathy, dignity, respect, and great care. This has resulted in a huge growth in patient satisfaction and low employee turnover. Another thing we carefully consider is the kind of person we want to attract to work with us. One of my philosophies is that in order to provide health to others, you must be healthy yourself. We turned one of our open spaces on campus into an employee gym. When you can take your break to exercise and take care of yourself, you are naturally going to take better care of the patient. for Rejuvenation of the Eyes

ne of the more common surgeries that I get asked about is blepharoplasty (aka “eyelid lift”). “Droopy” eyelids are the most common reason people consider eyelid surgery in order to restore a refreshed, well rested, and rejuvenated appearance to their eyes. Patients often tell me that they are “tired of looking tired.” An upper eyelid blepharoplasty (blef-a-row-plasty) removes the extra/excess droopy skin. Lower lid blepharoplasty removes the saggy skin and eyelid bags (fat bulges) that occur with aging to give the patient a more alert, healthy, and youthful appearance.
Tell Me About the Surgery In most cases, the surgery can be done in about 30 minutes as an outpatient procedure. Many patients find the surgery to be similar to a dental procedure (you don’t have to change clothes, you don’t remember the procedure, and you go home right afterwards). The anesthesia can be as light or as deep as the patient wishes. That is, like a dental procedure, a blepharoplasty can be done with the patient either awake or asleep. Patches or bandages over the eye are NOT used. The day after the surgery, most patients carry on with their normal routine – that is, they can drive a car, do their house chores, watch TV, work on the computer, and go for a walk. Most patients develop some degree of bruising but this usually goes away in 10-14 days. Patients who work can usually return to their job in a few days. Most people need only non-prescription pain relievers. 48

s a dermatologist, I am constantly asked how to maintain a youthful appearance. And while I have many suggestions, the poem at the end of this article is really the secret to all of it. So, here are some tips that should help you achieve that enigmatic youthful appearance we all want. “Be The Change You Wish To See In The World.” Gandhi’s words of wisdom are timeless and I think show the most important ingredient in the fountain of youth. When we are striving to make the world around us a better place we are thinking, walking, and talking with purpose. We are invigorated, and what is youth if not invigorated. As humans, we need to be growing and striving toward a goal because if we are not growing, we are withering. Eat well. Our Standard American Diet, SAD, is atrocious and truly is sad. The worse we eat, the worse absolutely every organ system in your body will perform, including your skin. Your body is a temple. Feed the temple a diet of good, non-processed, mostly plant-based nutrition. We can all remember our grandparents telling us to eat our vegetables, don’t drink soda, stay away from too much sugar. We all know how to eat – we just need to do it. Your body will thank you and your skin will show it. 52

Exercise every single day for at least 30 minutes. Studies have shown so many health benefits to exercise that it is beyond doubt that exercise impacts absolutely every area of your life. Studies have also shown that 30 minutes of daily exercise builds collagen in your skin which equals a more youthful appearance. Talk to your primary care physician to find out what exercise is right for you and then love yourself enough to incorporate it into your daily routine. Your skin will thank you. Limit sun exposure and never use tanning beds. Did you know that tanning beds cause more skin cancers every year than cigarettes cause lung cancer? It is estimated that about 90% of the signs of skin aging are due to exposure to the UV radiation from the sun. If you are going to be out in the sun any longer than five minutes a day, and this includes time driving in your car, then use a sunscreen, reapply every two hours, and seek shade when possible. It will pay enormous dividends! Don’t smoke. Smoking causes a lot of the same damage to the skin that the sun does. As well as destroying absolutely every part of your mind, body, and spirit, it is making you look a lot older than you are.

Use good products on your body. A lot of stuff out there has really, really bad ingredients. Do a little research on the internet and you can pick products that do not have horrible ingredients in them. The Environmental Working Group has an amazing and free website where you can look up the ingredients in your products and make sure that they are not causing more harm than doing good. Just go to www.ewg.org and you will be amazed at what you are putting on your skin every day. Finding good products does not have to be expensive and does not have to be difficult. Last, please remember that the attitude with which we approach life is often the thing that makes us either appear youthful or old. If we walk around with no energy, poor posture, complaining about absolutely everything, how will we look? If we walk around full of gratitude, joy, and wonder, with good posture and a smile for everyone we meet, how will we look? We all know people who exude youth well into their 90s. And we all know people who look old as dirt and they are in their 20s. Youth has little to do with your actual age. It has a lot to do with how you carry yourself. Try it for a day, make yourself be full of love and gratitude, and see how you feel at the end of the day – I bet you will feel great, young, vibrant, and ready to accomplish what you were put on this earth to do.

Good News about Hepatitis C in 2019! It is estimated that more than 50% of patients with hepatitis C do not know they have it.
H
epatitis C is a viral infection that typically leads to chronic infection in the liver. More than 185 million people worldwide are estimated to have the hepatitis C virus antibody, suggesting current infection. Central and East Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East have a high prevalence of hepatitis C with greater than 3.5% of its population affected, whereas Asia-Pacific, Tropical Latin America, and North America have a lower prevalence with less than 1.5% of the population affected. What does this mean for the United States? Despite a lower prevalence, current studies suggest that at least 3.5 million people in the United States may be affected by this virus, although due to underdiagnosis, this number is likely an underestimate. Approximately 80% of patients with chronic hepatitis C were born between 1945 and 1965, also known as the “baby boomer� population. In other words, people born

during this time have a six times higher likelihood of having hepatitis C than all other adults in the United States. Additional risk factors for transmission include intravenous drug use, blood transfusion, incarceration, and sexual contact with a high-risk individual. Blood transfusion had been a major risk factor for acute hepatitis C in the past with more than 10% of transfusion recipients acquiring a blood-borne infection. However, donor screening that was implemented in 1990 has nearly eliminated the risk of post-transfusion acute hepatitis C with an estimated risk of less than one in a million per unit transfused.

Most people with chronic hepatitis C do not have any symptoms, so the majority of patients with an infection are unaware of having hepatitis C. The most severe complication of hepatitis C is the development of cirrhosis and decompensated liver disease that occurs in about 20% of patients over a 20 to 30 year time period. Hepatitis C is still one of the most common causes of cirrhosis leading to liver transplant in the United States. Hepatitis C is a chronic infection that can lead to significant liver disease, therefore, it is recommended that all persons with risk factors for hepatitis C should undergo screening. This includes one time testing for all “baby boomers” which is defined as people born between 1945 and 1965, regardless of risk factors. In addition, hepatitis C testing is recommended for anyone with evidence of liver disease, such as elevated liver tests. Testing for hepatitis C requires a specific lab test to check for the hepatitis C antibody. If the hepatitis C antibody test is negative, no further testing is recommended. If it is positive, however, further testing with an RNA test is recommended to confirm chronic infection. Approximately 15% of people exposed to hepatitis C will spontaneously clear the infection, so despite a positive antibody test, their RNA test will be negative. The number of new cases of hepatitis C in the United States had been decreasing since the 1980s with the advent of screening of donated blood. However, hepatitis C infection rates have increased substantially among young adults over the last decade. There were an estimated 33,900 new infections diagnosed in 2015, nearly three times higher than new cases diagnosed in 2010. This increase most likely reflects the epidemic of opioid and injection drug use that is on the rise in the United States. In order to prevent transmission of hepatitis C in persons who share a household with a patient with hepatitis C, it is recommended to avoid sharing razors and toothbrushes or other items or activities that would allow blood to blood exposure. Close contact such as hugging does not increase the risk of transmission. Transmission does not occur with kissing, sneezing, coughing, or casual contact. Typical household activities such as sharing food, water, eating utensils, or drinking glasses also do not cause transmission of hepatitis C. Treatment of hepatitis C has dramatically changed over the last 3 years with the approval of directacting antiviral (DAA) agents. The first of these agents was approved in 2013, although it was not until 2014 when the DAA’s were all oral medications and did not require concomitant
use of interferon, an injection medication with many side effects. There have been a total of 9 agents approved by the FDA that have all shown greatly improved efficacy to eradicate hepatitis C compared to the previously used interferon and ribavirin regimen. Most patients will undergo 8 to 12 weeks of treatment with a high chance of achieving a sustained virologic response, or SVR. SVR is defined as an undetectable virus level 12 weeks after treatment is completed and is considered a virologic cure from hepatitis C. Achieving an SVR has been shown to be durable which means patients stay virus negative years after completing therapy. However, patients can get reinfected with hepatitis C again, as having the hepatitis C antibody does not prevent a new infection if re-exposure to the virus occurs. Patients who have underlying cirrhosis also have a high chance of clearing hepatitis C with the DAA’s, although their treatment duration will be a little bit longer. However, these patients will require continued screening for liver cancer as the underlying cirrhosis is unlikely to be cured. Any patient with cirrhosis, regardless of underlying cause, has a 5% yearly risk of developing liver cancer so imaging every 6 months is recommended. With increased awareness of risk factors for hepatitis C, more patients can be diagnosed and treated. The newer treatments are extremely effective with minimal side effects, so a future without hepatitis C is on the horizon. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Mary Ann Y. I
n January of 1999, I moved to Colorado from the Midwest. Not knowing anyone in the Rocky Mountain state, to fill my time and meet people, I jumped into the many outdoor sports this vast place has to offer. Learning to mountain bike, snowboard, hike 14ers, and snowshoe, I even competed in adventure races for a couple of years. I fell in love with Colorado but found my “love life” less than adventurous. Struggling through the rigors of online dating, I found the experience frustrating and expensive. In talking with friends of mine, I found their experiences very similar to mine. fter two decades officiating local high school basketball games, it seemed like nothing could slow down Darrell Fields and Amy Frenz. But when the pain in their knees became unbearable, the referees feared they may finally have to hang up their whistles. Several doctors confirmed that the debilitating knee pain they experienced would make it nearly impossible to continue running and pivoting on the court. Luckily, surgeons at Centura Orthopedics in Colorado Springs offered a solution that promised to restore their once healthy joints. Dr. Ronald Royce and his colleagues at Centura Orthopedics, which is housed under Penrose-St. Francis Health Services, are among the first in the Pikes Peak region to use Conformis 3D-printed replacement joints. This is a unique and cutting-edge solution where 3D-printing can be used to design a custom knee replacement. Both Frenz and Fields have officiated high school games for the Colorado Springs Officials Association for more than 20 years, but when pain knee grew worse over the years, they knew they would need long-term solutions to continue their careers. Fields, who officiates more than 50 games per season, reached his breaking point when pain medications and cortisone shots no longer eased his severe knee pain. He reached out to Frenz, who had undergone a specialized knee replacement with Dr. Royce two years prior, using a custom-made implant designed from a 3D-printed mold. “Each patient’s specific and unique knee shape and dimensions are used for the Conformis implant. It’s not so much the size of the knee, but the shape, that’s important in making these replacements so effective,” said Dr. Royce. “Conformis implants are designed to mimic the distinct shape and curves of each patient’s knee, creating an increased potential for a more natural-feeling knee.” First, advanced imaging technology is used to create a 3D ‘map’ of the patient’s diseased or damaged knee. Those maps are then sent to a 3D printer and exact wax replicas of their knees are printed. Metal components of each knee replacement are then formed around the replicas— ensuring the proper fit for each patient’s unique anatomy. Clinical studies show this technology can lead to better outcomes compared to ‘off-the-shelf’ knee replacements, which only come in a limited range of standard sizes and must be adapted to fit in the operating room. “It’s like getting custom-made shoes, fitted exactly for you. Patients no longer have to settle for implants that only come close to matching their bodies,” explained Royce, who trained with the surgeons who designed Conformis joints at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “These custommade implants, which fit the unique size of each patient’s femur and tibia, allow for less bone and healthy tissue removal. Better fit leads to less pain.”
According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 600,000 knee replacements are performed each year in the United States. In terms of longevity, 90 percent of the implants last 10 years and 80 percent remain in good condition after 20 years. Frenz first injured her knee playing rugby as a teenager and consequently endured three knee surgeries to repair torn ligaments and meniscus throughout her life. Two years ago, the former University of Northern Colorado basketball player was finally told she would need a new knee to be able to keep officiating basketball games. Now at 60, Frenz raves about her personalized 3D-printed knee replacement and officiates about 30 games per year.

Frenz and Fields both praise their custom-made implants and agree that not only was there minimal pain, but the recovery time was much shorter for their knee replacements than previous surgeries to their respective ACL tears. “The impact that has on your quality of life is really huge,” Fields said. “When you’re in pain for a long time, everything is more difficult, you’re able to do less and be less active. In short, PersonCentered Care means that you and your family are at the center of the decisions that affect your care. Having a Person-Centered Care approach means your healthcare team is taking the time to focus on you as a unique individual with a personal story. It is an effort by your care team to listen and understand what is important to you.

While these features are nice to have, they should not be a high priority. pproximately 136 million people visit emergency departments every year in the United States – more than 50,000 are expected to walk through the doors of the Emergency Department at St. Francis Medical Center in northern Colorado Springs this year. The state-of-the-art ER, which opened its doors to patients Feb. 13, is the culmination of a $102 million expansion project and a pillar of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services’ strategic plan. Powered by faith, caregivers are on a mission to support and propel forward a flourishing community by growing right along with it and planning for its future. The new ER is twice as big as the former unit to meet patients’ healthcare needs today and for decades to come. “Our city is growing with no signs of slowing down and St. Francis Medical Center, in northeast Colorado Springs, is located in the area with the highest growth projection. We are perfectly situated to rise to the challenges and meet the health care needs of our thriving community,” said Dr. Brian Erling, president, and CEO of Penrose-St. Francis. The new ER has 52 beds – more than double the size of the previous unit, creating room to handle increasing patient volumes as the population continues to grow in the northeast part of Colorado Springs. Of those 52 beds, there are four in-take, six super-track, four behavioral health, 32 acute care exam rooms, and six observation rooms. The ER is pediatric-friendly, with more than 12,000 children treated annually.
“The new design of the ER improves the overall flow and patient experience – expediting and improving care for all patients, regardless of their symptoms or illnesses,” Michele Hobbs, Director of Emergency Services, said. “This ER was designed from the ground up to minimize patient wait times and maximize the capabilities and expertise of our physicians and nurses.” This ER is the final phase of a 168,000-square-foot expansion project in St. Francis Medical Center that began in May 2017. St. Francis Medical Center is a Level III Trauma Center and serves as the base for Flight for Life Air Ambulance.. St. Francis Medical Center is perfectly equipped to be the best choice in health care, now and for generations to come. With the goal to eliminate waiting from the moment a patient arrives, the new Emergency Department is designed to improve overall flow, and ultimately, elevate the patient experience.
